Imparting Superhydrophobicity with a Hierarchical Block Copolymer Coating

Fast-Crosslinking Enabled Self-Roughed Polydimethylsiloxane Transparent Superhydrophobic Coating and Its Application in Anti-Liquid-Interference Electrothermal Device

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based transparent and superhydrophobic coatings have important applications, such as anti-icing, corrosion resistance, self-cleaning, etc. However, their applications are limited by the inevitable introduction of nanoparticles/high-temperature/segmented PDMS to facilitate a raspy surface. In this study, a self-roughed, neat PDMS superhydrophobic coating with high transparency is developed via a one-step spray-coating technique. PDMS suspensions with various droplet sizes are synthesized and used as building blocks for raspy surface formation by controlled curing on the warm substrate. The optimal coating exhibits a large water contact angle of 155.4° and transparency (T550 = 82.3%). Meanwhile, the employed spray-coating technique is applicable to modify a plethora of substrates. For proof-of-concept demonstrations, the use of the PDMS hydrophobic coating for anti-liquid-interference electrothermal devices and further transparent observation window for long-term operation in a sub-zero environment is shown successful. The proposed facile synthesis method of hydrophobic PDMS coating is expected to have great potential for a broad range of applications in the large-scale fabrication of fluorine-free, eco-friendly superhydrophobic surfaces.

Interfacial energy as an approach to designing amphipathic surfaces during photopolymerization curing

Photopolymerization induced phase separation (PIPS) is a platform capable of creating heterogeneous materials from initially miscible resin solutions, where both the reaction's governing thermodynamics and kinetics significantly influence the resulting phase composition and morphology. Here, PIPS is used to develop materials in a single photopolymerization step that are hydrophobic on one face and hydrophilic on the other. These two faces possess a water contact angle difference of 50°, bridged by a bulk-scale chemical gradient. The impact of the PIPS-triggering inert additive is investigated by increasing the loading of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in an acrylonitrile/1,6-hexanediol diacrylate comonomer resin. The extent of phase separation in the sample network depends on this loading, with increasing PMMA corresponding to macroscale domains that are more chemically and mechanically distinct. A significant period between the onsets of phase separation and reaction deceleration, determined using in situ FT-IR, facilitates this enhanced phase segregation in PMMA-modified samples. Spatially directed domain formation can be further promoted using multiple interface types in the sample mold, here, glass and stainless steel. With multiple interface types, interfacial rearrangements to minimize surface energy during resin photopolymerization result in a hydrophobic face that is nitrile-rich and a hydrophilic face that is nitrile-poor (e.g., acrylate-rich). Using this strategy, patterned wettability on a single face can also be engineered. This study illustrates the capabilities of PIPS for complex surface design and in applications requiring stark differences in surface character without sharp interfaces.

Designing Non-Fluorinated Superhydrophobic Fabrics with Durable Stability and Photocatalytic Functionality

The ability of a superhydrophobic fabric to stay dry and clean has aroused great interest in daily life. Especially, the development of an eco-friendly non-fluorinated water-repellent textile has become a hot topic in recent years. We present a green strategy to achieve self-cleaning textile by in situ deposition of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles on cotton with subsequent polydimethylsiloxane modification. The prepared cotton fabric exhibits superior water repellency with a water contact angle of 157°. Meanwhile, this superhydrophobic surface can easily be ruined by oil contaminants and then exhibit a decreased water contact angle of 0°. However, the oil-contaminated surface can recover its water repellency after being irradiated. After six cycles of contamination using oleic acid and successive photodegradation, the fabric surface remains superhydrophobic. The obtained superhydrophobic surface does not adversely affect the fabric's strength and air permeability. Therefore, the developed superhydrophobic cotton fabrics have the potential to be used in a variety of industrial scenarios and in daily life.

Emergence of layered nanoscale mesh networks through intrinsic molecular confinement self-assembly

Block copolymer self-assembly is a powerful tool for two-dimensional nanofabrication; however, the extension of this self-assembly concept to complex three-dimensional network structures is limited. Here we report a simple method to experimentally generate three-dimensional layered mesh morphologies through intrinsic molecular confinement self-assembly. We designed triblock bottlebrush polymers with two Janus domains: one perpendicular and one parallel to the polymer backbone. The former enforces a lamellar superstructure that intrinsically confines the intralayer self-assembly of the latter, giving rise to a mesh-like monoclinic (54°) M¹⁵ network substructure with excellent long-range order, as well as a tetragonal (90°) T¹³¹ mesh. Numerical simulations show that the spatial constraints exerted on the polymer backbone drive the assembly of M¹⁵ and yield T¹³¹ in the strong segregation regime. This work demonstrates that intrinsic molecular confinement is a viable path to bottom-up assembly of new geometrical phases of soft matter, extending the capabilities of block copolymer nanofabrication.

