Assembly of Cobalt Layered Double Hydroxide on Cuprous Phosphide Nanowire with Strong Built-In Potential for Accelerated Overall Water Splitting

In-situ stabilization of metal-nitride sites in sprouted 2D cMOF@LDHs hetero-nano petals on metaloxynitrides nanostems for enhanced water splitting

Addressing the challenges of enhancing water-splitting efficiency necessitates the exploration and rational design of high-performance and durable electrocatalysts with appealing nanoarchitectures. In this study, we present the design and fabrication of conjugated cMOF/LDH hetero-nano petals decorated with monodispersed Metal-N sites, which are uniformly shelled over tungsten oxynitride (WNO) nanowire arrays to form a unique core-shell architecture. For this rational engineering, WNO nanowire arrays were grown on carbon cloth. Then, a thin-layered Ru-Co-Fe layered double hydroxide (RuCoFe/LDH) was deposited around these wires, resulting in a highly porous three-dimensional array of hierarchical hetero RuCoFe-LDHs@WNO-NWs core-shell nanowires (RuCoFe-NSs@WNO-NWs). Subsequently, the linkers coordinated with the RuCoFe-LDH nanosheets and transformed them in-situ into the RuCoFe-cMOF nano petals (RuCoFe-NPs@WNO-NWs). Notably, the linker's amino groups functioned as hooks for precisely anchoring and stabilizing metal sites, forming the metal nitride (M-N) moieties. Interestingly, the designed bi-functional catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activities for both OER (230 mV @ 10 mAcm-2) and HER (49 mV @ 10 mAcm-2) in an alkaline medium. Additionally, an electrolyzer cell employing Ru-CoFe-NPs@WNO-NWs as a bi-functional electrocatalyst required 1.49V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2. These remarkable catalytic performances can be attributed to several key factors, including opulent exposed active sites, an efficient charge/mass transport pathway, an optimized electronic structure, and an interfacial synergy effect. Hence, this study provides a new perspective for the design of efficient bi-functional electrocatalysts for use in the energy related electrochemical devices.

Construction of Cobalt Porphyrin-Modified Cu2O Nanowire Array as a Tandem Electrocatalyst for Enhanced CO2 Reduction to C2 Products

Here, the molecule-modified Cu-based array is first constructed as the self-supporting tandem catalyst for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to C2 products. The modification of cuprous oxide nanowire array on copper mesh (Cu2O@CM) with cobalt(II) tetraphenylporphyrin (CoTPP) molecules is achieved via a simple liquid phase method. The systematical characterizations confirm that the formation of axial coordinated Co-O-Cu bond between Cu2O and CoTPP can significantly promote the dispersion of CoTPP molecules on Cu2O and the electrical properties of CoTPP-Cu2O@CM heterojunction array. Consequently, as compared to Cu2O@CM array, the optimized CoTPP-Cu2O@CM sample as electrocatalyst can realize the 2.08-fold C2 Faraday efficiency (73.2% vs 35.2%) and the 2.54-fold current density (‒52.9 vs ‒20.8 mA cm-2) at ‒1.1 V versus RHE in an H-cell. The comprehensive performance is superior to most of the reported Cu-based materials in the H-cell. Further study reveals that the CoTPP adsorption on Cu2O can restrain the hydrogen evolution reaction, improve the coverage of *CO intermediate, and maintain the existence of Cu(I) at low potential.

Electron Accumulation Induced by Electron Injection-Incomplete Discharge on NiFe LDH for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Optimizing the local electronic structure of electrocatalysts can effectively lower the energy barrier of electrochemical reactions, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic activity. However, the intrinsic contribution of the electronic effect is still experimentally unclear. In this work, the electron injection-incomplete discharge approach to achieve the electron accumulation (EA) degree on the nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is proposed, to reveal the intrinsic contribution of EA toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Such NiFe LDH with EA effect results in only 262 mV overpotential to reach 50 mA cm-2, which is 51 mV-lower compared with pristine NiFe LDH (313 mV), and reduced Tafel slope of 54.8 mV dec-1 than NiFe LDH (107.5 mV dec-1). Spectroscopy characterizations combined with theoretical calculations confirm that the EA near concomitant Vo can induce a narrower energy gap and lower thermodynamic barrier to enhance OER performance. This study clarifies the mechanism of the EA effect on OER activity, providing a direct electronic structure modulation guideline for effective electrocatalyst design.

