Mesoporous MCM‐41 Silica Supported Pyridine Nanoparticle: A Highly Efficient, Recyclable Catalyst for Expeditious Synthesis of Quinoline Derivatives through Domino Approach

Paired electrolysis enabled annulation for the quinolyl-modification of bioactive molecules

A paired electrolysis enabled cascade annulation that enables the efficient synthesis of highly functionalized quinoline-substituted bioactive molecules from readily available starting materials is reported. Using this methodology, two goals, namely, the direct synthesis of quinolines and the introduction of quinoline moieties to bioactive molecules, can be simultaneously achieved in one simple operation. The use of electroreduction for the activation of isatin, together with the further anodic oxidation of KI to catalytically result in a cascade annulation, highlight the unique possibilities associated with electrochemical activation methods. This transformation can tolerate a wide range of functional groups and can also be used as a functionalization tactic in pharmaceutical research as well as other areas.

Palladium oxide-decorated mesoporous silica on graphene oxide nanosheets as a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of β-substituted indole derivatives

In this work, an efficient and facile strategy has been adopted for the stepwise synthesis of the RGO-MSiO2/PdO hybrid nanomaterial (HY-NM). Herein, a hybrid nanostructure of mesoporous silica over graphene oxide (GO) sheets has been developed followed by immobilizing palladium oxide nanoparticles (PdO NPs), and then it has been utilized for catalyzing a multicomponent reaction (MCR). To authenticate the successful synthesis of the HY-NM and successive immobilization of PdO NPs, various physicochemical characterization techniques were utilized such as SEM, EDAX, HR-TEM, HR-XRD, TGA, BET, FT-IR, and XPS analysis. The activity of the HY-NM has been determined by performing the catalyst-mediated synthesis of β-substituted indole derivatives (yield 90-98%). The excellent catalytic activity of the prepared HY-NM could be observed due to its high surface area and large porosity, which facilitates the penetration and interaction of reactant molecules with the catalytic active species. This protocol eliminates the requirement of further purification after the isolation of the product from the reaction mixture. The ease of handling, recyclability of the catalyst, and simple work-up procedure are the main features of this protocol. The synthesized HY-NM could be recycled for multiple catalytic cycles making it a very effective heterogeneous catalyst.

This review summarizes recent developments on cyclization reactions induced by the C–N or C–S bond cleavage of isatins or thioisatins in the last 5 years, which produce fused products instead of spiro compounds.

Ketone Hydrogenation by Using ZnO-Cu(OH)Cl/MCM-41 with a Splash of Water: An Environmentally Benign Approach

MCM-41-supported ZnO-Cu(OH)Cl nanoparticles were synthesized via an incipient wetness impregnation technique using zinc chloride and copper chloride salts as well as water at room temperature. The catalyst was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and TGA, whereas surface and morphological studies were performed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The above studies revealed the incorporation of metal species into the pores of MCM-41, leading to a decrease in surface area of the nanoparticles that was found to be 239.079 m² /g. The substituents attached to the ketone determine the rate of the reaction, and the utilization of the green solvent 'water' astonishingly completes the hydrogenation reaction in 45 minutes at 40 °C with 100% conversion and 100% selectivity as analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Hence, ZnO-Cu(OH)Cl/MCM-41 nanoparticles with 2.46 wt% zinc and 6.39 wt% copper were demonstrated as an active catalyst for the reduction of ketones without using any gaseous hydrogen source making it highly efficient as well as environmentally and economically benign.

Functionalized Silicas for Metal-Free and Metal-Based Catalytic Applications: A Review in Perspective of Green Chemistry

Heterogeneous catalysis plays a key role in promoting green chemistry through many routes. The functionalizable reactive silanols highlight silica as a beguiling support for the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts. Metal active sites anchored on functionalized silica (FS) usually demonstrate the better dispersion and stability due to their firm chemical interaction with FSs. Having certain functional groups in structure, FSs can act as the useful catalysts for few organic reactions even without the need of metal active sites which are termed as the covetous reusable organocatalysts. Magnetic FSs have laid the platform where the effortless recovery of catalysts is realized just using an external magnet, resulting in the simplified reaction procedure. Using FSs of multiple functional groups, we can envisage the shortened reaction pathway and, reduced chemical uses and chemical wastes. Unstable bio-molecules like enzymes have been stabilized when they get chemically anchored on FSs. The resultant solid bio-catalysts exhibited very good reusability in many catalytic reactions. Getting provoked from the green chemistry aspects and benefits of FS-based catalysts, we confer the recent literature and progress focusing on the significance of FSs in heterogeneous catalysis. This review covers the preparative methods, types and catalytic applications of FSs. A special emphasis is given to the metal-free FS catalysts, multiple FS-based catalysts and magnetic FSs. Through this review, we presume that the contribution of FSs to green chemistry can be well understood. The future perspective of FSs and the improvements still required for implementing FS-based catalysts in practical applications have been narrated at the end of this review.

Magnetic MCM-41 nanoparticles as a support for the immobilization of a palladium organometallic catalyst and its application in C–C coupling reactions

An organometallic catalyst of palladium has been immobilized on magnetic MCM-41 nanoparticles and used for C–C coupling reactions. The products were obtained in high yields and good TOF values which were indicate the high efficiency of this catalyst.
