Recent Advanced Development of Artificial Interphase Engineering for Stable Sodium Metal Anodes

An autotransferable alloy overlayer toward stable sodium metal anodes

Sodium (Na) metal anodes receive significant attention due to their high theoretical specific energy and cost-effectiveness. However, the high reactivity of Na foil anodes and the irregular surfaces have posed challenges to the operability and reliability of Na metals in battery applications. In the absence of inert environmental protection conditions, constructing a uniform, dense, and sodiophilic Na metal anode surface is crucial for homogenizing Na deposition, but remains less-explored. Herein, we fabricated a Tin (Sn) nanoparticle-assembled film conforming to separator pores, which provided ample space for accommodating volumetric expansion during the Na alloying process. Subsequently, a seamless Na-Sn alloy overlayer was formed and transferred onto the Na foil during Na plating through a separator-assisted technique, thereby overcoming conventional operational limitations of metallic Na. As compared to traditional volumetrically expanded cracked ones, the present autotransferable, highly sodiophilic, ion-conductive, and seamless Na-Sn alloy overlayer serves as uniform nucleation sites, thereby reducing nucleation and diffusion barriers and facilitating the compact deposition of metallic Na. Consequently, the autotransferable alloy layer enables a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.9 % at 3.0 mA cm-2 and 3.0 mAh cm-2 in the half cells as well as minimal polarization overpotentials in symmetric cells, both during prolonged cycling 1200 h. Furthermore, the assembled Na||Sn-1.0h-PP||Na3V2(PO4)3@C@CNTs full cell delivers high capacity retention of 97.5 % after 200 cycles at a high cathodic mass loading.

Carbonyl Chemistry for Advanced Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems

On the basis of the sustainable concept, organic compounds and carbon materials both mainly composed of light C element have been regarded as powerful candidates for advanced electrochemical energy storage (EES) systems, due to theie merits of low cost, eco-friendliness, renewability, and structural versatility. It is investigated that the carbonyl functionality as the most common constituent part serves a crucial role, which manifests respective different mechanisms in the various aspects of EES systems. Notably, a systematical review about the concept and progress for carbonyl chemistry is beneficial for ensuring in-depth comprehending of carbonyl functionality. Hence, a comprehensive review about carbonyl chemistry has been summarized based on state-of-the-art developments. Moreover, the working principles and fundamental properties of the carbonyl unit have been discussed, which has been generalized in three aspects, including redox activity, the interaction effect, and compensation characteristic. Meanwhile, the pivotal characterization technologies have also been illustrated for purposefully studying the related structure, redox mechanism, and electrochemical performance to profitably understand the carbonyl chemistry. Finally, the current challenges and promising directions are concluded, aiming to afford significant guidance for the optimal utilization of carbonyl moiety and propel practicality in EES systems.

Electro-Chemo-Mechanically Stable and Sodiophilic Interface for Na Metal Anode in Liquid-based and Solid-State Batteries

Na metal batteries (NMBs) are attracting increasing attention because of their high energy density. However, the widespread application of NMBs is hindered by the growth of Na dendrites and interface instability. The design of artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with tuned chemical/electrochemical/mechanical properties is the key to achieving high-performance NMBs. This work develops a metal-doped nanoscale polymeric film with tunable composition, sodiophilic sites and improved stiffness. The incorporation of metal crosslinkers in the polymer chains results in exceptional electrochemical stability for Na metal anodes, leading to a significantly prolonged lifespan even at high current densities, which is at the top of the reported literature. The mechanical properties measurements and electro-chemo-mechanical phase-field model are performed to interpret the impact of the ionic transportation capability (decoupled mechanical) and mechanic property in the metal-doped polymer interface. In addition, this approach provides a promising strategy for the rational design of electrode interfaces, providing enhanced mechanical stability and improved sodiophilicity, which can open up opportunities for the fabrication of next-generation energy storage.

