Exploring suitability of solid 3D substrates for designing self-supported electrocatalysts for water splitting

The choice of solid 3D substrates to design electrocatalysts significantly impacts the efficiency and effectiveness of self-supported electrocatalysts used in water splitting. These substrates are pivotal in significantly boosting the performance by providing structural support, facilitating electron transport, and increasing the active surface area. This improvement leads to higher catalytic performance and better stability, ultimately optimizing the electrocatalytic process. The interaction between the substrate and the electrocatalyst can also affect the intrinsic properties of the catalyst, further influencing its performance. Therefore, understanding and optimizing the use of solid 3D substrates is vital for advancing water-splitting technologies. This article explores the critical role of solid 3D substrates in enhancing the activity of self-supported materials for water splitting. By examining recent developments and research in this region, we target to showcase a comprehensive understanding of how different 3D substrates influence electrocatalyst properties and performance and to highlight future directions for optimizing these systems in water-splitting applications.

Accelerating electrosynthesis of ammonia from nitrates using coupled NiO/Cu nanocomposites

Herein, we report a nanocomposite electrocatalyst with coupled Cu and NiO, showing a high Faraday efficiency of 97% and excellent ammonia production rate (450 mg h-1 cm-2) for nitrate reduction. In situ UV-vis spectroscopic studies confirmed that the synergy between NiO and Cu could avoid NO2- enrichment and promote tandem nitrate reduction to ammonia synthesis.

Layered Quasi-Nevskite Metastable-Phase Cobalt Oxide Accelerates Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Reaction Kinetics

Clarifying the structure-reactivity relationship of non-noble-metal electrocatalysts is one of the decisive factors for the practical application of water electrolysis. In this field, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a sluggish kinetic process has become a huge challenge for large-scale production of high-purity hydrogen. Here we synthesize a layered quasi-nevskite metastable-phase cobalt oxide (LQNMP-Co2O3) nanosheet via a simple molten alkali synthesis strategy. The unit-cell parameters of LQNMP-Co2O3 are determined to be a = b = 2.81 Å and c = 6.89 Å with a space group of P3̅m1 (No. 164). The electrochemical results show that the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst enables delivering an ultralow overpotential of 266 mV at a current density of 10 mA cmgeo-2 with excellent durability. The operando XANES and EXAFS analyses clearly reveal the origin of the OER activity and the electrochemical stability of the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) (from *O to *OOH) is significantly reduced on the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst by comparing with simulated monolayered CoO2 (M-CoO2).

Enhancing the electrocatalytic activities of metal organic frameworks for the oxygen evolution reaction with bimetallic groups

Controlling the ratio of metals in bimetallic organic frameworks (MOFs) can not only alter the structures but also tailor the properties of MOFs. Herein, we report a series of electrocatalytically active CoxNiy-based bimetallic MOFs that are synthesized with the 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (3,5-H2pdc) ligand (where x : y = 20 : 1, 15 : 1, 10 : 1, 5 : 1, 1 : 1, and 1 : 20) and a facile, scalable, low temperature synthetic route. The materials have one-dimensional (1D), rod-like microstructures with different aspect ratios. While they all electrocatalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution (1 M KOH), their electrocatalytic performances vary substantially depending on their compositions. The CoxNiy-MOF with an optimal ratio of x : y = 15 : 1 (Co15Ni1-MOF) electrocatalyzes the OER with the highest maximum current density (92.2 mA cm-2 at 1.75 V vs. RHE) and the smallest overpotential (384 mV vs. RHE at 10 mA cm-2) in a 1 M KOH solution. It is also stable under constant current application during the electrocatalytic OER. This work demonstrates the application of bimetallic MOFs that are synthesized following a simple, low temperature synthetic route for the OER and their tailorable electrocatalytic properties for the OER by varying the ratio of two metals and the synthetic conditions used to produce them.

Spray-Flame Synthesis of LaFexCo1-xO3 (x = 0.2, 0.3) Perovskite Nanoparticles for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Water Splitting: Effect of Precursor Chemistry (Acetates and Nitrates)

The product properties of mixed oxide nanoparticles generated via spray-flame synthesis depend on an intricate interplay of solvent and precursor chemistries in the processed solution. The effect of two different sets of metal precursors, acetates and nitrates, dissolved in a mixture of ethanol (35 Vol.%) and 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA, 65 Vol.%) was investigated for the synthesis of LaFe_xCo_1-xO₃ (x = 0.2, 0.3) perovskites. Regardless of the set of precursors, similar particle-size distributions (d_p = 8-11 nm) were obtained and a few particles with sizes above 20 nm were identified with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. Using acetates as precursors, inhomogeneous La, Fe, and Co elemental distributions were obtained for all particle sizes according to energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mappings, connected to the formation of multiple secondary phases such as oxygen-deficient La₃(Fe_xCo_1-x)₃O₈ brownmillerite or La₄(Fe_xCo_1-x)₃O₁₀ Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) structures besides the main trigonal perovskite phase. For samples synthesized from nitrates, inhomogeneous elemental distributions were observed for large particles only where La and Fe enrichment occurred in combination with the formation of a secondary La₂(Fe_xCo_1-x)O₄ RP phase. Such variations can be attributed to reactions in the solution prior to injection in the flame as well as precursor-dependent variations in in-flame reactions. Therefore, the precursor solutions were analyzed by temperature-dependent attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) measurements. The acetate-based precursor solutions indicated the partial conversion of, mainly La and Fe, acetates to metal 2-ethylhexanoates. In the nitrate-based solutions, esterification of ethanol and 2-EHA played the most important role. The synthesized nanoparticle samples were characterized by BET (Brunauer, Emmett, Teller), FTIR, Mössbauer, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All samples were tested as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, and similar electrocatalytic activities were recorded when evaluating the potential required to reach 10 mA/cm² current density (∼1.61 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)).

