Identification of the Charge Transfer Channel in Cobalt Encapsulated Hollow Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Matrix@CdS Heterostructure for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Synergistic dual built-in electric fields in 1T-MoS2/Ni3S2/LDH for efficient electrocatalytic overall water splitting reactions

Designing cost-effective electrocatalysts for water decomposition is crucial for achieving environmental-friendly hydrogen production. A transition metal sulfide/hydroxide electrocatalyst (1T-MoS2/Ni3S2/LDH) with double heterogeneous interfaces was developed through a two-step hydrothermal assisted electrodeposition method. The presence of the two built-in electric fields not only accelerated the charge transfer at the interface, but also enhanced the adsorption of the reactants and intermediate groups, and therefore improved the reaction rate and overall catalytic performance. The results suggest that the 1T-MoS2/Ni3S2/LDH catalysts display exceptional electrocatalytic reactivity. Under alkaline conditions, the overpotential of the electrocatalyst was 187 (η50) mV for OER and 104 (η10) mV for HER. Furthermore, the two-electrode system assembled by the electrocatalyst needs only a voltage of 1.55 V to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Our result provides a simple and effective methodical approach to the design of dual heterogeneous interfacial electrocatalysts.

Carbon-coated nickel phosphide enhances efficiently electron transfer of cadmium sulfide for photocatalytic hydrogen production

The capacitance of a co-catalyst can be likened to a "double-edged sword". Α co-catalysts with high capacitance can store photoexcited electrons, thereby facilitating charge separation within the host catalyst. However, this property simultaneously restricts electron release. Both effects are enhanced with an increasing capacitance value, implying that excessively high capacitance can significantly hinder the photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production reaction. Herein, we have designed a metal-organic framework (MOF) -derived carbon-coated nickel phosphide (C-Ni5P4) as the co-catalyst of cadmium sulfide (CdS). When C-Ni5P4 and CdS are closely interconnected, electrons spontaneously migrate from CdS to C-Ni5P4 under irradiation due to the higher work function (WF) of C-Ni5P4 compared to CdS. Most importantly, although the WF of C-Ni5P4 is 0.1 eV lower than that of Ni5P4, its specific capacitance (1.2 mF/cm2) is also lower than that of Ni5P4 (1.3 mF/cm2). This difference dramatically promotes electron release. Thereby exerting a strong positive effect on capacitance catalysis. Therefore, 7% C-Ni5P4/CdS exhibits exceptional cyclic stability and has a remarkably high activity level of 12283 μmol/h/g and 3.8 times as many as 3.0 %Ni5P4/CdS. This study provides a theoretical basis for the advancement of photocatalysts with high efficiency in H2 production and is expected to be applied in other fields of photocatalysis.

Tailoring Advanced CdS Anisotropy-Driven Charge Spatial Vectorial Separation and Migration via In Situ Dual Co-Catalyst Synergistic Layout

Tailoring advanced anisotropy-driven efficient separation and migration of photogenerated carriers is a pivotal stride toward enhancing photocatalytic activity. Here, CdS-MoS2 binary photocatalysts are tailored into a dumbbell shape by leveraging the rod-shaped morphology of CdS and employing an in situ tip-induction strategy. To further enhance the photocatalytic activity, an in situ photo-deposition strategy is incorporated to cultivate MnOx particles on the dumbbell-shaped CdS-MoS2. The in situ deposition of MnOx effectively isolated the oxidatively active sites on the CdS surface, emphasizing the reductively active crystalline face of CdS, specifically the (002) face. Benefiting from its robust activity as a reduction active site, MoS2 adeptly captures photogenerated electrons, facilitating the reduction of H+ to produce hydrogen. The anisotropically driven separation of CdS photogenerated carriers markedly mitigates the Coulomb force or binding force of the photogenerated electrons, thus promoting a smoother migration toward the active site for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen evolution rate of 35MnOx-CdS-MoS2-3 surpasses that of CdS by nearly an order of magnitude, achieving a quantum efficiency of 22.30% at 450 nm. Under simulated solar irradiation, it attains a rate of 42.86 mmol g-1 h-1. This work imparts valuable insights for the design of dual co-catalysts, anisotropy-driven spatial vectorial charge separation and migration, and the analysis of migration pathways of photogenerated carriers.

