Nitrogen-Doped Graphene-Encapsulated Nickel-Copper Alloy Nanoflower for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Trifunctional electrocatalysts based on a bimetallic nanoalloy and nitrogen-doped carbon with brush-like heterostructure

Trifunctional ORR/OER/HER catalysts are emerging for various sustainable energy storage and conversion technologies. For this function, employing materials with 1D structures leads to catalysts having limited surface area and structural robustness. Instead of 1D catalysts, heterostructured catalysts (i.e., catalysts consisting of interfaces created by combining diverse structural components) have attracted much attention due to their high efficiency. We have fabricated a directly grown 1D-1D heterostructured bimetallic N-doped carbon trifunctional catalyst based on Fe/Co bimetallic-organic frameworks, forming nanobrushes (FeCoNC-NB) with improved resistance to collapsing and substantial numbers of exposed active sites. The secondary 1D structure of this design contributes to creating interparticle conductive networks. By combining the brush-like heterostructure, FeCo alloy active sites, and N-doped carbon as support and for encapsulation of the metal, the catalyst features a high ORR Eonset value (1.046 V), low OER overpotential (363 mV), and comparable HER overpotential (254 mV) in alkaline electrolyte. Zn-air batteries with FeCoNC-NB demonstrate a power density of 195 mW cm-2 and a superior battery life of up to 350 h. Self-powered FeCoNC-NB-based water electrolyzers as energy conversion devices are also demonstrated. This work drives the progress of trifunctional catalysts based on heterostructured nonprecious metal N-doped carbon for energy storage and conversion developments.

Metal Alloys-Structured Electrocatalysts: Metal-Metal Interactions, Coordination Microenvironments, and Structural Property-Reactivity Relationships

Metal alloys-structured electrocatalysts (MAECs) have made essential contributions to accelerating the practical applications of electrocatalytic devices in renewable energy systems. However, due to the complex atomic structures, varied electronic states, and abundant supports, precisely decoding the metal-metal interactions and structure-activity relationships of MAECs still confronts great challenges, which is critical to direct the future engineering and optimization of MAECs. Here, this timely review comprehensively summarizes the latest advances in creating the MAECs, including the metal-metal interactions, coordination microenvironments, and structure-activity relationships. First, the fundamental classification, design, characterization, and structural reconstruction of MAECs are outlined. Then, the electrocatalytic merits and modulation strategies of recent breakthroughs for noble and non-noble metal-structured MAECs are thoroughly discussed, such as solid solution alloys, intermetallic alloys, and single-atom alloys. Particularly, unique insights into the bond interactions, theoretical understanding, and operando techniques for mechanism disclosure are given. Thereafter, the current states of diverse MAECs with a unique focus on structural property-reactivity relationships, reaction pathways, and performance comparisons are discussed. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives for MAECs are systematically discussed. It is believed that this comprehensive review can offer a substantial impact on stimulating the widespread utilization of metal alloys-structured materials in electrocatalysis.

Spark plasma sintered catalytic nickel-copper alloy and carbon nanotube electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction

We report the proof-of-concept of spark plasma sintered (SPS) consolidated mesoporous composite catalytic electrodes based on nickel-copper alloys and carbon nanotubes for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. The optimized electrode (203 m2 g-1, 5 wt% Ni75Cu25) operated at -0.1 A cm-2 (current of -0.15 A) for 24 h with a stable overpotential of about 0.3 V. This newly described freestanding SPS approach allows the rational control of specific surface area, metal loading, and electrocatalytic performance, thus opening a new route to catalytic electrodes with controllable physical and catalytic properties.

Recent advances in nanoflowers: compositional and structural diversification for potential applications

In recent years, nanoscience and nanotechnology have emerged as promising fields in materials science. Spectroscopic techniques like scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy have revolutionized the characterization, manipulation, and size control of nanomaterials, enabling the creation of diverse materials such as fullerenes, graphene, nanotubes, nanofibers, nanorods, nanowires, nanoparticles, nanocones, and nanosheets. Among these nanomaterials, there has been considerable interest in flower-shaped hierarchical 3D nanostructures, known as nanoflowers. These structures offer advantages like a higher surface-to-volume ratio compared to spherical nanoparticles, cost-effectiveness, and environmentally friendly preparation methods. Researchers have explored various applications of 3D nanostructures with unique morphologies derived from different nanoflowers. The nanoflowers are classified as organic, inorganic and hybrid, and the hybrids are a combination thereof, and most research studies of the nanoflowers have been focused on biomedical applications. Intriguingly, among them, inorganic nanoflowers have been studied extensively in various areas, such as electro, photo, and chemical catalysis, sensors, supercapacitors, and batteries, owing to their high catalytic efficiency and optical characteristics, which arise from their composition, crystal structure, and local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Despite the significant interest in inorganic nanoflowers, comprehensive reviews on this topic have been scarce until now. This is the first review focusing on inorganic nanoflowers for applications in electro, photo, and chemical catalysts, sensors, supercapacitors, and batteries. Since the early 2000s, more than 350 papers have been published on this topic with many ongoing research projects. This review categorizes the reported inorganic nanoflowers into four groups based on their composition and structure: metal, metal oxide, alloy, and other nanoflowers, including silica, metal-metal oxide, core-shell, doped, coated, nitride, sulfide, phosphide, selenide, and telluride nanoflowers. The review thoroughly discusses the preparation methods, conditions for morphology and size control, mechanisms, characteristics, and potential applications of these nanoflowers, aiming to facilitate future research and promote highly effective and synergistic applications in various fields.

