Exploring the Impact of Visual Heat Conduction Paths on Thermal Conductivity of Polymer Composites and the Practical Applications

The theory of heat conduction paths has been widely recognized and widely studied in the research about the thermal conductivity of thermal conductive polymer composites at present. Encapsulating polymer pellets with thermally conductive fillers and processing them into thermally conductive polymer composites is a simple and effective method for constructing heat conduction paths. It is meaningful to investigate the related heat conduction mechanism of this method. Otherwise, this approach can significantly preserve the performance of the polymer substrate, making it highly valuable for practical material applications. In this work, polyethylene-octene elastomer (POE) pellets were encapsulated with thermal conductive fillers by physical absorption. Subsequently, the composite films containing heat conduction paths were fabricated using the encapsulated POE pellets through a heating press. Alumina (Al2O3), boron nitride (BN), and alumina/boron nitride hybrid (Al2O3/BN) fillers were used to prepare Al2O3@POE, BN@POE, and BN/Al2O3@POE composite films to investigate the influence of filler shapes on heat conduction path construction. The influence of the constitute and density of heat conduction paths on the thermal conductivity of composite films was analyzed by infrared thermal imaging, finite element analysis, and thermal resistance theory in detail. Owing to the reserved good adhesion and flexibility of the POE substrate, the composite films could be directly used as thermal interface materials for chip cooling, which presented a good heat dissipation effect. Furthermore, a series of integrated composite materials were prepared by the combination of encapsulated pellets with various functional films (copper foil, aluminum foil, and graphite sheet) through a one-pot heating press, exhibiting a good electromagnetic shielding effect. The performance of the composites and the corresponding preparation method demonstrate the strong significance of this research for practical applications.

Intense Left-handed Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Chiral Nematic Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Composite Films

Integrating optically active components into chiral photonic cellulose to fabricate circularly polarized luminescent materials has transformative potential in disease detection, asymmetric reactions, and anticounterfeiting techniques. However, the lack of cellulose-based left-handed circularly polarized light (L-CPL) emissions hampers the progress of these chiral functionalizations. Here, this work proposes an unprecedented strategy: incorporating a chiral nematic organization of hydroxypropyl cellulose with robust aggregation-induced emission luminogens to generate intense L-CPL emission. By utilizing N,N-dimethylformamide as a good solvent for fluorescent components and cellulose matrices, this work produces a right-handed chiral nematic structure film with a uniform appearance in reflective and fluorescent states. Remarkably, this system integrates a high asymmetric factor (0.51) and an impressive emission quantum yield (55.8%) into one fascinating composite. More meaningfully, this approach is versatile, allowing for the incorporation of luminogen derivatives emitting multicolored L-CPL. These chiral fluorescent films possess exceptional mechanical flexibility (toughness up to 0.9 MJ m-3) and structural stability even under harsh environmental exposures, making them promising for the fabrication of various products. Additionally, these films can be cast on the fabrics to reveal multilevel and durable anticounterfeiting capabilities or used as a chiral light source to induce enantioselective photopolymerization, thereby offering significant potential for diverse practical applications.

Rapid room-temperature phosphorescence chiral recognition of natural amino acids

Chiral recognition of amino acids is very important in both chemical and life sciences. Although chiral recognition with luminescence has many advantages such as being inexpensive, it is usually slow and lacks generality as the recognition module relies on structural complementarity. Here, we show that one single molecular-solid sensor, L-phenylalanine derived benzamide, can manifest the structural difference between the natural, left-handed amino acid and its right-handed counterpart via the difference of room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) irrespective of the specific chemical structure. To realize rapid and reliable sensing, the doped samples are obtained as nanocrystals from evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran solutions, which allows for efficient triplet-triplet energy transfer to the chiral analytes generated in situ from chiral amino acids. The results show that L-analytes induce strong RTP, whereas the unnatural D-analytes produce barely any afterglow. The method expands the scope of luminescence chiral sensing by lessening the requirement for specific molecular structures.

Chiral Materials for Optics and Electronics: Ready to Rise?

Chiral materials have gained burgeoning interest in optics and electronics, beyond their classical application field of drug synthesis. In this review, we summarize the diverse chiral materials developed to date and how they have been effectively applied to optics and electronics to get an understanding and vision for the further development of chiral materials for advanced optics and electronics.