Molybdenum-iron-cobalt oxyhydroxide with rich oxygen vacancies for the oxygen evolution reaction

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) restrains the development of water splitting technologies and the efficiency of producing sustainable resources. To this end, the introduction of iron and molybdenum in catalytic systems has been employed as a crucial strategy for the enhancement of catalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the relationship between catalyst components and catalytic performance is still evasive. In this study, by doping iron and molybdenum into cobalt hydroxide via a cation-exchange method, rich oxygen vacancies and active metal centers are introduced to the trimetallic oxyhydroxide, endowing the catalyst with a low overpotential of 223 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, a low Tafel slope of 43.6 mV dec^-1, and a long stable operation time (>50 h) in alkaline media, comparable to the current best OER catalyst. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the doping of iron favors the generation of oxygen vacancies. It is also found in this work that using a certain amount (5 mg) of iron dopant can alter the electronic structure of the catalyst by tuning the electronic density around the metal ions, thus optimizing the binding energy of intermediates. The present work unveils the doping effect of iron and molybdenum on the construction of trimetallic oxyhydroxide catalysts, and sheds light on the relationship between the catalyst components and catalytic performance of the OER.

Amyloid Fibril Templated MOF Aerogels for Water Purification

Design and fabrication of versatile adsorbents for universal water purification following green chemistry principles remain challenging. Here, it is shown that amyloid fibrils from protein waste can be used as a functional scaffold for metal organic framework (MOF) biomimetic mineralization. The resulting amyloid fibrils/ZIF-8 hybrid aerogels can effectively remove nine different heavy metal ions from water due to their hierarchical porous structure. Importantly, amyloid fibrils/ZIF-8 hybrid aerogels can efficiently remove Hg²⁺ and Pb²⁺ from water over five consecutive adsorption-regeneration cycles. Furthermore, a dual removal pathway of adsorption and catalytic degradation is observed in the synthetic dyes, indicating that the aerogel preserves its porous nature and maintains the integrity of versatile functional ligands within ZIF-8. Finally, it is shown that these hybrid aerogels can also perform successfully in oil-water separation. Considering the facile synthesis procedure, high removal efficiency, affordable cost, and regeneration possibilities, the amyloid fibrils/ZIF-8 hybrid aerogel stands as an ideal candidate for addressing open challenges in wastewater treatment and water purification.

Coupled porosity and heterojunction engineering: MOF-derived porous Co3O4 embedded on TiO2 nanotube arrays for water remediation

Strive to develop the interaction and efficient co-catalysts is one of the vital projects in realizing hybrid photocatalytic systems for water remediation. In this work, p-type porous Co₃O₄ was embedded onto n-type vertical TiO₂ nanotube via an in-situ thermal etching method. ZIF-67 was employed as the structural template for Co₃O₄, which then augmented the light harvesting ability of the resultant photocatalyst. Such improvement was prompted by the light reflecting and directing attributes of porous Co₃O₄. Therefore, a remarkable MB removal rate was attained under sunlight irradiation, with superoxide radical being identified as the major reactive species. Photoelectric properties evaluation also verified that the p-n heterojunction developed herein exhibits outstanding charges separation ability with low impedance, particularly under light irradiation. This work highlights the idea on coupling both porous and p-n heterojunction engineering in augmenting photoactivity of catalyst, while offering insights in such structure-mediating approach.

Mechanically Reinforced Localized Structure Design to Stabilize Solid-Electrolyte Interface of the Composited Electrode of Si Nanoparticles and TiO2 Nanotubes

Silicon anode with extremely high theoretical specific capacity (≈4200 mAh g^-1 ), experiences huge volume changes during Li-ion insertion and extraction, causing mechanical fracture of Si particles and the growth of a solid-electrolyte interface (SEI), which results in a rapid capacity fading of Si electrodes. Herein, a mechanically reinforced localized structure is designed for carbon-coated Si nanoparticles (C@Si) via elongated TiO₂ nanotubes networks toward stabilizing Si electrode via alleviating mechanical strain and stabilizing the SEI layer. Benefited from the rational localized structure design, the carbon-coated Si nanoparticles/TiO₂ nanotubes composited electrode (C@Si/TiNT) exhibits an ideal electrode thickness swelling, which is lower than 1% after the first cycle and increases to about 6.6% even after 1600 cycles. While for traditional C@Si/carbon nanotube composited electrode, the initial swelling ratio is about 16.7% and reaches ≈190% after 1600 cycles. As a result, the C@Si/TiNT electrode exhibits an outstanding capacity of 1510 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 with high rate capability and long-time cycling performance with 95% capacity retention after 1600 cycles. The rational design on mechanically reinforced localized structure for silicon electrode will provide a versatile platform to solve the current bottlenecks for other alloyed-type electrode materials with large volume expansion toward practical applications.

Building High Power Density of Sodium-Ion Batteries: Importance of Multidimensional Diffusion Pathways in Cathode Materials

Emerging sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) devices hold the promise to leapfrog over existing lithium-ion batteries technologies with respect to desirable power/energy densities and the abundant sodium sources on the earth. To this end, the discoveries on novel cathode materials with outstanding rate capabilities are being given high priority in the quest to achieve high power density SIBs devices, and the multi-dimensional Na⁺ migration pathways with low diffusion energy barriers are crucial. In light of this, the recent development of Prussian blue analogs and sodium superionic conductor (NASICON)-type materials with 3D Na⁺ diffusion pathways for building high power density NIBs are provided in this perspective. Ultimately, the future research directions to realize them for real applications are also discussed.
