Host-Guest Thin Films by Confining Ultrafine Pt/C QDs into Metal-Organic Frameworks for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks and their roles in electrocatalysis

Due to their exceptional chemical stability in water and high structural tunability, zirconium(IV)-based MOFs (Zr-MOFs) have been considered attractive materials in the broad fields of electrocatalysis. Numerous studies published since 2015 have attempted to utilise Zr-MOFs in electrocatalysis, with the porous framework serving as either the active electrocatalyst or the scaffold or surface coating to further enhance the performance of the actual electrocatalyst. Herein, the roles of Zr-MOFs in electrocatalytic processes are discussed, and some selected examples reporting the applications of Zr-MOFs in various electrocatalytic reactions, including several studies from our group, are overviewed. Challenges, limitations and opportunities in using Zr-MOFs in electrocatalysis in future studies are discussed.

Encapsulation engineering of porous crystalline frameworks for delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence

Delayed luminescence (DF), including phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibit common and broad application prospects in optoelectronic displays, biological imaging, and encryption. Thus, the combination of delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence is attracting increasing attention. The encapsulation of guest emitters in various host matrices to form host-guest systems has been demonstrated to be an appealing strategy to further enhance and/or modulate their delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. Compared with conventional liquid crystals, polymers, and supramolecular matrices, porous crystalline frameworks (PCFs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), zeolites and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) can not only overcome shortcomings such as flexibility and disorder but also achieve the ordered encapsulation of guests and long-term stability of chiral structures, providing new promising host platforms for the development of DF and CPL. In this review, we provide a comprehensive and critical summary of the recent progress in host-guest photochemistry via the encapsulation engineering of guest emitters in PCFs, particularly focusing on delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. Initially, the general principle of phosphorescence, TADF and CPL, the combination of DF and CPL, and energy transfer processes between host and guests are introduced. Subsequently, we comprehensively discuss the critical factors affecting the encapsulation engineering of guest emitters in PCFs, such as pore structures, the confinement effect, charge and energy transfer between the host and guest, conformational dynamics, and aggregation model of guest emitters. Thereafter, we summarize the effective methods for the preparation of host-guest systems, especially single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation and epitaxial growth, which are distinct from conventional methods based on amorphous materials. Then, the recent advancements in host-guest systems based on PCFs for delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence are highlighted. Finally, we present our personal insights into the challenges and future opportunities in this promising field.

Highly sensitive and selective fluorescent "turn-on" sensor for Ag+ detection using MAPbBr3@PCN-221(Fe): An efficient Ag+-bridged energy transfer from perovskite to MOF

Metal ion-induced water pollution is attracting increasing public attention. Perovskite quantum dots and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), owing to their outstanding properties, hold promise as ideal probes for detecting metal ions. In this study, a composite material, MAPbBr3@PCN-221(Fe), was prepared by encapsulating MAPbBr3 quantum dots with PCN-221(Fe), demonstrating high chemical stability and good reusability. The composite material shows a sensitive fluorescence turn-on signal in the presence of silver ions. The fluorescence intensity of the composite material exhibits a linear relationship with the concentration of Ag+ in the solution, with a low detection limit of 8.68 µM. Moreover, the fluorescence signal exhibits a strong selectivity for Ag+, enabling the detection of Ag+ concentration. This fluorescence turn-on signal originates from the Ag+-bridged energy transfer from the conductive band of MAPbBr3 to the excited state of the MOF, which is directly proportional to the concentration of silver ions. Simultaneously, this finding may open up a new possibility in artificial controlled energy transfer from perovskite to MOF for future development.

Pt-Modified High Entropy Rare Earth Oxide for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution in pH-Universal Environments

The development of efficient and stable catalysts for hydrogen production from electrolytic water in a wide pH range is of great significance in alleviating the energy crisis. Herein, Pt nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on the vacancy of high entropy rare earth oxides (HEREOs) were prepared for the first time for highly efficient hydrogen production by water electrolysis. The prepared Pt-(LaCeSmYErGdYb)O showed excellent electrochemical performances, which require only 12, 57, and 77 mV to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M PBS environments, respectively. In addition, Pt-(LaCeSmYErGdYb)O has successfully worked at 400 mA cm-2 @ 60 °C for 100 h in 0.5 M H2SO4, presenting the high mass activity of 37.7 A mg-1Pt and turnover frequency (TOF) value of 38.2 s-1 @ 12 mV, which is far superior to the recently reported hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have revealed that the interactions between Pt and HEREO have optimized the electronic structures for electron transfer and the binding strength of intermediates. This further leads to optimized proton binding and water dissociation, supporting the highly efficient and robust HER performances in different environments. This work provides a new idea for the design of efficient RE-based electrocatalysts.