Competitive Registration Fields for The Development of Complex Block Copolymer Structures by A Layer-by-Layer Approach

Block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly in thin films is an elegant method to generate nanometric features with tunable geometrical configurations. By combining directed assembly and hybridization methods, advances in nano-manufacturing have been attested over the past decades with flagship applications in lithography and optics. Nevertheless, the range of geometrical configurations is limited by the accessible morphologies inherent to the energy minimization process involved in BCP self-assembly. Layering of nanostructured BCP thin films has been recently proposed in order to enrich the span of nanostructures derived from BCP self-assembly with the formation of non-native heterostructures such as double-layered arrays of nanowires or dots-on-line and dots-in-hole hierarchical structures. In this work, the layer-by-layer method is further exploited for the generation of nano-mesh arrays using nanostructured BCP thin films. In particular, a subtle combination of chemical and topographical fields is leveraged in order to demonstrate design rules for the controlled registration of a BCP layer on top of an underneath immobilized one by the precise tuning of the interfacial chemical field between the two BCP layers.

Solvent-assisted self-assembly of block copolymer thin films

Solvent-assisted block copolymer self-assembly is a compelling method for processing and advancing practical applications of these materials due to the exceptional level of the control of BCP morphology and significant acceleration of ordering kinetics. Despite substantial experimental and theoretical efforts devoted to understanding of solvent-assisted BCP film ordering, the development of a universal BCP patterning protocol remains elusive; possibly due to a multitude of factors which dictate the self-assembly scenario. The aim of this review is to aggregate both seminal reports and the latest progress in solvent-assisted directed self-assembly and to provide the reader with theoretical background, including the outline of BCP ordering thermodynamics and kinetics phenomena. We also indicate significant BCP research areas and emerging high-tech applications where solvent-assisted processing might play a dominant role.

Block Copolymer Nanopatterning for Nonsemiconductor Device Applications

Block copolymer (BCP) nanopatterning has emerged as a versatile nanoscale fabrication tool for semiconductor devices and other applications, because of its ability to organize well-defined, periodic nanostructures with a critical dimension of 5-100 nm. While the most promising application field of BCP nanopatterning has been semiconductor devices, the versatility of BCPs has also led to enormous interest from a broad spectrum of other application areas. In particular, the intrinsically low cost and straightforward processing of BCP nanopatterning have been widely recognized for their large-area parallel formation of dense nanoscale features, which clearly contrasts that of sophisticated processing steps of the typical photolithographic process, including EUV lithography. In this Review, we highlight the recent progress in the field of BCP nanopatterning for various nonsemiconductor applications. Notable examples relying on BCP nanopatterning, including nanocatalysts, sensors, optics, energy devices, membranes, surface modifications and other emerging applications, are summarized. We further discuss the current limitations of BCP nanopatterning and suggest future research directions to open up new potential application fields.

Preparation of Transparent Sandwich-like Superhydrophobic Coating on Glass with High Stability and Self-Cleaning Properties

High stability and transparent superhydrophobic coating on a glass substrate that can effectively repel the wetting dust as a self-cleaning property are beneficial traits for solving the decrease in optical lens clarity in an unmanned underground mining environment. However, the transparent superhydrophobic coating has still not been applied due to the contradiction between visibility, hydrophobicity and durability. Herein, a sandwich-like superhydrophobic coating was designed and prepared on borosilicate glass, which consisted of a micro/nanostructure body of neutral silicone sealant (primer) and hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (interlayer), as well as a protective layer of ultraviolet (UV) gel. The coated glass exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity towards many aqueous solutions, and had highly visible light transparency of 80% at 4 wt.% primer mass content. Furthermore, significant tests including the droplet impact, hot water boiling, stirring in acetic acid aqueous solution and sandpaper abrasion were performed on our superhydrophobic coating, which indicated that the obtained transparent coating had good stability and excellent mechanical durability. The coated glass also showed a more wonderful self-cleaning property compared with that of the original glass. This superhydrophobic coating on glass substrate, fabricated by a facile and cost-effective layer-by-layer construction approach, has great potential for general and practical application in the unmanned mining environment under multiple dust and atomized water conditions.

Metallic Nanomeshes Fabricated by Multimechanism Directed Self-Assembly

The directed self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) is a powerful motif for the continued scaling of feature sizes for nanoscale devices. A multimechanism directed self-assembly (MMDSA) method is described that generates orthogonal meshes from a polystyrene-b-poly-2-vinylpyridine BCP that is subsequently metallized with Pt. The MMDSA process takes advantage of three different mechanisms, trench wall guidance, edge nucleation, and underlayer guidance, to align the mesh with respect to substrate features. The mechanisms and their interactions are investigated via both experiments and dissipative particle dynamics simulations. MMDSA is applied to produce well-aligned conductive nanomeshes and then is extended to fabricate multicomponent metallic structures with 2D/3D hybrid morphologies.

