Abstract
Ca2+ ion as a second messenger in signaling pathway plays many vital roles in many biological phenomena. Thus, it is of significance for developing effective probes to detect Ca2+ ion specifically. Herein, a new Schiff base fluorescent probe FPH, fluorescein monoaldehyde (2-aminomethylpyridine) hydrazone, was designed and synthesized to identify Ca2+ in DMSO aqueous solution. The probe FPH revealed significant responses to Ca2+ with a fluorescence enhancement at 540 nm, exhibiting an evident fluorescence change from ultraweak luminescence to bright green. Otherwise, the FPH displayed a good linear range of 0.67 × 10-6 to 3.33 × 10-6 mol/L with a lower detection limit at 7.02 × 10-8 mol/L. The probe FPH were further successfully utilized to detect Ca2+ in living cells by an increased bright green fluorescence.

Abstract
The CN bond isomerization/modulation as a fluorescence signalling mechanism was explored by studying the photophysical properties of conformationally restricted molecules. From the beginning, the CN bond isomerization method has attracted the attention of researchers owing to its simplicity, high selectivity, and sensitivity in fluorescence evaluation. Continuous developments in the field of sensing using CN bond-containing compounds have been achieved via the customization of the isomerization process around the CN bond in numerous ways, and the results were obtained in the form of specific discrete photophysical changes. CN isomerization causes significant fluorescence enhancement in response to detected metal cations and other reactive species (Cys, Hys, ClO-, etc.) straightforwardly and effectively. This review sheds light on the process of CN bond isomerization/modulation as a signalling mechanism depending on fluorescence changes via conformational restriction. In addition, CN bond isomerization-based fluorescent sensors have yet to be well reviewed, although several fluorescent sensors based on this signalling mechanism have been reported. Therefore, CN-based fluorescent sensors are summarized in this review.

Abstract
Optical chemosensors are a practical tool for the detection and quantification of important analytes in biological and environmental fields, such as Cu2+ and Fe3+. To the best of our knowledge, a BODIPY derivative capable of detecting Cu2+ and Fe3+ simultaneously through a colorimetric response has not yet been described in the literature. In this work, a meso-triphenylamine-BODIPY derivative is reported for the highly selective detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+. In the preliminary chemosensing study, this compound showed a significant color change from yellow to blue-green in the presence of Cu2+ and Fe3+. With only one equivalent of cation, a change in the absorption band of the compound and the appearance of a new band around 700 nm were observed. Furthermore, only 10 equivalents of Cu2+/Fe3+ were needed to reach the absorption plateau in the UV-visible titrations. Compound 1 showed excellent sensitivity toward Cu2+ and Fe3+ detection, with LODs of 0.63 µM and 1.06 µM, respectively. The binding constant calculation indicated a strong complexation between compound 1 and Cu2+/Fe3+ ions. The 1H and 19F NMR titrations showed that an increasing concentration of cations induced a broadening and shifting of the aromatic region peaks, as well as the disappearance of the original fluorine peaks of the BODIPY core, which suggests that the ligand-metal (1:2) interaction may occur through the triphenylamino group and the BODIPY core.

Abstract
It is a challenge to achieve the fully water-soluble chitosan. In this work, water-soluble chitosan-based probes were obtained by the following steps: boron-dipyrrolemethene (BODIPY)-OH was synthesized, and then BODIPY-OH was halogenated to BODIPY-Br. Afterwards, BODIPY-Br reacted with carbon disulfide and mercaptopropionic acid to obtain BODIPY-disulfide. BODIPY-disulfide was introduced to chitosan via amidation reaction to obtain fluorescent chitosan-thioester (CS-CTA); it is employed as the macro-initiator. Methacrylamide (MAm) was grafted onto chitosan fluorescent thioester through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization method. Thus, a water-soluble macromolecular probe (CS-g-PMAm) with chitosan as the main chain and PMAm as long-branched chains was obtained. It greatly improved the solubility in pure water. The thermal stability was reduced slightly, and the stickiness was greatly reduced and the samples displayed the characteristics of liquid. CS-g-PMAm could detect Fe3+ in pure water. By the same method, CS-g-PMAA (CS-g-Polymethylacrylic acid) was synthesized and investigated as well.

Abstract
A simple 1,8-naphthalimide based Schiff base probe (E)-6-((4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)-2-(2-morpholinoethyl)-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (NDSM) has been designed and synthesized for the specific detection of Fe3+ based on a fluorimetric mode. The absorbance of NDSM at 360 nm increased significantly in acetonitrile : water (7 : 3, v/v) medium only in the presence of Fe3+ ions with a visible colour change from yellow to golden yellow. Likewise, fluorescence emission intensity at 531 nm was almost wholly quenched in the presence of Fe3+. However, other competitive ions influenced insignificantly or did not affect the optical properties of NDSM. Lysosome targetability was expected from NDSM due to the installation of a basic morpholine unit. The LOD was found to be 0.8 μM with a response time of seconds. The fluorescence reversibility of NDSM + Fe3+ was established with complexing agent EDTA. Fe3+ influences the optical properties of NDSM by complexing with it, which blocks C[double bond, length as m-dash]N isomerization in addition to the ICT mechanism. The real-time application of Fe3+ was demonstrated in test paper-based detection, by the construction of a molecular logic gate, quantification of Fe3+ in water samples and fluorescence imaging of Fe3+.

Abstract
It is urgent and important to detect heavy metals in environments. In this work, novel reaction-based fluorescent probes were obtained by Schiff base reaction. The probes with Schiff base moiety (-C=N-) undergo irreversible hydrolysis in the presence of Hg2+ and Fe3+. They exhibit perfect high selectivity and sensitivity to Hg2+and Fe3+ ions. Upon the addition of Hg2+and Fe3+, fluorescence intensity of the probes increased notably. And the color of the probe changes from brown to bright green under UV light, which can realize "naked eye" detection. In addition, Schiff base group was introduced into polyurethane chain through condensation polymerization reaction. As expected, the fluorescent polyurethane probe (P2) maintained the detection performance of its original small molecules (BSD). Even more P2 showed a more sensitive detection effect than BSD, and the detection limits of P2 for Hg2+ and Fe3+ reach 0.19 μM and 0.21 μM, respectively. It indicates that Reaction-based probes could be a useful tool for the detection of Hg2+ and Fe3+.