Inducing Circularly Polarized Luminescence by Confined Synthesis of Ultrasmall Chiral Carbon Nanodot Arrays in Pyrene-Based MOF Thin Film

Combining the features of the host-guest system and chirality is an efficient strategy to achieve circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Herein, well-defined chiral carbon nanodot (chirCND) arrays were confined-synthesized by low-temperature calcination of a chiral amino acid loaded metal-organic framework (MOF) to induce high CPL. An achiral porous pyrene-based MOF NU-1000 thin film as the host template was prepared by a liquid-phase epitaxial layer-by-layer fashion, and chiral amino acids as the carbon sources could be confined in the porous MOF and carbonized to homogeneous and ultrasmall chirCND arrays, resulting in a chirCNDs@NU-1000 thin film (l-CNDsx@NU-1000; x = l-cysteine (cys), l-serine, l-histidine, l-glutamic acid, and l-pyroglutamic acid). The results show the pristine chirCNDs by directly carbonizing chiral amino acids hardly endow them with a CPL property. By contrast, benefiting from the arrayed confinement and coordination interaction between chirCNDs and NU-1000, the chirality transfer on the excited state of chirCNDs@NU-1000 is enabled, leading to strong CPL performance (a high luminescence dissymmetry factor glum of l-CNDscys@NU-1000 thin film reached 1.74 × 10-2). This study of chirCNDs encapsulated in fluorescent MOF thin films provides a strategy for developing uniform chiral carbon nanoarrays and offers chiral host-guest thin-film materials for optical applications.

Integration of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Metals: Synergy for Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis is a highly promising technology widely used in clean energy conversion. There is a continuing need to develop advanced electrocatalysts to catalyze the critical electrochemical reactions. Integrating metal active species, including various metal nanostructures (NSs) and atomically dispersed metal sites (ADMSs), into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) leads to the formation of promising heterogeneous electrocatalysts that take advantage of both components. Among them, MOFs can provide support and protection for the active sites on guest metals, and the resulting host-guest interactions can synergistically enhance the electrocatalytic performance. In this review, three key concerns on MOF-metal heterogeneous electrocatalysts regarding the catalytic sites, conductivity, and catalytic stability are first presented. Then, rational integration strategies of MOFs and metals, including the integration of metal NSs via surface anchoring, space confining, and MOF coating, as well as the integration of ADMSs either with the metal nodes/linkers or within the pores of MOFs, along with their recent progress on synergistic cooperation for specific electrochemical reactions are summarized. Finally, current challenges and possible solutions in applying these increasingly concerned electrocatalysts are also provided.

Boosting Activity and Selectivity of UiO-66 through Acidity/Alkalinity Functionalization in Dimethyl Carbonate Catalysis

The acid-base properties of supports have an enormous impact on catalytic reactions to regulate the selectivity and activity of supported catalysts. Herein, a train of Pd-X-UiO-66 (X = NO₂ , NH₂ , and CH₃ ) catalysts with different acidity/alkalinity functional groups and encapsulated Pd(II) species is first developed, whose activities in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) catalysis are then investigated in details. Thereinto, the Pd-NO₂ -UiO-66 catalyst with acidity functionalization exhibits the best catalytic behavior: the DMC selectivity stemmed from methyl nitrite (MN) is up to 68%, the conversion of CO is 73.4%. The obtained experimental results demonstrate that the NO₂ group not only affected the interaction between X-UiO-66 and Pd(II) active sites but also play an indispensable role in the adsorption and activation of MN and CO, which remarkably promote the formation of the COOCH₃ ^* intermediate and DMC product.

Defective Homojunction Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Highly Efficient Sonodynamic Therapy

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) with non-invasiveness and high tissue-penetrating ability has attracted widespread interest in treating deep-seated tumors or infections. To enhance the treatment efficacy of SDT, the development of high-efficiency and stable sonosensitizers are still needed. Herein, a defective homojunction porphyrin-based metal-organic framework (MOF) with greatly enhanced sonocatalytic ability is easily prepared and used for SDT of osteomyelitis infected by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Acetic acid and benzoic acid are chosen as modulators during the hydrothermal synthesis of porphyrin-based MOF. It is found that the crystal structure of MOF shifts from PCN-222 to PCN-224 as the amount of acetic acid increases. Interestingly, the defective PCN (D-PCN) contains a two-phase homojunction structure of PCN-222/PCN-224. The sonocatalytic reactive oxygen species production presents a volcano-type trend with increased acetic acid, among which D-PCN-2 with more content of PCN-224 has the best sonocatalytic antibacterial ability. The reduced band gap introduced a defect, and type-II homojunction structures of D-PCN-2 improve the separation of the ultrasound-triggered electron hole, which significantly enhances the SDT effect. Through a mixed linker approach, this work develops a new defect-induced homojunction MOF with great performance for SDT of MRSA-infected osteomyelitis.

