Silane-Functionalized Carbon Dots and Their Polymerized Hybrids: From Optoelectronics to Biotherapy

Si-doped carbonized polymer dot as robust hydrophilic coating using for high efficiency antifogging

Hydrophilic coating can prevent surface from fogging but its application is limited by low mechanical performance. In this study, a hydrophilic coating was prepared by crosslinking the Si-doped carbonized polymer dot (Si-CPD) with 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and ethylene oxide (EO). The hydrophilic coating can be used as robust hydrophilic anti-fogging coating. The Si-CPD derived from ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and aminopropyl oligosiloxanes (APOS) was successfully prepared via one-step hydrothermal method. Then, a resin solution was prepared by mixing Si-CPD, GPTMS and EO. Epoxy group of GPTMS and EO can react with amino group of Si-CPD. Finally, a composite coating with antifogging function can be obtained by simple heating curing. Due to the introduction of hydroxyl which derived from EO, the coating shows excellent antifogging performance. Meanwhile, the presence of inorganic component endows the coating with outstanding mechanical performance. The coating has great potential in related applications, such as optical lenses, mirrors and other transparency substrates.

The Emerging Star of Carbon Luminescent Materials: Exploring the Mysteries of the Nanolight of Carbon Dots for Optoelectronic Applications

Carbon dots (CDs), a class of carbon-based nanomaterials with dimensions less than 10 nm, have attracted significant interest since their discovery. They possess numerous excellent properties, such as tunability of photoluminescence, environmental friendliness, low cost, and multifunctional applications. Recently, a large number of reviews have emerged that provide overviews of their synthesis, properties, applications, and their composite functionalization. The application of CDs in the field of optoelectronics has also seen unprecedented development due to their excellent optical properties, but reviews of them in this field are relatively rare. With the idea of deepening and broadening the understanding of the applications of CDs in the field of optoelectronics, this review for the first time provides a detailed summary of their applications in the field of luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), solar cells, and photodetectors. In addition, the definition, categories, and synthesis methods of CDs are briefly introduced. It is hoped that this review can bring scholars more and deeper understanding in the field of optoelectronic applications of CDs to further promote the practical applications of CDs.

Carbon Dots: A Review with Focus on Sustainability

Carbon dots (CDs) are an emerging class of nanomaterials with attractive optical properties, which promise to enable a variety of applications. An important and timely question is whether CDs can become a functional and sustainable alternative to incumbent optical nanomaterials, notably inorganic quantum dots. Herein, the current CD literature is comprehensively reviewed as regards to their synthesis and function, with a focus on sustainability aspects. The study quantifies why it is attractive that CDs can be synthesized with biomass as the sole starting material and be free from toxic and precious metals and critical raw materials. It further describes and analyzes employed pretreatment, chemical-conversion, purification, and processing procedures, and highlights current issues with the usage of solvents, the energy and material efficiency, and the safety and waste management. It is specially shown that many reported synthesis and processing methods are concerningly wasteful with the utilization of non-sustainable solvents and energy. It is finally recommended that future studies should explicitly consider and discuss the environmental influence of the selected starting material, solvents, and generated byproducts, and that quantitative information on the required amounts of solvents, consumables, and energy should be provided to enable an evaluation of the presented methods in an upscaled sustainability context.

Dynamic Room Temperature Phosphorescence of Silane-Functionalized Carbon Dots Confining within Silica for Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

Room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials with long-lived, excitation-dependent, and time-dependent phosphorescence are highly desirable but very hard to achieve. Herein, this work reports a rational strategy of multiple wavelength excitation and time-dependent dynamic RTP color by confining silane-functionalized carbon dots (CDs) in a silica matrix (Si-CDs@SiO2). The Si-CDs@SiO2 possesses unique green-light-excitation and a change in phosphorescence color from yellow to green. A slow-decaying phosphorescence at 500 nm with a lifetime of 1.28 s and a fast-decaying phosphorescence at 580 nm with a lifetime of 0.90 s are observed under 365 nm of irradiation, which originated from multiple surface triplet states of the Si-CDs@SiO2. Given the unique dynamic RTP properties, the Si-CDs@SiO2 are demonstrated for applications in fingerprint recognition and multidimensional dynamic information encryption. These findings will open an avenue to explore dynamic phosphorescent materials and significantly broaden their applications.

Carbon dots derived from citric acid and urea as fluorometric probe for determining melamine contamination in infant formula sample

Melamine has been intentionally added into food products to increase the protein count at less cost, especially in dairy products for infant resulting in serious adverse effects on health of consumers. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a method to quantify melamine in dairy products based on the change of fluorescent properties of carbon dots (CDs) as sensing probe. CDs with green-fluorescent emission were synthesized from citric acid and urea under microwave irradiation. The synthesized CDs emitted fluorescence at the maximum wavelength of 538 nm with excitation wavelength of 410 nm. Thus, they provided high sensitivity and selectivity on melamine detection by which fluorescent emission of the CDs was increasingly quenched upon increasing melamine concentrations. Optimal conditions for melamine determination using the CDs was under pH 6, volume ratio between CDs and sample of 2:8 and reaction time of 15 min. The developed method provided high precision of melamine determination with less than 5% of %RSD (n = 5), wide detection range from 1.0 to 200.0 ppm, and high sensitivity with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.47 ppm and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.56 ppm, which is within the regulated level by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States for melamine in dairy products. Several analytical characterization techniques were conducted to elucidate the reaction mechanism between CDs and melamine, and the hydrogen bonding interaction was proposed.

