Direct Synthesis of Ultrathin Pt Nanowire Arrays as Catalysts for Methanol Oxidation

Diverse Hierarchical Meso/Nanoporous Pt Film Electrocatalysts Prepared via Hydrogen Adsorption-Assisted Dynamic Soft Templating

In this study, we present an innovative approach for creating hierarchical meso/nanoporous Pt films using dynamic soft templating. The fabrication process, called dynamic soft templating, involves Pt electrodeposition within a specialized bicontinuous microemulsion (BME) system characterized by a sophisticated three-dimensional network comprising water and oil phases, surfactants, and cosurfactants. Pt electrodeposition exclusively occurs in the water phase of the BME. This results in a porous Pt film exhibiting a nanostructure mirroring the oil solution/water solution nanostructure (solution/solution structure) of the BME, the size of which can be tailored by adjusting the BME composition. Through a simultaneous interplay of Pt electrodeposition and overpotential deposition of hydrogen (H-OPD, dissociative adsorption of water), potential-dependent Pt mesostructures are dynamically shaped. As a result, we achieve diverse morphologies in the form of hierarchical meso/nanoporous Pt films. The potential applications of the films are evaluated as electrocatalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), and it was found that the electrocatalytic performances seem to be sensitive to nanoporosity and not relevant to mesoporosity.

Ultra-Large Two-Dimensional Metal Nanowire Networks by Microfluidic Laminar Flow Synthesis for Formic Acid Electrooxidation

Despite the great research interest in two-dimensional metal nanowire networks (2D MNWNs) due to their large specific surface area and abundance of unsaturated coordination atoms, their controllable synthesis still remains a significant challenge. Herein, a microfluidics laminar flow-based approach is developed, enabling the facile preparation of large-scale 2D structures with diverse alloy compositions, such as PtBi, AuBi, PdBi, PtPdBi, and PtAuCu alloys. Remarkably, these 2D MNWNs can reach sizes up to submillimeter scale (~220 μm), which is significantly larger than the evolution from the 1D or 3D counterparts that typically measure only tens of nanometers. The PdBi 2D MNWNs affords the highest specific activity for formic acid (2669.1 mA mg-1) among current unsupported catalysts, which is 103.5 times higher than Pt-black, respectively. Furthermore, in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) experiments provide comprehensive evidence that PdBi 2D MNWNs catalysts can effectively prevent CO* poisoning, resulting in exceptional activity and stability for the oxidation of formic acid.

Self-brushing for nanopatterning: achieving perpendicular domain orientation in block copolymer thin films

The self-assembly of thin films of block copolymers (BCPs) with perpendicular domain orientation offers a promising approach for nanopatterning on a variety of substrates, which is required by advanced applications such as ultrasmall transistors in integrated circuits, nanopatterned materials for tissue engineering, and electrocatalysts for fuel cell applications. In this study, we created BCPs with an A-b-(B-r-C) architecture that have blocks with equal surface energy (γair) and that can bind to the substrate, effectively creating a non-preferential substrate coating via self-brushing that enables the formation of through-film perpendicular domains in thin films of BCPs. We employed a thiol-epoxy click reaction to functionalize polystyrene-block-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) with a pair of thiols to generate an A-b-(B-r-C) BCP and tune γair of the B-r-C block. The secondary hydroxyl and thiol ether functionality generated by the click reaction was utilized to bind the BCP to the substrates. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that perpendicular orientation was achieved by simply annealing a thin film of the BCP on the bare substrate without the usual extra step of coating a random copolymer brush on the substrate. The self-brushing capability of the BCP was also examined on gold, platinum, titanium, aluminum nitride, and silicon nitride surfaces. These results demonstrate that self-brushing is a promising approach for achieving perpendicular domain orientation in thin films of BCP for nanopatterning on a variety of useful surfaces.