Built-In Electric Field Boosted Overall Water Electrolysis at Large Current Density for the Heterogeneous Ir/CoMoO4 Nanosheet Arrays

Advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts are essential for propelling overall water splitting (OWS) progress. Herein, relying on the obvious difference in the work function of Ir (5.44 eV) and CoMoO4 (4.03 eV) and the constructed built-in electric field (BEF), an Ir/CoMoO4/NF heterogeneous catalyst, with ultrafine Ir nanoclusters (1.8 ± 0.2 nm) embedded in CoMoO4 nanosheet arrays on the surface of nickel foam skeleton, is reported. Impressively, the Ir/CoMoO4/NF shows remarkable electrocatalytic bifunctionality toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), especially at large current densities, requiring only 13 and 166 mV to deliver 10 and 1000 mA cm-2 for HER and 196 and 318 mV for OER. Furthermore, the Ir/CoMoO4/NF||Ir/CoMoO4/NF electrolyzer demands only 1.43 and 1.81 V to drive 10 and 1000 mA cm-2 for OWS. Systematical theoretical calculations and tests show that the formed BEF not only optimizes interfacial charge distribution and the Fermi level of both Ir and CoMoO4, but also reduces the Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*, from 0.25 to 0.03 eV) and activation energy (from 13.6 to 8.9 kJ mol-1) of HER, the energy barrier (from 3.47 to 1.56 eV) and activation energy (from 21.1 to 13.9 kJ mol-1) of OER, thereby contributing to the glorious electrocatalytic bifunctionality.

Improved Urea Oxidation Performance via Interface Electron Redistributions of the NiFe(OH)x/MnO2/NF p-p Heterojunction

The development of highly efficient urea oxidation reaction (UOR) electrocatalysts is the key to simultaneously achieving green hydrogen production and the treatment of urea-containing wastewater. Ni-based electrocatalysts are expected to replace precious metal catalysts for UOR because of their high activity and low cost. However, the construction of Ni-based electrocatalysts that can synergistically enhance UOR still needs further in-depth study. In this study, highly active electrocatalysts of NiFe(OH)x/MnO2 p-p heterostructures are constructed on nickel foam (NF) by electrodeposition (NiFe(OH)x/MnO2/NF), illustrating the effect of electronic structure changes at heterogeneous interfaces on UOR and revealing the catalytic mechanism of UOR. The NiFe(OH)x/MnO2/NF only needs 1.364 V (vs Reversible Hydrogen Electrode, RHE) to reach 10 mA cm-2 for UOR. Structural characterizations and theoretical calculations indicate that energy gap leads to directed charge transfer and redistribution at the heterojunction interface, forming electron-rich (MnO2) and electron-poor (NiFe(OH)x) regions. This enhances the catalyst's adsorption of urea and reaction intermediates, reduces thermodynamic barriers during the UOR process, promotes the formation of Ni3+ phases at lower potentials, and thus improves UOR performance. This work provides a new idea for the development of Ni-based high-efficiency UOR electrocatalysts.

Regulating Hydrogen/Oxygen Species Adsorption via Built-in Electric Field -Driven Electron Transfer Behavior at the Heterointerface for Efficient Water Splitting

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) plays a crucial role in the realization of a hydrogen economy. The design and development of efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are pivotal to achieving high-efficiency AWE. Herein, WC1-x/Mo2C nanoparticle-embedded carbon nanofiber (WC1-x/Mo2C@CNF) with abundant interfaces is successfully designed and synthesized. Benefiting from the electron transfer behavior from Mo2C to WC1-x, the electrocatalysts of WC1-x/Mo2C@CNF exhibit superior HER and OER performance. Furthermore, when employed as anode and cathode in membrane electrode assembly devices, the WC1-x/Mo2C@CNF catalyst exhibits enhanced catalytic activity and remarkable stability for 100 hours at a high current density of 200 mA cm-2 towards overall water splitting. The experimental characterizations and theoretical simulation reveal that modulation of the d-band center for WC1-x/Mo2C@CNF, achieved through the asymmetric charge distribution resulting from the built-in electric field induced by work function, enables optimization of adsorption strength for hydrogen/oxygen intermediates, thereby promoting the catalytic kinetics for overall water splitting. This work provides promising strategies for designing highly active catalysts in energy conversion fields.

