Intralayered Ostwald Ripening-Induced Self-Catalyzed Growth of CNTs on MXene for Robust Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Multifunctional TiN-MXene-Co@CNTs Networks as Sulfur/Lithium Host for High-Areal-Capacity Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The inevitable shuttling and slow redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) as well as the uncontrolled growth of Li dendrites have strongly limited the practical applications of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). To address these issues, we have innovatively constructed the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) encapsulated Co nanoparticles in situ grown on TiN-MXene nanosheets, denoted as TiN-MXene-Co@CNTs, which could serve simultaneously as both sulfur/Li host to kill "three birds with one stone" to (1) efficiently capture soluble LiPSs and expedite their redox conversion, (2) accelerate nucleation/decomposition of solid Li2S, and (3) induce homogeneous Li deposition. Benefiting from the synergistic effects, the TiN-MXene-Co@CNTs/S cathode with a sulfur loading of 2.5 mg cm-2 could show a high reversible specific capacity of 1129.1 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 C, and ultralong cycle life over 1000 cycles at 1.0 C. More importantly, it even achieves a high areal capacity of 6.3 mAh cm-2 after 50 cycles under a sulfur loading as high as 8.9 mg cm-2 and a low E/S ratio of 5.0 μL mg-1. Besides, TiN-MXene-Co@CNTs as Li host could deliver a stable Li plating/striping behavior over 1000 h.

Potassium Ion-Assisted Self-Assembled MXene-K-CNT Composite as High-Quality Sulfur-Loaded Hosts for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

We successfully synthesized hybrid MXene-K-CNT composites composed of alkalized two-dimensional (2D) metal carbide and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which were employed as host materials for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery cathodes. The unique three-dimensional (3D) intercalated structure through electrostatic interactions by K+ ions in conjunction with the scaffolding effect provided by CNTs effectively inhibited the self-stacking of MXene nanosheets, resulting in an enhanced specific surface area (SSA) and ion transport capability. Moreover, the addition of CNTs and in situ-grown TiO2 considerably improved the conductivity of the cathode material. K+ ion etching created a more hierarchical porous structure in MXene, which further enhanced the SSA. The 3D framework effectively confined S embedded between nanosheet layers and suppressed volume changes of the cathode composite during charging/discharging processes. This combination of CNTs and alkalized nanosheets functioned as a physical and chemical dual adsorption system for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). When subjected to a high current at 1.0C, S@MXene-K-0.5CNT with S-loaded of 1.2 mg cm-2 had an initial capacity of 919.6 mAh g-1 and capacity decay rate of merely 0.052% per cycle after 1000 cycles. Moreover, S@MXene-K-0.5CNT maintained good cycling stability even at a high current of up to 5.0C. These impressive results highlight the potential of alkalized 2D MXene nanosheets intercalated with CNTs as highly promising cathode materials for Li-S batteries. The study findings also have prospects for the development of next-generation Li-S batteries with high energy density and prolonged lifespans.

Elastic MXene conductive layers and electrolyte engineering enable robust potassium storage

The precisely engineered structures of materials greatly influence the manifestation of their properties. For example, in the process of alkali metal ion storage, a carefully designed structure capable of accommodating inserted and extracted ions will improve the stability of material cycling. The present study explores the uniform distribution of self-grown carbon nanotubes to provide structural support for the conductive and elastic MXene layers of Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs. Furthermore, a compatible electrolyte system has been optimized by analyzing the solvation structure and carefully regulating the component in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that the decomposition predominantly controlled by FSI- leads to the formation of a robust inorganic SEI layer enriched with KF, thus effectively inhibiting irreversible side reactions and major structural deterioration. Confirming our expectations, Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs exhibits an impressive reversible capacity of 260 mA h g-1, even after 2000 cycles at 500 mA g-1 in 1 M KFSI (DME), surpassing most MXene-based anodes reported for PIBs. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify the superior electronic conductivity and lower K+ diffusion energy barriers of the novel superstructure of Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs, thereby affirming the improved electrochemical kinetics. This study presents systematic evaluation methodologies for future research on MXene-based anodes in PIBs.