PEDOT-embellished Ti3C2Tx nanosheet supported Pt-Pd bimetallic nanoparticles as efficient and stable methanol oxidation electrocatalysts

Exploiting high-efficiency and durable electrocatalysts toward the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is crucial for the advancement of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Herein, we demonstrate the loading of platinum-palladium bimetallic nanoparticles (Pt-Pd NPs) onto poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-embellished titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets as the electrocatalyst (Ti3C2Tx/PEDOT/Pt-Pd) via a facile and rapid chemical reduction-assisted one-pot hydrothermal process. The structural and morphological analyses of Ti3C2Tx/PEDOT/Pt-Pd indicate that the three-dimensional (3D) hybrid structure formed between PEDOT and Ti3C2Tx provides a sizable active surface and more active sites, which enhances the homogeneous dispersion of the Pt-Pd NPs and facilitates mass transfer. The Schottky junctions formed between PEDOT and Pt-Pd NPs contribute to charge transfer. The electronic effects and synergistic interactions between the support and catalyst favor the electrocatalytic activity of the catalyst. The electrochemical test results reveal that the Ti3C2Tx/PEDOT/Pt-Pd catalyst has prominent electrocatalytic capability for the MOR. Compared with Ti3C2Tx/Pt-Pd and commercial Pt/C catalysts, the Ti3C2Tx/PEDOT/Pt-Pd catalyst has a larger electrochemical activity surface area (ECSA = 122 m2 g-1) and higher mass activity (MA = 1445.4 mA mg-1), as well as better CO tolerance and more reliable long-term durability (a peak current density retention of 71% after 5200 s).

Strong Ligand Control for Noble Metal Nanostructures

ConspectusNanosynthesis is the art of creating nanostructures, with on-demand synthesis as the ultimate goal. Noble metal nanoparticles have wide applications, but the available synthetic methods are still limited, often giving nanospheres and symmetrical nanocrystals. The fundamental reason is that the conventional weak ligands are too labile to influence the materials deposition, so the equivalent facets always grow equivalently. Considering that the ligands are the main synthetic handles in colloidal synthesis, our group has been exploring strong ligands for new growth modes, giving a variety of sophisticated nanostructures. The model studies often involve metal deposition on seeds functionalized with a certain strong ligand, so that the uneven distribution of the surface ligands could guide the subsequent deposition.In this Account, we focus on the design principles underlying the new growth modes, summarizing our efforts in this area along with relevant literature works. The basics of ligand control are first revisited. Then, the four major growth modes are summarized as follows: (1) The curvature effects would divert the materials deposition away from the high-curvature tips when the ligands are insufficient. With ligands fully covering the seeds, the sparser ligand packing at the tips would then promote the initial nucleation thereon. (2) The strong ligands may get trapped under the incoming metal layer, thus modulating the interfacial energy of the core-shell interface. The evidence for embedded ligands is discussed, along with examples of Janus nanostructures arising from the synthetic control, including metal-metal, metal-semiconductor, and metal-C₆₀ systems using a variety of ligands. (3) Active surface growth is an unusual mode with divergent growth rates, so that part of the emerging surface is inhibited, and the growth is focused onto a few active sites. With seeds attached to oxide substrates, the selective deposition at the metal-substrate interface produces ultrathin nanowires. The synthesis can be generally applied to grow Au, Ag, Pd, Pt, and hybrid nanowires, with straight, spiral, or helical structures, and even rapid alteration of segments via electrochemical methods. In contrast, active surface growth for colloidal nanoparticles has to be more carefully controlled. The rich growth phenomena are discussed, highlighting the role of strong ligands, the control of deposition rates, the chiral induction, and the evidence for the active sites. (4) An active site with sparse ligands could also be exploited in etching, where the freshly exposed surface would promote further etching. The result is an unusual sharpening etching mode, in contrast to the conventional rounding mode for minimized surface energy.Colloidal nanosynthesis holds great promise for scalable on-demand synthesis, providing the crucial nanomaterials for future explorations. The strong ligands have delivered powerful synthetic controls, which could be further enhanced with in-depth studies on growth mechanisms and synthetic strategies, as well as functions and properties.

