An Oxido-Bridged Diiron(II) Complex as Functional Model of Catechol Dioxygenase

Removal pathway quantification and co-metabolic mechanism evaluation of alkylphenols from synthetic wastewater by phenolic root exudates in the rhizosphere of Phragmites australis

Phenolic root exudates (PREs) released from wetland plants are potentially effective for accelerating the biodegradation of alkylphenols, yet the inherent behavior is still unclear. In this study, two representative root exudates (REs), namely p-coumaric acid (PREs) and oxalic acid (non-PREs) were exogenously added as specific and non-specific co-metabolic substrates, respectively, to elucidate the quantification of each removal pathway and degradation mechanism of co-metabolism for alkylphenols (i.e. p-tert-butylphenol (PTBP)) from synthetic wastewater. The results showed that soil adsorption (31-37%), microbial degradation (27-37%), and plant uptake (16-41%) are the main removal pathways of PTBP by PREs in the Phragmites australis rhizosphere. Both REs enriched anaerobic functional community (anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria and denitrifying bacteria) and promoted the usage of PTBP as carbon source and/or electron donor. The activity of non-specific enzyme (polyphenol oxidase) was enhanced by RE which owning a significant positive correlation with bacterial abundance, whereas only PREs strengthened the activity of specific enzyme (monophenol oxidase) catalyzing the phenolic ring hydroxylation of PTBP followed by a dehydrogenation route. Moreover, exogenous PREs significantly improved the growth of degrading-related bacteria (Sphingomonas and Gemmatimonas), especially in unplanted soils with high activity of dioxygenase catalyzing the cleavage pathway of PTBP, instead of plant presence.

De novo synthesis of hybrid d-f block metal complex salts for electronic charge transport applications

The advent of d-d type complex salts for designing smart functional materials with versatile utility inspired us to develop a novel type of M(II)-Ce(IV) complex salts [M(II) = Cu and Zn ions]. In this study, we present for the first time a holistic approach to design and prepare metal complex salts of the novel hybrid d-f block type, [Cu(bpy)₂]₂[Ce(NO₃)₆]₂ (1), [Cu(phen)₂(NO₃)]₂[Ce(NO₃)₆](HNO₃) (2), [Zn(bpy)₂(NO₃)][ClO₄] (3), and [Zn(phen)₂(NO₃)]₂ [Ce(NO₃)₆] (4); [bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline]. The intrinsic structural and morphological properties of the compounds have been revealed by employing a suite of analytical and spectroscopic methods. X-ray structural analysis reveals that the copper(II) centres in the cationic complex units of 1 and 2 adopt a highly distorted tetrahedral and a rare bicapped square pyramidal coordination geometry, respectively. The zinc(II) ions in both 3 and 4 adopt the rare bicapped square pyramidal geometry while the cerium(IV) ions in 1, 2 and 4 exist in a dodecahedral geometry. Investigation of supramolecular interactions reveals that intermolecular O⋯H and O⋯π short contacts bind the complex units in 1, while predominant π⋯π interactions, along with O⋯H and O⋯π short contacts, produce the binding force among the complex units in 2. We further employed the complex salts (1-4) to construct Schottky devices to reveal the role of these new complex salts in the charge-transport phenomenon. The carrier mobilities (μ) for salts 1-4 were determined to be 1.76 × 10^-6, 9.02 × 10^-6, 1.86 × 10^-8, and 4.31 × 10^-8 m² V^-1 s^-1, with respective transit times (τ) of 439, 85, 4.17 × 10³, and 1.79 × 10³ ns, which suggest that complex salt 2 is the best candidate with the highest transport properties among all the complex salts. A crystal engineering perspective sheds light on the charge-transport properties of the complex salts, emphasizing the attribution of the best performance of 2 to its predominant π⋯π interactions. The synthesis of this new type of complex salts, their physicochemical properties and their charge-transport applications envisage great promise for the development of novel crystalline materials with smart functionalities.

Structural and electronic forms of doubly oxido/Pz and triply oxido/(Pz)2 bridged mixed valent and isovalent diruthenium complexes (Pz = pyrazolate)

The article reported on the diastereomeric dinuclear mixed-valent complexes [(acac)₂Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-Pz^R)Ru(IV)(acac)₂] (R = H, Me, meso: ΔΛ, 1a-1c; rac: ΔΔ/ΛΛ, 2a-2c) and rac-[(acac)₂Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-Iz)Ru(IV)(acac)₂], (2d) (HPz = pyrazole, HIz = indazole, acac = acetylacetonate). Moreover, the diruthenium(II,II) complexes [(HPz)₃Ru(II)(μ-O)(μ-Pz)₂ Ru(II)(HPz)₃] (3a) and [(HIz)₃Ru(II)(μ-O)(μ-Iz)₂Ru(II)(HIz)₃] (3d) were presented. The analogous form of 3a, i.e., [(HPz)₂(Pz)Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-Pz)₂Ru(III)(Pz)(HPz)₂], was previously reported. Single crystal X-ray structures of 1a-1c/2a-2d and representative 3a showed their molecular forms, including the diastereomeric nature of the former. The Ru-O-Ru angle decreased appreciably on switching from doubly bridged 1 and 2 (128-135°) to triply bridged 3a (114°). Both series of complexes displayed rhombic symmetry in their EPR spectra, with g₁ and g₂ being very similar for 1a-1c with an almost axial look. The mixed-valence complex with a Ru(III)Ru(IV) (S = 1/2) state of 1 and 2 would lead to iso-valence complexes of Ru(III)Ru(III) and Ru(IV)Ru(IV) with an EPR inactive state by one electron redox reaction. On the other hand, metal based {Ru(II)Ru(II)/Ru(II)Ru(III), 3a/3a⁺} and terminal ligand (HPz/HPz^-, 3a/3a^-) based redox processes displayed anisotropic and free radical EPR, respectively. An IVCT (intervalence charge transfer) band was found for the delocalised mixed valent 1 and 2 {Ru(III)Ru(IV)} or 3a⁺ {Ru(II)Ru(III)} in the NIR region. The intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transitions of 1-3 in the visible region varied systematically as a function of the metal oxidation state.