Advances in zeolitic-imidazolate-framework-based catalysts for photo-/electrocatalytic water splitting, CO2 reduction and N2 reduction applications

Harnessing electrical or solar energy for the renewable production of value-added fuels and chemicals through catalytic processes (such as photocatalysis and electrocatalysis) is promising to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Owing to the large number of highly accessible active sites, highly porous structure, and charge separation/transfer ability, as well as excellent stability against chemical and electrochemical corrosion, zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)-based catalysts have attracted significant attention. Strategic construction of heterojunctions, and alteration of the metal node and the organic ligand of the ZIFs effectively regulate the binding energy of intermediates and the reaction energy barriers that allow tunable catalytic activity and selectivity of a product during reaction. Focusing on the currently existing critical issues of insufficient kinetics for electron transport and selective generation of ideal products, this review starts from the characteristics and physiochemical advantages of ZIFs in catalytic applications, then introduces promising regulatory approaches for advancing the kinetic process in emerging CO2 reduction, water splitting and N2 reduction applications, before proposing perspective modification directions.

Dual interfacing with metallic cobalt boosts the electron shuttle of CdS-carbide nanoassemblies

Harnessing accelerated interfacial redox, thus boosting charge separation, is of great importance in photocatalytic solar hydrogen generation. In effect, nanoassembling non-noble metallic phases in CdS-based systems and elucidating their role in photocatalysis hold the key to eventually boosting electron shuttle in the field. Here we combine an efficient in-situ exsoluted metallic Co0 nanoparticles on a carbides matrix (CMG) with CdS (CdS@CoCMG) for photogeneration of hydrogen. The metallic cobalt phase exhibits strong binding at the CdS-carbide dual interfaces, forming the accelerated "electron converter" mechanism validated by charge transfer kinetics and achieving two orders of magnitude faster hydrogen production (44.42 mmol g-1 h-1) relative to CdS (0.43 mmol g-1 h-1). We propose that the unique catalyst configuration enable the directional electron-relay photocatalysis via harnessing interfaces between Co0 phase, carbides, and CdS clusters, which eventually boosts the redox process and charge separation of the integrated system, leading to high H2 production rates in the suspension.

Hollow Nanoreactors for Controlled Photocatalytic Behaviors: Fundamental Theory, Structure-Performance Relationship, and Catalytic Advantages

Hollow nanoreactors (HoNRs) have regarded as an attractive catalytic material for photocatalysis due to their exceptional capabilities in enhancing light harvesting, facilitating charge separation and transfer, and optimizing surface reactions. Developing novel HoNRs offers new options to realize controllable catalytic behavior. However, the catalytic mechanism of photocatalysis occurring in HoNRs has not yet been fully revealed. Against this backdrop, this review elaborates on three aspects: 1) the fundamental theoretical insights of HoNRs-driven photocatalytic kinetics; 2) structure-performance relationship of HoNRs to photocatalysis; 3) catalytic advantages of HoNRs in photocatalytic applications. Specifically, the review focuses on the fundamental theories of HoNRs for photocatalysis and their structural advantages for strengthening light scattering, promoting charge separation and transfer, and facilitating surface reaction kinetics, and the relationship between key structural parameters of HoNRs and their photocatalytic performance is in-depth discussed. Also, future prospects and challenges are proposed. It is anticipated that this review paper will pave the way for forthcoming investigations in the realm of HoNRs for photocatalysis.

Interfacial effect between Ni2P/CdS for simultaneously heightening photocatalytic hydrogen production and lignocellulosic biomass photorefining

Photorefining of biomass is increasingly recognized as a pivotal technology for the simultaneous production of hydrogen and value-added chemicals. The intrinsic recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass puts high demands on the rational design of bifunctional photocatalyst. Herein, Ni2P/CdS with a strong interfacial effect in this work was designed to overcome lignocellulosic biomass photorefining. The strong interfacial effect between Ni2P and CdS not only improved the light absorbance, but also optimized the spatial redistribution of photogenerated electrons and holes. Therefore, Ni2P/CdS exhibited an unprecedented H2 evolution activity (ca. 199.7 mmol·h-1·g-1) in the presence of lactic acid as the traditional sacrificial agent. Considerable H2 generation was also achieved in the presence of lignin (ca. 322.8 μmol·h-1·g-1), cellulose (ca. 534.3 μmol·h-1·g-1) and hemicellulose (ca. 382.2 μmol·h-1·g-1) as the electron donor respectively. Theoretical calculation results indicated that establishing the interfacial effect between Ni2P and CdS optimized their work functions. This optimization fosters improved the redistribution between electrons and holes, as a result, photocatalytic hydrogen production from biomass solution was greatly enhanced. Significantly, Ni2P/CdS showed dual functionalities to produce H2 and value-added compounds from raw biomass directly. This present work demonstrates the potential of raw biomass photorefining through astutely designing photocatalysts.