Schottky Barrier-Based Built-In Electric Field for Enhanced Tumor Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy's antitumor efficacy is hindered by the inefficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to the photogenerated electron-hole pairs recombination of photosensitizers (PS). Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient PSs with enhanced carrier dynamics. Herein, we designed Schottky junctions composed of cobalt tetroxide and palladium nanocubes (Co3O4@Pd) with a built-in electric field as effective PS. The built-in electric field enhanced photogenerated charge separation and migration, resulting in the generation of abundant electron-hole pairs and allowing effective production of ROS. Thanks to the built-in electric field, the photocurrent intensity and carrier lifetime of Co3O4@Pd were approximately 2 and 3 times those of Co3O4, respectively. Besides, the signal intensity of hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen increased to 253.4% and 135.9%, respectively. Moreover, the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Pd also enhanced the photothermal conversion efficiency of Co3O4@Pd to 40.50%. In vitro cellular level and in vivo xenograft model evaluations demonstrated that Co3O4@Pd could generate large amounts of ROS, trigger apoptosis, and inhibit tumor growth under near-infrared laser irradiation. Generally, this study reveals the contribution of the built-in electric field to improving photodynamic performance and provides new ideas for designing efficient inorganic PSs.

Oxalic Acid-Assisted Vacancy Engineering Promotes Iron-Copper Sulfide Nanosheets for High-Current Density Water Oxidation

The effective defect and interface coupling are pivotal for the promotion of the catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, we report novel hybrid nanosheets with sulfur vacancies composed of FeS2 and Cu39S28 grown on Cu foam (Vs-FeS2/Cu39S28). The optimal Vs-FeS2/Cu39S28 exhibits a high current output of 500 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 370 mV and robust stability for 60 h at 100 mA cm-2, surpassing the values of most previously reported Cu-based catalysts. Furthermore, a two-electrode electrolyzer made by pairing the prepared catalyst with commercial Pt/C requires a low cell voltage of 1.75 V at 100 mA cm-2 and is retained over 80 h. Key to its excellent performance is the synergism between intertwined FeS2 and Cu39S28 domains, enriched by the deliberate introduction of sulfur vacancies, thus optimizing the electronic structure and causing the proliferation of catalytic active sites. This work presents a potent Cu-based electrocatalyst and emphasizes the leveraging of non-precious metals for efficient water oxidation.

Enhanced electrocatalytic efficiencies for water electrolysis and para-nitrophenol hydrogenation by self-supported nickel cobalt phosphide-nickel iron layered double hydroxide p-n junction

Charge redistribution across heterointerfaces is an important tactic to enhance the catalytic activities and bifunctionality of hybrid catalysts, especially for green hydrogen production from water electrolysis and harmless electrocatalytic valorization of organics. Herein, a self-supported p-n junction catalytic electrode was constructed by tandem electrodeposition of nickel cobalt phosphide (NiCoP) and nickel iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) onto Ni foam (NF) substrate, denoted as NiCoP@NiFe LDH/NF, to enhance the electrocatalytic capabilities for water electrolysis and hydrogenation of an organic, para-nitrophenol (4-NP). Benefitting from the charge redistribution across the p-n junction, high electrocatalytic efficiencies for oxygen evolution reaction (OER, overpotential of 388 mV at 100 mA cm-2) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, overpotential of 132 mV at 10 mA cm-2) could be achieved concurrently by the NiCoP@NiFe LDH/NF electrode, and both overpotentials were located within the mainstream levels in this domain. The bifunctional catalytic features enabled a full water electrolysis response of 10 mA cm-2 at 1.61 V. In addition, the p-n junction electrode catalyzed the hydrogenation of 4-NP at a conversion of 100%, para-aminophenol (4-AP) selectivity of 90% and faradaic efficiency (FE) of 88% at -0.18 V. The current work offers a feasible strategy for fulfilling electrochemical H2 production and hydrogenation valorization of 4-NP pollutant by constructing a self-supported p-n junction catalytic electrode.