Zero-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials for Fluorescent Sensing and Imaging

Advances in nanotechnology and nanomaterials have attracted considerable interest and play key roles in scientific innovations in diverse fields. In particular, increased attention has been focused on carbon-based nanomaterials exhibiting diverse extended structures and unique properties. Among these materials, zero-dimensional structures, including fullerenes, carbon nano-onions, carbon nanodiamonds, and carbon dots, possess excellent bioaffinities and superior fluorescence properties that make these structures suitable for application to environmental and biological sensing, imaging, and therapeutics. This review provides a systematic overview of the classification and structural properties, design principles and preparation methods, and optical properties and sensing applications of zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. Recent interesting breakthroughs in the sensitive and selective sensing and imaging of heavy metal pollutants, hazardous substances, and bioactive molecules as well as applications in information encryption, super-resolution and photoacoustic imaging, and phototherapy and nanomedicine delivery are the main focus of this review. Finally, future challenges and prospects of these materials are highlighted and envisaged. This review presents a comprehensive basis and directions for designing, developing, and applying fascinating fluorescent sensors fabricated based on zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials for specific requirements in numerous research fields.

Flexible Transparent Hydrophobic Coating Films with Excellent Scratch Resistance Using Si-Doped Carbonized Polymer Dots as Building Blocks

Flexible transparent hydrophobic coating films with excellent scratch resistance have important applications in many fields, especially for optical materials. Herein, a hydrophobic composite coating film was prepared and used as a polymer film protective material by combining 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS)-modified Si-doped carbonized polymer dots (Si-CPDs) with mono-trimethoxysilyl-terminated poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS). The Si-CPDs derived from tetramethyl disiloxane propylamine tetraacetic acid and multi-amino oligosiloxanes were successfully prepared via one-step hydrothermal method and then grafted by GPTMS to obtain modified Si-CPDs (mSi-CPDs). Among them, mSi-CPDs act as a matrix layer, and PDMS acts as a low-surface energy layer. Cross-linking the Si-O-Si network of the coating film was formed through sol-gel chemistry. Driven by the hydrophilic-hydrophobic effect, PDMS trends to aggregate at the film surface, thus avoiding the phase separation which can affect transparency. The highly cross-linked network and the presence of hard silica core provide a high hardness to stand the steel-wool scratch. Flexible polymer chains impart the coating film an outstanding bendability. Introduction of PDMS makes the coating film possess hydrophobicity and anti-graffiti function.

Siloxene Nanosheets and Their Hybrid Gel Glasses for Broad-Band Optical Limiting

With the development of laser technology, the research of novel laser protection materials is of great significance. In this work, dispersible siloxene nanosheets (SiNSs) with a thickness of about 1.5 nm are prepared by the top-down topological reaction method. Based on the Z-scan and optical limiting testing under the visible-near IR ranges nanosecond laser, the broad-band nonlinear optical properties of the SiNSs and their hybrid gel glasses are investigated. The results show that the SiNSs have outstanding nonlinear optical properties. Meanwhile, the SiNSs hybrid gel glasses also exhibit high transmittance and excellent optical limiting capabilities. It demonstrates that SiNSs are promising materials for broad-band nonlinear optical limiting and even have potential applications in optoelectronics.

Antibacterial and antibiofilm mechanisms of carbon dots: a review

Due to the increasing bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics, developing safe and effective approaches to combat infections caused by bacteria and biofilms has become an urgent clinical problem. Recently, carbon dots (CDs) have received great attention as a promising alternative to conventional antimicrobial agents due to their excellent antimicrobial efficacy and biocompatibility. Although CDs have been widely used in the field of antibacterial applications, their antibacterial and antibiofilm mechanisms have not been systematically discussed. This review provides a systematic overview on the complicated mechanisms of antibacterial and antibiofilm CDs based on recent development.

Defects and Structural Limitation-Induced Carbon Dots-Silica Hybrid Materials with Ultralong Room Temperature Phosphorescence

Carbon dots-based room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials have attracted widespread attention owing to their excellent optical properties. However, there still is a challenge to fabricate carbon dots-based materials simultaneously showing long RTP lifetime and high phosphorescent quantum yield. Herein, we have designed a kind of carbon dots-silica hybrid material that can produce RTP emission with ultralong lifetime and also high phosphorescent quantum yield (1.3 s and 11.22%). Both chemical and optical analytical characterizations indicate the source of the outstanding RTP performance as the synergistic strategy of abundant electron traps, highly rigid network, and stable covalent bond. The findings provide a new design idea to achieve novel carbon dots-based RTP materials, showing broad application prospects in optical anticounterfeiting, optoelectronics, and others.

Ultra-Broadband Random Laser and White-Light Emissive Carbon Dots/Crystal In-Situ Hybrids

The continuous white-light emission of carbon dots (CDs) can be applied to producing multicolor laser emissions by one single medium. Meanwhile, the solid-state emission greatly contributes to its practical application. In this work, a strategy to realize the in-situ hybridization of silane-functionalized CDs (SiCDs) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid trimethyl ester (Et3BTC) by a one-pot solvothermal method is reported. Significantly, the SiCDs/Et3BTC hybrid crystals exhibit ultra-broadband random laser emission over the near ultraviolet-visible region under 265 nm nanosecond pulsed laser excitation. The wavelength region of laser emission is achieved from 315 to 600 nm within an emission band of CDs-based materials. It is worth noting that the wavelength range of the laser is wider than the previously reported works. It is proposed that the continuous white-light emission of SiCDs caused by multiple fluorescence centers mainly gives rise to the broadband random laser emission. Moreover, the crystals are conducive to forming resonance and realizing solid-state laser emission. This in-situ method is expected to enable a more convenient, cheaper, and greener approach to prepare luminescent hybrids for application in multicolor laser displays, multi-level laser anti-counterfeiting, supercontinuum light sources, and so on.