Ti3 C2 -modified g-C3 N4 /MoSe2 S-Scheme Heterojunction with Full-Spectrum Response for CO2 Photoreduction to CO and CH4

Energy shortage and global warming caused by the extensive use of fossil fuels are urgent problems to be solved at present. Photoreduction of CO2 is considered to be a feasible solution. The ternary composite catalyst g-C3 N4 /Ti3 C2 /MoSe2 was synthesized by hydrothermal method, and its physical and chemical properties were studied by an array of characterization and tests. In addition, the photocatalytic performance of this series of catalysts under full spectrum irradiation was also tested. It is found that the CTM-5 sample has the best photocatalytic activity, and the yields of CO and CH4 are 29.87 and 17.94 μmol g-1  h-1 , respectively. This can be ascribed to the favorable optical absorption performance of the composite catalyst in the full spectrum and the establishment of S-scheme charge transfer channel. The formation of heterojunctions can effectively promote charge transfer. The addition of Ti3 C2 materials provides plentiful active sites for CO2 reaction, and its superior electrical conductivity is also favorable for the migration of photogenerated electrons.

Progress in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution of transition metal alloys: synthesis, structure, and mechanism analysis

At present, the problems of high energy consumption and low efficiency in electrocatalytic hydrogen production have limited the large-scale industrial application of this technology. Constructing effective catalysts has become the way to solve these problems. Transition metal alloys have been proved to be very promising materials in hydrogen evaluation reaction (HER). In this study, the related theories and characterization methods of electrocatalysis are summarized, and the latest progress in the application of binary, ternary, and high entropy alloys to HER in recent years is analyzed and studied. The synthesis methods and optimization strategies of transition metal alloys, including composition regulation, hybrid engineering, phase engineering, and morphological engineering were emphatically discussed, and the principles and performance mechanism analysis of these strategies were discussed in detail. Although great progress has been made in alloy catalysts, there is still considerable room for applications. Finally, the challenges, prospects, and research directions of transition metal alloys in the future were predicted.

Surface-Dependent Hydrogen Evolution Activity of Copper Foil

Single-crystal planes are ideal platforms for catalytic research. In this work, rolled copper foils with predominantly (220) planes were used as the starting material. By using temperature gradient annealing, which caused grain recrystallization in the foils, they were transformed to those with (200) planes. In acidic solution, the overpotential of such a foil (10 mA cm^-2) was found to be 136 mV lower than that of a similar rolled copper foil. The calculation results show that hollow sites formed on the (200) plane have the highest hydrogen adsorption energy and are active centers for hydrogen evolution. Thus, this work clarifies the catalytic activity of specific sites on the copper surface and demonstrates the critical role of surface engineering in designing catalytic properties.

Photoassisted Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction of MFe2O4@Ultrathin Black Phosphorus Amorphous-Crystalline Interface

Exploring highly active, stable, and low-cost catalysts for photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (PE-HER) is vital in the field of energy conversion. Herein, we construct a new amorphous crystalline interface that amorphous iron-based spinel oxide (A-MFe₂O₄ (M = Ni, Co, Zn)) is uniformly anchored on the crystalline exfoliated black phosphorus (C-EBP) nanosheets via electrochemical and solvothermal strategies. Among these A-MFe₂O₄@C-EBP catalysts, more oxygen defects of A-NiFe₂O₄@C-EBP interface provide a larger effective electrochemical active area of 32.33 mF cm^-2 as well as a turnover frequency of 0.44 s^-1 and allow for an optimum equilibrium of the hydrogen-containing adsorption intermediates. Furthermore, A-NiFe₂O₄@C-EBP exhibits significant PE-HER performance with an overpotential of 42 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 under visible-light irradiation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the amorphous-crystalline composite structure causes a large number of oxygen defects enhancing the intrinsic activity of A-NiFe₂O₄@C-EBP, which A-NiFe₂O₄@C-EBP significantly improves its adsorption capacity for H* for HER and has the lowest Gibbs free energy change for HER. This study not only provides a superior multifunctional amorphous-crystalline interface catalysts but also helps to understand the catalytic mechanism of PE-HER.

Noble-Metal-Free Doped Carbon Nanomaterial Electrocatalysts

Electrocatalytic processes, such as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂ RR), play key roles in various sustainable energy storage and production devices and their optimization in an ecological manner is of paramount importance for mankind. In this inclusive Review, we aspire to set the scene on doped carbon-based nanomaterials and their hybrids as precious-metal alternative electrocatalysts for these critical reactions in order for the research community not only to stay up-to-date, but also to get inspired and keep pushing forward towards their practical application in energy conversion.

Metal–organic framework derived nitrogen-doped carbon-RhNi alloys anchored on graphene for highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

A C-N Coupling Polymerization on Ice-Surface towards Decimeter-Sized 2D Covalent Materials with High Catalytic Activity for Water-Splitting

Compared to other solid templates (metal, ceramic, carbon, etc.), polymerization on ice-surface has many advantages. However, the popularity of this method has been impeded by the lack of appropriate polymerization reactions. To date, only few oxidation polymerizations have been reported to occur on ice-surface, and unfortunately they can only produce supramolecular films rather than fully covalent films. Herein for the first time, 2D covalent materials have been created on ice-surface even at -16 °C through a C-N coupling polymerization, and two free-standing 2D polyarylamines (2DPA)s were synthesized. Both 2DPAs have decimeter-size and nanometer thickness. This study provides the first polymerization reaction to synthesize 2D covalent materials on ice-surface, which can be used to fabricate materials/tools/robots with specific 2D structure by copying ice morphologies. Furthermore, both 2DPAs exhibit higher hydrogen evolution reaction activity than many metal-free catalysts and even some metal-based catalysts, so this study also provides further insight for the development of metal-free catalysts for water-splitting.
