Ru‐Catalyzed Cross Dehydrogenative Coupling Leading to Si−O and Si−S Bond Formations and Also Stimulating an Alternative Scope for Hydrogenation of C=O, C=N and N=N Bonds

Deciphering the Origin of Regioselectivity in Ru(II)-Catalyzed C-H Annulation of N-Chlorobenzamides with 1,3-Diynes

Understanding the reaction mechanism and origin of regioselectivity in transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation/annulation reactions with 1,3-diynes has remained an intriguing challenge. In this article, to establish the mechanism and decipher the origin of regioselectivity, we report a detailed computational density functional theory-based mechanistic investigation on the recently developed Ru(II)-catalyzed [4 + 2] annulation of N-chlorobenzamides with 1,3-diynes for the synthesis of 3-alkynylated isoquinolone derivatives. Our calculations reveal a redox-neutral pathway for the annulation reaction. The stepwise analysis of the reaction channels indicates the migratory insertion step and the concerted reductive elimination/oxidative addition of the Ru(p-cymene) moiety to form the N-C bond leading to the 3-alkynylated product to be the selectivity- and rate-determining steps, respectively. Finally, the distortion/interaction analysis using the activation-strain model suggests the steric effect as the determining factor for the observed regioselectivity for the formation of the 3-alkynylated product. Overall, the computationally obtained key insights into the catalytic mechanism and the origin of regioselectivity in the C-H activation/annulation reaction can be used as a guide to rationally design and develop novel transformation strategies for heterocycle synthesis.

Predicting Small Molecule Activation including Catalytic Hydrogenation of Dinitrogen Promoted by a Dual Lewis Acid

For decades, N₂ activation and functionalization have required the use of transition metal complexes. Thus, it is one of the most challenging projects to activate the abundant dinitrogen through metal-free systems under mild conditions. Here, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept study on the catalytic hydrogenation of dinitrogen (with activation energy as low as 15.3 kcal mol^-1 ) initiated by a dual Lewis acid (DLA) via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, such a DLA could be also used to activate a series of small molecules including carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, N-ethylenemethylamine, and acetonitrile. It is found that aromaticity plays an important role in stabilizing intermediates and products. Our findings provide an alternative approach to N₂ activation and functionalization, highlighting a great potential of DLA for small molecule activation.

Dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane to functionalize neutral and Li+-encapsulated C60, C70 and C36 fullerene cages: a DFT approach

Mechanistic investigations into the functionalization of three fullerene cages, viz. C₆₀, C₇₀, and C₃₆ through dehydrogenation of ammonia-borane (AB) have been conducted using Density Functional Theory (DFT). In this process of functionalization, different ring fusions, namely (6-6), (6-5) positions for C₆₀ and C₇₀, and an additional (5-5) for C₃₆ fullerene have been investigated. The optimized geometries of all the complexes and transition states have been characterized using the M06-2X functional in conjunction with the 6-31G(d) basis set. The effect of Li⁺-encapsulation on the energetics and activation barriers of H₂ attachment has also been examined. Although the process of functionalization of neutral fullerenes proceeds extensively through concerted pathways, a step-wise route has been observed for the encapsulated systems. NPA charge analysis and Wiberg bond index (WBI) have been used in order to detect the change in the nature of participating hydrogen atoms and validate the variation in the bond order of the C-C connectivity respectively upon hydrogenation. GCRD parameters have also been calculated to explicate the electronic properties of the hydrogenated products. The (6-6) hydrogenation is observed to be favoured thermodynamically and kinetically for both neutral and Li⁺-encapsulated C₆₀ and C₇₀, while (5-5) is found to be the most preferred site for C₃₆ systems. Our theoretical exploration suggests that the covalent functionalization of the fullerene cages can be done successfully viaAB resulting in the stabilization of these systems. In short, the present work will provide a general idea about the detailed mechanism related to the functionalization of fullerene cages, which will further motivate researchers in fullerene chemistry.