Constructing built-in electric field via ruthenium/cerium dioxide Mott-Schottky heterojunction for highly efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen production

Ensuring the consumption rate of noble metals while guaranteeing satisfactory hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance at different pH values is imperative to the development of Ru-based catalysts. Herein, we design a Mott-Schottky electrocatalyst (Ru/CeO2) with a built-in electric field (BEF) based on density functional theory (DFT). The Ru/CeO2 achieves the criterion current density of 10 mA cm-2 at overpotentials of 55 mV, 80 mV, and 120 mV in alkaline, acidic and neutral media, respectively. Both theoretical calculations and experimental analysis confirm that the improved HER activity in the Ru/CeO2 catalyst could be due to the successful construction of BEF at the interface between the prepared Ru clusters and CeO2. Under the action of BEF, the electron-deficient Ru atoms can optimize the adsorption energy of H* and H2O and thus promote HER kinetics. Furthermore, the Ru/CeO2 catalyst delivers a power density of approximately 94.5 mW cm-2 in alkaline-acidic Zn-H2O cell applications while maintaining good H2 production stability. In this work, we optimize the electrocatalytic performance of the Ru/CeO2 catalyst through examination of the interfacial BEF electrical charge, which combines hydrogen production with power generation and provides a promising method for sustainable energy conversion.

Construction of [NbO]6-x -xS Structure to Change Charge Density and Regulate Spontaneous Polarization to Achieve Efficient Pyro-Photo-Electric Water Splitting System of NaNbO3

Pyroelectric materials in the field of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting still face the problems of difficult low spontaneous polarization intensity and excessive carrier recombination. Based on the above problems, we altered the interaction between S-Nb-S in the [NbO]6-x -xS structure, and the constructed [NbO]6-x -xS structure achieved the regulation of charge density change and spontaneous polarization. The results show that under the stimulation of light and temperature fluctuations, the current density of the NS-4 photoanode is as high as 0.574 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE , which is about 1.59 times higher than the pure NaNbO3 current density value, and the NS -4 photoanode achieves IPCE value of 16.08 %. The first-principles density-functional theory calculations (DFT) reveal the principle of the [NbO]6-x -xS structure for the suppression function of the carrier recombination and the improvement function of the pyroelectric effect. The analysis shows that the S-doping leads to the weakening of S-Nb-S interactions in the [NbO]6-x -xS structure, which improves the pyroelectric effect and suppresses the photo/pyro-generated carrier recombination, and effectively enhances the performance of the pyro-photo-electric synergistic water splitting system. This work promotes the development of pyroelectric materials in the field of photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Construction of Core-shell Sb2 s3 @Cds Nanorod with Enhanced Heterointerface Interaction for Chromium-Containing Wastewater Treatment

How to collaboratively reduce Cr(VI) and break Cr(III) complexes is a technical challenge to solve chromium-containing wastewater (CCW) pollution. Solar photovoltaic (SPV) technology based on semiconductor materials is a potential strategy to solve this issue. Sb2 S3 is a typical semiconductor material with total visible-light harvesting capacity, but its large-sized structure highly aggravates disordered photoexciton migration, accelerating the recombination kinetics and resulting low-efficient photon utilization. Herein, the uniform mesoporous CdS shell is in situ formed on the surface of Sb2 S3 nanorods (NRs) to construct the core-shell Sb2 S3 @CdS heterojunction with high BET surface area and excellent near-infrared light harvesting capacity via a surface cationic displacement strategy, and density functional theory thermodynamically explains the breaking of SbS bonds and formation of CdS bonds according to the bond energy calculation. The SbSCd bonding interaction and van der Waals force significantly enhance the stability and synergy of Sb2 S3 /CdS heterointerface throughout the entire surface of Sb2 S3 NRs, promoting the Sb2 S3 -to-CdS electron transfer due to the formation of built-in electric field. Therefore, the optimized Sb2 S3 @CdS catalyst achieves highly enhanced simulated sunlight-driven Cr(VI) reduction (0.154 min-1 ) and decomplexation of complexed Cr(III) in weakly acidic condition, resulting effective CCW treatment under co-action of photoexcited electrons and active radicals. This study provides a high-performance heterostructured catalyst for effective CCW treatment by SPV technology.