Interfacial Coupling Engineering Boosting Electrocatalytic Performance of CoFe Layered Double Hydroxide Assembled on N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets for Water Splitting and Flexible Zinc-Air Batteries

The disadvantages of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) such as easy stacking, poor inherent conductivity, and limited versatility hinder their application in splitting water and zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Interface engineering to regulate the electron distribution of LDHs by introducing another component is a way to compensate for the poor electron transport capacity of LDHs during catalysis. Herein, a hierarchical structure is synthesized by assembling CoFe-LDH nanosheets onto the surface of layered N-doped porous carbon (NPC), CoFe-LDH@NPC, by using an interface engineering strategy. CoFe-LDH@NPC has high catalytic activity for the oxygen/hydrogen evolution reaction (OER/HER) with overpotentials of 280/100 mV, respectively. The two-electrode water splitting catalyzed by CoFe-LDH@NPC only needs 1.61 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for 60 h. The theoretical results show that there is an electron-deficient/electron-rich interface between the NPC substrate and the CoFe-LDH in CoFe-LDH@NPC. The electrons on the coupling interface are easily transferred, which results in a change of the adsorption behavior of the reaction intermediates and improves the catalytic activity for the OER and HER. In addition, CoFe-LDH@NPC-catalyzed rechargeable flexible ZABs have excellent performance with low charge-discharge polarization (0.87 V) and a long-term stability of 65 h.

Heterostructure Interface Engineering in CoP/FeP/CeOx with a Tailored d-Band Center for Promising Overall Water Splitting Electrocatalysis

Accomplishing a green hydrogen economy in reality through water spitting ultimately relies upon earth-abundant efficient electrocatalysts that can simultaneously accelerate the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER). The perspective of electronic structure modulation via interface engineering is of great significance to optimize electrocatalytic output but remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, an efficient tactic has been explored to prepare nanosheet-assembly tumbleweed-like CoFeCe-containing precursors with time-/energy-saving and easy-operating features. Subsequently, the final metal phosphide materials containing multiple interfaces, denoted CoP/FeP/CeO_x, have been synthesized via the phosphorization process. Through the optimization of the Co/Fe ratio and the content of the rare-earth Ce element, the electrocatalytic activity has been regulated. As a result, bifunctional Co3Fe/Ce0.025 reaches the top of the volcano for both OER and HER simultaneously, with the smallest overpotentials of 285 mV (OER) and 178 mV (HER) at 10 mA cm^-2 current density in an alkaline environment. Multicomponent heterostructure interface engineering would lead to more exposed active sites, feasible charge transport, and strong interfacial electronic interaction. More importantly, the appropriate Co/Fe ratio and Ce content can synergistically tailor the d-band center with a downshift to enhance the per-site intrinsic activity. This work would provide valuable insights to regulate the electronic structure of superior electrocatalysts toward water splitting by constructing rare-earth compounds containing multiple heterointerfaces.

Plasma-Assisted Defect Engineering on p-n Heterojunction for High-Efficiency Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis

A defect-rich 2D p-n heterojunction, Co_x Ni_{3- x} (HITP)₂ /BNSs-P (HITP: 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene), is constructed using a semiconductive metal-organic framework (MOF) and boron nanosheets (BNSs) by in situ solution plasma modification. The heterojunction is an effective catalyst for the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) under ambient conditions. Interface engineering and plasma-assisted defects on the p-n Co_x Ni_3-x (HITP)₂ /BNSs-P heterojunction led to the formation of both Co-N₃ and B…O dual-active sites. As a result, Co_x Ni_3-x (HITP)₂ /BNSs-P has a high NH₃ yield of 128.26 ± 2.27 µg h^-1 mg_cat. ^-1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 52.92 ± 1.83% in 0.1 m HCl solution. The catalytic mechanism for the eNRR is also studied by in situ FTIR spectra and DFT calculations. A Co_x Ni_{3- x} (HITP)₂ /BNSs-P-based Zn-N₂ battery achieved an unprecedented power output with a peak power density of 5.40 mW cm^-2 and an energy density of 240 mA h g_zn ^-1 in 0.1 m HCl. This study establishes an efficient strategy for the rational design, using defect and interfacial engineering, of advanced eNRR catalysts for ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions.

Designing a Built-In Electric Field for Efficient Energy Electrocatalysis

To utilize intermittent renewable energy as well as achieve the goals of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality, various electrocatalytic devices have been developed. However, the electrocatalytic reactions, e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction/oxygen evolution reaction in overall water splitting, polysulfide conversion in lithium-sulfur batteries, formation/decomposition of lithium peroxide in lithium-oxygen batteries, and nitrate reduction reaction to degrade sewage, suffer from sluggish kinetics caused by multielectron transfer processes. Owing to the merits of accelerated charge transport, optimized adsorption/desorption of intermediates, raised conductivity, regulation of the reaction microenvironment, as well as ease to combine with geometric characteristics, the built-in electric field (BIEF) is expected to overcome the above problems. Here, we give a Review about the very recent progress of BIEF for efficient energy electrocatalysis. First, the construction strategies and the characterization methods (qualitative and quantitative analysis) of BIEF are summarized. Then, the up-to-date overviews of BIEF engineering in electrocatalysis, with attention on the electron structure optimization and reaction microenvironment modulation, are analyzed and discussed in detail. In the end, the challenges and perspectives of BIEF engineering are proposed. This Review gives a deep understanding on the design of electrocatalysts with BIEF for next-generation energy storage and electrocatalytic devices.

