Photo-programmable hydrogel iontronics for electrically and chromatically rewritable circuits

Hydrogel-based iontronics is emerging as a promising frontier in healthcare and human-machine interfacing (HMI), offering excellent compatibility with biological systems in terms of electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties. However, conventional hydrogel systems have limitations in dynamically regulating their electrical and optical properties, which restricts their use in adaptive electronics and responsive interfaces. In this study, we present a new hydrogel system with UV photochemistry-induced reversible conductivity, enabling reversible changes in conductivity. Unlike typical photo-responsive hydrogels that revert to their original states upon removal of the light source, the new hydrogel can maintain its activated states without continuous light exposure, facilitating practical applications. By leveraging the photobase triphenylmethane leucohydroxide and photoacid n-nitrobenzaldehyde, we achieve a significant increase in photo-induced conductivity compared to existing photo-ionic hydrogels. Combining the effective photo-induced conductivity and the accompanied photochromatic effect, we demonstrate a full hydrogel-based stylus pad capable of tracking motion and strokes, and a soft calculator keypad with programmable conductivity and imprinted patterns. These advancements underscore the importance of actively controlling localized conductivity and processing light inputs in hydrogels, exhibiting their potential for diverse applications in bioelectronics and HMI.

Organic Thermoelectric Materials for Wearable Electronic Devices

Wearable electronic devices have emerged as a pivotal technology in healthcare and artificial intelligence robots. Among the materials that are employed in wearable electronic devices, organic thermoelectric materials possess great application potential due to their advantages such as flexibility, easy processing ability, no working noise, being self-powered, applicable in a wide range of scenarios, etc. However, compared with classic conductive materials and inorganic thermoelectric materials, the research on organic thermoelectric materials is still insufficient. In order to improve our understanding of the potential of organic thermoelectric materials in wearable electronic devices, this paper reviews the types of organic thermoelectric materials and composites, their assembly strategies, and their potential applications in wearable electronic devices. This review aims to guide new researchers and offer strategic insights into wearable electronic device development.

Soft touchless sensors and touchless sensing for soft robots

Soft robots are characterized by their mechanical compliance, making them well-suited for various bio-inspired applications. However, the challenge of preserving their flexibility during deployment has necessitated using soft sensors which can enhance their mobility, energy efficiency, and spatial adaptability. Through emulating the structure, strategies, and working principles of human senses, soft robots can detect stimuli without direct contact with soft touchless sensors and tactile stimuli. This has resulted in noteworthy progress within the field of soft robotics. Nevertheless, soft, touchless sensors offer the advantage of non-invasive sensing and gripping without the drawbacks linked to physical contact. Consequently, the popularity of soft touchless sensors has grown in recent years, as they facilitate intuitive and safe interactions with humans, other robots, and the surrounding environment. This review explores the emerging confluence of touchless sensing and soft robotics, outlining a roadmap for deployable soft robots to achieve human-level dexterity.

Designing Photothermal Superhydrophobic PET Fabrics via In Situ Polymerization and 1,4-Conjugation Addition Reaction

This study demonstrates a simple and fast method to integrate superhydrophobicity, UV protection, and photothermal effect onto PET fabrics. The surface of PET fabric forms a hierarchical rough structure through in situ oxidative polymerization of the pyrrole (Py). The 1,4-conjugate addition reaction between pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and octadecyl acrylate not only endows the PET fabric with superhydrophobicity but also forms a cross-linked network structure which improves the stability of multifunctional coatings on the surface of the PET fabric. In addition, the wettability of the prepared PET fabric is investigated by adjusting the Py monomer and octadecyl acrylate concentration. The results reveal that the prepared PET fabrics exhibit obviously superhydrophobic behavior with a contact angle of 155.8°. The surface temperature of the superhydrophobic PPy/PET fabric can rise to 91 °C under a simulated sunlight which is much higher than the pristine PET fabric, while reaching basically the same steady-state in five heating/cooling cycles. The prepared PET fabric also possesses excellent self-cleaning, UV shielding, and solar light absorption performances. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic PET fabric exhibited excellent stability against 180 °C high temperature, strong UV radiation, different pH solutions and organic solvent erosion, 8 h washing tests, and 25 sandpaper abrasion cycles. These findings provide a path for the future development of multifunctional fabrics using fluorine-free environmentally friendly materials.
