Abstract
The reduction of hazardous nitric oxide emissions remains a significant ecological challenge. Despite the variety of possibilities, sorbents able to capture low concentrations of NO from flue gas with high selectivity are still in demand. In this work a new type of mesoporous xerogel material highly loaded with ultrastable Blatter radicals (BTR, >60 % by mass) that act as selective NO sorption sites is developed. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy evidences reversible NO sorption in nanometer-scale pores of BTR-based xerogels and indicates the high NO capacity of such radical-rich sorbent. Efficient NO capture from model flue gas mixture is also evidenced in experiments with a fixed bed reactor. Such advanced properties of new materials as selectivity, strong binding with NO and an ability for mild regeneration via thermodesorption promote them for future ecological applications.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenously produced gasotransmitter involved in many physiological processes that are integral to proper cellular functioning. Due to its profound anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, H2S plays important roles in preventing inflammatory skin disorders and improving wound healing. Transdermal H2S delivery is a therapeutically viable option for the management of such disorders. However, current small-molecule H2S donors are not optimally suited for transdermal delivery and typically generate electrophilic byproducts that may lead to undesired toxicity. Here, we demonstrate that H2S release from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) bearing coordinatively unsaturated metal centers is a promising alternative for controlled transdermal delivery of H2S. Gas sorption measurements and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies of 11 MOFs support that the Mg-based framework Mg2(dobdc) (dobdc4- = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) is uniquely well-suited for transdermal H2S delivery due to its strong yet reversible binding of H2S, high capacity (14.7 mmol/g at 1 bar and 25 °C), and lack of toxicity. In addition, Rietveld refinement of synchrotron PXRD data from H2S-dosed Mg2(dobdc) supports that the high H2S capacity of this framework arises due to the presence of three distinct binding sites. Last, we demonstrate that transdermal delivery of H2S from Mg2(dobdc) is sustained over a 24 h period through porcine skin. Not only is this significantly longer than sodium sulfide but this represents the first example of controlled transdermal delivery of pure H2S gas. Overall, H2S-loaded Mg2(dobdc) is an easily accessible, solid-state source of H2S, enabling safe storage and transdermal delivery of this therapeutically relevant gas.

Abstract
Engineered nanomaterials are promising in biomedical application. However, insufficient understanding of their biocompatibility at the cellular and organic levels prevents their widely biomedical applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polydopamine (PDA)-modified ZIF-8 are chosen as model nanomaterials due to its emergent role in nanomedicine. In vitro, the results demonstrate that the PDA coating greatly alleviates the cytotoxicity of ZIF-8 to RAW264.7, LO2, and HST6, which represent three different cell types in liver organs. Mechanistically, ZIF-8 entering into the cells can greatly induce the reactive oxygen species generation, which subsequently induces cell cycle delay and autophagy, ultimately leads to enhanced cytotoxicity. Further, human umbilical vein endothelial cells model and zebrafish embryos assay also confirm that PDA can compromise the ZIF-8 toxicity significantly. This study reveals that PDA-coated MOFs nanomaterials show great potential in nano-based drug delivery systems .

Abstract
Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Abstract
The treatment or conversion of air pollutants with a low generation of secondary toxic substances has become a hot topic in indoor air pollution abatement. Herein, we used triangle-shaped Ag nanoparticles coupled with SnO2 for efficient photocatalytic NO removal. Ag triangular nanoparticles (TNPs) were synthesized by the photoreduction method and SnO2 was coupled by a simple chemical impregnation process. The photocatalytic NO removal activity results show that the modification with Ag TNPs significantly boosted the removal performance up to 3.4 times higher than pristine SnO2. The underlying roles of Ag TNPs in NO removal activity improvement are due to some advantages of Ag TNPs. Moreover, the Ag TNPs contributed photogenerated holes as the main active species toward enhancing the NO oxidation reaction. In particular, the selectivity toward green products significantly improved from 52.78% (SnO2) to 86.99% (Ag TNPs/SnO2). The formation of reactive radicals under light irradiation was also verified by DMPO spin-trapping experiments. This work provides a potential candidate for visible-light photocatalytic NO removal with low toxic byproduct generation.

