Hydrogen-Etched Bifunctional Sulfur-Defect-Rich ReS2 /CC Electrocatalyst for Highly Efficient HER and OER

Altering electronic structure of nickel foam supported CoNi-based oxide through Al ions modulation for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Developing highly active and durable non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial in achieving efficient energy conversion. Herein, we reported a CoNiAl0.5O/NF nanofilament that exhibits higher OER activity than previously reported IrO2-based catalysts in alkaline solution. The as-synthesized CoNiAl0.5O/NF catalyst demonstrates a low overpotential of 230 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2, indicating its high catalytic efficiency. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits a Tafel slope of 26 mV dec-1, suggesting favorable reaction kinetics. The CoNiAl0.5O/NF catalyst exhibits impressive stability, ensuring its potential for practical applications. Detailed characterizations reveal that the enhanced activity of CoNiAl0.5O/NF can be attributed to the electronic modulation achieved through Al3+ incorporation, which promotes the emergence of higher-valence Ni metal, facilitating nanofilament formation and improving mass transport and charge transfer processes. The synergistic effect between nanofilaments and porous nickel foam (NF) substrate significantly enhances the electrical conductivity of this catalyst material. This study highlights the significance of electronic structures for improving the activity of cost-effective and non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for the OER.

Optimizing the intermediates adsorbability and revealing the dynamic reconstruction of Co6Fe3S8 solid solution for bifunctional water splitting

Co9S8 has been extensively studied as a promising catalyst for water electrolysis. Doping Co9S8 with Fe improves its oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance by regulating the catalyst self-reconfigurability and enhancing the absorption capacity of OER intermediates. However, the poor alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties of Co9S8 limit its application in bifunctional water splitting. Herein, we combined Fe doping and sulfur vacancy engineering to synergistically enhance the bifunctional water-splitting performance of Co9S8. The as-synthesized Co6Fe3S8 catalyst exhibited excellent OER and HER characteristics with low overpotentials of 250 and 84 mV, respectively. It also resulted in the low Tafel slopes of 135 mV dec-1 for the OER and 114 mV dec-1 for the HER. A two-electrode electrolytic cell with Co6Fe3S8 used as both the cathode and anode produced a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low voltage of only 1.48 V, maintaining high stability for 100 h. The results of in/ex-situ experiments indicated that the OER process induced electrochemical reconfiguration, forming CoOOH/FeOOH active species on the catalyst surface to enhance its OER performance. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations revealed that Fe doping and the presence of unsaturated coordination metal sites in Co6Fe3S8 promoted H2O and H* adsorption for the HER. The findings of this study can help develop a strategy for designing highly efficient bifunctional water splitting electrocatalysts.

Synthesis and Electrocatalytic Applications of Layer-Structured Metal Chalcogenides Composites

Featured with the attractive properties such as large surface area, unique atomic layer thickness, excellent electronic conductivity, and superior catalytic activity, layered metal chalcogenides (LMCs) have received considerable research attention in electrocatalytic applications. In this review, the approaches developed to synthesize LMCs-based electrocatalysts are summarized. Recent progress in LMCs-based composites for electrochemical energy conversion applications including oxygen reduction reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, overall water splitting, and nitrogen reduction reaction is reviewed, and the potential opportunities and practical obstacles for the development of LMCs-based composites as high-performing active substances for electrocatalytic applications are also discussed. This review may provide an inspiring guidance for developing high-performance LMCs for electrochemical energy conversion applications.

Oxalic Acid-Assisted Vacancy Engineering Promotes Iron-Copper Sulfide Nanosheets for High-Current Density Water Oxidation

The effective defect and interface coupling are pivotal for the promotion of the catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we report novel hybrid nanosheets with sulfur vacancies composed of FeS2 and Cu39S28 grown on Cu foam (Vs-FeS2/Cu39S28). The optimal Vs-FeS2/Cu39S28 exhibits a high current output of 500 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 370 mV and robust stability for 60 h at 100 mA cm-2, surpassing the values of most previously reported Cu-based catalysts. Furthermore, a two-electrode electrolyzer made by pairing the prepared catalyst with commercial Pt/C requires a low cell voltage of 1.75 V at 100 mA cm-2 and is retained over 80 h. Key to its excellent performance is the synergism between intertwined FeS2 and Cu39S28 domains, enriched by the deliberate introduction of sulfur vacancies, thus optimizing the electronic structure and causing the proliferation of catalytic active sites. This work presents a potent Cu-based electrocatalyst and emphasizes the leveraging of non-precious metals for efficient water oxidation.