A Facilely Synthesized NiCo2S4 with Two Mutually Reinforcing Active Sites for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The shuttle effect and slow conversion kinetics of soluble polysulfides hinder the commercial application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). In this context, we propose a three-dimensional lamellar-stacked nanostructure of nickel cobalt sulfide (D-NiCo2S4) enriched with lattice defects by manipulating the cations in spinel sulfides. It has an obvious synergistic promotion mechanism for the adsorption and catalysis of lithium sulfides. Specifically, Ni3+ on tetrahedral (Td) sites with strong Ni-S covalency anchors LiPSs, whereas Co3+ on octahedral (Oh) sites promotes a highly efficient catalytic conversion of LiPSs, which is confirmed by experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Besides, the crystal defects and distortions in the lamellar region could expose more active sites and enhance the redox reaction kinetics of polysulfides. Hence, Li-S batteries with D-NiCo2S4@S as the cathode show outstanding cycle stability; upon cycling at 1 A/g, the battery achieves a high initial specific capacity of 1001.12 and 655.31 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles (decay rate as low as 0.05% per cycle), as well as a high initial areal capacity of 3.15 mAh cm-2 under high S loading (4.2 mg cm-2). This work provides a viable scheme for designing efficient bimetal sulfide catalysts and furnishes a rational strategy for constructing LSB cathodes with high specific capacity and high area capacity.

Regulating the PO4 and TiO6 Polyhedral Building Blocks in TiP2O7 Boosts the Potassium Ion Diffusion Kinetics

Achieving fast and durable potassiation/depotassiation of anode materials for potassium ion batteries (PIB) still remains an elusive yet fascinating goal. Herein, we challenge the conventional wisdom in synthesizing the TiP2O7 superstructure and report a nanocarbon coating on TiP2O7 (TiP2O7/C) using layered MXene as a Ti source to realize an effective tuning in the TiO6 and PO4 building blocks for boosting the K+ diffusion kinetics in PIB. Experimental investigations coupled with systematic theoretical simulations indicate that the interface interaction between TiP2O7 and coated nanocarbon could induce internal adjustment in individual Ti-O bonding and relieve the local distortions of TiO6 octahedra, which endows the TiP2O7/C with favorable regulation in a K+ hopping manner and significantly reduces the K+ diffusion barrier via the diffusion propagation along PO4 blocks with dominant coordination between O/P and K+. Consequently, the TiP2O7/C anode could retain 230 mA h g-1 even after 2200 long-term cycles with an ultralow degradation rate of 0.005%.

Electrostatic Self-Assembly of MXene on Ruthenium Dioxide-Modified Carbon Cloth for Electrochemical Detection of Kaempferol

A superior composite material consisting of MXene and ruthenium dioxide-modified carbon cloth is synthesized by pulsed laser deposition and electrostatic self-assembly, which is further utilized to construct a class of novel electrochemical (EC) sensors for kaempferol (KA) detection. The carbon-cloth-based electrodes modified by ruthenium dioxide and then MXene are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The EC process on the modified electrodes is analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, EC impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse voltammetry. It is found that positively charged RuO2 not only possesses the remarkable electrical conductivity and electrocatalysis activity but also hampers the restacking of MXene, which accordingly enhances the exposure of the active surface area and greatly boosts the electrocatalysis activity of the entire composite. Consequently, this newly developed composite-based EC sensor exhibits a high sensitivity, selectivity, and remarkable stability to detect KA with two linear ranges of 0.06-1 and 1-15 µM. The inferred limit of detection is 0.039 µM via differential pulse voltammetry. More importantly, this novel EC sensor is found to be applicable for detecting KA in practical traditional Chinese medicines.

Facile preparation of Ti3C2Tx sheets by selectively etching in a H2SO4/H2O2 mixture

MXenes and MXene-based composite materials have potential applications in a wide range of areas due to their unique physical and chemical characteristics. At present, it is still a major challenge to develop a simple, safe, and efficient route to prepare MXenes without using fluorinated etchants. Herein, we design a facile method to prepare Ti₃C₂T_x MXene sheets by selectively etching Ti₃AlC₂ powders in an aqueous diluted H₂SO₄ solution with H₂O₂ as an oxidant. In a system of H₂SO₄ and H₂O₂, an aqueous H₂SO₄ solution with a concentration of 6 mol/L is a strongly acidic medium with no volatility, and 30% H₂O₂ acts as a strong green oxidizer without harmful by-products. The experimental process is safe and convenient to conduct in a beaker under a water bath of 40°C. The etching process can be completed in 1 h under the air atmosphere conditions. The experimental results confirmed that the etched Ti₃AlC₂ powders can be successfully separated into Ti₃C₂T_x nanosheets under ultrasound treatment without using any intercalation agent. The relevant etching mechanism is may be attributed to the synergy effect of H₂SO₄ and H₂O₂, which triggers sequential selective etching of Al layers from the Ti₃AlC₂ phase. It may provide a new green way to prepare MXene-based materials without using toxic HF or HF-containing etchants.

