Enhancing the Intrinsic Activity and Stability of Perovskite Cobaltite at Elevated Temperature Through Surface Stress

Insights into in situ surface reconstruction in cobalt perovskite oxides for enhanced catalytic activity

An depth understanding of the fundamental interactions between surface termination and catalytic activity is crucial to prompt the properties of functional perovskite materials. The elastic energy due to size mismatch and electrostatic attraction of the charged Sr dopant by positively charged oxygen vacancies induced inert A-site surface enrichment rearrangement for perovskites. Lower temperatures could reduce A-site enrichment, but it is difficult to form perovskite crystals. La0.8Sr0.2CoO3-δ (LSCO) as a model perovskite oxide was modified with additive urea to reduce the crystallization temperature, and suppress Sr segregation. The LSCO catalysts with 600 °C annealing temperature (LSCO-600) exhibited a 19.4-fold reaction reactivity of toluene oxidation than that with 800 °C annealing temperature (LSCO-800). Combined surface-sensitive and depth-resolved techniques for surface and sub-surface analysis, surface Sr enrichment was effectively suppressed due to decreased oxygen vacancy concentration and smaller electrostatic driving force. DFT calculations and in-situ DRIFTs spectra well revealed that tuning the surface composition/termination affected the intrinsic reactivity. The catalyst surface with lower Sr enrichment could easily adsorb toluene, cleave, and decompose benzene rings, thus contributing to toluene degradation to CO2. This work demonstrates a green and efficient way to control surface composition and termination at the atomic scale for higher catalytic activity.

Local hydroxide ion enrichment at the inner surface of lacunaris perovskite nanotubes facilitates the oxygen evolution reaction

Numerous strategies have been devised to optimize the intrinsic activity of perovskite oxides for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, conventional synthetic routes typically yield limited numbers of active sites and low mass activities. More critically, the sluggish mass transfer poses a huge challenge, particularly under high polarization conditions, which impedes the overall reaction kinetics. Herein, lacunaris La0.5Pr0.25Ba0.25Co0.8Ni0.2O3-δ nanotubes (LPBCN-NTs) were prepared via electrospinning and post-annealing, which exhibited a small overpotential of 358.8 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a lower Tafel slope of 71.46 mV dec-1, superior to the values for the same stoichiometric LPBCN nanoparticles and solid nanofibers, state-of-the-art counterparts and commercial IrO2. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the surface oxygen vacancies in LPBCN-NTs significantly lowered the OH- adsorption energy, while finite element analysis indicated that the precisely constructed lacunaris NT structure enriched the OH- concentration at its inner surface by an order of magnitude, both of which collectively resulted in accelerated OER kinetics. This study clarifies the underlying mechanism of how the lacunaris nanotubular architecture and the surface oxygen vacancies of perovskite oxides affect heterocatalysis, which undoubtedly paves the way to handling the long-standing issues of sluggish mass transfer rates and poor intrinsic catalytic activity.

High-Entropy Perovskite Oxides as a Family of Electrocatalysts for Efficient and Selective Nitrogen Oxidation

Electrocatalytic nitrogen oxidation reaction (NOR) can convert nitrogen (N2) into nitrate (NO3-) under ambient conditions, providing an attractive approach for synthesis of NO3-, alternative to the current approach involving the harsh Haber-Bosch and Ostwald oxidation processes that necessitate high temperature, high pressure, and substantial carbon emission. Developing efficient NOR catalysts is a prerequisite, which remains a formidable challenge, owing to the weak activation/dissociation of N2. A variety of NOR electrocatalysts have been developed, but their NOR kinetics are still extremely sluggish, resulting in inferior Faradaic Efficiencies. Here, we report a high-entropy Ru-based perovskite oxide (denoted as Ru-HEP) that can function as a high-performance NOR catalyst and exhibit a high NO3- yield rate of 39.0 μmol mg-1 h-1 with a Faradaic Efficiency of 32.8%. Both our experimental results and theoretical calculations suggest that the high-entropy configuration of Ru-HEP perovskite oxide can markedly enhance the oxygen-vacancy concentration, where the Ru sites and their neighboring oxygen vacancies can serve as unsaturated centers and decrease the overall energy barrier for N2 electrooxidation, thereby leading to promoted NOR kinetics. This work presents an alternative avenue for promoting NOR catalysis on perovskite oxides through the high-entropy engineering strategy.

