Memristor-Based Bionic Tactile Devices: Opening the Door for Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence

Bioinspired tactile devices can effectively mimic and reproduce the functions of the human tactile system, presenting significant potential in the field of next-generation wearable electronics. In particular, memristor-based bionic tactile devices have attracted considerable attention due to their exceptional characteristics of high flexibility, low power consumption, and adaptability. These devices provide advanced wearability and high-precision tactile sensing capabilities, thus emerging as an important research area within bioinspired electronics. This paper delves into the integration of memristors with other sensing and controlling systems and offers a comprehensive analysis of the recent research advancements in memristor-based bionic tactile devices. These advancements incorporate artificial nociceptors and flexible electronic skin (e-skin) into the category of bio-inspired sensors equipped with capabilities for sensing, processing, and responding to stimuli, which are expected to catalyze revolutionary changes in human-computer interaction. Finally, this review discusses the challenges faced by memristor-based bionic tactile devices in terms of material selection, structural design, and sensor signal processing for the development of artificial intelligence. Additionally, it also outlines future research directions and application prospects of these devices, while proposing feasible solutions to address the identified challenges.

Anti-adhesive and antibacterial chitosan/PEO nanofiber dressings with high breathability for promoting wound healing

Wound dressings are crucial for wound healing. Ideal wound dressings should possess many functions such as wettability, antibacterial activity and anti-adherent property to promote wound healing. In the present study solution blown spinning (SBS) technology was applied to prepare chitosan/polyethylene oxide (CS/PEO) nanofiber dressings in high efficiency. The obtained nanofiber dressings were treated with anhydrous ethanol to improve the fiber structure and enhance the functionality of the fiber dressings. The results show that the treated nanofibers had higher crystallinities and higher CS contents. The CS/PEO nanofiber dressings fabricated by using no additives and crosslinking had excellent wettability, water stability and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reached to over 99.99 %. In addition, the CS/PEO nanofiber dressings exhibited high breathability, antioxidant activity and anti-adhesion function. The in vivo animal experiment confirmed that the nanofiber dressings enhanced cell proliferation and significantly accelerated the wound healing within 10 days. The developed CS/PEO nanofiber dressings have great potential in the clinical field of wound healing.

Advanced function, design and application of skin substitutes for skin regeneration

The development of skin substitutes aims to replace, mimic, or improve the functions of human skin, regenerate damaged skin tissue, and replace or enhance skin function. This includes artificial skin, scaffolds or devices designed for treatment, imitation, or improvement of skin function in wounds and injuries. Therefore, tremendous efforts have been made to develop functional skin substitutes. However, there is still few reports systematically discuss the relationship between the advanced function and design requirements. In this paper, we review the classification, functions, and design requirements of artificial skin or skin substitutes. Different manufacturing strategies for skin substitutes such as hydrogels, 3D/4D printing, electrospinning, microfluidics are summarized. This review also introduces currently available skin substitutes in clinical trials and on the market and the related regulatory requirements. Finally, the prospects and challenges of skin substitutes in the field of tissue engineering are discussed.

Biomimetic Electronic Skin through Hierarchical Polymer Structural Design

Human skin comprises multiple hierarchical layers that perform various functions such as protection, sensing, and structural support. Developing electronic skin (E-skin) with similar properties has broad implications in health monitoring, prosthetics, and soft robotics. While previous efforts have predominantly concentrated on sensory capabilities, this study introduces a hierarchical polymer system that not only structurally resembles the epidermis-dermis bilayer structure of skin but also encompasses sensing functions. The system comprises a polymeric hydrogel, representing the "dermis", and a superimposed nanoporous polymer film, forming the "epidermis". Within the film, interconnected nanoparticles mimic the arrangement of interlocked corneocytes within the epidermis. The fabrication process employs a robust in situ interfacial precipitation polymerization of specific water-soluble monomers that become insoluble during polymerization. This process yields a hybrid layer establishing a durable interface between the film and hydrogel. Beyond the structural mimicry, this hierarchical structure offers functionalities resembling human skin, which includes (1) water loss protection of hydrogel by tailoring the hydrophobicity of the upper polymer film; (2) tactile sensing capability via self-powered triboelectric nanogenerators; (3) built-in gold nanowire-based resistive sensor toward temperature and pressure sensing. This hierarchical polymeric approach represents a potent strategy to replicate both the structure and functions of human skin in synthetic designs.

