Exploiting the Fracture in Metal-Organic Frameworks: A General Strategy for Bifunctional Atom-Precise Nanocluster/ZIF-8(300 °C) Composites

Platform for the Immobilizing of Ultrasmall Pd Clusters for Carbonylation: In Situ Self-Templating Fabrication of ZIF-8 on ZnO

Incorporating metal clusters into the confined cavities of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to form MOF-supported catalysts has attracted considerable research interest with regard to carbonylation reactions. Herein, a self-templating method is used to prepare the zinc oxide (ZnO)-supported core-shell catalyst ZnO@Pd/ZIF-8. This facile strategy controls the growth of metal sources on the ZIF-8 shell layer and avoids the metal diffusion or aggregation problems of the conventional synthesis method. The characteristics of the catalysts show that the palladium (Pd) clusters are highly dispersed with an average particle size of ≈1.2 nm, making them excellent candidates as a catalyst for carbonylation under mild conditions. The optimal catalyst (1.25-ZnO@Pd/ZIF-8) exhibits excellent activity in synthesizing α, β-alkynyl ketones under 1 atm of carbon monooxide (CO), and the conversion rate of 1, 3-diphenylprop-2-yn-1-one is 3.09 and 3.87 times more than those of Pd/ZIF-8 and Pd2+, respectively, for the first 2 h. Moreover, the 1.25-ZnO@Pd/ZIF-8 is recyclable, showing negligible metal leaching, and, under the conditions used in this investigation, can be reused at least five times without considerable loss in its catalytic efficiency. This protocol can also be applied with other nucleophile reagents to synthesize esters, amides, and acid products.

Bottom-Up Construction of Metal-Organic Framework Loricae on Metal Nanoclusters with Consecutive Single Nonmetal Atom Tuning for Tailored Catalysis

The introduction of single or multiple heterometal atoms into metal nanoparticles is a well-known strategy for altering their structures (compositions) and properties. However, surface single nonmetal atom doping is challenging and rarely reported. For the first time, we have developed synthetic methods, realizing "surgery"-like, successive surface single nonmetal atom doping, replacement, and addition for ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (metal nanoclusters, NCs), and successfully synthesized and characterized three novel bcc metal NCs Au38I(S-Adm)19, Au38S(S-Adm)20, and Au38IS(S-Adm)19 (S-Adm: 1-adamantanethiolate). The influences of single nonmetal atom replacement and addition on the NC structure and optical properties (including absorption and photoluminescence) were carefully investigated, providing insights into the structure (composition)-property correlation. Furthermore, a bottom-up method was employed to construct a metal-organic framework (MOF) on the NC surface, which did not essentially alter the metal NC structure but led to the partial release of surface ligands and stimulated metal NC activity for catalyzing p-nitrophenol reduction. Furthermore, surface MOF construction enhanced NC stability and water solubility, providing another dimension for tunning NC catalytic activity by modifying MOF functional groups.

Designing Different Heterometallic Organic Frameworks by Heteroatom and Second Metal Doping Strategies for the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered one of the most significant electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Hence, a series of novel N,S-codoped Ni-based heterometallic organic framework (HMOF) (NiM-bptz-HMOF, M = Co, Zn, and Mn; bptz = 2,5-bis((3-pyridyl)methylthio)thiadiazole) precatalysts are constructed by the heteroatom and second metal doping strategies. The effective combination of the two strategies promotes electronic conductivity and optimizes the electronic structure of the metal. By regulation of the type and proportion of metal ions, the electrochemical performance of the OER can be improved. Among them, the optimized Ni6Zn1-bptz-HMOF precatalyst exhibits the best performance with an overpotential of 268 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 72.5 mV dec-1. This work presents a novel strategy for the design of modest heteroatom-doped OER catalysts.