Metal exsolution from perovskite-based anodes in solid oxide fuel cells

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are highly efficient and environmentally friendly devices for converting fuel into electrical energy. In this regard, metal nanoparticles (NPs) loaded onto the anode oxide play a crucial role due to their exceptional catalytic activity. NPs synthesized through exsolution exhibit excellent dispersion and stability, garnering significant attention for comprehending the exsolution process mechanism and consequently improving synthesis effectiveness. This review presents recent advancements in the exsolution process, focusing on the influence of oxygen vacancies, A-site defects, lattice strain, and phase transformation on the variation of the octahedral crystal field in perovskites. Moreover, we offer insights into future research directions to further enhance our understanding of the mechanism and achieve significant exsolution of NPs on perovskites.

Temperature Dependent Hydrogen Bond Toward High Emission in an Emerging Indium-Based Perovskite

Low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) with broadband emission attract immense scientific interest due to their potential application for the next generation of solid-state lighting. However, due to low exciton utilization, organic cations generally adjust structure rather than contribute the band edge to affect optical properties. Based on this, OIHPs are usually allowed to obtain a low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Herein, a good charge transfer carrier (p-phenylenediamine, PPDA) as organic cation is rationally employed and a novel indium-based perovskite is synthesized. By coupling with H2 O molecules, a strong interaction between organic and inorganic components is realized by hydrogen bonding, which has good transportability and greatly improves the exciton utilization. The regions of hydrogen bonding show high electron mobility, combined with the induced recombination center, improving the progress of charge relaxation. As a result, the regulation of hydrogen bond strength based on the microstructure optimization directly determines the optical emission intensity, realizing nearly 100% PLQY. Further, the polyhydrogen bond structure makes each component a stronger interaction, showing high stability in polar, organic, and acidic solvent, as well as long-term storing, which represents one of the highest overall performances for lighting in OIHPs.

Artificial intelligence-aided preparation of perovskite SrFexZr1-xO3-δ catalysts for ozonation degradation of organic pollutant concentrated water after membrane treatment

Membrane technology has been widely used to treat wastewater from a variety of industries, but it also results in a large amount of concentrated wastewater containing organic pollutants after membrane treatment, which is challenging to decompose. Here in this work, a series of perovskite SrFe_xZr_1-xO_3-δ catalysts were prepared via a modified co-precipitation method and evaluated for catalytic ozone oxidative degradation of m-cresol. An artificial neural intelligence networks (ANN) model was employed to train the experimental data to optimize the preparation parameters of catalysts, with SrFe_0.13Zr_0.87O_3-δ being the optimal catalysts. The resultant catalysts before and after reduction were then thoroughly characterized and tested for m-cresol degradation. It was found that the co-doping of Fe and Zr at the B-site and the improvement of oxygen vacancies and oxygen active species by reduction dramatically increased TOC removal rates up to 5 times compared with ozone alone, with the conversion rate of m-cresol reaching 100%. We also proposed a possible mechanism for m-cresol degradation via investigating the intermediates using GC-MS, and confirmed the good versatility of the reduced SrFe_0.13Zr_0.87O_3-δ catalyst to remove other common organic pollutants in concentrated wastewater. This work demonstrates new prospects for the use of perovskite materials in wastewater treatment.

Si Doping Enables Activity and Stability Enhancement on Atomically Dispersed Fe-Nx /C Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction in Acid

Fe-N-C represents the most promising non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells, but often suffers from poor stability in acid due to the dissolution of metal sites and the poor oxidation resistance of carbon substrates. In this work, silicon-doped iron-nitrogen-carbon (Si/Fe-N-C) catalysts were developed by in situ silicon doping and metal-polymer coordination. It was found that Si doping could not only promote the density of Fe-N_x /C active sites but also elevated the content of graphitic carbon through catalytic graphitization. The best-performing Si/Fe-N-C exhibited a half-wave potential of 0.817 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode in 0.5 m H₂ SO₄ , outperforming that of undoped Fe-N-C and most of the reported Fe-N-C catalysts. It also exhibited significantly enhanced stability at elevated temperature (≥60 °C). This work provides a new way to develop non-precious metal ORR catalysts with improved activity and stability in acidic media.
