A Nonconventional Approach to Patterned Nanoarrays of DNA Strands for Template-Assisted Assembly of Polyfluorene Nanowires

Spatially Ordered Arrays of Colloidal Inorganic Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals via Controlled Droplet Evaporation in a Confined Geometry

Inorganic metal halide perovskite nanocrystals, such as quantum dots (QDs), have emerged as intriguing building blocks for miniaturized light-emitting and optoelectronic devices. Although conventional lithographic approaches and printing techniques allow for discrete patterning at the micro/nanoscale, it is still important to utilize intrinsic QDs with the concomitant retaining of physical and chemical stability during the fabrication process. Here, we report a simple strategy for the evaporative self-assembly to produce highly ordered structures of CsPbBr₃ and CsPbI₃ QDs on a substrate in a precisely controllable manner by using a capillary-bridged restrict geometry. Quantum confined CsPbBr₃ and CsPbI₃ nanocrystals, synthesized via a modified hot-injection method with excess halide ions condition, were readily adapted to prepare colloidal QD solutions. Subsequently, the spatially patterned arrays of the perovskite QD rings were crafted in a confirmed geometry with high fidelity by spontaneous solvent evaporation. These self-organized concentric rings were systemically characterized regarding the center-to-center distance, width, and height of the patterns. Our results not only facilitate a fundamental understanding of assembly in the perovskite QDs to enable the solution-printing process but also provide a simple route for offering promising practical applications in optoelectronics.

Spontaneously promoted osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts on ultrathin layers of black phosphorus

Recently, black phosphorus (BP) has garnered great attention as one of newly emerging two-dimensional nanomaterials. Especially, the degraded platelets of BP in the physiological environment were shown to be nontoxic phosphate anions, which are a component of bone tissue and can be used for mineralization. Here, our study presents the potential of BP as biofunctional and biocompatible nanomaterials for the application to bone tissue engineering and regeneration. An ultrathin layer of BP nanodots (BPNDs) was created on a glass substrate by using a flow-enabled self-assembly process, which yielded a highly uniform deposition of BPNDs in a unique confined geometry. The BPND-coated substrates represented unprecedented favorable topographical microenvironments and supportive matrices suitable for the growth and survival of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts. The prepared substrates promoted the spontaneous osteodifferentiation of preosteoblasts, which had been confirmed by determining alkaline phosphatase activity and extracellular calcium deposition as early- and late-stage markers of osteogenic differentiation, respectively. Furthermore, the BPND-coated substrates upregulated the expression of some specific genes (i.e., RUNX2, OCN, OPN, and Vinculin) and proteins, which are closely related to osteogenesis. Conclusively, our BPND-coating strategy suggests that a biologically inert surface can be readily activated as a cell-favorable nanoplatform enabled with excellent biocompatibility and osteogenic ability.

Large-Scale Rapid Positioning of Hierarchical Assemblies of Conjugated Polymers via Meniscus-Assisted Self-Assembly

Rapid and deliberate patterning of nanomaterials over a large area is desirable for device manufacturing. We report a method for meniscus-assisted self-assembly (MASA)-enabled rapid positioning of hierarchically assembled dots and stripes composed of luminescent conjugated polymer over two length scales. Periodically arranged conjugated poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) polymers, yield dots, punch-holes and stripes at microscopic scale via MASA. Concurrent self-assembly of PFOs into two-dimensional lenticular crystals within each dot, punch-hole and stripe is realized at nanoscopic scale. Hierarchical assembly is achieved by constraining the evaporation of the PFOs solution in two approximately parallel plates via a MASA process. The three-phase contact line (TCL) of the liquid meniscus of the PFOs was printed using the upper plate, yielding an array of curved stripes. Rapid creation of hierarchical assemblies via MASA opens up possibilities for large-scale organization of a wide range of soft matters and nanomaterials.

Enabling the Selective Detection of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals via Molecularly Surface-Imprinted "Coffee Rings"

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) represent an intriguing class of synthetic materials that can selectively recognize and bind chemical or biological molecules in a variety of value-added applications in sensors, catalysis, drug delivery, antibodies, and receptors. In this context, many advanced methods of implementing functional MIP materials have been actively studied. Herein, we report a robust strategy to produce highly ordered arrays of surface-imprinted polymer patterns with unprecedented regularity for MIP-based sensor platform, which involves the controlled evaporative self-assembly process of MIP precursor solution in a confined geometry consisting of a spherical lens on a flat Si substrate (i.e., sphere-on-flat geometry) to synergistically utilize the "coffee-ring" effect and repetitive stick-slip motions of the three-phase contact line simply by solvent evaporation. Highly ordered arrays of the ring-patterned MIP films are then polymerized under UV irradiation to achieve semi-interpenetrating polymer networks. The extraction of templated target molecules from the surface-imprinted ring-patterned MIP films leaves behind copious cavities for the recognizable specific "memory sites" to efficiently detect small molecules. As a result, the elaborated surface structuring effect, sensitivity, and specific selectivity of the coffee-ring-based MIP sensors are scrutinized by capitalizing on an endocrine-disrupting chemical, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), as an example. Clearly, the evaporative self-assembly of nonvolatile solutes in a confined geometry renders the creation of familiar yet ordered coffee-ring-like patterns for a wide range of applications, including sensors, scaffolds for cell motility, templates, substrates for neuron guidance, etc., thereby dispensing with the need of multistep lithography techniques and external fields.

