Substituent-Controlled Selective and Sensitive Potential Optical Fluoride Sensors Based on Salicylidene Schiff Base Derivatives

The sensing mechanism of 3-hydroxyflavone-based (3-HF) fluorescent chemodosimeter 3-triisopropylsilylflavone (3-TPSF) for detecting fluoride (F-) has been theoretically investigated. The calculated Laplacian bond order confirms that the Si-O bond of 3-TPSF is the reaction site of F-. The free energy barrier of 18.33 kcal mol-1 indicates that F-triggered desilylation reaction can occur and then form the anionic state of 3-HF (3-HF-) with a fluorescence peak at 545 nm. 3-HF- captures H+ of the mixed aqueous medium to be transformed into 3-HF with an intramolecular hydrogen bond (O1-H⋯O2). The energy barrier of 1.86 kcal mol-1 in the S1 state obtained from the constructed potential energy curves confirms that the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in 3-HF occurs to form a tautomer structure, which produces a long-wavelength emission of 549 nm. The fluorescence emitted from both 3-HF- and 3-HF agrees with the experimental value of 530 nm appearing after adding F-. Charge transfer analyses indicate that the extent of intramolecular charge transfer in 3-HF- is more intense than that of 3-TPSF, which induces a large Stokes shift of 180 nm. Therefore, the sensing mechanism is attributed to the combination of a large charge transfer feature and ESIPT that are caused by desilylation reaction. The significant fluorescence change makes 3-TPSF a chemodosimeter for detecting F-.

Revisiting salicylidene-based anion receptors

Several salicylidene-based colorimetric and fluorimetric anion sensors are known in the literature. However, our 1H-NMR experimental results (in DMSO-d6) showed hydrolysis of imine (-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-) bonds in salicylidene-based receptors (SL, CL1 and CL2) in the presence of quaternary ammonium salts (n-Bu4N+) of halides (Cl- and Br-) and oxo-anions (H2PO4 -, HSO4 - and CH3COO-). The mono-salicylidene compound CL1 showed the most extensive -N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH- bond hydrolysis in the presence of anions. In contrast, the di-salicylidene compound CL2 and the tris-salicylidene compound SL showed comparatively slow hydrolysis of -N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH- bonds in the presence of anions. Anion-induced imine bond cleavage in salicylidene compounds could easily be detected in 1H-NMR due to the appearance of the salicylaldehyde -CHO peak at 10.3 ppm which eventually became more intense over time, and the -N[double bond, length as m-dash]CH- peak at 8.9-9.0 ppm became considerably weaker. Furthermore, the formation of the salicylidene O-H⋯X- (X- = Cl-/Br-) hydrogen-bonded complex, peak broadening due to proton-exchange processes and keto-enol tautomerism have also been clearly observed in the 1H-NMR experiments. Control 1H-NMR experiments revealed that the presence of moisture in the organic solvents could result in gradual hydrolysis of the salicylidene compounds, and the rate of hydrolysis has further been enhanced significantly in the presence of an anion. Based on 1H-NMR results, we have proposed a general mechanism for the anion-induced hydrolysis of imine bonds in salicylidene-based receptors.

A simple benzimidazole styryl-based colorimetric chemosensor for dual sensing application

A new colorimetric styryl-benzimidazole based receptor to recognize more than one analyte trans-2-[4'-(dimethylamino)styryl]benzimidazole) (L1) has been synthesized and fully characterized by ¹³C and ¹H NMR, elemental analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy, and HRMS. Investigation of sensing ability of receptor L1 was carried out in presence of multiple anions (Br^-, CN^-, Cl^-, ClO₄^-, F^-, HSO₄^-, PF₆^-, NO₃^-, S^2-, OH^-, AcO^- and H₂PO₄^-) and cations (Cu²⁺, Cr³⁺, Al³⁺, Mg²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ni²⁺, Fe³⁺, K⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Ag⁺, Hg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Co²⁺, Pb²⁺, Na⁺, and Zn²⁺) by using UV-vis spectroscopy. Receptor L1 showed colorimetric response towards only for HSO₄^- ion. Receptor L1-HSO₄^- interaction confirmed with the help of ¹H NMR titration. Among various cations, L1 selectively sense the Cu²⁺ and Al³⁺ with the drastic colour change from yellow to green and dark yellow respectively. The stoichiometric binding ratio of L1 with HSO₄^-, Cu²⁺, and Al³⁺ found to be 1:1 by jobs method and HRMS data proved the complex formation between L1 and Cu²⁺/Al³⁺ with very low detection limit. In addition to explore practical applicability of L1, paper strips have been made and used to detect HSO₄^- and Cu²⁺ ions, respectively, up to 10 ppm level.

A pyrene-benzimidazole composed effective fluoride sensor: potential mimicking of a Boolean logic gate