Abstract
Developing adsorbent materials with high adsorptive dephosphorization (ADP) is significant for treating phosphate from aqueous solutions and eutrophic water. Herein, the MIL-101(Cr) framework was entrapped ionic liquid (IL) of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumbromide ionic liquid ([C4mem]+[Br]-) using a ship-in-a-bottle approach to obtain novel adsorbents [C4mem]+[Br]-@MIL-101(Cr) contained varied IL contents, namely C4mem@MIL-101. The characterization results revealed that the formed [C4mem]+[Br]- molecules interacted with the MIL-101(Cr) frameworks, enhanced their stability, and offered additional adsorption sites. The batch adsorptions of phosphate showed that the optimized C4mem@MIL-101 adsorbent loaded with ~ 7% IL-based N content had the highest phosphate absorbing capacity of ~ 200 mg/g, outperforming the pristine MIL-101(Cr) and other adsorbents. The ADP efficiency was facilitated in the acidic media, where the phosphate ions of H2PO4- and HPO42- captured onto the C4mem@MIL-101 via several interactions, including electrostatic attraction, H-bonds, and chemical interactions. In the meantime, the coexisting anions diminished the phosphate adsorption because they competed with the pollutants at adsorption sites. Furthermore, phosphate treatment under the continuous fixed-bed conditions showed that 1 g of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-mixed C4mem@MIL-101 pellets purified 25 l of water containing phosphate with a 1 mg/l concentration. The results suggest that the novel [C4mem]+[Br]-@MIL-101(Cr) structure had a high potential for treating phosphate in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Monitoring endogenous glutathione (GSH) levels in living cells is essential for cancer diagnose and treatment. In this work, GSH responsive fluorescent nanoprobe with turn-on property was constructed using Zn-modified porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (PCN-224-Zn). The introduced Zn2+ could quench the fluorescence of PCN-224 by the metallization of organic ligand (TCPP) and serves as sensing site for GSH. When exposed to GSH, the strong binding affinity of GSH generates the formation of Zn-GSH complex, eliminating the fluorescence quenching effect of Zn2+. Based on the constructed PCN-224-Zn nanoprobe, selective determination of GSH was achieved in the range of 0.01-6 μM with a detection limit of 1.5 nM. Furthermore, the constructed nanoprobe can realize the fluorescence imaging of endogenous GSH in MCF-7 and HeLa cells. Meanwhile, PCN-224-Zn could also monitor GSH in cell lysate with recovery rates from 93.8 % to 102.3 %. The performance of PCN-224-Zn demonstrates its capacities in the application of fluorescence sensing and bio-imaging fields.

Abstract
Nitrogen oxides are adverse poisonous gases present in the atmosphere and having detrimental effects on the human health and environment. In this work, we propose a new type of mesoporous materials capable of capturing nitrogen monoxide (NO) from air. The designed material combines the robust Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 silica scaffold and ultrastable Blatter-type radicals acting as NO traps. Using in situ electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we demonstrate that NO capture from air is selective and reversible at practical conditions, thus making Blatter radical-decorated silica highly promising for environmental applications.

Abstract
Adsorption is a potential technology that is expected to meet NOx ultra-low emission standards and achieve the recovery of NO2. In this study, the adsorption/desorption behavior of NOx with competitive gases (e.g., H2O(g) and CO2) was studied on MFI zeolites with different Si/Al ratios and under different relative humidity (0~90% RH). Sample characterization of self-synthesizing zeolites was conducted by means of X-ray diffraction, Ar adsorption-desorption, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that low-silica HZSM-5(35) showed the highest NOx adsorption capacity of 297.8 μmol/g (RH = 0) and 35.4 μmol/g (RH = 90%) compared to that of other adsorbents, and the efficiency loss factor of NOx adsorption capacity at 90%RH ranged from 85.3% to 88.1%. A water-resistance strategy was proposed for NOx multicomponent competitive adsorption combined with dynamic breakthrough tests and static water vapor adsorption. The presence of 14% O2 and lower adsorption temperature (25 °C) favored NOx adsorption, while higher CO2 concentrations (~10.5%) had less effect. The roll-up factor (η) was positively correlated with lower Si/Al ratios and higher H2O(g) concentrations. Unlike Silicalite-1, HZSM-5(35) exhibited an acceptable industrial desorption temperature window of NO2 (255~265 °C). This paper aims to provide a theoretical guideline for the rational selection of NOx adsorbents for practical applications.