A Critical Review on Room-Temperature Sodium-Sulfur Batteries: From Research Advances to Practical Perspectives

Room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT-Na/S) batteries are promising alternatives for next-generation energy storage systems with high energy density and high power density. However, some notorious issues are hampering the practical application of RT-Na/S batteries. Besides, the working mechanism of RT-Na/S batteries under practical conditions such as high sulfur loading, lean electrolyte, and low capacity ratio between the negative and positive electrode (N/P ratio), is of essential importance for practical applications, yet the significance of these parameters has long been disregarded. Herein, it is comprehensively reviewed recent advances on Na metal anode, S cathode, electrolyte, and separator engineering for RT-Na/S batteries. The discrepancies between laboratory research and practical conditions are elaborately discussed, endeavors toward practical applications are highlighted, and suggestions for the practical values of the crucial parameters are rationally proposed. Furthermore, an empirical equation to estimate the actual energy density of RT-Na/S pouch cells under practical conditions is rationally proposed for the first time, making it possible to evaluate the gravimetric energy density of the cells under practical conditions. This review aims to reemphasize the vital importance of the crucial parameters for RT-Na/S batteries to bridge the gaps between laboratory research and practical applications.

Ultra-stable dendrite-free Na and Li metal anodes enabled by tin selenide host material

Lithium/sodium metal anodes are considered promising candidates to realize high-energy-density batteries because of their high theoretical specific capacity and low potential. However, their cycling stability are hindered by uncontrolled dendrites growth. Herein, SnSe nanoparticles are tightly anchored on the fiber of carbon cloth (CC) to construct SnSe@CC host material in order to control Li/Na nucleation behavior and restrain dendrites growth. It is demonstrated that the alloying product of Li15Sn4/Na15Sn4 with strong metal affinity can provide abundant active nucleation sites, and three-dimensional structure of CC host can significantly decrease the local electric current, thereby guiding homogeneous metal deposition without Li and Na dendrites. Meanwhile, the conversion product of Li2Se/Na2Se will uniformly cover on the surface of metal to serve as ultra-stable solid state interface film. As a result, high-capacity Li metal anode (20 mAh·cm-2) and Na metal anode (10 mAh·cm-2) can work steadily with ultra-long lifespans over 5000 and 6000 h with low overpotentials of 7 mV and 141 mV, respectively. Moreover, the assembled Li and Na metal full batteries exhibit superior electrochemical performances, confirming the practicability of metal anode confined in composite host. Such a strategy of conversion-alloying-type materials as hosts opens up a new path for dendrite-free metal anode electrode.

Confining Polymer Electrolyte in MOF for Safe and High-Performance All-Solid-State Sodium Metal Batteries

Nanoconfined polymer molecules exhibit profound transformations in their properties and behaviors. Here, we present the synthesis of a polymer-in-MOF single ion conducting solid polymer electrolyte, where polymer segments are partially confined within nanopores ZIF-8 particles through Lewis acid-base interactions for solid-state sodium-metal batteries (SSMBs). The unique nanoconfinement effectively weakens Na ion coordination with the anions, facilitating the Na ion dissociation from salt. Simultaneously, the well-defined nanopores within ZIF-8 particles provide oriented and ordered migration channels for Na migration. As a result, this pioneering design allows the solid polymer electrolyte to achieve a Na ion transference number of 0.87, Na ion conductivity of 4.01×10-4 S cm-1, and an extended electrochemical voltage window up to 4.89 V vs. Na/Na+. The assembled SSMBs (with Na3V2(PO4)3 as the cathode) exhibit dendrite-free Na-metal deposition, promising rate capability, and stable cycling performance with 96 % capacity retention over 300 cycles. This innovative polymer-in-MOF design offers a compelling strategy for advancing high-performance and safe solid-state metal battery technologies.

What are the key stability challenges in high-bandwidth, non-minimum phase systems with time-varying, and non-smooth delays?