Hollow-structured amorphous Cu(OH)x nanowires doped with Ru for wide pH electrocatalytic hydrogen production

Developing efficient and stable catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with low overpotential is the key point to realizing large-scale hydrogen commercialization. Herein, Ru doped amorphous hollow copper hydroxide nanowires on copper foam (Ru-Cu(OH)_x/CF) is prepared by surface chemical oxidization and following solvothermal process. The hollow 3D nanowire structure can provide abundant accessibility active sites, promote electrolyte in filtration and facilitate gas diffusion in the process of the electrochemical reaction. Then, the as-synthesized Ru-Cu(OH)_x/CF electrocatalyst exhibits impressive electrocatalytic performance for HER with 45, 80 and 50 mV to drive 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and 0.5 M H₂SO₄, respectively, with remarkable long-term stability. Moreover, sustainable energies can power the two-electrode setup with amounts of hydrogen generation. The strategy may be particularly beneficial to explore simple synthesis and high-performance catalysts for HER.

A processable Prussian blue analogue-mediated route to promote alkaline electrocatalytic water splitting over bifunctional copper phosphide

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) as a class of metal-organic frameworks demonstrate a promising platform to develop cost-effective high-performance electrocatalysts. However, the construction of delicate micro/nanostructures and controllable doping are still a challenging task for the fabrication of highly efficient copper-based electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of copper foam supported Cu₃P@Co-Cu₃P (CH@PBA-P/CF) sub-microwire arrays as an active electrocatalyst for alkaline water splitting. The Co-Cu₃P shell derived from the Cu₃[Co(CN)₆]₂ PBA serves as the source of active sites. Co doping and construction of core-shell structures endow the CH@PBA-P/CF electrocatalyst with abundant catalytic sites, enhanced intrinsic activity, and low charge transport resistance. The catalytic electrode integrated with 3D copper foam and 1D sub-microwire arrays is highly conductive and stable, which promotes the charge transport and improves the structural stability. As a consequence, CH@PBA-P/CF shows impressive catalytic performances toward the HER and OER in terms of low overpotentials of 231 and 312 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm^-2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Notably, the water electrolyzer using the CH@PBA-P/CF electrode exhibits better water splitting performance than the one using noble metal-based couples.

Boosting Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysis via Regulating the Electronic Structure in a Crystalline-Amorphous CoP/CeOx p-n Heterojunction

The modulation of the electronic structure is the effective access to achieve highly active electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Transition-metal phosphide-based heterostructures are very promising in enhancing HER performance but the facile fabrication and an in-depth study of the catalytic mechanisms still remain a challenge. In this work, the catalytically inactive n-type CeOx is successfully combined with p-type CoP to form the CoP/CeOx heterojunction. The crystalline-amorphous CoP/CeOx heterojunction is fabricated by the phosphorization of predesigned Co(OH)2/CeOx via the as-developed reduction-hydrolysis strategy. The p-n CoP/CeOx heterojunction with a strong built-in potential of 1.38 V enables the regulation of the electronic structure of active CoP within the space-charge region to enhance its intrinsic activity and facilitate the electron transfer. The functional CeOx entity and the negatively charged CoP can promote the water dissociation and optimize H adsorption, synergistically boosting the electrocatalytic HER output. As expected, the heterostructured CoP/CeOx-20:1 with the optimal ratio of Co/Ce shows significantly improved HER activity and favorable kinetics (overpotential of 118 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and Tafel slope of 77.26 mV dec-1). The present study may provide new insight into the integration of crystalline and amorphous entities into the p-n heterojunction as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for energy storage and conversion.

