Sequential Growth as a Mechanism of Silver-Glutathione Monolayer-Protected Cluster Formation

Enzyme-mimic catalytic activities and biomedical applications of noble metal nanoclusters

Noble metal (e.g., Au and Ag) nanoclusters (NCs), which exhibit structural complexity and hierarchy comparable to those of natural proteins, have been increasingly pursued in artificial enzyme research. The protein-like structure of metal NCs not only ensures enzyme-mimic catalytic activity, including peroxidase-, catalase-, and superoxide dismutase-mimic activities, but also affords an unprecedented opportunity to correlate the catalytic performance with the cluster structure at the molecular or atomic levels. In this review, we aim to summarize the recent progress in programming and demystify the enzyme-mimic catalytic activity of metal NCs, presenting the state-of-the-art understandings of the structure-property relationship of metal NC-based artificial enzymes. By leveraging on a concise anatomy of the hierarchical structure of noble metal NCs, we manage to unravel the structural origin of the catalytic performance of metal NCs. Noteworthily, it has been proven that the surface ligands and metal-ligand interface of metal NCs are instrumental in influencing enzyme-mimic catalytic activities. In addition to the structure-property correlation, we also discuss the synthetic methodologies feasible to tailoring the cluster structure at the atomic level. Prior to the closure of this review with our perspectives in noble metal NC-based artificial enzymes, we also exemplify the biomedical applications based on the enzyme-mimic catalysis of metal NCs with the theranostics of kidney injury, brain inflammation, and tumors. The fundamental and methodological advancements delineated in this review would be conducive to further development of metal NCs as an alternative family of artificial enzymes.

Silver-Exchanged Zeolite Y Catalyzes a Selective Insertion of Carbenes into C-H and O-H Bonds

Commercially available zeolite Y modulates the catalytic activity and selectivity of ultrasmall silver species during the Buchner reaction and the carbene addition to methylene and hydroxyl bonds, by simply exchanging the counter cations of the zeolite framework. The zeolite acts as a macroligand to tune the silver catalytic site, enabling the use of this cheap and recyclable solid catalyst for the in situ formation of carbenes from diazoacetate and selective insertion in different C-H (i.e., cyclohexane) and C-O (i.e., water) bonds. The amount of catalyst in the reaction can be as low as ≤0.1 mol % silver. Besides, this reactivity allows deeply drying the HY zeolite framework by making the strongly adsorbed water molecules react with the in situ formed carbenes.

MOF-Triggered Synthesis of Subnanometer Ag02 Clusters and Fe3+ Single Atoms: Heterogenization Led to Efficient and Synergetic One-Pot Catalytic Reactions

The combination of well-defined Fe³⁺ isolated single-metal atoms and Ag₂ subnanometer metal clusters within the channels of a metal-organic framework (MOF) is reported and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction for the first time. The resulting hybrid material, with the formula [Ag⁰₂(Ag⁰)_1.34Fe^III_0.66]@Na^I₂{Ni^II₄[Cu^II₂(Me₃mpba)₂]₃}·63H₂O (Fe³⁺Ag⁰₂@MOF), is capable of catalyzing the unprecedented direct conversion of styrene to phenylacetylene in one pot. In particular, Fe³⁺Ag⁰₂@MOF─which can easily be obtained in a gram scale─exhibits superior catalytic activity for the TEMPO-free oxidative cross-coupling of styrenes with phenyl sulfone to give vinyl sulfones in yields up to >99%, which are ultimately transformed, in situ, to the corresponding phenylacetylene product. The results presented here constitute a paradigmatic example of how the synthesis of different metal species in well-defined solid catalysts, combined with speciation of the true metal catalyst of an organic reaction in solution, allows the design of a new challenging reaction.

Toward Controlled Syntheses of Diphosphine-Protected Homochiral Gold Nanoclusters through Precursor Engineering

Controllable syntheses of Au nanoclusters (NCs) with different nuclearities are of great significance due to the kernel-dependent physicochemical properties. Herein, two pairs of enantiomeric Au NCs [Au₁₉(R/S-BINAP)₄(PhC≡C)Cl₄] (SD/Au19) and [Au₁₁(R/S-BINAP)₄(PhC≡C)₂]·Cl (SD/Au11), both with atropos (rigid axial chirality) diphosphine BINAP (2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthalene) as the predominant organic ligands, were controllably synthesized through precursor engineering. The former was obtained by direct reduction of HAuCl₄·4H₂O, while the latter was obtained by reduction of [Au(SMe₂)Cl] instead. Intriguingly, the kernel of SD/Au19 contains an Au₇ pentagonal bipyramid capped by two boat-like Au₆ rings, which represents another type of Au₁₉ kernel, making SD/Au19 a good candidate for comparative study with other Au₁₉ NCs to get more insight into the distinct structural evolution of phosphine-protected Au NCs. Despite the previous chiroptical studies on some other chiral undecagold NCs, the successful attainment of the X-ray crystal structures for SD/Au11 not only provides a step forward toward better correlating the chiroptical activities with their structural details but also reveals that even the auxiliary protecting ligands also play a nontrivial role in tuning the geometrical structures of the metal NCs. The chiroptical activities of both SD/Au19 and SD/Au11 were found to originate from the chiral ligands and core distortions; the extended π-electron systems in the BINAP ligands have proved to positively contribute to the electronic absorptions and thus disturb the corresponding circular dichroism (CD) responses.

The Role of Oxidation during the Synthesis of Silver-Glutathione Monolayer-Protected Clusters

The synthesis of metal monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) is still not well understood. It was recently shown that the mechanism of MPC formation involves sequential growth, wherein small MPCs form first and then grow into progressively larger sizes. The sequential growth model does not entirely explain all experimental observations, however. For example, the evolution of MPC product sizes is found to be a non-monotonic function of reaction kinetics, whereas the sequential growth model predicts monotonic behavior. Size evolution of MPCs is studied during synthetic reactions for a wide range of kinetics and it is found that all syntheses began with the sequential growth of MPCs but also found that growth transitioned to degradation if reduction kinetics are fast enough to give way to ambient oxidation. It is identified that MPCs can degrade via oxidation during syntheses and in a manner that is opposite to sequential growth, namely by forming smaller known MPC species from larger MPC species. This sequential degradation process therefore played an important role in determining final MPC products for reactions with fast reduction kinetics. Together, complementary oxidative and reductive processes provide a more complete description of MPC synthesis as well as new tools for controlling metal MPC synthesis.
