Prototype Atomically Dispersed Supported Metal Catalysts: Iridium and Platinum

Distribution of Pt single atom coordination environments on anatase TiO2 supports controls reactivity

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer efficient metal utilization and distinct reactivity compared to supported metal nanoparticles. Structure-function relationships for SACs often assume that active sites have uniform coordination environments at particular binding sites on support surfaces. Here, we investigate the distribution of coordination environments of Pt SAs dispersed on shape-controlled anatase TiO2 supports specifically exposing (001) and (101) surfaces. Pt SAs on (101) are found on the surface, consistent with existing structural models, whereas those on (001) are beneath the surface after calcination. Pt SAs under (001) surfaces exhibit lower reactivity for CO oxidation than those on (101) surfaces due to their limited accessibility to gas phase species. Pt SAs deposited on commercial-TiO2 are found both at the surface and in the bulk, posing challenges to structure-function relationship development. This study highlights heterogeneity in SA coordination environments on oxide supports, emphasizing a previously overlooked consideration in the design of SACs.

Catalysts Prepared from Atomically Dispersed Ce(III) on MgO Rival Bulk Ceria for CO Oxidation

Atomically dispersed cerium catalysts on an inert, crystalline MgO powder support were prepared by using both Ce(III) and Ce(IV) precursors. The materials were used as catalysts for CO oxidation in a once-through flow reactor and characterized by atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction, among other techniques, before and after catalysis. The most active catalysts, formed from the precursor incorporating Ce(III), displayed performance similar to that reported for bulk ceria under comparable conditions. The catalyst provided stable time-on-stream performance for as long as it was kept on-stream, 2 days, increasing slightly in activity as the atomically dispersed cerium ions were transformed into ceria nanodomains represented as CeOx and having increased reducibility on the MgO support. The results suggest how highly dispersed supported ceria catalysts with low cerium loadings can be prepared and may pave the way for improved efficiencies of cerium utilization in oxidation catalysis.

Recent Advances on Single-Atom Catalysts for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The present energy crisis and environmental challenges may be efficiently resolved by converting carbon dioxide (CO2 ) into various useful carbon products. The development of more effective catalysts has been the main focus of current research on photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Due to their high atomic efficiency and superior catalytic activity, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable interest in catalytic CO2 conversion. This review discusses the current research developments, obstacles, and potential of SACs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. And further, discusses the principle of photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction. This work has compared and analyzed the effects of support materials and active site types in SACs on photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. This work believes that by sharing these developments, some inspiration for the rational design and development of stable and effective photocatalytic CO2 reduction catalysts based on SACs can be provided.

The Key Effect of Carboxyl Group and CuN2 O2 Coordinate Structure for Cu, N Co-Doped Carbon Dots with Peroxidase-Like Property

Carbon dots (CDs) with good water solubility and biocompatibility have become a research hotspot in the nano-enzyme and biomedical field. However, the problems of low catalytic activity and ambiguous catalytic site of CDs as nanozymes still need to be addressed. In this work, CDs loaded with Cu single atoms are obtained through pyrolysis, and the coordination structure and surface functional groups are regulated by adjusting the pyrolysis temperature. CDs obtained at 300 °C (named Cu-CDs-300) have the most carboxyl content and Cu is coordinated in the form of CuN₂ O₂ , which can better decompose H₂ O₂ to produce free radical and is beneficial to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The v_max is 6.56*10^-7  m s^-1 , 6.56 times higher than that of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Moreover, Cu-CDs-300 can effectively lead to CT26 apoptosis by generating much free radicals. This work demonstrates the synergistic effect of oxygen-containing functional groups and metal coordination structures on peroxide-like activity of CDs and provides new ideas for the design of clear active structure and high efficiency peroxide-like single atom CDs catalyst.

Atomically Dispersed Platinum in Surface and Subsurface Sites on MgO Have Contrasting Catalytic Properties for CO Oxidation

Atomically dispersed metals on metal oxide supports are a rapidly growing class of catalysts. Developing an understanding of where and how the metals are bonded to the supports is challenging because support surfaces are heterogeneous, and most reports lack a detailed consideration of these points. Herein, we report two atomically dispersed CO oxidation catalysts having markedly different metal-support interactions: platinum in the first layer of crystalline MgO powder and platinum in the second layer of this support. Structural models have been determined on the basis of data and computations, including those determined by extended X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopies, infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The data demonstrate the transformation of surface to subsurface platinum as the temperature of sample calcination increased. Catalyst performance data demonstrate the lower activity but greater stability of the subsurface platinum than of the surface platinum.

IrOx @In2 O3 Heterojunction from Individually Crystallized Oxides for Weak-Light-Promoted Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Multi-field coupling, especially photo-assisted electrocatalysis, has recently been studied to further improve the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, an n-type cubic In₂ O₃ semiconductor is employed for the first time to load IrO_x species (Ir-In₂ O₃ mass ratio: 17.6 %). Consequently, the IrO_x @In₂ O₃ heterojunction, which exhibits outstanding OER performance promoted by weak-light irradiation, is formed. Notably, IrO_x (approximately 1.7 nm in size) and In₂ O₃ are observed to crystallize independently during heterogeneous nucleation with no Ir atoms doped in the In₂ O₃ lattice. This avoids Ir loss and ensures the full exposure of all Ir-based sites. The IrO_x @In₂ O₃ heterojunction exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic water oxidation with overpotential values of 190 and 231 mV at current densities of 10 and 50 mA cm^-2 , surpassing all IrO_x -based catalyst results reported to date. Nano-sized IrO_x on the surface, irradiated by the weak-light beam of LED-365 (1.8 mW cm^-2 ), can be fully activated as an OER site. Moreover, the overpotential is further reduced to 176 and 210 mV to deliver the corresponding current. This work is anticipated to aid in the design of more efficient multi-field coupling OER systems.

A Theory-Guided X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Approach for Identifying Active Sites in Atomically Dispersed Transition-Metal Catalysts

Atomically dispersed supported metal catalysts offer new properties and the benefits of maximized metal accessibility and utilization. The characterization of these materials, however, remains challenging. Using atomically dispersed platinum supported on crystalline MgO (chosen for its well-defined bonding sites) as a prototypical example, we demonstrate how systematic density functional theory calculations for assessing all the potentially stable platinum sites, combined with automated analysis of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra, leads to unbiased identification of isolated, surface-enveloped platinum cations as the catalytic species for CO oxidation. The catalyst has been characterized by atomic-resolution imaging and EXAFS and high-energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. The proposed platinum sites are in agreement with experiment. This theory-guided workflow leads to rigorously determined structural models and provides a more detailed picture of the structure of the catalytically active site than what is currently possible with conventional EXAFS analyses. As this approach is efficient and agnostic to the metal, support, and catalytic reaction, we posit that it will be of broad interest to the materials characterization and catalysis communities.

Highly active and stable Ir nanoclusters derived from Ir1/MgAl2O4 single-atom catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) prepared by the atom trapping method often possess high stability yet have limited advantages regarding catalytic performance due to the strong metal-support interaction. Using these SACs as seeds to develop supported nanoclusters or nanoparticles has, however, been proven to be effective in improving the catalysts' intrinsic activity. Herein, we have prepared extremely stable Ir SACs supported by MgAl₂O₄ via atomic trapping and used them as seeds to fabricate highly active and stable Ir nanocluster catalysts by high-temperature reduction. The activity toward N₂O decomposition increased by more than ten times compared with that of the parent Ir SACs. This study provides a new avenue to design and develop highly active and stable catalysts for industrial use.