CdS Nanoparticles Supported by Cobalt@Carbon-Derived MOFs for the Improved Adsorption and Photodegradation of Ciprofloxacin

The design and synthesis of efficient photocatalysts that promote the degradation of organic pollutants in water have attracted extensive attention in recent years. In this work, CdS nanoparticles are grown in situ on Co@C derived from metal-organic frameworks. The resulting hierarchical CdS/Co@C nanostructures are evaluated in terms of their adsorption and photocatalytic ciprofloxacin degradation efficiency under visible-light irradiation. The results show that, apart from offering a large surface area (55.69 m²·g^-1), the prepared material can effectively suppress the self-agglomeration of CdS and enhance the absorption of visible light. The CdS/Co@C-7 composite containing 7% wt Co@C has the highest photodegradation rate, and its activity is approximately 4.4 times greater than that of CdS alone. Moreover, this composite exhibits remarkable stability after three successive cycles of photocatalysis. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is largely ascribed to the rapid separation of electron-hole pairs and the effective electron transfer between CdS and Co@C, which is confirmed via electrochemical experiments and photoluminescence spectra. The active substance capture experiment and the electron spin resonance technique show that h⁺ is the main active entity implicated in the degradation of CIP, and accordingly, a possible mechanism of CIP photocatalytic degradation over CdS/Co@C is proposed. In general, this work presents a new perspective on designing novel photocatalysts that promote the degradation of organic pollutants in water.

Hollow Spherical Pd/CdS/NiS with Carrier Spatial Separation for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Inspired by the unique properties of the three-dimensional hollow nanostructures in the field of photocatalysis, as well as the combination of co-catalyst, porous hollow spherical Pd/CdS/NiS photocatalysts are prepared by stepwise synthesis. The results show that the Schottky junction between Pd and CdS accelerates the transport of photogenerated electrons, while a p-n junction between NiS and CdS traps the photogenerated holes. As co-catalysts, the Pd nanoparticles and the NiS are loaded inside and outside the hollow CdS shell layer, respectively, which combines with the particular characteristic of the hollow structure, resulting in a spatial carrier separation effect. Under the synergy of the dual co-catalyst loading and hollow structure, the Pd/CdS/NiS has favorable stability. Its H₂ production under visible light is significantly increased to 3804.6 μmol/g/h, representing 33.4 times more than that of pure CdS. The apparent quantum efficiency is 0.24% at 420 nm. A feasible bridge for the development of efficient photocatalysts is offered by this work.

Construction of ZnIn2 S4 /CdS/PdS S-Scheme Heterostructure for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Production

It is facing a tremendous challenge to develop the desirable hybrids for photocatalytic H₂ generation by integrating the advantages of a single semiconductor. Herein, an all-sulfide ZnIn₂ S₄ /CdS/PdS heterojunction is constructed for the first time, where CdS and PdS nanoparticles anchor in the spaces of ZnIn₂ S₄ micro-flowers due to the confinement effects. The morphology engineering can guarantee rapid charge transfer owing to the short carrier migration distances and the luxuriant reactive sites provided by ZnIn₂ S₄ . The S-scheme mechanism between ZnIn₂ S₄ and CdS assisted by PdS cocatalyst is testified by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), where the electrons and holes move in reverse driven by work function difference and built-in electric field at the interfaces. The optimal ZnIn₂ S₄ /CdS/PdS performs a glaring photocatalytic activity of 191.9 µmol h^-1 (10 mg of catalyst), and the largest AQE (apparent quantum efficiency) can reach a high value of 26.26%. This work may afford progressive tactics to design multifunctional photocatalysts.

