Single nanowire resistive nano-heater for highly localized thermo-chemical reactions: localized hierarchical heterojunction nanowire growth

High-Performance and Rapid-Response Electrical Heaters Derived from Cellulose Nanofiber/Silver Nanowire Nanopapers for Portable Thermal Management

High-performance electrical heaters with outstanding flexibility, superior portability, and mechanical properties are highly desirable for portable thermal management. However, it is still a huge challenge to simultaneously achieve competent electrical heating performances and excellent mechanical properties. Herein, inspired by the Janus structure, versatile electrical heaters are developed via a sequential assembly followed by a hot-pressing strategy. The elaborately designed Janus structure is composed of a nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) layer and a partially wrapped silver nanowire (AgNW) skeleton in the NFC substrate. Owing to the perfect introduction of nano-soldered points induced by thermal welding decoration, the resultant NFC/AgNW papers (NAPs) possess great flexibility, excellent mechanical strength (176.75 MPa), extremely low sheet resistance (0.60 Ω/sq), and superior electrical stabilities against mechanical deformations. Moreover, benefitting from these fascinating attributes, the NAP-based electrical heaters exhibit a remarkable heating temperature (∼220 °C), ultrafast electro-thermal response (<10 s), and groundbreaking long-term stability (∼105 °C for >186 h) and repeatability (>20,000 cycles) with low AgNW contents and driving voltages (0.5-5.0 V), which far surpass those of the previously reported and conventional indium tin oxide-based Joule heaters. Impressively, large-area production feasibilities of NAPs are demonstrated and assembled into multifunctional applications, including personal thermal management, healthcare thermotherapy, multifunctional cups, and smart homes, indicating their promising potential for wearable devices, artificial intelligence, and specific heating systems in the fields of aerospace, military, and intelligent life.

Economic Friendly ZnO-Based UV Sensors Using Hydrothermal Growth: A Review

Ultraviolet (UV) sensors offer significant advantages in human health protection and environmental pollution monitoring. Amongst various materials for UV sensors, the zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructure is considered as one of the most promising candidates due to its incredible electrical, optical, biomedical, energetic and preparing properties. Compared to other fabricating techniques, hydrothermal synthesis has been proven to show special advantages such as economic cost, low-temperature process and excellent and high-yield production. Here, we summarize the latest progress in research about the hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanostructures for UV sensing. We particularly focus on the selective hydrothermal processes and reveal the effect of key factors/parameters on ZnO architectures, such as the laser power source, temperature, growth time, precursor, seeding solution and bases. Furthermore, ZnO hydrothermal nanostructures for UV applications as well as their mechanisms are also summarized. This review will therefore enlighten future ideas of low-temperature and low-cost ZnO-based UV sensors.

Realization of Nanolene: A Planar Array of Perfectly Aligned, Air-Suspended Nanowires

Air suspension and alignment are fundamental requirements to make the best use of nanowires' unique properties; however, satisfying both requirements is very challenging due to the mechanical instability of air-suspended nanowires. Here, a perfectly aligned air-suspended nanowire array called "nanolene" is demonstrated, which has a high mechanical stability owing to a C-channel-shaped cross-section of the nanowires. The excellent mechanical stability is provided through geometrical modeling and finite element method simulations. The C-channel cross-section can be realized by top-down fabrication procedures, resulting in reliable demonstrations of the nanolenes with various materials and geometric parameters. The fabrication process provides large-area uniformity; therefore, nanolene can be considered as a 2D planar platform for 1D nanowire arrays. Thanks to the high mechanical stability of the proposed nanolene, perfectly aligned air-suspended nanowire arrays with an unprecedented length of 1 mm (aspect ratio ≈5100) are demonstrated. Since the nanolene can be used in an energy-efficient nanoheater, two energy-stringent sensors, namely, an air-flow sensor and a carbon monoxide gas sensor, are demonstrated. In particular, the gas sensor achieves sub-10 mW operations, which is a requirement for application in mobile phones. The proposed nanolene will pave the way to accelerate nanowire research and industrialization by providing reliable, high-performance nanowire devices.

Velocimetry of superconducting vortices based on stroboscopic resonances

An experimental determination of the mean vortex velocity in superconductors mostly relies on the measurement of flux-flow resistance with magnetic field, temperature, or driving current. In the present work we introduce a method combining conventional transport measurements and a frequency-tuned flashing pinning potential to obtain reliable estimates of the vortex velocity. The proposed device is characterized using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism, where the velocimetry method exploits the resonances in mean vortex dissipation when temporal commensuration occurs between the vortex crossings and the flashing potential. We discuss the sensitivity of the proposed technique on applied current, temperature and heat diffusion, as well as the vortex core deformations during fast motion.

The Coupled Photothermal Reaction and Transport in a Laser Additive Metal Nanolayer Simultaneous Synthesis and Pattering for Flexible Electronics

The Laser Direct Synthesis and Patterning (LDSP) technology has advantages in terms of processing time and cost compared to nanomaterials-based laser additive microfabrication processes. In LDSP, a scanning laser on the substrate surface induces chemical reactions in the reactive liquid solution and selectively deposits target material in a preselected pattern on the substrate. In this study, we experimentally investigated the effect of the processing parameters and type and concentration of the additive solvent on the properties and growth rate of the resulting metal film fabricated by this LDSP technology. It was shown that reactive metal ion solutions with substantial viscosity yield metal films with superior physical properties. A numerical analysis was also carried out the first time to investigate the coupled opto-thermo-fluidic transport phenomena and the effects on the metal film growth rate. To complete the simulation, the optical properties of the LDSP deposited metal film with a variety of thicknesses were measured. The characteristics of the temperature field and the thermally induced flow associated with the moving heat source are discussed. It was shown that the processing temperature range of the LDSP is from 330 to 390 K. A semi-empirical model for estimating the metal film growth rate using this process was developed based on these results. From the experimental and numerical results, it is seen that, owing to the increased reflectivity of the silver film as its thickness increases, the growth rate decreases gradually from about 40 nm at initial to 10 nm per laser scan after ten scans. This self-controlling effect of LDSP process controls the thickness and improves the uniformity of the fabricated metal film. The growth rate and resulting thickness of the metal film can also be regulated by adjustment of the processing parameters, and thus can be utilized for controllable additive nano/microfabrication.