Boosted ability of ZIF-8 for early-stage adsorption and degradation of chemical warfare agent simulants

Efficient adsorption of hazardous substances from the environment is crucial owing to the considerable risks they pose to both humans and ecosystems. Consequently, the development of porous materials with strong adsorption capabilities for hazardous substances, such as chemical warfare agents (CWAs), is pivotal for safeguarding human lives. Specifically, the early-stage adsorption proficiency of the adsorbents plays a vital role in determining their effectiveness as ideal adsorbents. Herein, we report the efficient adsorption of CWA simulants using thermally treated ZIF-8 (T-ZIF-8). The T-ZIF-8 samples were prepared by subjecting ZIF-8 to a simple thermal treatment, which resulted in a more positive surface charge with extra open metal sites. Although the pore volume of T-ZIF-8 decreased after thermal treatment, the positive surface charge of T-ZIF-8 proved advantageous for the adsorption of the CWA simulants. As a result, the adsorption capacity of T-ZIF-8 for the CWA simulants improved compared to that of pure ZIF-8. Notably, T-ZIF-8 exhibited a remarkably enhanced adsorption ability in the early stage of exposure to the CWA simulants, possibly due to the effective polar interactions between T-ZIF-8 and the simulants via the electron-rich components within the CWA simulants. Moreover, the enhanced adsorption capacity of T-ZIF-8 led to the fast degradation of simulant compared to pure ZIF-8. T-ZIF-8 also demonstrated excellent stability over three adsorption cycles. These findings highlight that T-ZIF-8 is an outstanding material for the early-stage adsorption and degradation of CWA simulants, offering high effectiveness and stability.

Highly Efficient Spatial Three-Level CoP@ZIF-8/pNF Based on Modified Porous NF as Dual Functional Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

The development of non-noble metal catalysts for water electrolysis to product hydrogen meets the current strategic need for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. However, complex preparation methods, low catalytic activity and high energy consumption still limit the application of these materials. Herein, in this work we prepared a three-level structured electrocatalyst of CoP@ZIF-8 growing on modified porous nickel foam (pNF) via the natural growing and phosphating process. In contrast to the common NF, the modified NF constructs a large number of micron-sized pores carrying the nanoscaled catalytic CoP@ZIF-8 on the millimeter-sized skeleton of bare NF, which significantly increases the specific surface area and catalyst load of the material. Thanks to the unique spatial three-level porous structure, electrochemical tests showed a low overpotential of 77 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 for HER, and 226 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and 331 mV at 50 mA cm^-2 for OER. The result obtained from testing the electrode's overall water splitting performance is also satisfactory, needing only 1.57 V at 10 mA cm^-2. Additionally, this electrocatalyst showed great stability for more than 55 h when a 10 mA cm^-2 constant current was applied to it. Based on the above characteristics, the present work demonstrates the promising application of this material to the electrolysis of water for the production of hydrogen and oxygen.

CuCo Nanoparticle, Pd(II), and l-Proline Trifunctionalized UiO-67 Catalyst for Three-Step Sequential Asymmetric Reactions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become a promising support for different active sites to construct multifunctional and heterogeneous catalysts. However, the related investigation mainly focuses on introducing one or two active sites into MOFs and trifunctional catalysts have been very rarely reported. Herein, non-noble CuCo alloy nanoparticles, Pd²⁺, and l-proline, as encapsulated active species, functional organic linkers, and active metal nodes, respectively, were successfully decorated to UiO-67 to construct a chiral trifunctional catalyst by the one-step method, which was further applied to asymmetric three-step sequential oxidation of aromatic alcohols/Suzuki coupling/asymmetric aldol reactions with excellent oxidation and coupling performance (yields up to 95 and 96%, respectively), as well as good enantioselectivities (ee_anti value up to 73%) in asymmetric aldol reactions. The heterogeneous catalyst can be reused at least five times without obvious deactivation due to the strong interaction between the MOFs and the active sites. This work provides an effective strategy to construct multifunctional catalysts via the introduction and combination of three or more of active sites, including encapsulated active species, functional organic linkers, and active metal nodes, into stable MOFs.