The analysis and control of stability in high-bandwidth systems characterized by non-minimum phase delays represent a formidable challenge within the realm of control theory and engineering. This research aims to address the pivotal question of whether it is feasible to enhance the stability of such intricate systems. These systems inherently possess uncertain and swiftly changing delay characteristics, rendering them exceptionally demanding to control effectively. In the course of this investigation, we embark on a comprehensive exploration of the theoretical underpinnings of the stability of high-bandwidth, non-minimum phase delay systems. This encompassing inquiry encompasses a meticulous consideration of both derivative-delay and piecewise continuous delay components. To underpin our analysis, we judiciously incorporate feedback mechanisms, drawing upon mathematical tools such as the Jensen inequality and Lyapunov-based methodologies to rigorously establish stability conditions. Furthermore, our exploration extends to encompass the concept of input-output stability and complements it with the notion of asymptotic stability, thereby ensuring that the systems in question exhibit uniform stability across diverse temporal domains. The outcomes of our investigation furnish compelling evidence that by harnessing the power of discrete-time Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals, it becomes conceivable to circumscribe the maximum delay within predefined thresholds. This achievement holds the promise of enhancing stability in non-minimum phase delay systems characterized by high bandwidth. These findings have far-reaching implications, profoundly influencing the design and control paradigms across a spectrum of engineering applications. Notably, this impact extends to areas such as communication networks, real-time control systems, and robotics, where the mitigation of instability due to non-minimum phase delays has been an enduring challenge.

3D mixed ion/electron-conducting scaffolds for stable sodium metal anodes

Sodium (Na) metal batteries represent an optimal choice for the forthcoming generation of large-scale, cost-effective energy storage systems. However, Na metal anodes encounter several formidable challenges during the Na plating and stripping processes, which encompass the formation of an unstable solid electrolyte interface, uncontrollable dendrite growth, and infinite volume expansion. These issues result in a reduced Coulombic efficiency, shortened battery lifespan, and potential safety hazards, thereby constraining their commercial development. Therefore, addressing these challenges to ensure the cycling stability of Na metal anodes stands as a paramount requirement for practical applications. Among the reported strategies, three-dimensional conductive scaffolds possessing a high surface area and porous structure are acknowledged for their significant potential in stabilizing Na metal anodes. Compared with conventional electron-conducting scaffolds, emerging mixed ion/electron-conductive (MIEC) scaffolds provide rapid ion/electron transport pathways, which enable uniform Na+ flux and promote dendrite-free Na deposition, thus improving the cycle life of Na metal anodes, even at high current densities and large areal capacities. Therefore, this review primarily emphasizes the recent progress in applying MIEC scaffolds to Na metal anodes. It introduces diverse design methods, examines the electrochemical performance of MIEC scaffolds, and delves into their regulation mechanisms over Na deposition behaviour. Finally, the development prospects and research strategies for MIEC scaffolds from both fundamental research and practical application perspectives are discussed, suggesting directions for further designing high-performance Na metal batteries.

A Sodiophilic Amyloid Fibril Modified Separator for Dendrite-Free Sodium-Metal Batteries

Sodium (Na) batteries are being considered as prospective candidates for the next generation of secondary batteries in contrast to lithium-based batteries, due to their high raw-material abundance, low cost, and sustainability. However, the unfavorable growth of Na-metal deposition and severe interfacial reactions have prevented their large-scale applications. Here, a vacuum filtration strategy, through amyloid-fibril-modified glass-fiber separators, is proposed to address these issues. The modified symmetric cell can be cycled for 1800 h, surpassing the performance of previously reported Na-based electrodes under an ester-based electrolyte. Moreover, the Na/Na3 V2 (PO4 )3 full cell with a sodiophilic amyloid-fibril-modified separator exhibits a capacity retention of 87.13% even after 1000 cycles. Both the experimental and the theoretical results show that the sodiophilic amyloid fibril homogenizes the electric field and Na-ion concentration, fundamentally inhibiting dendrite formation. Simultaneously, the glutamine amino acids in the amyloid fibril have the highest adsorption energy for Na, resulting in the formation of a stable Na3 N- and NaNx Oy -rich solid-electrolyte-interface film on the anode during cycling. This work provides not only a possible pathway to solve the dendrite problem in metal batteries using environmentally friendly biomacromolecular materials, but also a new direction for expanding biomaterial applications.