Porphyrins and phthalocyanines as biomimetic tools for photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 reduction

The increasing energy demand and environmental issues caused by the over-exploitation of fossil fuels render the need for renewable, clean, and environmentally benign energy sources unquestionably urgent. The zero-emission energy carrier, H₂ is an ideal alternative to carbon-based fuels especially when it is generated photocatalytically from water. Additionally, the photocatalytic conversion of CO₂ into chemical fuels can reduce the CO₂ emissions and have a positive environmental and economic impact. Inspired by natural photosynthesis, plenty of artificial photocatalytic schemes based on porphyrinoids have been investigated. This review covers the recent advances in photocatalytic H₂ production and CO₂ reduction systems containing porphyrin or phthalocyanine derivatives. The unique properties of porphyrinoids enable their utilization both as chromophores and as catalysts. The homogeneous photocatalytic systems are initially described, presenting the various approaches for the improvement of photosensitizing activity and the enhancement of catalytic performance at the molecular level. On the other hand, for the development of the heterogeneous systems, numerous methods were employed such as self-assembled supramolecular porphyrinoid nanostructures, construction of organic frameworks, combination with 2D materials and adsorption onto semiconductors. The dye sensitization on semiconductors opened the way for molecular-based dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (DSPECs) devices based on porphyrins and phthalocyanines. The research in photocatalytic systems as discussed herein remains challenging since there are still many limitations making them unfeasible to be used at a large scale application before finding a large-scale application.

Adsorption and photocatalytic properties of porphyrin loaded MIL-101 (Cr) in methylene blue degradation

In this study for the very first time, zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) was loaded into MIL-101 (Zn[TPP]@MIL-101) to perform an adsorptive and photocatalytic dye removal. The physicochemical attributes of the catalyst were thoroughly determined by the usage of XRD, FTIR, FESEM, BET, UV-vis, and inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The obtained XRD pattern exhibited the phase purity of MIL-101 and its structural stability. The solid-phase diameter of the catalyst was observed to be ~ 270.76 ± 119.95 nm, while its gas adsorption data was indicative of a decrease in the specific surface area after the loading of ZnTPP. The ICP analysis displayed the amount of encapsulated Zn[TPP] (~ 17%) in MIL-101. The UV-vis confirmed the presence of Zn[TPP] in MIL-101 with the lack of any interferences or overlaps with the λ_max of methylene blue (MB) with the support. The dye removal of MB was investigated under dark conditions (adsorption) and UV light (photodegradation). The observed adsorption under dark conditions using Zn[TPP]@MIL-101 (99.27% yield) demonstrated a superior dye removal in comparison to the cases of photodegradation of MB by MIL-101 and Zn[TPP]@MIL-101 or adsorption by MIL-101. In conformity to the gathered results, [ZnTPP] was able to increase the adsorption capacity at pH = 7 at room temperature.

Host/Guest Nanostructured Photoanodes Integrated with Targeted Enhancement Strategies for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production from water splitting is a green technology that can solve the environmental and energy problems through converting solar energy into renewable hydrogen fuel. The construction of host/guest architecture in semiconductor photoanodes has proven to be an effective strategy to improve solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency dramatically. In host/guest photoanodes, the absorber layer is deposited onto a high-surface-area electron collector, resulting in a significant enhancements in light-harvesting as well as charge collection and separation efficiency. The present review aims to summarize and highlight recent state-of-the-art progresses in the architecture designing of host/guest photoanodes with integrated enhancement strategies, including i) light trapping effect; ii) optimization of conductive host scaffolds; iii) hierarchical structure engineering. The challenges and prospects for the future development of host/guest nanostructured photoanodes are also presented.

Synergistic Lewis acid and Pd active sites of metal–organic frameworks for highly efficient carbonylation of methyl nitrite to dimethyl carbonate

We for the first time systematically investigated a MOF UiO-66 based catalyst showing the synergistic effect of Lewis acid sites and Pd(ii) for highly efficient methyl nitrite (MN) carbonylation to dimethyl carbonate (DMC).