Novel Injectable, Self-Healing, Long-Effective Bacteriostatic, and Healed-Promoting Hydrogel Wound Dressing and Controlled Drug Delivery Mechanisms

Multivalent ion cross-linking has been used to form hydrogels between sodium alginate (SA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) in previous studies. However, more stable and robust covalent cross-linking is rarely reported. Herein, we present a facile approach to fabricate a SA and HA hydrogel for wound dressings with injectable, good biocompatibility, and high ductility. HA was first reacted with ethylenediamine to graft an amino group. Then, it was cross-linked with oxidized SA with dialdehyde to form hydrogel networks. The dressing can effectively promote cell migration and wound healing. To increase the antibacterial property of the dressing, we successfully loaded tetracycline hydrochloride into the hydrogel as a model drug. The drug can be released slowly in the alkaline environment of chronic wounds, and the hydrogel releases drugs again in the more acidic environment with wound healing, achieving a long-term antibacterial effect. In addition, one-dimensional partial differential equations based on Fickian diffusion with time-varying diffusion coefficients and hydrogel thicknesses were used to model the entire complex drug release process and to predict drug release.

Development and characterization of polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) loaded chitosan polyplex: In vitro and in vivo evaluation of wound healing activity

Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) is an accelerated diabetic wound healing therapy with promising abilities to promote cell growth, angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, and reduce inflammation where its sustainable delivery and release behavior is critical to ensure effective wound healing properties. Therefore, a nanopolyplex was developed here, by encapsulating PDRN with chitosan to affirm its delivery systematically. The physicochemical characterization revealed its successful encapsulation which facilitates the gradual release of PDRN. In vitro studies of the polyplex demonstrated no cytotoxicity and enhanced cell proliferation and migration properties with high antimicrobial activities. In vivo, wound healing studies in Wistar rats dorsal skin defect model induced with diabetes mellitus affirm the highest wound healing activity and wound closure rate by chitosan/PDRN polyplex treatment. Considerably high histopathological changes such as epithelialization, collagen deposition, blood vessels, and hair follicle formation were observed under the polyplex treatment. The immunohistochemical analysis for platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (CD31) and cluster of differentiation (CD68) revealed the ability of polyplex to increase CD31 expression and decrease CD68 expression thereby promoting the wound healing process. Collectively, these results suggest that significantly accelerated, high-quality wound healing effects could be obtained by the developed chitosan/PDRN polyplex and thus it could be introduced as a potential therapeutic product for diabetic wound healing.

Functional carbohydrate-based hydrogels for diabetic wound therapy

Diabetes wound are grave and universal complications of diabetes. Owing to poor treatment course, high amputation rate and mortality, diabetes wound treatment and care have become a global challenge. Wound dressings have received much attention due to their ease of use, good therapeutic effect, and low costs. Among them, carbohydrate-based hydrogels with excellent biocompatibility are considered to be the best candidates for wound dressings. Based on this, we first systematically summarized the problems and healing mechanism of diabetes wounds. Next, common treatment methods and wound dressings were discussed, and the application of various carbohydrate-based hydrogels and their corresponding functionalization (antibacterial, antioxidant, autoxidation and bioactive substance delivery) in the treatment of diabetes wounds were emphatically introduced. Ultimately, the future development of carbohydrate-based hydrogel dressings was proposed. This review aims to provide a deeper understanding of wound treatment and theoretical support for the design of hydrogel dressings.