Defective ReS2 Triggers High Intrinsic Piezoelectricity for Piezo-Photocatalytic Efficient Sterilization

Rhenium disulfide (ReS2) is a promising piezoelectric catalyst due to its excellent electron transfer ability and abundant unsaturated sites. The 1T' phase structure leads to the evolution of ReS2 into a centrosymmetric spatial structure, which restricts its application in piezoelectric catalysis. Herein, we propose a controllable defect engineering strategy to trigger the piezoelectric response of ReS2. The introduction of vacancy defects disrupts the initial centrosymmetric structure, which breaks the piezoelectric polarization bond and generates piezoelectric properties. By using transmission electron microscopy, we characterized it at the atomic scale and determined that vacancy defects contribute to an excellent piezoelectric property through first-principles calculations. Notably, the piezoelectric coefficient of the catalyst with 40 s-etching (ReS2@C-40) is 23.07 pm/V, an order of magnitude greater than other transition metal dichalcogenides. It demonstrated the feasibility of optimizing piezoelectric properties by increasing the conformational asymmetry. Based on its remarkable piezoelectric activity, ReS2@C-40 exhibits highly efficient piezo-photocatalytic synergistic sterilization performance with 99.99% eradication of Escherichia coli and 96.67% of Staphylococcus aureus within 30 min. This pioneering research on the coupling effect of ReS2 in piezoelectric catalysis and photocatalysis provides ideas for the development of piezo-photocatalysts and efficient water purification technologies.

Rhenium-Based Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

Due to the contamination and global warming problems, it is necessary to search for alternative environmentally friendly energy sources. In this area, hydrogen is a promising alternative. Hydrogen is even more promising, when it is obtained through water electrolysis operated with renewable energy sources. Among the possible devices to perform electrolysis, proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers appear as the most promising commercial systems for hydrogen production in the coming years. However, their massification is affected by the noble metals used as electrocatalysts in their electrodes, with high commercial value: Pt at the cathode where the hydrogen evolution reaction occurs (HER) and Ru/Ir at the anode where the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) happens. Therefore, to take full advantage of the PEM technology for green H2 production and build up a mature PEM market, it is imperative to search for more abundant, cheaper, and stable catalysts, reaching the highest possible activities at the lowest overpotential with the longest stability under the harsh acidic conditions of a PEM. In the search for new electrocatalysts and considering the predictions of a Trasatti volcano plot, rhenium appears to be a promising candidate for HER in acidic media. At the same time, recent studies provide evidence of its potential as an OER catalyst. However, some of these reports have focused on chemical and photochemical water splitting and have not always considered acidic media. This review summarizes rhenium-based electrocatalysts for water splitting under acidic conditions: i.e., potential candidates as cathode materials. In the various sections, we review the mechanism concepts of electrocatalysis, evaluation methods, and the different rhenium-based materials applied for the HER in acidic media. As rhenium is less common for the OER, we included a section about its use in chemical and photochemical water oxidation and as an electrocatalyst under basic conditions. Finally, concluding remarks and perspectives are given about rhenium for water splitting.

Bio-inspired design of NiFeP nanoparticles embedded in (N,P) co-doped carbon for boosting overall water splitting

