Vanadium(V) and Molybdenum(VI) Complexes Containing ONO Tridentate Schiff Bases and Their Application as Catalysts for Oxidative Bromination of Phenols

Synthesis of Vanadyl Complexes of N-Confused Porphyrins and Their Bromoperoxidase-like Catalytic Activity

Two new vanadyl complexes of N-confused porphyrins (NCPs), [VONCTPP] (V-1) and [VONCP(OMe)8] (V-2), have been synthesized for the first time and investigated as a catalyst for the oxidative bromination reaction of phenol and its derivatives. This article further delineates crystal structures, photophysical, and redox properties of both the vanadyl complexes. Complexes V-1 and V-2 exhibited a significant red shift in their absorption spectra compared with their respective free bases. The single-crystal structure of V-1 revealed that the complex is in the 2H tautomeric form, while EPR studies revealed the +4 oxidation state of vanadium metal having an axial compression with dxy1 configuration. Catalytic potential for bromoperoxidases-like activity has been explored for both complexes V-1 and V-2 for the first time in NCP chemistry with excellent TOF values (4.7-6.3 s-1 for V-1 and 7.3-8.7 s-1 for V-2) using KBr as a source of bromine and H2O2 as a green oxidant in aqueous acidic medium at 298 K. Notably, both catalysts show excellent recyclability over five cycles. The vanadyl-metalated NCPs exhibit excellent stability in the air.

Reactivity of metal dioxo complexes

Metal dioxo chemistry and its diverse reactivity are presented with an emphasis on the mechanisms of reactivity. Work from approximately the last decade is surveyed and organized by metal. In particular, the chemistry of cis-dioxo metal complexes is discussed at length. Reactions are grouped by generic type, including addition across a metal oxo bond, oxygen atom transfer, and radical atom transfer reactions. Attention is given to advances in deoxygenation chemistry, oxidation chemistry, and reductive transformations.

Metal Coordination and Biological Screening of a Schiff Base Derived from 8-Hydroxyquinoline and Benzothiazole

Designing new metallodrugs for anticancer therapy is a driving force in the scientific community. Aiming to contribute to this field, we hereby report the development of a Schiff base (H2L) derived from the condensation of 2-carbaldehyde-8-hydroxyquinoline with 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole and its complexation with transition metal ions. All compounds were characterised by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, which disclosed their structure: [Cu(HL)Cl], [Cu(HL)2], [Ni(HL)(acetate)], [Ni(HL)2], [Ru(HL)Cl(DMSO)], [VO(HL)2] and [Fe(HL)2Cl(H2O)]. Different binding modes were proposed, showing the ligand’s coordination versatility. The ligand proton dissociation constants were determined, and the tested compounds showed high lipophilicity and light sensitivity. The stability of all complexes in aqueous media and their ability to bind to albumin were screened. Based on an antiproliferative in vitro screening, [Ni(HL)(acetate)] and [Ru(HL)Cl(DMSO)] were selected for further studies aiming to investigate their mechanisms of action and therapeutic potential towards colon cancer. The complexes displayed IC50 < 21 μM towards murine (CT-26) and human (HCT-116) colon cancer cell lines. Importantly, both complexes exhibited superior antiproliferative properties compared to the clinically approved 5-fluorouracil. [Ni(HL)(acetate)] induced cell cycle arrest in S phase in CT-26 cells. For [Ru(HL)Cl(DMSO)] this effect was observed in both colon cancer cell lines. Additionally, both compounds significantly inhibited cell migration particularly in the human colon cancer cell line, HCT-116. Overall, the therapeutic potential of both metal complexes was demonstrated.

Synthesis, characterization and application of oxovanadium(iv) complexes with [NNO] donor ligands: X-ray structures of their corresponding dioxovanadium(v) complexes

Two oxovanadium(iv) complexes ligated by [NNO] donor ligands have been synthesized and characterized by ESI-HRMS, elemental (CHN) analysis and spectroscopic (UV-Vis, IR and EPR) techniques. Block shaped brown crystals from the methanolic solutions of these oxovanadium(iv) complexes were obtained during the crystallization process. Crystallographic structures of the resulting crystals revealed that the original oxovanadium(iv) complexes have been transformed into new dioxovanadium(v) complexes with concomitant oxidation of V^IV to V^V. The original oxovanadium(iv) complexes have been identified to be an efficient catalyst for the CO₂ cycloaddition reaction with epoxides resulting up to 100% cyclic carbonate products. The geometries of oxovanadium(iv) complexes are optimized by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the uB3LYP/6-31G**/LANL2DZ level of theory. The geometry and structural parameters of optimized structures of oxovanadium(iv) complexes are in excellent agreement with the parameters of X-ray structures of their dioxovanadium(v) counterparts. Further, TD-DFT and Spin Density Plots for the oxovanadium(iv) complexes are performed in order to get more insights about their electronic absorption and EPR spectroscopies, respectively.