Facile fabrication of strong and conductive cellulose hydrogels with wide temperature tolerance for flexible sensors

Cellulose-based ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) have found extensive applications in flexible electronics and multifunctional sensors. However, simultaneous realization of sufficient conductivity, superior mechanical property and extreme environment tolerance for ICHs remains to be a huge challenge. In this work, a facile one-pot approach was developed to fabricate ICHs by directly dissolving cotton linter cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in a concentrated ZnCl₂ solution. By regulating the content of PVA in ICHs, the optimal hydrogel (Gel-5) exhibits a tensile strength of 0.30 MPa, a compressive strength of 2.05 MPa and a conductivity of 8.16 S m^-1. Moreover, the resulting dual-network ICHs present high transparency, good thermal reversibility and desirable ionic conductivity. Due to the high concentration of inorganic salts in the porous dual-network structure, the ICH presents good anti-drying and anti-freezing (as low as -90 °C) properties. Such hydrogel can be assembled into multi-functional sensors for human motion and temperature monitoring, and they demonstrate durable sensitivity, cycling stability in a wide operating temperature. This work will shed light on the design of cellulose-based hydrogels with good ionic conductivity and mechanical performance under extreme conditions.

Recent Progress of Tactile and Force Sensors for Human-Machine Interaction

Human-Machine Interface (HMI) plays a key role in the interaction between people and machines, which allows people to easily and intuitively control the machine and immersively experience the virtual world of the meta-universe by virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) technology. Currently, wearable skin-integrated tactile and force sensors are widely used in immersive human-machine interactions due to their ultra-thin, ultra-soft, conformal characteristics. In this paper, the recent progress of tactile and force sensors used in HMI are reviewed, including piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, triboelectric, and other sensors. Then, this paper discusses how to improve the performance of tactile and force sensors for HMI. Next, this paper summarizes the HMI for dexterous robotic manipulation and VR/AR applications. Finally, this paper summarizes and proposes the future development trend of HMI.

Skin-Inspired Tactile Sensor on Cellulose Fiber Substrates with Interfacial Microstructure for Health Monitoring and Guitar Posture Feedback

Skin-inspired flexible tactile sensors, with interfacial microstructure, are developed on cellulose fiber substrates for subtle pressure applications. Our device is made of two cellulose fiber substrates with conductive microscale structures, which emulate the randomly distributed spinosum in between the dermis and epidermis layers of the human skin. The microstructures not only permit a higher stress concentration at the tips but also generate electrical contact points and change contact resistance between the top and bottom substrates when the pressure is applied. Meanwhile, cellulose fibers possessing viscoelastic and biocompatible properties are utilized as substrates to mimic the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin. The electrical contact resistances (ECR) are then measured to quantify the tactile information. The microstructures and the substrate properties are studied to enhance the sensors' sensitivity. A very high sensitivity (14.4 kPa^-1) and fast recovery time (approx. 2.5 ms) are achieved in the subtle pressure range (approx. 0-0.05 kPa). The device can detect subtle pressures from the human body due to breathing patterns and voice activity showing its potential for healthcare. Further, the guitar strumming and chord progression of the players with different skill levels are assessed to monitor the muscle strain during guitar playing, showing its potential for posture feedback in playing guitar or another musical instrument.

The perceived effects of augmented trail sensing and mood recognition abilities in a human-fish biohybrid system

The use of technologies to enhance human and animal perception has been explored in pioneering research about artificial life and biohybrid systems. These attempts have revealed that augmented sensing abilities can emerge from new interactions between individuals within or across species. Nevertheless, the diverse effects of different augmented capabilities have been less examined and compared. In this work, we built a human-fish biohybrid system that enhanced the vision of the ornamental fish by projecting human participants onto the arena background. In contrast, human participants were equipped with a mixed-reality device, which visualized individual fish trails (representing situation-oriented perceptions) and emotions (representing communication-oriented perceptions). We investigated the impacts of the two enhanced perceptions on the human side and documented the perceived effects from three aspects. First, both augmented perceptions considerably increase participants' attention toward ornamental fish, and the impact of emotion recognition is more potent than trail sense. Secondly, the frequency of human-fish interactions increases with the equipped perceptions. The mood recognition ability on the human side can indirectly promote the recorded positive mood of fish. Thirdly, most participants mentioned that they felt closer to those fish which had mood recognition ability, even if we added some mistakes in the accuracy of mood recognition. In contrast, the addition of trail sensing ability does not lead to a similar effect on the mental bond. These findings reveal several aspects of different perceived effects between the enhancements of communication-oriented and situation-oriented perceptions.