Construction of a heterojunction with fast charge transport channels for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution via a synergistic strategy of Co-doping and crystal plane modulation

Carrier spatial separation efficiency and active electron density are the key factors affecting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. Heterojunction catalysts with fast charge separation and directed electron transport systems were successfully prepared by a synergistic modification strategy of transition metal (Co) doping and crystal plane modulation. The optimized electronic structure and enhanced reaction kinetics enabled unidirectional electron transfer. Photocatalytic results show that CdS(002)/Co-C₃N₄ exhibits remarkable hydrogen evolution activity (991.2 μmol h^-1 g^-1) in the absence of a co-catalyst, which is 37.0 and 3.4 times higher than that of C₃N₄ (26.8 μmol h^-1 g^-1) and Co-C₃N₄ (294.6 μmol h^-1 g^-1), respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the enhanced catalytic activity of CdS(002)/Co-C₃N₄ is attributed to the reduced electron-hole recombination rate and the increased electron density at the active site. This work provides a new idea for the design of photocatalysts with directed charge transport channels from the perspective of re-optimizing heterojunctions.

Defect Engineering Modulated Iron Single Atoms with Assist of Layered Clay for Enhanced Advanced Oxidation Processes

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) feature maximum atomic utilization efficiency; however, the loading amount, dispersibility, synthesis cost, and regulation of the electronic structure are factors that need to be considered in water treatment. In this study, kaolinite, a natural layered clay mineral, is applied as the support for g-C₃ N₄ and single Fe atoms (FeSA-NGK). The FeSA-NGK composite exhibits an impressive degradation performance toward the target pollutant (>98% degradation rate in 10 min), and catalytic stability across consecutive runs (90% reactivity maintained after three runs in a fluidized-bed catalytic unit) under peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/visible light (Vis) synergetic system. The introduction of kaolinite promotes the loading amount of single Fe atoms (2.57 wt.%), which is a 14.2% increase compared to using a bare catalyst without kaolinite, and improved the concentration of N vacancies, thereby optimizing the regulation of the electronic structure of the single Fe atoms. It is discovered that the single Fe atoms successfully occupied five coordinated N atoms and combined with a neighboring N vacancy. Consequently, this regulated the local electronic structure of single Fe atoms, which drives the electrons of N atoms to accumulate on the Fe centers. This study opens an avenue for the design of clay-based SACs for water purification.

Lattice Strain and Schottky Junction Dual Regulation Boosts Ultrafine Ruthenium Nanoparticles Anchored on a N-Modified Carbon Catalyst for H2 Production

Ruthenium-based materials are considered great promising candidates to replace Pt-based catalysts for hydrogen production in alkaline conditions. Herein, we adopt a facile method to rationally design a neoteric Schottky catalyst in which uniform ultrafine ruthenium nanoparticles featuring lattice compressive stress are supported on nitrogen-modified carbon nanosheets (Ru NPs/NC) for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Lattice strain and Schottky junction dual regulation ensures that the Ru NPs/NC catalyst with an appropriate nitrogen content displays superb H₂ evolution in alkaline media. Particularly, Ru NPs/NC-900 with 1.3% lattice compressive strain displays attractive activity and durability for the HER with a low overpotential of 19 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The in situ X-ray absorption fine structure measurements indicate that the low-valence Ru nanoparticle with shrinking Ru-Ru bond acts as catalytic active site during the HER process. Furthermore, multiple spectroscopy analysis and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the lattice strain and Schottky junction dual regulation tunes the electron density and hydrogen adsorption of the active center, thus enhancing the HER activity. This strategy provides a novel concept for the design of advanced electrocatalysts for H₂ production.

Defected tungsten disulfide decorated CdS nanorods with covalent heterointerfaces for boosted photocatalytic H2 generation

Owing to their intrinsic and pronounced charge carrier transport when facing the formidable challenge of inhibiting severe surface charge recombination, one-dimensional (1D) CdS nanostructures are promising for advancing high-yield hydrogen production. We herein demonstrate an efficient strategy of boosting interfacial carrier separation by heterostructuring 1D CdS with defective WS₂. This process yields solid covalent interfaces for high flux carrier transfer that differ distinctively from those reported structures with physical contacts. As a nonnoble cocatalyst, WS₂ can accept photogenerated electrons from CdS, and the sulfur vacancies existing at its edges can effectively trap electrons as active sites for H₂ evolution. Moreover, due to its strong negative property, the H⁺ from the aqueous solution can gather around WS₂. WS₂ possesses a lower reaction barrier than CdS, which expedites the kinetic process for the reaction. The optimized sample exhibits a high photocatalytic H₂ evolution rate of 183.4 µmol/h (10 mg photocatalyst), which is as far as we know among the top in the records for CdS-based photocatalysts. We believe this present work will be inspiring in addressing the interfacial charge carrier transfer by constructing covalent heterointerfaces.