Recent progress and strategic perspectives of inorganic solid electrolytes: fundamentals, modifications, and applications in sodium metal batteries

Solid-state electrolytes (SEs) have attracted overwhelming attention as a promising alternative to traditional organic liquid electrolytes (OLEs) for high-energy-density sodium-metal batteries (SMBs), owing to their intrinsic incombustibility, wider electrochemical stability window (ESW), and better thermal stability. Among various kinds of SEs, inorganic solid-state electrolytes (ISEs) stand out because of their high ionic conductivity, excellent oxidative stability, and good mechanical strength, rendering potential utilization in safe and dendrite-free SMBs at room temperature. However, the development of Na-ion ISEs still remains challenging, that a perfect solution has yet to be achieved. Herein, we provide a comprehensive and in-depth inspection of the state-of-the-art ISEs, aiming at revealing the underlying Na⁺ conduction mechanisms at different length scales, and interpreting their compatibility with the Na metal anode from multiple aspects. A thorough material screening will include nearly all ISEs developed to date, i.e., oxides, chalcogenides, halides, antiperovskites, and borohydrides, followed by an overview of the modification strategies for enhancing their ionic conductivity and interfacial compatibility with Na metal, including synthesis, doping and interfacial engineering. By discussing the remaining challenges in ISE research, we propose rational and strategic perspectives that can serve as guidelines for future development of desirable ISEs and practical implementation of high-performance SMBs.

Rapidly Constructing Sodium Fluoride-Rich Interface by Pressure and Diglyme-Induced Defluorination Reaction for Stable Sodium Metal Anode

Sodium (Na) metal is able to directly use as a battery anode but have a highly reductive ability of unavoidably occurring side reactions with organic electrolytes, resulting in interfacial instability as a primary factor in performance decay. Therefore, building stable Na metal anode is of utmost significance for both identifying the electrochemical performance of laboratory half-cells employed for quantifying samples and securing the success of room-temperature Na metal batteries. In this work, we propose an NaF-rich interface rapidly prepared by pressure and diglyme-induced defluorination reaction for stable Na metal anode. Once the electrolyte is dropped into the coin-type cells followed by a slight squeeze, the Na metal surface immediately forms a protective layer consisting of amorphous carbon and NaF, effectively inhibiting the dendrite growth and dead Na. The resultant Na metal anode exhibits a long-term cycling lifespan over 1800 h even under the area capacity of 3.0 mAh cm^-2 . Furthermore, such a universal and facile method is readily applied in daily battery assembly regarding Na metal anode.

Construction of Inorganic/Organic Hybrid Layer for Stable Na Metal Anode Operated under Wide Temperatures

Sodium metal battery is supposed to be a propitious technology for high-energy storage application owing to the advantages of natural abundance and low cost. Unfortunately, the uncontrollable dendrite growth critically hampers its practical implementation. Herein, an inorganic/organic hybrid layer of NaF/CF/CC on the surface of Na foil (IOHL-Na) is designed and synthesized through the in situ reaction of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and metallic sodium. This protective layer possesses satisfactory Young's modulus, good kinetic property, and sodiophilicity, which can distinctly stabilize Na metal anode. As a result, the symmetric IOHL-Na cell achieves a lifespan of 770 h at 1 mAh cm^-2 /1 mA cm^-2 in carbonate electrolyte. The assembled full battery of IOHL-Na||Na₃ V₂ (PO₄ )₃ delivers a high discharge capacity of 85 mAh g^-1 at 10 C after 600 cycles under ambient temperature. Furthermore, the IOHL-Na||Na₃ V₂ (PO₄ )₃ cell still can steadily operate at 10 C for 600 cycles at 55 °C. And when testing at an ultralow temperature of -40 °C, the full cell achieves 40 mAh g^-1 at 0.5 C with a prolonged lifespan of 450 cycles. This work offers a new approach to protect the metal sodium anode without dendrite growth under wide temperatures.

