Schiff-base Polymer Immobilized Ruthenium for Efficient Catalytic Cross-coupling of Secondary Alcohols with 2-amino- and γ-aminobenzyl Alcohols to Give Quinolines and Pyridines

A Schiff-base porous polymer has been impregnated with ruthenium trichloride for acceptor-free dehydrogenation coupling (ADC) of secondary alcohols with γ-amino- and 2-aminobenzyl alcohols to give pyridines and quinolines. This heterogenous catalyst exhibited high catalytic efficiency over repeated cycles with wide functional group tolerance.

Porous organic polymers (POPs) for environmental remediation

Modern global industrialization along with the ever-increasing growth of the population has resulted in continuous enhancement in the discharge and accumulation of various toxic and hazardous chemicals in the environment. These harmful pollutants, including toxic gases, inorganic heavy metal ions, anthropogenic waste, persistent organic pollutants, toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, volatile organic compounds, etc., are destroying the ecological balance of the environment. Therefore, systematic monitoring and effective remediation of these toxic pollutants either by adsorptive removal or by catalytic degradation are of great significance. From this viewpoint, porous organic polymers (POPs), being two- or three-dimensional polymeric materials, constructed from small organic molecules connected with rigid covalent bonds have come forth as a promising platform toward various leading applications, especially for efficient environmental remediation. Their unique chemical and structural features including high stability, tunable pore functionalization, and large surface area have boosted the transformation of POPs into various macro-physical forms such as thick and thin-film membranes, which led to a new direction in advanced level pollutant removal, separation and catalytic degradation. In this review, our focus is to highlight the recent progress and achievements in the strategic design, synthesis, architectural-engineering and applications of POPs and their composite materials toward environmental remediation. Several strategies to improve the adsorption efficiency and catalytic degradation performance along with the in-depth interaction mechanism of POP-based materials have been systematically summarized. In addition, evolution of POPs from regular powder form application to rapid and more efficient size and chemo-selective, "real-time" applicable membrane-based application has been further highlighted. Finally, we put forward our perspective on the challenges and opportunities of these materials toward real-world implementation and future prospects in next generation remediation technology.

Multicomponent Synthesis Strategies, Catalytic Activities, and Potential Therapeutic Applications of Pyranocoumarins: A Comprehensive Review

Fused coumarins, because of their remarkable biological and therapeutic properties, particularly pyranocoumarins, have caught the interest of synthetic organic chemists, leading to the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly protocols for synthesizing pyranocoumarin derivatives. These compounds are the most promising heterocycles discovered in both natural and synthetic sources, with anti-inflammatory, anti-HIV, antitubercular, antihyperglycemic, and antibacterial properties. This review employed the leading scientific databases Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed up to the end of 2022, as well as the combining terms pyranocoumarins, synthesis, isolation, structural elucidation, and biological activity. Among the catalysts employed, acidic magnetic nanocatalysts, transition metal catalysts, and carbon-based catalysts have all demonstrated improved reaction yields and facilitated reactions under milder conditions. Herein, the present review discusses the various multicomponent synthetic strategies for pyranocoumarins catalyzed by transition metal-based catalysts, transition metal-based nanocatalysts, transition metal-free catalysts, carbon-based nanocatalysts, and their potential pharmacological activities.

FeNC Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalyst with High Utilization Penta-Coordinated Sites

Atomic Fe in N-doped carbon (FeNC) electrocatalysts for oxygen (O₂ ) reduction at the cathode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells are the most promising alternative to platinum-group-metal catalysts. Despite recent progress on atomic FeNC O₂  reduction, their controlled synthesis and stability for practical applications remain challenging. A two-step synthesis approach has recently led to significant advances in terms of Fe-loading and mass activity; however, the Fe utilization remains low owing to the difficulty of building scaffolds with sufficient porosity that electrochemically exposes the active sites. Herein, this issue is addressed by coordinating Fe in a highly porous nitrogen-doped carbon support (≈3295 m²  g^-1 ), prepared by pyrolysis of inexpensive 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine and a Mg²⁺ salt active site template and porogen. Upon Fe coordination, a high electrochemical active site density of 2.54 × 10¹⁹  sites g_FeNC ^-1  and a record 52% FeN_x electrochemical utilization based on in situ nitrite stripping are achieved. The Fe single atoms are characterized pre- and post-electrochemical accelerated stress testing by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, showing no Fe clustering. Moreover, ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and low-temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy suggest the presence of penta-coordinated Fe sites, which are further studied by density functional theory calculations.

Evaluation of an Imine-Linked Polymer Organic Framework for Storage and Release of H2S and NO

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and nitric oxide (NO) are especially known as toxic and polluting gases, yet they are also endogenously produced and play key roles in numerous biological processes. These two opposing aspects of the gases highlight the need for new types of materials to be developed in addition to the most common materials such as activated carbons and zeolites. Herein, a new imine-linked polymer organic framework was obtained using the inexpensive and easy-to-access reagents isophthalaldehyde and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine in good yield (64%) through the simple and catalyst-free Schiff-base reaction. The polymeric material has microporosity, an A_BET surface area of 51 m²/g, and temperature stability up to 300 °C. The obtained 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine imine-linked polymer organic material has a higher capacity to adsorb NO (1.6 mmol/g) than H₂S (0.97 mmol/g). Release studies in aqueous solution showed that H₂S has a faster release (3 h) from the material than NO, for which a steady release was observed for at least 5 h. This result is the first evaluation of the possibility of an imine-linked polymer organic framework being used in the therapeutic release of NO or H₂S.