Novel optoelectronic metal organic framework material perylene tetracarboxylate magnesium: preparation and biosensing

The pursuit for improving photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances of organic materials remains an urgent need. Here, we have proposed an envision of the preparation the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with arenes to realize high photo-to-current conversion efficiency and excellent PEC performances. Magnesium 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid metal-organic frameworks (Mg-PTCA MOFs) were synthesized for the first time. The uniformly distributed and regular-shaped Mg-PTCA MOFs showed a much more stable and higher photocurrent than the single PTCA and its derivatives, which confirmed our hypothesis. A regenerated-biosensor was designed for microRNA analysis based on Mg-PTCA MOFs as a novel photoelectric material, target-triggered three-dimensional DNA Scaffold (3D-Sca) as an efficient signal amplifier, and gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) as quencher. The elaborately designed biosensor achieved ultrasensitive detection for miRNA 21 with a dynamic range from 10 aM to 10 pM and a detection limit of 2.8 aM. This biosensor showed good analytical performance in the extracts of different cancer cells, indicating the possibility for early diagnosis, timely staging assessment, and accurate prognostic judgment for diseases. The recommendable performances of Mg-PTCA MOFs highlight the significance of organic MOFs in PEC sensing.

Application in Anticounterfeiting for Multistimuli Smart Luminescent Materials Based on MOF-on-MOF

The generation of smart responsive materials that can perform multiple drastic optical outputs upon different triggers provides a good platform to encode and hide the information and create multilevel security. In this paper, a smart multiresponsive MOF-on-MOF material was reported using one MOF (HPU-14) as a platform to grow ZIF-8 on the outer layer, combining different emitter centers such as anthracene (ANT) and lanthanide ions (Ln³⁺) confined into two MOFs. Due to the existence of ANT in the pores of ZIF-8, this composite material can exhibit reversible photoswitching behavior under a 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) lamp and enable "resetting and reusing" dynamic anticounterfeiting application. Meanwhile, when treated by an acid/alkali gas, this material can also display reversible switching behavior under 254 nm UV irradiation, which is attributed to the loading of Ln³⁺ on HPU-14. We demonstrated that this excellent practical anticounterfeiting material can decipher the right information only by following a strict stimuli sequence. Therefore, this MOF-on-MOF material synthesis technology for sophisticated counterfeiters, which makes the protected information highly secure, could open a new way to design multilevel anticounterfeiting materials.

A Porous Metal-Organic Framework as an Electrochemical Sensing Platform for Highly Selective Adsorption and Detection of Bisphenols

The design of artificial receptors with a specific recognition function and enhanced selectivity is highly desirable in the electrochemical sensing field, which can be used for detection of environmental pollutants. In this facet, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featured adjustable porosities and specific host-guest recognition properties. Especially, the large hydrophobic cavity formed in the porous MOFs may become a potential artificial receptor. We herein designed a new porous MOF [Zn₂(L)(IPA)(H₂O)]·2DMF·2MeOH·3H₂O (Zn-L-IPA) by using a functionalized sulfonylcalix[4]arene (L¹) and isophthalic acid (H₂IPA) (DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide). The specific pore size and pore shape of Zn-L-IPA made it efficiently selective for absorption of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS). Therefore, a rapid, highly selective, and ultrasensitive electrochemical sensing platform Zn-L-IPA@GP/GCE was fabricated by using Zn-L-IPA as a host to recognize and absorb bisphenol guests (GP = graphite powder, GCE = glassy carbon electrode). Most strikingly, the extremely low detection limits were up to 3.46 and 0.17 nM for BPA and BPF, respectively, using the Zn-L-IPA@GP/GCE electrode. Furthermore, the "recognition and adsorption" mechanism was uncovered by density functional theory with the B3LYP function. This work offered a prospective strategy for selective absorption and detection of harmful bisphenols with the MOF-based porous material.

Recent progress in pristine MOF-based catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction

Among various kinds of materials that have been investigated as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has emerged as a promising material for electrocatalyzing these vital processes owing to their structural merits that integrate advantages of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts; however there is still big room for their improvement in terms of inferior activity and poor conductivity, as well as the ambiguity of real active sites. In this review, advanced strategies with the aim of solving the activity and conductivity problems are summarized as microstructure engineering and conductivity improvement, respectively. The structural evolution of some MOFs and their real active species has also been discussed. Finally, perspectives on the development of MOF materials for HER, OER and ORR electrocatalysis are provided.