Fundamental Understanding of Nonaqueous and Hybrid Na-CO2 Batteries: Challenges and Perspectives

Alkali metal-CO₂ batteries, which combine CO₂ recycling with energy conversion and storage, are a promising way to address the energy crisis and global warming. Unfortunately, the limited cycle life, poor reversibility, and low energy efficiency of these batteries have hindered their commercialization. Li-CO₂ battery systems have been intensively researched in these aspects over the past few years, however, the exploration of Na-CO₂ batteries is still in its infancy. To improve the development of Na-CO₂ batteries, one must have a full picture of the chemistry and electrochemistry controlling the operation of Na-CO₂ batteries and a full understanding of the correlation between cell configurations and functionality therein. Here, recent advances in CO₂ chemical and electrochemical mechanisms on nonaqueous Na-CO₂ batteries and hybrid Na-CO₂ batteries (including O₂ -involved Na-O₂ /CO₂ batteries) are reviewed in-depth and comprehensively. Following this, the primary issues and challenges in various battery components are identified, and the design strategies for the interfacial structure of Na anodes, electrolyte properties, and cathode materials are explored, along with the correlations between cell configurations, functional materials, and comprehensive performances are established. Finally, the prospects and directions for rationally constructing Na-CO₂ battery materials are foreseen.

Achieving Ultra-Stable All-Solid-State Sodium Metal Batteries with Anion-Trapping 3D Fiber Network Enhanced Polymer Electrolyte

All-solid-state sodium metal batteries paired with solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are considered a promising candidate for high energy-density, low-cost, and high-safety energy storage systems. However, the low ionic conductivity and inferior interfacial stability with Na metal anode of SPEs severely hinder their practical applications. Herein, an anion-trapping 3D fiber network enhanced polymer electrolyte (ATFPE) is developed by infusing poly(ethylene oxide) matrix into an electrostatic spun fiber framework loading with an orderly arranged metal-organic framework (MOF). The 3D continuous channel provides a fast Na⁺ transport path leading to high ionic conductivity, and simultaneously the rich coordinated unsaturated cation sites exposed on MOF can effectively trap anions, thus regulating Na⁺ concentration distribution for constructing stable electrolyte/Na anode interface. Based on such advantages, the ATFPE exhibits high ionic conductivity and considerable Na⁺ transference number, as well as enhanced interfacial stability. Consequently, Na/Na symmetric cells using this ATFPE possess cyclability over 600 h at 0.1 mA cm^-2 without discernable Na dendrites. Cooperated with Na₃ V₂ (PO₄ )₃ cathode, the all-solid-state sodium metal batteries (ASSMBs) demonstrate significantly improved rate and cycle performances, delivering a high discharge capacity of 117.5 mAh g^-1 under 0.1 C and rendering high capacity retention of 78.2% after 1000 cycles even at 1 C.

Challenge and Strategies in Room Temperature Sodium-Sulfur Batteries: A Comparison with Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Metal-sulfur batteries exhibit great potential as next-generation rechargeable batteries due to the low sulfur cost and high theoretical energy density. Sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries present higher feasibility of long-term development than lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries in technoeconomic and geopolitical terms. Both lithium and sodium are alkali metal elements with body-centered cubic structures, leading to similar physical and chemical properties and exposing similar issues when employed as the anode in metal-sulfur batteries. Indeed, some inspiration for mechanism researches and strategies in Na-S systems comes from the more mature Li-S systems. However, the dissimilarities in microscopic characteristics determine that Na-S is not a direct Li-S analogue. Herein, the daunting challenges derived by the differences of fundamental characteristics in Na-S and Li-S systems are discussed. And the corresponding strategies in Na-S batteries are reviewed. Finally, general conclusions and perspectives toward the research direction are presented based on the dissimilarities between both systems. This review attempts to provide important insights to facilitate the assimilation of the available knowledge on Li-S systems for accelerating the development of Na-S batteries on the basis of their dissimilarities.

