Synthesis and Characterization of Fe 3 O 4 /Carbon Dot Supported MnO 2 Nanoparticles for the Controlled Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohols

Ultrasonic irradiation-assisted MnFe2O4 nanoparticles catalyzed solvent-free selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde at room temperature

Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) play a vital role in heterogeneous catalysis because of their easy separation, and effective recyclability. Herein, we report the synthesis of MnFe2O4 NPs for use as catalysts in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under mild conditions. The MnFe2O4 NPs have been synthesized by precipitation method followed by hydrothermal ageing at 180 °C for 4.0 h. We have investigated the effect of chitosan and carboxymethyl cellulose on the size or morphology of the formed MnFe2O4 NPs. The X-ray diffraction study confirms the formation of pure and crystalline MnFe2O4 with varying average crystallite sizes ranging from 18 to 28 nm based on the type of additive used. The electron microscopy study reveals that the additive plays a significant role in controlling the morphology of the formed MnFe2O4 NPs. These MnFe2O4 NPs exhibit superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature and can effectively catalyze the solvent-free selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide at room temperature under ultrasonic irradiation. The developed protocol can be extended to various substituted benzyl alcohols having both the electron withdrawing and electron donating groups to afford moderate to excellent yield of the products. The catalyst is magnetically retrievable, highly stable, and can be reused up to the sixth run without significant loss of catalytic activity.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of kojic acid-1,2,3-triazole based dihydropyrano[3,2-b]pyran derivatives using Fe3O4@CQD@CuI as a novel nanomagnetic catalyst

The magnetic nanoparticles coated with carbon quantum dot and copper (I) iodide (Fe₃O₄@CQD@CuI) were used as eco-friendly heterogeneous Lewis / Brønsted acid sites and Cu (I) nanocatalysts. In the first step, it was applied in the synthesis of kojic acid-based dihydropyrano[3,2-b]pyran derivatives in a three-component reaction and in the second step, as a recyclable catalyst for the synthesis of kojic acid-1,2,3-triazole based dihydropyrano[3,2-b]pyran derivatives in the CuI-catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The catalyst was characterized fully by using the different techniques including fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental mapping analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal gravimetric (TG) and value-stream mapping (VSM) methods. The final synthesized derivatives were identified by ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy.

Magneto-Luminescent Nanocomposites Based on Carbon Dots and Ferrite with Potential for Bioapplication

Multifunctional nanocomposites that combine both magnetic and photoluminescent (PL) properties provide significant advantages for nanomedical applications. In this work, a one-stage synthesis of magneto-luminescent nanocomposites (MLNC) with subsequent stabilization is proposed. Microwave synthesis of magnetic carbon dots (M-CDs) was carried out using precursors of carbon dots and magnetic nanoparticles. The effect of stabilization on the morphological and optical properties of nanocomposites has been evaluated. Both types of nanocomposites demonstrate magnetic and PL properties simultaneously. The resulting MLNCs demonstrated excellent solubility in water, tunable PL with a quantum yield of up to 28%, high photostability, and good cytocompatibility. Meanwhile, confocal fluorescence imaging showed that M-CDs were localized in the cell nuclei. Consequently, the multifunctional nanocomposites M-CDs are promising candidates for bioimaging and therapy.