Electrochemical preparation of nano/micron structure transition metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Electrochemical water splitting is a promising technology for hydrogen production and sustainable energy conversion, but the existing electrolytic cells lack a sufficient number of robust and highly active anodic electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Electrochemical synthesis technology provides a feasible route for the preparation of independent OER electrodes with high utilization of active sites, fast mass transfer, and a simple preparation process. A comprehensive review of the electrochemical synthesis of nano/microstructure transition metal-based OER materials is provided. First, some fundamentals of electrochemical synthesis are introduced, including electrochemical synthesis strategies, electrochemical synthesis substrates, the electrolyte used in electrochemical synthesis, and the combination of electrochemical synthesis and other synthesis methods. Second, the morphology and properties of electrochemical synthetic materials are summarized and introduced from the viewpoint of structural design. Then, the latest progress regarding the development of transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts is reviewed, including the classification of metals/alloys, oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, phosphides, selenides, and other transition metal compounds. In addition, the oxygen evolution mechanism and rate-determining steps of transition metal-based catalysts are also discussed. Finally, the advantages, challenges, and opportunities regarding the application of electrochemical techniques in the synthesis of transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts are summarized. This review can provide inspiration for researchers and promote the development of water splitting technology.

Rational Regulation of Crystalline/Amorphous Microprisms-Nanochannels Based on Molecular Sieve (VSB-5) for Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

Rational regulation of the composition and structure of electrocatalysts is crucial to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a new electrocatalyst of nickel phosphate microprism (VSB/NiPO) is developed via a simple solvothermal reaction. The microprism is mainly composed of Versailles-Santa Barbara-5 (VSB-5, molecular sieve) with unique nanochannels, which contribute to accelerating mass transfer and exposing more active sites, thus displaying excellent HER activity. Subsequently, the crystallinity and electronic structure of the framework are modulated by incorporating Fe with the combination of calcination and impregnation. The nanochannels are converted to the amorphous arrangement, and the Ni centers are regulated to the higher valence. The resultant Fe-VSB/NiPO-500 exhibits a low OER overpotential of 227 mV at 50 mA cm^-2 . Interestingly, an integrated electrolyzer assembled by VSB/NiPO(-) and Fe-VSB/NiPO-500(+) performs well for overall water splitting, which requires only 1.487 V to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 , and remains stable at 100 mA cm^-2 over 100 h. This finding opens a new avenue for developing VSB-5 in the field of electrocatalysis.

Heterostructure of Semiconductors on Self-Supported Cuprous Phosphide Nanowires for Enhanced Overall Water Splitting

Rational design, controllable synthesis, and an in-depth mechanism study of Cu-based bifunctional semiconductor heterostructures toward overall water splitting (OWS) are imperative but still face challenges. Herein, n-type iron oxide and p-type nickel phosphide and cobalt phosphide are respectively coupled with p-type cuprous phosphide nanowires on Cu foams via a general growth-phosphorization strategy. These self-supported semiconductor heterojunctions with different built-in potentials (E_BI) are used as binder-free electrodes for OWS and exhibit significantly improved electrocatalytic activities compared to their counterparts. Among them, the heterostructure with the largest E_BI of 1.57 V attains the smallest overpotential of 97 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction and 243 mV at 50 mA cm^-2 for the oxygen evolution reaction in 1 M KOH. The corresponding two-electrode electrolyzer requires a cell voltage of 1.685 V at 50 mA cm^-2 and shows admirable long-term stability at 100 mA cm^-2 with a Faraday efficiency of around 98%. These promoted electrocatalytic performances originate from the enhanced active site, accelerated charge transfer, enlarged electrochemical active surface area, and synergy between different components at the heterointerface. This work represents a promising avenue to construct cost-efficient semiconductor heterostructures as bifunctional electrocatalysts applied to the sustainable energy industry.

Recent Progress on Transition Metal Based Layered Double Hydroxides Tailored for Oxygen Electrode Reactions

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), namely, so-called oxygen electrode reactions, are two fundamental half-cell reactions in the energy storage and conversion devices, e.g., zinc–air batteries and fuel cells. However, the oxygen electrode reactions suffer from sluggish kinetics, large overpotential and complicated reaction paths, and thus require efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Transition-metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and their derivatives have displayed excellent catalytic performance, suggesting a major contribution to accelerate electrochemical reactions. The rational regulation of electronic structure, defects, and coordination environment of active sites via various functionalized strategies, including tuning the chemical composition, structural architecture, and topotactic transformation process of LDHs precursors, has a great influence on the resulting electrocatalytic behavior. In addition, an in-depth understanding of the structural performance and chemical-composition-performance relationships of LDHs-based electrocatalysts can promote further rational design and optimization of high-performance electrocatalysts. Finally, prospects for the design of efficient and stable LDHs-based materials, for mass-production and large-scale application in practice, are discussed.