Al2O3/HfO2 Nanolaminate Dielectric Boosting IGZO-Based Flexible Thin-Film Transistors

HIGHLIGHTS

A stable laminated Al₂O₃/HfO₂ insulator is developed by atomic layer deposition at a relatively lower temperature of 150 °C. The flexible thin-film transistors (TFTs) with bottom-gate top-contacted configuration are fabricated on a flexible substrate with the Al₂O₃/HfO₂ insulator. The flexible TFTs present the carrier mobilities of 9.7 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹, ON/OFF ratio of ~ 1.3 × 10⁶, subthreshold voltage of 0.1 V, saturated current up to 0.83 mA, and subthreshold swing of 0.256 V dec⁻¹.

ABSTRACT

Flexible thin-film transistors (TFTs) have attracted wide interest in the development of flexible and wearable displays or sensors. However, the conventional high processing temperatures hinder the preparation of stable and reliable dielectric materials on flexible substrates. Here, we develop a stable laminated Al₂O₃/HfO₂ insulator by atomic layer deposition at a relatively lower temperature of 150 °C. A sputtered amorphous indium-gallium-zinc oxide (IGZO) with the stoichiometry of In_0.37Ga_0.20Zn_0.18O_0.25 is used as the active channel material. The flexible TFTs with bottom-gate top-contacted configuration are further fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate with the Al₂O₃/HfO₂ nanolaminates. Benefited from the unique structural and compositional configuration in the nanolaminates consisting of amorphous Al₂O₃, crystallized HfO₂, and the aluminate Al–Hf–O phase, the as-prepared TFTs present the carrier mobilities of 9.7 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹, ON/OFF ratio of ~ 1.3 × 10⁶, subthreshold voltage of 0.1 V, saturated current up to 0.83 mA, and subthreshold swing of 0.256 V dec⁻¹, signifying a high-performance flexible TFT, which simultaneously able to withstand the bending radius of 40 mm. The TFTs with nanolaminate insulator possess satisfactory humidity stability and hysteresis behavior in a relative humidity of 60–70%, a temperature of 25–30 °C environment. Fabrication of SA/Gel/C scaffold with 3D bioprinting to generate micro-nano porosity structure for skin wound healing: a detailed animal in vivo study

Bioprinting has exhibited remarkable promises for the fabrication of functional skin substitutes. However, there are some significant challenges for the treatment of full-thickness skin defects in clinical practice. It is necessary to determine bioinks with suitable mechanical properties and desirable biocompatibilities. Additionally, the key for printing skin is to design the skin structure optimally, enabling the function of the skin. In this study, the full-thickness skin scaffolds were prepared with a gradient pore structure constructing the dense layer, epidermis, and dermis by different ratios of bioinks. We hypothesized that the dense layer protects the wound surface and maintains a moist environment on the wound surface. By developing a suitable hydrogel bioink formulation (sodium alginate/gelatin/collagen), to simulate the physiological structure of the skin via 3D printing, the proportion of hydrogels was optimized corresponding to each layer. These results reveal that the scaffold has interconnected macroscopic channels, and sodium alginate/gelatin/collagen scaffolds accelerated wound healing, reduced skin wound contraction, and re-epithelialization in vivo. It is expected to provide a rapid and economical production method of skin scaffolds for future clinical applications.

Tissue-Like Optoelectronic Neural Interface Enabled by PEDOT:PSS Hydrogel for Cardiac and Neural Stimulation