Multi-Dimensional Composite Frame as Bifunctional Catalytic Medium for Ultra-Fast Charging Lithium-Sulfur Battery

The shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) between electrodes and slow reaction kinetics lead to extreme inefficiency and poor high current cycling stability, which limits the commercial application of Li-S batteries. Herein, the multi-dimensional composite frame has been proposed as the modified separator (MCCoS/PP) of Li-S battery, which is composed of CoS₂ nanoparticles on alkali-treated MXene nanosheets and carbon nanotubes. Both experiments and theoretical calculations show that bifunctional catalytic activity can be achieved on the MCCoS/PP separator. It can not only promote the liquid-solid conversion in the reduction process, but also accelerate the decomposition of insoluble Li₂S in the oxidation process. In addition, LiPSs shuttle effect has been inhibited without a decrease in lithium-ion transference numbers. Simultaneously, the MCCoS/PP separator with good LiPSs adsorption capability arouses redistribution and fixing of active substances, which is also beneficial to the rate performance and cycling stability. The Li-S batteries with the MCCoS/PP separator have a specific capacity of 368.6 mAh g^-1 at 20C, and the capacity decay per cycle is only 0.033% in 1000 cycles at 7C. Also, high area capacity (6.34 mAh cm^-2) with a high sulfur loading (7.7 mg cm^-2) and a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio (7.5 μL mg^-1) is achieved.

Fluorine-Free Fabrication of MXene via Photo-Fenton Approach for Advanced Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The mainstream synthesis method for MXene is using aqueous fluorine-containing acidic solutions to eliminate the A-element layers from their MAX phases. However, this strategy is environmentally hazardous and impairs the material performance (e.g., supercapacitor and Li-S batteries) owing to the presence of -F terminations. Herein, we exploit a low-temperature "soft chemistry" approach based on photo-Fenton (P.F.) reaction for the fabrication of F-free Ti₃C₂ (Ff-Ti₃C₂) with high purity of 95%. It is confirmed that the continuous generation of highly reactive oxygen species (HO^• and O₂^•- radicals) during the P.F. reaction weakens the metallic Ti-Al bonds in the MAX phase and promotes the formation of high concentration OH^- anions, which are conducive to the sequential topochemical deintercalation of Al layers. Moreover, the strengthened charge accumulation on the Ff-Ti₃C₂ surface creates rich electron "reservoirs" for actuating the Li-S chemistry, which not only strengthens the host-guest interactions but also propels the kinetics of the polysulfide conversion. Taking advantage of the superior mechanical robustness, better electrolyte wettability, and improved electrocatalytic activity, the resultant Ff-Ti₃C₂ can be used as an ideal sulfur host and Li-S chemistry mediator for advanced flexible Li-S batteries.

Low concentration electrolyte with non-solvating cosolvent enabling high-voltage lithium metal batteries

Developing low cost, yet high-voltage electrolyte is significant to improve the energy density and practicability of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Low concentration electrolyte has significant merits in terms of cost and viscosity; however, their poor compatibility with high-voltage LMBs hinders its applications. Here, we develop a diluted low concentration electrolyte by replacing solvating cosolvent with a non-solvating cosolvent to facilitate the interaction between BF₄ ^- and Li⁺, resulting in optimized interfacial chemistry and suppressed side reaction. Thus, the high-loading Li-LiCoO₂ full cells (20.4 mg cm^-2) deliver outstanding cycling stability and rate performance at a cutoff voltage of 4.6 V. More impressively, a Li-LiCoO₂ pouch cell achieves an energy density of more than 400 Wh kg^-1 under practical conditions with thin Li (50 μm) and lean electrolyte (2.7 g Ah^-1). This work provides a rational approach to design a low concentration electrolyte, which can be extended to other high voltage battery systems.

MXene/Carbon Nanotube Hybrids: Synthesis, Structures, Properties, and Applications

Since the successful preparation of few-layer transition metal carbides from three-dimensional MAX phases in 2011, MXenes (known as a family of layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides) have been intensively studied. Though MXenes have been adopted as active materials in many applications, issues including aggregation and restacking are likely to hamper their potential applications. In order to address these prevailing challenges, the concept of MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrids was proposed initially in 2015, where CNTs were incorporated as the spacers and conductive additives. Ever since, MXene/CNT hybrids with different architectures have been synthesized by a number of methods and applied in numerous fields. Herein, after the discussion about general synthesis approaches, architectures, and properties of the hybrids, this Review summarized the recent advances in the application of MXene/CNT hybrids in energy storage devices, sensors, electrocatalysis, electromagnetic interference shielding, and water treatment, in which the function of individual components was clarified. In the end, the current research trend in this field were discussed and several technical issues were highlighted along with some suggestions on future research directions.
