Solvent Modulated Assembly of Two Ni(II) Complexes: Syntheses, Structures and Magnetic Properties

Two biologically inspired tetranuclear nickel(II) catalysts: effect of the geometry of Ni4 core on electrocatalytic water oxidation

Two biologically inspired tetranuclear nickel complexes [Ni4(L-H)4(CH3COO)3]·Cl (1) and [Ni4(L-H)4(CH3COO)4]·2CH3OH (2) (L = di(pyridin-2-yl)methanediol) have been synthesized and investigated by a combination of X-ray crystallography, PXRD, electrochemistry, in-situ UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry and DLS. Both of the two complexes feature a core composed of four Ni(II) ions with the same peripheral ligation provided by the anionic di(pyridin-2-yl)methanediol and MeCOO- ligands. Whereas, complex 1 possesses one distorted cubane-like [Ni4(µ3-O)4] core, while 2 has one extended butterfly-like [Ni4(µ3-O)2] core. The homogeneous electrocatalytic reactivity of the two water-soluble complexes for water oxidation have been thoroughly studied, which demonstrates that both of them can efficiently electrocatalyze water oxidation with high stability under alkaline conditions, at relatively low over-potentials (η) of 420-790 mV for 1 and 390-780 mV for 2, both in the pH range of 7.67-12.32, with the high TOF of about 139 s-1 (1) and 69 s-1 (2) at pH = 12.32, respectively. By a series of comparative experiments for complexes 1 and 2, we proposed that their crystal geometries play an important role in their electrocatalytic reactivity for water oxidation. We verified that biomimetic cubane geometry could promote OER catalysis with two very similar compounds for the first time. Compared with 2, the biomimetic cubane topology of 1 could promote OER catalysis by facilitating efficient charge delocalization and electron-transfer.

Synthesis, oligomerization and catalytic studies of a redox-active Ni4-cubane: a detailed mechanistic investigation

A robust tetrameric nickel complex [Ni₄((O_al⁻)₂L-Me)₄(s)₄] (3) (s = solvent) with cubane-like Ni₄O₄ core topology was isolated as a light greenish-orange crystalline solid in excellent yield. The mechanism of formation of 3 involving the two chloride-containing precursors [Ni₄((O_al⁻)₂L-Me)₄(s)₄]·2MeOH (1) and [Ni₄((O⁻)₂L-Me)₃((O_al⁻)(OH)L-Me)Cl] (2) was studied by ESI mass spectrometry and confirmed by the solid state isolation and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The challenging ligand fields containing mono/di-anionic O₂N donating atoms and/or chloride ions stabilized the pentacoordinate Ni(ii) ions in 1–2 upon controlling the experimental conditions. Complexes 1–3 have been characterized by NMR, UV-Vis and mass spectrometric analysis. Complex 3 was found to be redox active by cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies. Theoretical calculations were carried out to shed light on the effects of ligand fields on the stability of complexes 1–3. Complex 3 was found to be a potential catalyst for the diastereoselective cyclopropanation of heteroarenes with good to excellent yields. The ESI mass spectrometric analysis revealed the existence of solution dynamics and oligomerization of 3 in solution. Mechanistic investigation of the catalytic cycle revealed that complex 3 and its various oligomers bind to the diazoester employed, followed by dissociative insertion of the respective carbene moieties to the C2–C3 double bond of the involved aromatic heterocycle, leading to the diastereoselective cyclopropanation.

A unique triply bridged dinickel(ii) complex and two doubly bridged dinickel(ii) complexes are reported, and their magnetic properties and comparative biomimetic catalytic performances are studied.

Coordinating Ability of Anions, Solvents, Amino Acids, and Gases towards Alkaline and Alkaline-Earth Elements, Transition Metals, and Lanthanides

After briefly reviewing the applications of the coordination ability indices proposed earlier for anions and solvents toward transition metals and lanthanides, a new analysis of crystal structures is applied now to a much larger number of coordinating species: anions (including those that are present in ionic solvents), solvents, amino acids, gases, and a sample of neutral ligands. The coordinating ability towards s-block elements is now also considered. The effect of several factors on the coordinating ability will be discussed: (a) the charge of an anion, (b) the chelating nature of anions and solvents, (c) the degree of protonation of oxo-anions, carboxylates and amino carboxylates, and (d) the substitution of hydrogen atoms by methyl groups in NH₃ , ethylenediamine, benzene, ethylene, pyridine and aldehydes. Hit parades of solvents and anions most commonly used in the areas of transition metal, s-block and lanthanide chemistry are deduced from the statistics of their presence in crystal structures.

Trinuclear Lanthanide Coordination Clusters: Single-Molecule-Magnet Behavior and Catalytic Activity in the Friedel-Crafts Alkylation Reaction

A new multidentate ligand (H₃ L) was synthesized by the condensation reaction of 4-tert-butyl-2,6-diformylphenol and 2-amino-4-nitrophenol. The reaction of the ligand with hydrated lanthanide nitrate produced two isostructural trinuclear coordination clusters: [DyLn₃ L₃ (DMF)₃ (H₂ O)₂ ] ⋅ 3.8DMFLn=Dy (1) and Nd (2) (DMF=N, N-dimethylformamide). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that there are three lanthanide ions arranged in an almost perfect linear fashion in both complexes. Magnetic studies show single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior in the Dy derivative with τ₀ =1.7×10^-6  s and a thermal energy barrier of 7.0 cm^-1 . Both complexes were used as catalysts towards the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of indole with different aldehydes with yields varying from 59-98 %. Complex 1 showed better catalytic efficiency than complex 2. This is the first report of using trinuclear lanthanide coordination clusters as catalysts for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction.

Mild Nitration of Pyrazolin-5-ones by a Combination of Fe(NO3 )3 and NaNO2 : Discovery of a New Readily Available Class of Fungicides, 4-Nitropyrazolin-5-ones

4-Nitropyrazolin-5-ones have been synthesized by the nitration of pyrazolin-5-ones at room temperature by employing the Fe(NO₃ )₃ /NaNO₂ system. The method demonstrated selectivity towards the 4-position of pyrazolin-5-ones even in the presence of NPh and allyl substituents, which are sensitive to nitration. It was shown that other systems containing Fe^III and nitrites, namely Fe(NO₃ )₃ /tBuONO, Fe(ClO₄ )₃ /NaNO₂ , and Fe(ClO₄ )₃ /tBuONO, were also effective. Presumably, Fe^III oxidizes the nitrite (NaNO₂ or tBuONO) to form the NO₂ free radical, which serves as the nitrating agent for pyrazolin-5-ones. The synthesized 4-nitropyrazolin-5-ones were discovered to be a new class of fungicides. Their in vitro activities against phytopathogenic fungi were found comparable or even superior to those of commercial fungicides (fluconazole, clotrimazole, triadimefon, and kresoxim-methyl). These results represent a promising starting point for the development of a new type of plant protection agents that can be easily synthesized from widely available reagents.

Organotin metalloligands for selective sensing of metal ions

Four new organotin carboxylates, [(t-C₄H₉)₂Sn(L₁)₂] (1), [(t-C₄H₉)₂Sn(L₂)₂] (2), [{(n-C₄H₉)₂Sn(L₁)}₂O]₂ (3) and [{(n-C₄H₉)₂Sn(L₂)}₂O]₂ (4), are reported. All complexes selectively recognize Cu(ii) and Fe(iii) ions in solution. Complex 1 was found to be the best one for sensing those ions among all complexes.