Optoelectronic biointerfaces have made a significant impact on modern science and technology from understanding the mechanisms of the neurotransmission to the recovery of the vision for blinds. They are based on the cell interfaces made of organic or inorganic materials such as silicon, graphene, oxides, quantum dots, and π-conjugated polymers, which are dry and stiff unlike a cell/tissue environment. On the other side, wet and soft hydrogels have recently been started to attract significant attention for bioelectronics because of its high-level tissue-matching biomechanics and biocompatibility. However, it is challenging to obtain optimal opto-bioelectronic devices by using hydrogels requiring device, heterojunction, and hydrogel engineering. Here, an optoelectronic biointerface integrated with a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate), PEDOT:PSS, hydrogel that simultaneously achieves efficient, flexible, stable, biocompatible, and safe photostimulation of cells is demonstrated. Besides their interfacial tissue-like biomechanics, ≈34 kPa, and high-level biocompatibility, hydrogel-integration facilitates increase in charge injection amounts sevenfolds with an improved responsivity of 156 mA W^-1 , stability under mechanical bending , and functional lifetime over three years. Finally, these devices enable stimulation of individual hippocampal neurons and photocontrol of beating frequency of cardiac myocytes via safe charge-balanced capacitive currents. Therefore, hydrogel-enabled optoelectronic biointerfaces hold great promise for next-generation wireless neural and cardiac implants.

Bio-inspired flexible electronics for smart E-skin

"Learning from nature" provides endless inspiration for scientists to invent new materials and devices. Here, we review state-of-the-art technologies in flexible electronics, with a focus on bio-inspired smart skins. This review focuses on the development of E-skin for sensing a variety of parameters such as mechanical loads, temperature, light, and biochemical cues, with a trend of increased integration of multiple functions. It highlights the most recent advances in flexible electronics inspired by animals such as chameleons, squids, and octopi whose bodies have remarkable camouflage, mimicry, or self-healing attributes. Implantable devices, being overlapped with smart E-skin in a broad sense, are included in this review. This review outlines the remaining challenges in flexible electronics and the prospects for future development for biomedical applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This article reviews the state-of-the-art technologies of bio-inspired smart electronic skin (E-skin) developed in a "learning-mimicking-creating" (LMC) cycle. We emphasize the most recent innovations in the development of E-skin for sensing physical changes and biochemical cues, and for integrating multiple sensing modalities. We discuss the achievements in implantable materials, wireless communication, and device design pertaining to implantable flexible electronics. This review will provide prospective insights integrating material, electronics, and mechanical engineering viewpoints to foster new ideas for next-generation smart E-skin.

Mechanical modeling and characterization of human skin: A review

This paper reviews the advances made in recent years on modeling approaches and experimental techniques to characterize the mechanical properties of human skin. The skin is the largest organ of the human body that has a complex multi-layered structure with different mechanical behaviors. The mechanical properties of human skin play an important role in distinguishing between healthy and unhealthy skin. Furthermore, knowing these mechanical properties enables computer simulation, skin research, clinical studies, as well as diagnosis and treatment monitoring of skin diseases. This paper reviews the recent efforts on modeling skin using linear, nonlinear, viscoelastic, and anisotropic materials. The work also focuses on aging effects, microstructure analysis, and non-invasive methods for skin testing. A detailed explanation of the skin structure and numerical models, such as finite element models, are discussed in this work. This work also compares different experimental methods that measure the mechanical properties of human skin. The work reviews the experimental results in the literature and shows how the mechanical properties of human skin vary with the skin sites, the layers, and the structure of human skin. The paper also discusses how state-of-the-art technology can advance skin research.

Skin protein-derived peptide-conjugated vesicular nanocargos for selected skin cell targeting and consequent activation

Several studies have reported that a drug nanocarrier conjugated with ligands having cell binding ability improves drug delivery performance, but multiple cell-targeting and the resultant activation in designated cells has not been investigated yet. This study reports a skin cell multi-targeting vesicular nanocargo system. We selectively conjugated several skin protein-derived cell-targeting peptides (CTPs), including KTTKS, NAP-amide, and Lam332, to amphiphilic polymer-reinforced lipid nanovesicles (PLNVs) to specifically target fibroblasts, melanocytes, and keratinocytes, respectively, through effective association with the corresponding cell membrane receptors. We then showed that CTP-conjugated PLNVs specifically bind to the designated skin cells, even in a mixture of different types of skin cells, eventually leading to skin cell multi-targeting and consequent activation. These results highlight that this CTP-conjugated PLNV system has significant potential for developing an intelligent cellular drug delivery technology for dermatological applications.