The design and synthesis of cost-effective and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting via a green and sustainable fabrication way remain a challenging problem. Herein, a bio-inspired method was used to synthesize NiFeP nanoparticles embedded in (N,P) co-doped carbon with the added carbon nanotubes. The obtained Ni_0.8Fe_0.2P-C catalyst displayed excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances in both alkaline and alkaline simulated seawater solutions. The optimal Ni_0.8Fe_0.2P-C/NF only needs overpotentials of 45 and 242 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 under HER and OER working conditions in 1.0 M KOH solution, respectively. First-principles calculations revealed the presence of a strong interaction between the carbon layer and metal phosphide nanoparticles. Benefiting from this and carbon nanotubes modification, the fabricated Ni_0.8Fe_0.2P-C presents impressive stability, working continuously for 100 h without collapse. A low alkaline cell voltage of 1.56 V for the assembled Ni_0.8Fe_0.2P-C/NF//Ni_0.8Fe_0.2P-C/NF electrocatalyzer could afford a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. Moreover, when integrated with a photovoltaic device, the bifunctional Ni_0.8Fe_0.2P-C electrocatalyst demonstrates application potential for sustainable solar-driven water electrolysis.

Facet modulation of nickel-ruthenium nanocrystals for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Constructing highly active electrocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both alkaline and acidic media is essential for achieving a sustainable energy economy. Here, a facile ethylene glycol reduction strategy was employed to design the nickel-ruthenium nanocrystals (Ni-Ru NC) with an exposed highly active Ru (101) facet as an efficient electrocatalyst for HER. Testings show Ni-Ru NC outperforms the benchmark catalyst Pt/C by delivering extraordinarily low overpotentials of 21.1 and 70.9 mV to drive 10 mA cm^-2 in acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively. The results of experimental and theoretical studies suggest that Ni can modulate the electronic structure of the Ru NC and optimize the hydrogen adsorption free energy on Ru's surface, which accelerates the charge transfer kinetics and enhances the HER performance. The study support the potential application of facet-modulated Ru-based HER eleccatalyst in an alkaline environment.

Vacancy Defects in 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Electrocatalysts: From Aggregated to Atomic Configuration

Vacancy defect engineering has been well leveraged to flexibly shape comprehensive physicochemical properties of diverse catalysts. In particular, growing research effort has been devoted to engineering chalcogen anionic vacancies (S/Se/Te) of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) toward the ultimate performance limit of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In spite of remarkable progress achieved in the past decade, systematic and in-depth insights into the state-of-the-art vacancy engineering for 2D-TMDs-based electrocatalysis are still lacking. Herein, this review delivers a full picture of vacancy engineering evolving from aggregated to atomic configurations covering their development background, controllable manufacturing, thorough characterization, and representative HER application. Of particular interest, the deep-seated correlations between specific vacancy regulation routes and resulting catalytic performance improvement are logically clarified in terms of atomic rearrangement, charge redistribution, energy band variation, intermediate adsorption-desorption optimization, and charge/mass transfer facilitation. Beyond that, a broader vision is cast into the cutting-edge research fields of vacancy-engineering-based single-atom catalysis and dynamic structure-performance correlations across catalyst service lifetime. Together with critical discussion on residual challenges and future prospects, this review sheds new light on the rational design of advanced defect catalysts and navigates their broader application in high-efficiency energy conversion and storage fields.

In Situ Construction of Bifunctional N-Doped Carbon-Anchored Co Nanoparticles for OER and ORR

Designing highly active and more durable oxygen electrocatalysts for regenerative metal-air batteries and water splitting is of practical significance. Herein, an advanced Co/N-C-800 catalyst composed of abundant Co-N_x structures and carbon defects derived from cobalt phthalocyanine is synthesized. Remarkably, this catalyst exhibits favorable catalytic performance toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a receivable overpotential of 274 mV in an alkaline medium achieving a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 43.6 mV decade^-1, outperforming the commercial RuO₂ catalyst. It further displays a high half-wave potential (0.82 V) for the oxygen reduction reaction in 0.1 M KOH. Theoretical calculations reveal that the Co-N_x active sites along with the carbon defects can decrease the adsorption energy of intermediates (OH*, O*, and OOH*) and enhance the electron-transfer ability, thus boosting the OER process.

Design of charge transfer channels: defective TiO2/MoP supported on carbon cloth for solar-light-driven hydrogen generation

We successfully integrated MoP and TiO₂ on flexible carbon cloth (CC) to construct a panel photoreactor with efficient charge transfer channels, where CC acts as an electron collector and guides directional migration of electrons (TiO₂ → MoP → CC).
