Incorporation of Functional Groups Expands the Applications of UiO-67 for Adsorption, Catalysis and Thiols Detection

Highly efficient photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide by a stable Zr(IV)-based MOF with a diamino-functionalized ligand

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a promising class of materials for solar-driven hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation due to their porosity, large surface area and designable molecular building blocks; however, producing H2O2 from oxygen and water without sacrificial agents remains a major challenge. Herein, we have constructed two UiO-67-type MOFs, UiO-67-NH2 and UiO-67-(NH2)2, by a solvothermal method using 2-amino-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid and 2,2'-diamino-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid as ligands, respectively. A variety of photochemical measurements have shown that the introduction of diamino groups into UiO-67-(NH2)2 not only enhances its absorption ability for visible light, but also facilitates the separation of photogenerated electron/hole pairs. Consequently, compared to monoamino-functionalized UiO-67-NH2, UiO-67-(NH2)2 exhibits a 5.5 times higher H2O2 production rate in pure water for 1 h. A two-step one-electron oxygen reduction reaction pathway for photocatalytic H2O2 production was suggested based on a series of control experiments and active species trapping tests by electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. This work provides new insights into the regulation of functionalized MOF ligands at the molecular level and a catalytic mechanism towards MOF-based photocatalysts for H2O2 production with high activity.

Optimization of Visible-Light-Driven Ciprofloxacin Degradation Using a Z-Scheme Semiconductor MgFe2O4/UiO-67

A heterogeneous photocatalyst, MgFe2O4/UiO-67 (MU-x), was successfully synthesized by doping magnetic magnesium ferrite nanoparticles (MgFe2O4) with the UiO-67 metal-organic framework at various weight ratios (MgFe2O4: UiO-67 at 30, 50, 70, and 90 wt %). Various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) , Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), photoluminescence (PL), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), were used to characterize the prepared photocatalysts. The photocatalytic performance of MU-x in the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) under visible light was assessed. The CIP degradation efficiency was found to increase as the amount of MgFe2O4 in the composite was increased up to 70 wt %. Experimental conditions were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) with three factors: initial pH, catalyst loading, and CIP concentration. Using the obtained model, the optimal conditions were determined as follows: initial pH of 8.025, catalyst loading of 33.8 wt %, and CIP concentration of 10.8 mg/L. Under these optimal conditions, a notable improvement was achieved, with 99.62% of CIP removal achieved within 90 min, surpassing the performance of previously reported photocatalysts. Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis revealed a high degree of mineralization, at 81.25%. The degradation pathway of CIP was investigated based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. Finally, the values of ECB and EVB of the photocatalyst were determined and the possible degradation mechanism of CIP was investigated based on Mott-Schottky and the applied scavengers. The hydroxyl radical (•OH) was identified as the dominant species in the removal of CIP through a trapping experiment. The photocatalyst with 70 wt % of MgFe2O4 (MU-70) exhibited excellent stability and recoverability with an external magnet, demonstrating 86.33% CIP removal after four cycles. According to the obtained results, MU-70 is a promising visible-light-active photocatalyst with great potential for water treatment applications and convenient recovery.

Design of metal-organic framework composites in anti-cancer therapies

Metal-organic frameworks are a class of new and promising anti-cancer materials. MOFs with adjustable pore size, large specific surface area, diverse structure, and excellent chemical and physical properties make them a class of effective protection carriers for anti-cancer substances. This review is centered on the core point of "anti-cancer" and discusses MOFs' research progress in anti-cancer therapies. Firstly, we provided readers with the different types of MOFs, their preparation strategies and the resulting structures. Then, different MOF composites and their biological applications were systematically presented. The specificity of biomolecules endows MOFs with broader anti-cancer applications, while MOFs can protect the drugs and biomolecules to make the best of a challenging situation. Finally, we elucidated a comprehensive overview of the biological applications of MOFs, including research hotspots as drug delivery and biomolecule carriers. Besides, we looked forward to the future developments of MOFs in the field of anti-cancer therapies. As a class of novel materials, the anti-cancer applications of MOFs are extended through the combination of different materials and different methods to improve their efficacy.

UiO-67 metal-organic gel material deposited on photonic crystal matrix for photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen production

Robust UiO-67 metal-organic framework nanoparticles have been precisely and uniformly anchored on the surface of a photonic crystal via metal-organic gelation, resulting in a nanoscale UiO-67 composite. Mott-Schottky measurements indicate that UiO-67/B is an n-type semiconductor with electron conduction, and the band gap significantly decreases with the assistance of the photonic crystal matrix with a band gap of 0.75 eV. Benefiting from the abundant photoelectrons trapped from the photonic crystal, good hydrogen evolution reaction performance is achieved under light irradiation. The current density increases from 3.2 to 7.0 mA cm^-2 at -0.6 V (vs. RHE) for UiO-67/B. The optimized carrier density obtained from UiO-67/B is apparently increased 2.15 times under light irradiation for 30 min. This work provides a rational strategy to address the photo-capture and energy transfer issues of metal-organic frameworks under visible light irradiation for H₂ production in artificial photosynthesis.