Dermatillomania: Strategies for Developing Protective Biomaterials/Cloth

Dermatillomania or skin picking disorder (SPD) is a chronic, recurrent, and treatment resistant neuropsychiatric disorder with an underestimated prevalence that has a concerning negative impact on an individual’s health and quality of life. The current treatment strategies focus on behavioral and pharmacological therapies that are not very effective. Thus, the primary objective of this review is to provide an introduction to SPD and discuss its current treatment strategies as well as to propose biomaterial-based physical barrier strategies as a supporting or alternative treatment. To this end, searches were conducted within the PubMed database and Google Scholar, and the results obtained were organized and presented as per the following categories: prevalence, etiology, consequences, diagnostic criteria, and treatment strategies. Furthermore, special attention was provided to alternative treatment strategies and biomaterial-based physical treatment strategies. A total of six products with the potential to be applied as physical barrier strategies in supporting SPD treatment were shortlisted and discussed. The results indicated that SPD is a complex, underestimated, and underemphasized neuropsychiatric disorder that needs heightened attention, especially with regard to its treatment and care. Moreover, the high synergistic potential of biomaterials and nanosystems in this area remains to be explored. Certain strategies that are already being utilized for wound healing can also be further exploited, particularly as far as the prevention of infections is concerned.

3D Printing of Bioinspired Biomaterials for Tissue Regeneration

Biological systems, which possess remarkable functions and excellent properties, are gradually becoming a source of inspiration for the fabrication of advanced tissue regeneration biomaterials due to their hierarchical structures and novel compositions. It would be meaningful to learn and transfer the characteristics of creatures to biomaterials design. However, traditional strategies cannot satisfy the design requirements of the complicated bioinspired materials for tissue regeneration. 3D printing, as a rapidly developing new technology that can accurately achieve multimaterial and multiscale fabrication, is capable of optimizing the fabrication of bioinspired materials with complex composition and structure. This review summarizes the recent developments in 3D-printed bioinspired biomaterials for multiple tissue regeneration, and especially highlights the progresses on i) traditional bioinspired designs for biomaterials fabrication, ii) biological composition inspired designs for the 3D-printed biomaterials, and iii) biological structure inspired designs for the 3D-printed biomaterials. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the development of 3D-printed bioinspired biomaterials are discussed.

Pyrene-Based Co-Assembled Supramolecular Gel; Morphology Changes and Macroscale Mechanical Property

Two pyrene derivatives having the perylenediimide (1) or the alky chain (2) in the middle of molecules were synthesized. Co-assembled supramolecular gels were prepared at different molar ratios of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 equiv. of 2 to 1. By SEM observation, the morphology of co-assembled supramolecular gels changed from spherical nanoparticles to three-dimensional network nanofibers as the ratio of 2 increased. In addition, the pyrene-excimer emission of co-assembled gels increased with increasing concentration of 2, and was stronger when compared with the condition without 1 or 2, indicating the formation of pyrene interaction between 1 and 2. In addition, the sol-gel transition was found to be reversible over repeated measurement by tube inversion method. The rheological properties of co-assembled supramolecular gels were also improved by increasing the ratio of 2, due to the increased nanoscale flexibility of supramolecular packing by introducing alkyl chain groups through heterogeneous pyrene interaction. These findings suggest that macroscale mechanical strength of co-assembled supramolecular gel was strongly influenced by nanoscale flexibility of the supramolecular packing.

Improvement of Sensing Properties for Copper Phthalocyanine Sensors Based on Polymer Nanofibers Scaffolds

An effectual and understandable route for the fabrication techniques of stereoscopic NO₂ sensor is provided in this work. As the gas-sensing layer of the sensor, copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) grew on the top of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers (NFs). The sensitivity of the CuPc/PVA NFs stereoscopic sensors to NO₂ was over 829%/ppm, while the sensitivity of the continuous CuPc films sensors was 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the stereoscopic ones. To the responsivities at 25 ppm of NO₂, the CuPc/PVA NFs stereoscopic sensors were about four times stronger than that of the continuous CuPc films sensors. For the recovery time, the CuPc/PVA NFs stereoscopic sensors were over eight times faster than the continuous CuPc films sensors. This general tactic can be used to prepare various toxic gas sensors to improve the overall performance of the devices.

