Transition-Metal-Ions-Induced Coalescence: Stitching Au Nanoclusters into Tubular Au-Based Nanocomposites

Dissociative reactions of [Au25(SR)18]- at copper oxide nanoparticles and formation of aggregated nanostructures

Reactions between nanoclusters (NCs) have been studied widely in the recent past, but such processes between NCs and metal-oxide nanoparticles (NPs), belonging to two different size ranges, have not been explored earlier. For the first time, we demonstrate the spontaneous reactions between an atomically precise NC, [Au₂₅(PET)₁₈]^- (PET = 2-phenylethanethiolate), and polydispersed copper oxide nanoparticles with an average diameter of 50 nm under ambient conditions. These interparticle reactions result in the formation of alloy NCs and copper-doped NC fragments, which assemble to form nanospheres at the end of the reaction. High-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS), transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), electron tomography, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies were performed to understand the structures formed. The results from our study show that interparticle reactions can be extended to a range of chemical systems, leading to diverse alloy NCs and self-assembled colloidal superstructures.

Novel Self-Assembled Multifunctional Nanoprobes for Second-Near-Infrared-Fluorescence-Image-Guided Breast Cancer Surgery and Enhanced Radiotherapy Efficacy

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is the predominant treatment approach for initial breast cancer. However, due to a lack of effective methods evaluating BCS margins, local recurrence caused by positive margins remains an issue. Accordingly, radiation therapy (RT) is a common modality in patients with advanced breast cancer. However, while RT also protects normal tissue and enhances tumor bed doses to improve therapeutic effects, current radiosensitizers cannot meet these urgent clinical needs. To address this, a novel self-assembled multifunctional nanoprobe (NP) gadolinium (Gd)-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-human serum albumin (HSA)@indocyanine green-Bevacizumab (NPs-Bev) is synthesized to improve the efficacy of fluorescence-image-guided BCS and RT. Fluorescence image guidance of the second near infrared NP improves complete resection in tumor-bearing mice and accurately discriminates between benign and malignant mammary tissue in transgenic mice. Moreover, targeting tumors with NPs induces more reactive oxygen species under X-ray radiation therapy, which not only increases RT sensitivity, but also reduces tumor progression in mice. Interestingly, self-assembled NPs-Bev using HSA, the magnetic resonance contrast agent and Bevacizumab-targeting vascular growth factor A, which are clinically safe reagents, are safe in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, the novel self-assembled NPs provide a solid precision therapy platform to treat breast cancer.

Nano-Sized NiO Immobilized on Au/CNT for Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation: Influences of Hybrid Structure and Interface

Tiny gold nanoparticles were successfully anchored on carbon nanotubes (CNT) with NiO decoration by a two-step synthesis. Characterizations suggested that Ni species in an oxidative state preferred to be highly dispersed on CNT. During the synthesis, in situ reduction by NaBH₄ and thermal treatment in oxidation atmosphere were consequently carried out, causing the formation of Au-Ni-O_x interfaces and bimetal hybrid structure depending on the Ni/Au atomic ratios. With an appropriate Ni/Au atomic ratio of 8:1, Ni atoms migrated into the sub-layers of Au particles and induced the lattice contraction of Au particles, whilst a higher Ni/Au atomic ratio led to the accumulation of NiO fractions surrounding Au particles. Both contributed to the well-defined Au-Ni-O_x interface and accelerated reaction rates. Nickel species acted as structure promoters with essential Au-Ni-O_x hybrid structure as well as the active oxygen supplier, accounting for the enhanced activity for benzyl alcohol oxidation. However, the over-layer of unsaturated gold sites easily occured under a high Ni/Au ratio, resulting in a lower reaction rate. With an Au/Ni atomic ratio of 8:1, the specific rate of AuNi₈/CNT reached 185 μmol/g/s at only 50 °C in O₂ at ordinary pressure.

Architecture and Preparation of Hollow Catalytic Devices

Since pioneering work done in the late 1990s, synthesis of functional hollow materials has experienced a rapid growth over the past two decades while their applications have been proven to be advantageous across many technological fields. In the field of heterogeneous catalysis, the development of micro- and nanoscale hollow materials as catalytic devices has also yielded promising results, because of their higher activity, stability, and selectivity. Herein, the architecture and preparation of these catalysts with tailorable composition and morphology are reviewed. First, synthesis of hollow materials is introduced according to the classification of template mediated, template free, and combined approaches. Second, different architectural designs of hollow catalytic devices, such as those without functionalization, with active components supported onto hollow materials, with active components incorporated within porous shells, and with active components confined within interior cavities, are evaluated respectively. The observed catalytic performances of this new class of catalysts are correlated to structural merits of individual configuration. Examples that demonstrate synthetic approaches and architected configurations are provided. Lastly, possible future directions are proposed to advance this type of hollow catalytic devices on the basis of our personal perspectives.

Lanthanide-Doped Photoluminescence Hollow Structures: Recent Advances and Applications

Lanthanide-doped nanomaterials have attracted significant attention for their preeminent properties and widespread applications. Due to the unique characteristic, the lanthanide-doped photoluminescence materials with hollow structures may provide advantages including enhanced light harvesting, intensified electric field density, improved luminescent property, and larger drug loading capacity. Herein, the synthesis, properties, and applications of lanthanide-doped photoluminescence hollow structures (LPHSs) are comprehensively reviewed. First, different strategies for the engineered synthesis of LPHSs are described in detail, which contain hard, soft, self-templating methods and other techniques. Thereafter, the relationship between their structure features and photoluminescence properties is discussed. Then, niche applications including biomedicines, bioimaging, therapy, and energy storage/conversion are focused on and superiorities of LPHSs for these applications are particularly highlighted. Finally, keen insights into the challenges and personal prospects for the future development of the LPHSs are provided.

Architectural Designs and Synthetic Strategies of Advanced Nanocatalysts

Advanced nanocatalysts with high compositional and structural tailorability have emerged as a new class of heterogeneous catalysts exhibiting many new technical merits over their conventional counterparts. Generally, preparation of such catalysts involves the integration of catalyst components with compositional, size, and shape controls into a larger material system in order to bring along collective and synergetic effects of individual components. Herein, a brief review of architectural designs and synthetic strategies for making these nanocatalysts is presented. Due to length constraints, only four major types of them are highlighted together with some general rules of design and synthesis. Finally, a critical outline of future perspective in this field is proposed.

A Modular System for the Design of Stimuli-Responsive Multifunctional Nanoparticle Aggregates by Use of Host-Guest Chemistry

A self-assembly approach for the design of multifunctional nanomaterials consisting of different nanoparticles (gold, iron oxide, and lanthanide-doped LiYF₄ ) is developed. This modular system takes advantage of the light-responsive supramolecular host-guest chemistry of β-cyclodextrin and arylazopyrazole, which enables the dynamic and reversible self-assembly of particles to spherical nanoparticle aggregates in aqueous solution. Due to the magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, the aggregates can be manipulated by an external magnetic field leading to the formation of linear structures. As a result of the integration of upconversion nanoparticles, the aggregates are additionally responsive to near-infrared light and can be redispersed by use of the upconversion effect. By varying the nanoparticle and linker concentrations the composition, size, shape, and properties of the multifunctional nanoparticle aggregates can be fine-tuned.

Hollow CuxO (x = 2, 1) micro/nanostructures: synthesis, fundamental properties and applications

In this review, we comprehensively summarize the important advances in hollow Cu_xO micro/nanostructures, including the universal synthesis strategies, the interfacial Cu–O atomic structures as well as the intrinsic properties, and potential applications. Remarks on emerging issues and promising research directions are also discussed.