Tailoring Materials with Specific Wettability in Biomedical Engineering

As a fundamental feature of solid surfaces, wettability is playing an increasingly important role in our daily life. Benefitting from the inspiration of biological paradigms and the development in manufacturing technology, numerous wettability materials with elaborately designed surface topology and chemical compositions have been fabricated. Based on these advances, wettability materials have found broad technological implications in various fields ranging from academy, industry, agriculture to biomedical engineering. Among them, the practical applications of wettability materials in biomedical-related fields are receiving remarkable researches during the past decades because of the increasing attention to healthcare. In this review, the research progress of materials with specific wettability is discussed. After briefly introducing the underlying mechanisms, the fabrication strategies of artificial materials with specific wettability are described. The emphasis is put on the application progress of wettability biomaterials in biomedical engineering. The prospects for the future trend of wettability materials are also presented.

Directionally Guided Droplets on a Modular Bottom-Up Anisotropic Locally Ordered Nickel Nanocone Superhydrophobic Surface

The anisotropic surface prepared by the top-down etching technology shows unique advantages in terms of functional superhydrophobicity. However, it still has a shackle of the smallest etching size, which largely restricts the development of better superhydrophobicity. Therefore, it is still a huge challenge to realize the stepless size adjustment of an anisotropic surface in order to achieve better functionalization. In this work, a bottom-up approach inspired via the modular segmented preparation technology has been used to successfully build an anisotropic, locally ordered functionalized unique superhydrophobic structure, whose contact and rebound time of water droplets is extremely short. Furthermore, this structure with artfully arranged "tracks", which has a relatively large contact angle value, not only lasts more than 15 consecutive bounce cycles in the same direction, where the droplets after merging still bounce, but also exhibits a significant anisotropic sliding behavior, which is presented in different sliding angles, toward droplets rolling in different directions and has lower adhesion work and better self-cleaning and anti-fouling performance. Besides, some mechanisms such as the reduction-replacement-reduction cycle and repulsion-adhesion-switching have been proposed especially in modular preparation and anisotropic sliding behavior. More importantly, this sorted bottom-up structure has great potential for achieving higher efficiency of functionalized superhydrophobicity and other related applications.

The Effect of Fiber Type and Yarn Diameter on Superhydrophobicity, Self-Cleaning Property, and Water Spray Resistance

In this study, we proved that micro/micro hierarchical structures are enough to achieve a superhydrophobic surface using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dip-coating. Furthermore, the effect of fiber type and yarn diameter on superhydrophobicity and water spray resistance was investigated. Polyester fabrics with two types of fibers (staple fabric and filament) and three types of yarn diameters (177D, 314D, and 475D) were used. The changes in the surface properties and chemical composition were investigated. Static contact angles and shedding angles were measured for superhydrophobicity, and the self-cleaning test was conducted. Water spray repellency was also tested, as well as the water vapor transmission rate and air permeability. The PDMS-coated staple fabric showed better superhydrophobicity and oleophobicity than the PDMS-coated filament fabric, while the filament fabric showed good self-cleaning property and higher water spray repellency level. When the yarn diameter increased, the fabrics needed higher PDMS concentrations and longer coating durations for uniform coating. The water vapor transmission rate and air permeability did not change significantly after coating. Therefore, the superhydrophobic micro/micro hierarchical fabrics produced using the simple method of this study are more practical and have great potential for mass production than other superhydrophobic textiles prepared using the chemical methods.

Effect of Molecular Architecture on the Self-Assembly of Bottlebrush Copolymers

The characteristics of a new architecture of bottlebrush copolymers (BBCPs) self-assembly were studied using self-consistent field theory. In this molecule, a series of AB linear diblock side chains were connected at the diblock junction using a C backbone. The control over the linker length and its chemical nature created an additional constraint on the intrinsic AB diblock microphase separation. Increasing side-chain crowding by increasing the grafting density and total degree of polymerization induced improved phase separation. This was reflected in the overall reduction in the effective interaction parameter between the diblocks as well as the abrupt increase in phase density when crossing the order-disorder transition. Side-chain crowding resulted in an increase in the equilibrium domain spacing compared to a linear diblock. On the other hand, the localization of block C at the AB interface generated a diffuse domain boundary and reduction in side-chain stretching. The unique behavior of BBCPs was observed in 1D confined systems where the molecule showed the natural tendency to orient domains parallel to neutral confinement in contrast to the behavior of confined diblocks. Such behavior largely depended on the degree of incompatibility between the AB blocks and BBCP structure. A ternary phase diagram was constructed for different proportions of each block. Rich morphologies of core-shell domains and tiling patterns were observed including octagonal and pentagonal polygons. The unique architecture of this bottlebrush molecule and its improved nanoscale properties make it an attractive candidate for various applications of nanotechnology.