Wicking-Driven Evaporation Self-Assembly of Carbon Nanotubes on Fabrics: Generating Controlled Orientational Structures

Nanostructures with orientational order exhibit excellent electrical and optical properties; however, their construction on complex fabrics is challenging. Here, we demonstrate the potential of wicking-driven evaporation self-assembly in the oriented arrangement of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on fabrics. The solution-evaporation self-assembly in combination with the fabric wicking effect leads to convective flows along the fibers, which makes it possible to prepare orientational nanostructures over large fabric surface areas. The orientation of CNTs is controlled by the fluid drag force from the convective flow during drying, thus the interaction between the CNT and the solution is crucial. We show that the nanostructures of CNTs on fibers depend, for example, on the evaporation temperature, component concentration, and solution pH. Weakening the viscous connection of the fluid with CNTs can lead to an interesting eddy nanostructure of CNTs. The electrical conductivity of the assembled fabrics increases strongly with the degree of orientation and the assembly cycles of CNTs. In this work, the large-scale orientational order of nanomaterial achieved by wicking-driven evaporation self-assembly offers a new strategy for constructing three-dimensional oriented conductive networks in electronic textiles.

Graphene Templated DNA Arrays and Biotin-Streptavidin Sensitive Bio-Transistors Patterned by Dynamic Self-Assembly of Polymeric Films Confined within a Roll-on-Plate Geometry

Patterning of surfaces with a simple strategy provides insights into the functional interfaces by suitable modification of the surface by novel techniques. Especially, highly ordered structural topographies and chemical features from the wide range of interfaces have been considered as important characteristics to understand the complex relationship between the surface chemistries and biological systems. Here, we report a simple fabrication method to create patterned surfaces over large areas using evaporative self-assembly that is designed to produce a sacrificial template and lithographic etch masks of polymeric stripe patterns, ranging from micrometer to nanoscale. By facilitating a roll-on-plate geometry, the periodically patterned surface structures formed by repetitive slip-stick motions were thoroughly examined to be used for the deposition of the Au nanoparticles decorated graphene oxide (i.e., AuNPs, ~21 nm) and the formation of conductive graphene channels. The fluorescently labeled thiol-modified DNA was applied on the patterned arrays of graphene oxide (GO)/AuNPs, and biotin-streptavidin sensitive devices built with graphene-based transistors (GFETs, effective mobility of ~320 cm² V^-1 s^-1) were demonstrated as examples of the platform for the next-generation biosensors with the high sensing response up to ~1 nM of target analyte (i.e., streptavidin). Our strategy suggests that the stripe patterned arrays of polymer films as sacrificial templates can be a simple route to creating highly sensitive biointerfaces and highlighting the development of new chemically patterned surfaces composed of graphene-based nanomaterials.

One-Step Laser Patterned Highly Uniform Reduced Graphene Oxide Thin Films for Circuit-Enabled Tattoo and Flexible Humidity Sensor Application

The conversion of graphene oxide (GO) into reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is imperative for the electronic device applications of graphene-based materials. Efficient and cost-effective fabrication of highly uniform GO films and the successive reduction into rGO on a large area is still a cumbersome task through conventional protocols. Improved film casting of GO sheets on a polymeric substrate with quick and green reduction processes has a potential that may establish a path to the practical flexible electronics. Herein, we report a facile deposition process of GO on flexible polymer substrates to create highly uniform thin films over a large area by a flow-enabled self-assembly approach. The self-assembly of GO sheets was successfully performed by dragging the trapped solution of GO in confined geometry, which consisted of an upper stationary blade and a lower moving substrate on a motorized translational stage. The prepared GO thin films could be selectively reduced and facilitated from the simple laser direct writing process for programmable circuit printing with the desired configuration and less sample damage due to the non-contact mode operation without the use of photolithography, toxic chemistry, or high-temperature reduction methods. Furthermore, two different modes of the laser operating system for the reduction of GO films turned out to be valuable for the construction of novel graphene-based high-throughput electrical circuit boards compatible with integrating electronic module chips and flexible humidity sensors.