Atomic and Molecular Layer Deposition as Surface Engineering Techniques for Emerging Alkali Metal Rechargeable Batteries

Alkali metals (lithium, sodium, and potassium) are promising as anodes in emerging rechargeable batteries, ascribed to their high capacity or abundance. Two commonly experienced issues, however, have hindered them from commercialization: the dendritic growth of alkali metals during plating and the formation of solid electrolyte interphase due to contact with liquid electrolytes. Many technical strategies have been developed for addressing these two issues in the past decades. Among them, atomic and molecular layer deposition (ALD and MLD) have been drawing more and more efforts, owing to a series of their unique capabilities. ALD and MLD enable a variety of inorganic, organic, and even inorganic-organic hybrid materials, featuring accurate nanoscale controllability, low process temperature, and extremely uniform and conformal coverage. Consequently, ALD and MLD have paved a novel route for tackling the issues of alkali metal anodes. In this review, we have made a thorough survey on surface coatings via ALD and MLD, and comparatively analyzed their effects on improving the safety and stability of alkali metal anodes. We expect that this article will help boost more efforts in exploring advanced surface coatings via ALD and MLD to successfully mitigate the issues of alkali metal anodes.

Highly Reversible Sodium Metal Battery Anodes via Alloying Heterointerfaces

As a promising pathway toward low-cost, long-duration energy storage, rechargeable sodium batteries are of increasing interest. Batteries that incorporate metallic sodium as anode promise a high theoretical specific capacity of 1166 mAh g^-1 , and low reduction potential of -2.71 V. The high reactivity and poor electrochemical reversibility of sodium anodes render sodium metal anode (SMA) cells among the most challenging for practical implementation. Here, the failure mechanisms of Na anodes are investigated and the authors report that loss of morphological control is not the fundamental cause of failure. Rather, it is the inherently poor anchoring/root structure of electrodeposited Na to the electrode substrate that leads to poor reversibility and cell failure. Poorly anchored Na deposits are prone to break away from the current collector, producing orphaning and poor anode utilization. Thin metallic coatings in a range of chemistries are proposed and evaluated as SMA substrates. Based on thermodynamic and ion transport considerations, such substrates undergo reversible alloying reactions with Na and are hypothesized to promote good root growth-regardless of the morphology. Among the various options, Au stands out for its ability to support long Na anode lifetime and high reversibility (Coulombic Efficiency > 98%), for coating thicknesses in the range of 10-1000 nm. As a first step toward evaluating practical utility of the anodes, their performance in Na||SPAN cells with N:P ratio close to 1:1 is evaluated.

Influence of Porosity of Sulfide-Based Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphases on Their Performance with Liquid and Solid Electrolytes in Li and Na Metal Batteries

Realization of all-solid-state batteries combined with metallic Li/Na is still hindered due to the unstable interface between the alkali metal and solid electrolytes, especially for highly promising thiophosphate materials. Artificial and uniform solid-electrolyte interphases (SEIs), serving as thin ion-conducting films, have been considered as a strategy to overcome the issues of such reactive interfaces. Here, we synthesized sulfide-based artificial SEIs (Li_xS_y and Na_xS_y) on Li and Na by solid/gas reaction between the alkali metal and S vapor. The synthesized films are carefully characterized with various chemical/electrochemical techniques. We show that these artificial SEIs are not beneficial from an application point of view since they either contribute to additional resistances (Li) or do not prevent reactions at the alkali metal/electrolyte interface (Na). We show that Na_xS_y is more porous than Li_xS_y, supported by (i) its rough morphology observed by focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy, (ii) the rapid decrease of R_interface (interfacial resistance) in Na_xS_y-covered-Na symmetric cells with liquid electrolyte upon aging under open-circuit potential, and (iii) the increase of R_interface in Na_xS_y-covered-Na solid-state symmetric cells with Na₃PS₄ electrolyte. The porous SEI allows the penetration of liquid electrolyte or alkali metal creep through its pores, resulting in a continuous chemical reaction. Hence, porosity of SEIs in general should be carefully taken into account in the application of batteries containing both liquid electrolyte and solid electrolyte.