Recent advances in phosphorus containing noble metal electrocatalysts for direct liquid fuel cells

Direct liquid fuel cells (DLFCs) are considered as satisfactory alternatives to traditional fossil fuels owing to their unique advantages, e.g. environmental friendliness and easy storage. Noble metal catalysts are widely used to improve the efficiency of DLFCs. However, the high cost, low utilization and poor stability of noble metals restricted their practical applications. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore cost-effective electrocatalysts and further improve their electrocatalytic performance. Reducing the content of noble metals by adding low-priced phosphorus (P) has been considered as an effective strategy, which is able to enhance their electrocatalytic activity and anti-poisoning ability through effectively changing the electronic density of active sites. In the past few years, tremendous P containing catalysts have been synthesized and utilized in DLFCs. In this review, we summarize the fundamentals of electrochemical reactions and present recent progress in P containing noble metal catalysts for DLFCs, including the discussion of their shape, composition and the relationship between P and active sites. Finally, the challenges and some potential directions in this field are pointed out.

Integrating Pt16 Te Nanotroughs and Nanopillars into a 3D "Self-Supported" Hierarchical Nanostructure for Boosting Methanol Electrooxidation

To develop durable and low-price catalysts of methanol oxidation to commercialize direct methanol fuel cell, many attempts have been made at fabricating Pt-based hybrids by designing component-, morphology-, facet-, integration-pattern-varied nanostructures, and have achieved considerable successes. However, most of present catalysts still lack robust catalytic durability especially owing to the corrosion of mixed carbon and the poor mechanical stability of catalyst layer. Herein, Te nanowire array is transformed at an air/water interface into a 3D Pt₁₆ Te hierarchical nanostructure via an interface-confined galvanic replacement reaction. As-formed Pt₁₆ Te nanostructure has an asymmetrical architecture composed of nanotroughs and nanopillars, and nanopillars are perpendicular to nanotroughs with a loose arrangement. Pt₁₆ Te hierarchical nanostructure has a "self-supported" feature and, when directly used as the catalyst of methanol electrooxidation, exhibits superior catalytic activity (>four times larger in mass activity than state-of-the-art Pt/C in either acidic or basic solution) and long-term durability (after 500 cycles of cyclic voltammetric measurement, more than 55% of the initial specific activity remains whereas Pt/C only remains 22.2% in acidic solution and almost loses all activity in basic solution). This study fully demonstrates that designing "self-supported" catalyst film may be the next promising step for improving the catalytic performance of Pt-based hybrids.

The use of amino-based functional molecules for the controllable synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals: a minireview

Controlling the morphologies and structures of noble-metal nanocrystals has always been a frontier field in electrocatalysis. Functional molecules such as capping agents, surfactants and additives are indispensable in shape-control synthesis. Amino-based functional molecules have strong coordination abilities with metal ions, and they are widely used in the morphology control of nanocrystals. In this minireview, we pay close attention to recent advances in the use of amino-based functional molecules for the controllable synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals. The effects of various amino-based molecules on differently shaped noble-metal nanocrystals, including zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional nanocrystals, are reviewed and summarized. The roles and mechanisms of amino-based small molecules and long-chain ammonium salts relating to the morphology-control synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals are highlighted. Relationships between shape and electrocatalytic properties are also described. Finally, some key prospects and challenges relating to the controllable synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals and their electrocatalytic applications are proposed.

Platinum-Based Electrocatalysts for Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells: Enhanced Performances toward Alcohol Oxidation Reactions

In the past few decades, Pt-based electrocatalysts have attracted great interests due to their high catalytic performances toward the direct alcohol fuel cell (DAFC). However, the high cost, poor stability, and the scarcity of Pt have markedly hindered their large-scale utilization in commerce. Therefore, enhancing the activity and durability of Pt-based electrocatalysts, reducing the Pt amount and thus the cost of DAFC have become the keys for their practical applications. In this minireview, we summarized some basic concepts to evaluate the catalytic performances in electrocatalytic alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR) including electrochemical active surface area, activity and stability, the effective approaches for boosting the catalytic AOR performance involving size decrease, structure and morphology modulation, composition effect, catalyst supports, and assistance under other external energies. Furthermore, we also presented the remaining challenges of the Pt-based electrocatalysts to achieve the fabrication of a real DAFC.