Dispersible CdS1-xSex solid-solution nanocrystal photocatalysts: Photoinduced self-transformation synthesis and enhanced hydrogen-evolution activity

Modulating the electronic structure of Cadmium sulfide (CdS) by non-metallic elements to produce solid-solution photocatalysts serves as a potential route to improve its performance of photocatalytic hydrogen (H₂) evolution. However, exploring an effective synthetic route of CdS-based solid solution is still a great challenge. Herein, the CdS_1-xSe_x solid-solution nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by an accessible photoinduced self-transformation route, including the direct formation of dispersible CdS_1-x(SeS)_x and the in situ self-transformation of selenosulfide ((SeS)^2-) to Se^2- by photoexcited electrons. The prepared CdS_1-xSe_x solid-solution photocatalysts possess a small crystallite size of ca. 5 nm and their bandgaps can be easily tuned in a wide range of 1.84-2.28 eV by tailoring the mole ratio of Se/S. The resultant CdS_0.90Se_0.10 solid-solution photocatalyst realizes the highest H₂-production tempo of 94.6 μmol·h^-1, which is 1.6 folds higher than that of CdS. The experimental and theoretical studies supported that the incorporation of Se atoms could not only narrow the bandgap value to reinforce visible-light absorption, but also tune its electronic structure to optimize interfacial H₂-evolution dynamics, thus achieving an efficient photocatalytic H₂-production rate of the dispersible CdS_1-xSe_x solid solution. This study may deliver advanced inspirations for optimizing the electronic structure of photocatalysts towards sustainable H₂ production.

Self-Assembled Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework/CdS Hollow Microspheres with Efficient Charge Separation for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Enhanced interfacial charge separation is of great importance to high-efficiency photocatalytic hydrogen production. Herein, we successfully fabricated novel ZIF-67/CdS hollow sphere (HS) and ZIF-8/CdS HS heterostructures through an in situ self-assembly process, in which ZIF-67 and ZIF-8 are closely coated on CdS HSs to form "double-shell"-like structures. This hierarchical heterostructure with porous outer layers on the surface of CdS HSs can expose accessible active sites and possess close contact. Upon visible-light illumination, the optimal proportion of ZIF-67/CdS HS displays a hydrogen generation rate of 1721 μmol g^-1 h^-1, which is 11.9 and 3.1 times higher than that of a pure CdS HS (145 μmol g^-1 h^-1) and ZIF-8/CdS HS (555 μmol g^-1 h^-1), respectively. The proposed photocatalytic mechanism is explored: ZIF-8/CdS HS follows the type-II mechanism, and ZIF-67/CdS HS follows the Z-scheme mechanism. The reason for the higher photocatalytic activity of ZIF-67/CdS HS is that ZIF-67 not merely with a porous structure facilitates the diffusion of H₂ gas, but with a well-matched band structure promotes charge transfer and separation.

Synergetic metal-semiconductor interaction: Single-atomic Pt decorated CdS nano-photocatalyst for highly water-to-hydrogen conversion

Solar driven water-to-hydrogen conversion is a promising technology for the typical sustainable production mode, so increasing efforts are being devoted to exploit high-performance photocatalytic materials. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) is widely used to prepare highly active photocatalysts owing to its merits of broadband-light harvesting and feasible band structure. However, the slow photo-carriers' migration in CdS body structure generally results in high-frequency carriers recombination, which leads to unsatisfied photoactivity. Metallic single-atom surface decoration is an effective method to build the strong metal-support interaction for promotion of photo-carriers' migration. Herein, a simple light-induced reduction procedure was proposed to decorate single-atomic Pt on the surface of CdS nanoparticles for highly photocatalytic HER activity. Research showed that the synergetic metal (Pt)-semiconductor (CdS) interaction significantly promoted the body-to-surface (BTS) photo-carriers' migration of CdS, thereby the high light-to-fuel conversion efficiency (AQY_{500 nm} = 25.70%) and 13.5-fold greater simulated sunlight driven HER rate of bare CdS was achieved by this CdS-Pt nano-photocatalyst. Based on the photo-electrochemical analysis and density functional theory calculations, the remarkably improved HER photoactivity can be attributed to the enhanced light-harvesting, promoted BTS electron migration and reduced reaction energy barriers. This study provides a facile procedure to obtain CdS based photocatalyst with metallic single-atom sites for high-performance HER photocatalysis.
