Two-Dimensional Ultrathin Silica Films

Two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin silica films have the potential to reach technological importance in electronics and catalysis. Several well-defined 2D-silica structures have been synthesized so far. The silica bilayer represents a 2D material with SiO₂ stoichiometry. It consists of precisely two layers of tetrahedral [SiO₄] building blocks, corner connected via oxygen bridges, thus forming a self-saturated silicon dioxide sheet with a thickness of ∼0.5 nm. Inspired by recent successful preparations and characterizations of these 2D-silica model systems, scientists now can forge novel concepts for realistic systems, particularly by atomic-scale studies with the most powerful and advanced surface science techniques and density functional theory calculations. This Review provides a solid introduction to these recent developments, breakthroughs, and implications on ultrathin 2D-silica films, including their atomic/electronic structures, chemical modifications, atom/molecule adsorptions, and catalytic reactivity properties, which can help to stimulate further investigations and understandings of these fundamentally important 2D materials.

Investigation of Deoxidation Process of MoO3 Using Environmental TEM

In situ environmental transmission electron microscope (ETEM) could provide intuitive and solid proof for the local structure and chemical evolution of materials under practical working conditions. In particular, coupled with atmosphere and thermal field, the behavior of nano catalysts could be directly observed during the catalytic reaction. Through the change of lattice structure, it can directly correlate the relationship between the structure, size and properties of materials in the nanoscale, and further directly and accurately, which is of great guiding value for the study of catalysis mechanism and the optimization of catalysts. As an outstanding catalytic material in the application of methane reforming, molybdenum oxide (MoO₃)-based materials and its deoxidation process were studied by in situ ETEM method. The corresponding microstructures and components evolution were analyzed by diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron energy loss spectrum (EELS) techniques. MoO₃ had a good directional deoxidation process accompanied with the process of nanoparticles crushing and regrowth in hydrogen (H₂) and thermal field. However, in the absence of H₂, the samples would exhibit different structural evolution.

Kinetically Determined Shapes of Grain Boundaries in Graphene

A large-scale chemical synthesis of graphene produces a polycrystalline material with grain boundaries (GBs) that disturb the lattice structure and drastically affect material properties. An uncontrollable formation of GB can be detrimental, yet precise GB engineering can impart added functionalities onto graphene-and its noncarbon two-dimensional "cousins." While the importance of growth kinetics in shaping single-crystalline graphene islands has lately been appreciated, kinetics' role in determining a GB structure remains unaddressed. Here we report on the analysis of the GB formation as captured by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations in contrast with global minimum guided GB structures considered previously. We identified a key parameter-edge misorientation angle-that describes the initial geometry of merging grains and unambiguously defines the resulting GB structure, while a commonly used lattice tilt angle corresponds to several qualitatively different GB structures. A provided systematic analysis of GB structures formed from a full range of edge misorientation angles reveals conditions that result in straight and periodic GBs as well as conditions responsible for meandering and disordered GBs. Additionally, we address the special case of translational GBs, where lattices of merging grains are aligned but shifted compared to each other. Collected data can be used for deliberate GB structural engineering, for example, by a three-dimensional patterning of the substrate surface to introduce disclinations creating a graphene lattice tilt.