Exploring the Core Parameters of CNC-Based Chiral Nematic Structures for Enhancing the Dissymmetry Factor of Right-Handed Circularly Polarized Luminescence

The chiral nematic nanostructure formed from cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) self-assembly has shown great potential as a matrix for generating circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) light with a high dissymmetry factor. Exploring the relationship between the device composition and structure and the light dissymmetry factor is crucial to a common strategy for a strongly dissymmetric CPL light. In this study, we have compared the single-layered and double-layered CNC-based CPL devices with different luminophores, such as rhodamine 6G (R6G), methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and silicon quantum dots (Si QDs). We demonstrated that forming a double-layered structure of CNCs nanocomposites is a simple but effective pathway for enhancing the CPL dissymmetry factor for CNC-based CPL materials containing different luminophores. The |g_lum| values of double-layered CNC devices (dye@CNC5||CNC5) versus that of single-layered devices (dye@CNC5) are 3.25 times for Si QDs, 3.7 times for R6G, 3.1 times for MB, and 2.78 times for CV series. The different enhancement degrees of these CNC layers with a similar thickness may be due to the different pitch numbers in the chiral nematic liquid crystal layers whose photonic band gap (PBG) has been modified to match the emission wavelengths of dyes. Furthermore, the assembled CNC nanostructure has great tolerance to the addition of nanoparticles. Gold nanorods coated with the SiO₂ layer (Au NR@SiO₂) were added for enhancing the dissymmetry factor of MB in CNC composites (named MAS devices). When the strong longitudinal plasmonic band of the Au NR@SiO₂ matched the emission wavelength of MB and the PBG of assembled CNC structures simultaneously, the increase in the g_lum factor and quantum yield of MAS composites was obtained. The good compatibility of the assembled CNC nanostructures makes it a universal platform for developing strong CPL light sources with a high dissymmetry factor.

Chiro-Optoelectronic Encodable Multilevel Thin Film Electronic Elements with Active Bio-Organic Electrolyte Layer

It is suggested that chiral photonic bio-enabled integrated thin-film electronic elements can pave the base for next-generation optoelectronic processing, including quantum coding for encryption as well as integrated multi-level logic circuits. Despite recent advances, thin-film electronics for encryption applications with large-scale reconfigurable and multi-valued logic systems are not reported to date. Herein, highly secure optoelectronic encryption logic elements are demonstrated by facilitating the humidity-sensitive helicoidal organization of chiral nematic phases of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as an active electrolyte layer combined with printed organic semiconducting channels. The ionic-strength controlled tunable photonic band gap facilitates distinguishable and quantized 13-bit electric signals triggered by repetitive changes of humidity, voltage, and the polarization state of the incident light. As a proof-of-concept, the integrated circuits responding to circularly polarized light and humidity are demonstrated as unique physically unclonable functional devices with high-level logic rarely achieved. The convergence between functional nanomaterials and the multi-valued logic thin-film electronic elements can provide optoelectronic counterfeiting, imaging, and information processing with multilevel logic nodes.

Dual-emitting cellulose nanocrystal hybrid materials with circularly polarized luminescence for anti-counterfeiting labels

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) hybrid materials with numerous optical states have great potential as anti-counterfeiting labels and information encryption materials. However, it is challenging to construct multicolor emitting materials with tunable behaviors, which can dramatically enhance anti-counterfeiting abilities. Here, free-standing composite films with vivid multi-structural colors and dual-emitting fluorescence are successfully fabricated through a host-guest coassembly strategy. The lanthanide complex and an aggregation-induced emission molecule (tetraphenylethylene derivative, TPEC) are selected as luminescent guests, which are integrated into the chiral nematic structure of CNCs. The obtained photonic films display broadband reflection across the visible spectrum, which may be attributed to the chiral nematic domains with variations in the helical pitches and helical axis orientations. Under 254 nm excitation, the film exhibits bright red emission, while blue-green emission switching occurs under 365 nm excitation. The broad reflection band of the film covers both the green and red fluorescent emission centers, and right circularly polarized luminescence emission with different dissymmetry factors is produced due to the selective reflection of the left chiral nematic structure. A large glum value up to -0.21 at 600 nm was realized. Additionally, CNC-based materials with tailored shapes are further used in anti-counterfeit tags and decorative applications.