Abstract
In the present work, ab initio calculations and Monte Carlo simulations were combined to investigate the effect of linker functionalization on nitric oxide (NO)’s storage ability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The binding energy (BE) of nitric oxide with a set of forty-two strategically selected, functionalized benzenes was investigated using Density Functional Theory calculations at the RI-DSD-BLYP/def2-TZVPP level of theory. It was found that most of the functional groups (FGs) increased the interaction strength compared to benzene. Phenyl hydrogen sulfate (–OSO3H) was the most promising among the set of ligands, with an enhancement of 150%. The organic linker of IRMOF-8 was modified with the three top-performing functional groups (–OSO3H, –OPO3H2, –SO3H). Their ability for NO adsorption was investigated using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations at an ambient temperature and a wide pressure range. The results showed great enhancement in NO uptake constituting the above-mentioned FGs, suggesting them to be promising modification candidates in a plethora of porous materials.

Abstract
A dual-channel probe was developed, based on a novel composite metal organic frameworks (ZnMOF-74@Al-MOF) for glyphosate determination through ratio fluorescence and colorimetric methods. The prepared probe can not only recognize and combine glyphosate by introducing copper ion into the MOF, but also possess peroxidase-like catalytic activity. The recognition of target glyphosate brought about changes relative to its concentration on fluorescence intensity and ultraviolet absorption. And, the high specific surface area and porosity of porphyrin MOF provides the developed probe with more response opportunities to afford a better detection performance for glyphosate. Under optimum conditions, the copper ion-mediated method exhibited good detection performance for glyphosate with low detection limits (0.070 and 0.092 μg mL-1 for fluorescence and colorimetric techniques, respectively). Furthermore, the possible mechanisms of the fluorescence quenching and the peroxidase-like catalytic of the probe were also explored. This dual-channel method was applied to monitor glyphosate degradation in environmental samples and satisfactory results were obtained.

Abstract
Nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (nMOFs) have gained considerable attention with significant potential applications. Although great efforts have been devoted to designing and fabricating nanoscaffold structures, approaches of deliberately regulating the intrinsic functionality of nMOFs have been poorly explored. Herein, we report a simple and novel strategy to regulate the catalytic and fluorescence quenching behaviors of nMOFs through coordination-driven self-assembly. As a proof-of-concept, we synthesized a synergistic and stable MOF-metal nanocomposite by loading platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) on a commonly used Fe-MOF, i.e., MIL-88B-NH2/Pt, as a MOF composite model for exploration. On one hand, the complexation with ATP effectively broke the pH limitation of the peroxidase-mimicking MIL-88B-NH2/Pt nanozyme, bringing a 10-fold increased catalytic activity under alkaline condition. Based on the distinct catalytic enhancement between ATP and other nucleotides, real-time monitoring of apyrase activity as well as colorimetric detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was performed. On the other hand, interactions of MIL-88B-NH2/Pt with fluorescent DNA were tolerant of different nucleic acids and, more importantly, were further manipulated by inorganic molecules. As a result, H2O2 could only trigger the release of a G-rich sequence, while phosphates could readily induce desorption of various DNA molecules with varying lengths, sequences, and fluorescent dyes. Accordingly, fluorescent DNA and MIL-88B-NH2/Pt as functional probe-quencher pairs were proposed, allowing the establishment of a fluorescence bioassay for ALP and PPase detection and Boolean logic calculations. This work offers a means to tune the intrinsic activities of nMOFs by surface engineering, benefiting design of functional nanomaterials and development of advanced biosensing systems.