Self-Derived Superhydrophobic and Multifunctional Polymer Sponge Composite with Excellent Joule Heating and Photothermal Performance for Strain/Pressure Sensors

Flexible strain or pressure sensors have potential applications in electronic skin, healthcare, etc. It remains a challenge to explore multifunctional strain or pressure sensors that possess excellent water repellent and heating performance and hence can be used in harsh environments such as high moisture and low-temperature conditions. Here, a self-derived superhydrophobic and multifunctional polymer composite foam is prepared by adsorption of the Ag precursor in tetrahydrofuran (THF) onto the rubber sponge followed by reduction of Ag⁺ to Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs). During the Ag⁺ reduction in hydrazine solution, the swollen rubber sponge by THF is partially precipitated based on the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS). The NIPS creates a porous structure on the sponge surface and thus a high surface roughness, contributing to the material superhydrophobicity. The precipitated polymer wrapping the AgNPs could enhance the interaction between the individual AgNPs. The obtained conductive sponge composite possesses excellent Joule heating and photothermal performance and can be used as both a strain and pressure sensor. The conductive sponge composite sensor possesses good reliability and durability and can be applied to real-time monitoring of human body movements.

Recent Advances in Microfluidic Platforms Applied in Cancer Metastasis: Circulating Tumor Cells' (CTCs) Isolation and Tumor-On-A-Chip

Cancer remains the leading cause of death worldwide despite the enormous efforts that are made in the development of cancer biology and anticancer therapeutic treatment. Furthermore, recent studies in oncology have focused on the complex cancer metastatic process as metastatic disease contributes to more than 90% of tumor-related death. In the metastatic process, isolation and analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) play a vital role in diagnosis and prognosis of cancer patients at an early stage. To obtain relevant information on cancer metastasis and progression from CTCs, reliable approaches are required for CTC detection and isolation. Additionally, experimental platforms mimicking the tumor microenvironment in vitro give a better understanding of the metastatic microenvironment and antimetastatic drugs' screening. With the advancement of microfabrication and rapid prototyping, microfluidic techniques are now increasingly being exploited to study cancer metastasis as they allow precise control of fluids in small volume and rapid sample processing at relatively low cost and with high sensitivity. Recent advancements in microfluidic platforms utilized in various methods for CTCs' isolation and tumor models recapitulating the metastatic microenvironment (tumor-on-a-chip) are comprehensively reviewed. Future perspectives on microfluidics for cancer metastasis are proposed.

Effect of Oral Administration of Active Peptides of Pinctada Martensii on the Repair of Skin Wounds

Skin wound healing, especially chronic wound healing, is a common challenging clinical problem. It is urgent to broaden the sources of bioactive substances that can safely and efficiently promote skin wound healing. This study aimed to observe the effects of active peptides (APs) of the mantle of Pinctada martensii on wound healing. After physicochemical analysis of amino acids and mass spectrometry of APs, the effect of APs on promoting healing was studied through a whole cortex wound model on the back of mice for 18 consecutive days. The results showed that APs consisted of polypeptides with molecular weights in the range 302.17–2936.43 Da. The content of polypeptides containing 2–15 amino acids accounted for 73.87%, and the hydrophobic amino acids accounted for 56.51%. Results of in vitro experimentation showed that mice in APs-L group which were fed a low dose of APs (0.5 g/kg bw) had a shortened epithelialization time due to a shortening inflammatory period (p < 0.05). Mechanistically, this relied on its specific ability to promote the proliferation of CD31, FGF and EGF which accelerated the percentage of wound closure. Moreover, the APs-L group mice had enhanced collagen synthesis and increased type III collagen content in their wounds through a TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway (p > 0.05). Consequently, scar formation was inhibited and wound healing efficiency was significantly improved. These results show that the APs of Pinctada martensii promote dermal wound healing in mice and have tremendous potential for development and utilization in skin wound healing.