Photoprogrammable circularly polarized phosphorescence switching of chiral helical polyacetylene thin films

The developments of pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have significantly facilitated the future integration and systemization of luminescent material in fundamental science and technological applications. Here, a type of photoinduced circularly polarized RTP materials are constructed by homogeneously dispersing phosphorescent chiral helical substituted polyacetylenes into a processable poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. These substituted polyacetylenes play vital roles in the propagation of CPL and present prominently optical characteristics with high absorption and luminescent dissymmetric factors up to 0.029 (g_abs) and 0.019 (g_lum). The oxygen consumption properties of the films under UV light irradiation endow materials with dynamic chiro-optical functionality, which can leverage of light to precisely control and manipulate the circularly polarized RTP properties with the remarkable advantages of being contactless, wireless and fatigue-resistant. Significantly, the distinct materials with dynamic properties can be used as anti-counterfeiting materials involving photoprogrammability.

Multivalued Logic for Optical Computing with Photonically Enabled Chiral Bio-organic Structures

Photonic bio-organic multiphase structures are suggested here for integrated thin-film electronic nets with multilevel logic elements for multilevel computing via a reconfigurable photonic bandgap of chiral biomaterials. Herein, inspired by an artificial intelligence system with efficient information integration and computing capability, the photonically active dielectric layer of chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystals is combined with printed-in p- and n-type organic semiconductors as a bifunctional logical element. These adaptive logic elements are capable of triggering tailored quantized electrical output signals under light with different photon energy and at the different photonic bandgaps of the active dielectric layer. The bifunctional structures enable complex memory behavior upon repetitive changes of photonic bandgap (controlled by expansion/contraction of chiral nematic pitch) and photon energy (controlled by light absorption wavelength of complementary organic semiconductor layers), exhibiting effectively a reconfigurable ternary logic response. This proof-of-concept bio-assisted multivalued logic structure facilitates an optical computing system for low-power optical information processing integrated with human-machine interfaces.

Multimode Anticounterfeiting Labels Based on a Flexible and Water-Resistant NaGdF4Yb3+,Er3+@Carbon Dots Chiral Fluorescent Cellulose Film

Advanced fluorescent anticounterfeiting technology has attracted a great deal of attention and inspired researchers to develop reliable fluorescent materials with multimodal luminescence. Herein, hydrophobic NaGdF₄:Yb³⁺,Er³⁺ nanoparticles with dual-mode luminescence were prepared through a one-step solvothermal method using oleic acid as a chelating agent and octadecene as a solvent. The as-synthesized sample was found to provide both green upconversion luminescence and blue downconversion luminescence at excitation wavelengths of 365 and 980 nm. The structure and composition analysis showed that the as-obtained samples were spherical NaGdF₄:Yb³⁺,Er³⁺@carbon dots (CDs) with a 14.5 ± 0.2 nm particle size and good dispersity in nonpolar solvents. Subsequently, NaGdF₄:Yb³⁺,Er³⁺@CDs were coated on a cholesteric nanocellulose film with structural color to prepare multimode circularly polarized fluorescent materials. The prepared composite film is flexible and water-resistant, meaning that it is very suitable for anticounterfeiting labels, not only providing a simple and rapid synthesis method with which to prepare multimode fluorescent materials but also presenting a novel anticounterfeiting technology.

Cellulose Nanocrystals' Assembly under Ionic Strength Variation: From High Orientation Ordering to a Random Orientation

We discuss the effect of the ionic strength and effective charge density on the final structural organization of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) after drying suspensions with different ionic strengths in terms of quantitative characteristics of the orientation order, rarely considered to date. We observed that increasing the ionic strength in the initial suspension results in continuous shrinking of the helical pitch length that shifts the photonic band gap to a far UV region from the visible range (from 400 to 250 nm) because of the increase in the helical twisting power from 4 to 6 μm^-1 and doubling of the twisting angle between neighboring monolayers from 5.5 to 9°. As our estimation of the Coulombic interactions demonstrates, the reduction of the Debye charge screening length below a critical value of 3 nm results in the loss of the long-range helicoidal order and the transition to a disordered morphology with random packing of nanocrystals. Subsequently, very high orientation ordering with the 2D orientation factor, S, within the range 0.8-0.9, close to the theoretical limit of 1, gradually decreased to a very low value of S = 0.1-0.2, a characteristic of random organization at high ionic strength. We suggest that the loss of the chiral ordering is a result of the reduction of repulsive forces, promoting direct physical contact with the reduced contact area during Brownian motion, combined with increased repulsive Coulombic interactions of nanocrystals at nonparallel local packing. Notably, electrolyte addition enhances chiral interactions to the point where the helical twisting power is too large and the resulting nanocrystal bundles can no longer compactly pack without creating unfavorably large free volume. We propose that the Debye charge screening length in suspensions can be used as a universal parameter for CNCs under different conditions and can be used to assess expected ordering characteristics in the solid films.
