Sodiophilic Mg2+ -Decorated Ti3 C2 MXene for Dendrite-Free Sodium Metal Batteries with Carbonate-Based Electrolytes

A Critical Review on Room-Temperature Sodium-Sulfur Batteries: From Research Advances to Practical Perspectives

Room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT-Na/S) batteries are promising alternatives for next-generation energy storage systems with high energy density and high power density. However, some notorious issues are hampering the practical application of RT-Na/S batteries. Besides, the working mechanism of RT-Na/S batteries under practical conditions such as high sulfur loading, lean electrolyte, and low capacity ratio between the negative and positive electrode (N/P ratio), is of essential importance for practical applications, yet the significance of these parameters has long been disregarded. Herein, it is comprehensively reviewed recent advances on Na metal anode, S cathode, electrolyte, and separator engineering for RT-Na/S batteries. The discrepancies between laboratory research and practical conditions are elaborately discussed, endeavors toward practical applications are highlighted, and suggestions for the practical values of the crucial parameters are rationally proposed. Furthermore, an empirical equation to estimate the actual energy density of RT-Na/S pouch cells under practical conditions is rationally proposed for the first time, making it possible to evaluate the gravimetric energy density of the cells under practical conditions. This review aims to reemphasize the vital importance of the crucial parameters for RT-Na/S batteries to bridge the gaps between laboratory research and practical applications.

Anode-Free Sodium Metal Pouch Cell Using Cu3P Nanowires In Situ Grown on Current Collector

Anode-free sodium metal battery (AFSMB) promises high energy density but suffers from the difficulty of maintaining high cycling stability. Nonuniform sodium (Na) deposition on the current collector is largely responsible for capacity decay in the cycling process of AFSMB. Here, a unique copper phosphide (Cu3P) nanowire is constructed on copper (Cu3P@Cu) as a sodium deposition substrate by an in situ growth method. Superior electrochemical performance of Cu3P@Cu anode is delivered in asymmetric cells with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% for over 800 cycles at 1 mA cm-2 with 1 mA h cm-2. The symmetric cell of Cu3P@Cu displayed a cycling lifespan of over 2000 h at 2 mA cm-2 with 1 mA h cm-2. Cryo-transmission electron microscope characterization and first principles calculation revealed that the low Na+ absorption energy and low Na+ diffusion energy barrier on Na3P promoted uniform Na nucleation and deposition, thus enhancing the Na surface stability. Moreover, anode-free Na3V2(PO4)3//Cu3P@Cu full pouch cell delivered a considerable cycling capacity of ≈15 mA h in 170 cycles, demonstrating its practical feasibility.

MXene-Based Current Collectors for Advanced Rechargeable Batteries

As an indispensable component of rechargeable batteries, the current collector plays a crucial role in supporting the electrode materials and collecting the accumulated electrical energy. However, some key issues, like uneven resources, high weight percentage, electrolytic corrosion, and high-voltage instability, cannot meet the growing need for rechargeable batteries. In recent years, MXene-based current collectors have achieved considerable achievements due to its unique structure, large surface area, and high conductivity. The related research has increased significantly. Nonetheless, a comprehensive review of this area is seldom. Herein the applications and progress of MXene in current collector are systematically summarized and discussed. Meanwhile, some challenges and future directions are presented.

3D flower-like hollow MXene@MoS2 heterostructure for fast sodium storage

Constructing an anode with fast electron transport and high cycling stability is important but challenging for large-scale applications of sodium-ion batteries (SIB). In this study, hierarchical flower-like MXene structures were synthesized using poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microsphere as templates. Subsequently, a straightforward hydrothermal reaction was utilized to anchor small-sized MoS2 nanosheets. The resulting MXene@MoS2 heterostructure exhibits a distinctive three-dimensional (3D) porous hollow architecture. This structure effectively addresses challenges related to self-aggregation of MoS2 nanosheets and volume expansion of the electrode material during Na+ insertion/extraction processes. Furthermore, the robust hetero-interface supports fast and stable electron transfer, thereby enhancing electrochemical reaction kinetics. The prepared MXene@MoS2 electrode demonstrates the specific capacity of 682.1 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A/g and the reversible capacity of 494.4 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 5 A/g. It is noteworthy that the full battery assembled with the composite material as the anode can still maintain the capacity of 456.2 mA h g-1 after 80 cycles at 0.5 A/g. This outstanding reversible capacity and sustained stability over numerous cycles highlights its potential for a wide range of applications.

Ultrahigh areal capacity and long cycling stability of sodium metal anodes boosted using a 3D-printed sodiophilic MXene/rGO microlattice aerogel

Sodium metal has emerged as a highly promising anode material for sodium-based batteries, owing to its intrinsic advantages, including its high theoretical capacity, low working plateau and low cost. However, the uncontrolled formation of sodium dendrites accompanied by unrestricted volume expansion severely limits its application. To tackle these issues, we propose an approach to address these issues by adopting a three-dimensional (3D) structure of Ti3C2Tx/reduced graphene oxide (Ti3C2Tx/rGO) constructed by a direct-ink writing (DIW) 3D printing technique as the Na metal anode host electrode. The combination of the 3D-printed rGO skeleton offering artificial porous structures and the incorporation of sodiophilic Ti3C2Tx nanosheets provides abundant nucleation sites and promotes uniform sodium metal deposition. This specially designed architecture significantly enhances the Na metal cycling stability by effectively inhibiting dendrite formation. The experimental results show that the designed Ti3C2Tx/rGO electrode can achieve a high coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.91% after 1800 cycles (3600 h) at 2 mA cm-2 with 2 mA h cm-2. Notably, the adopted electrodes exhibit a long life span of more than 1400 h with a high CE over 99.93% when measured with an ultra-high capacity of 50 mA h cm-2 at 5 mA cm-2. Furthermore, a 3D-printed full cell consisting of a Na@Ti3C2Tx/rGO anode and a 3D-printed Na3V2(PO4)3C-rGO (NVP@C-rGO) cathode was successfully demonstrated. This 3D-printed cell could provide a notable capacity of 85.3 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1 after 500 cycles. The exceptional electrochemical performance achieved by the 3D-printed full cell paves the way for the development of practical sodium metal anodes.

Fluorinated porous frameworks enable robust anode-less sodium metal batteries

Sodium metal batteries hold great promise for energy-dense and low-cost energy storage technology but are severely impeded by catastrophic dendrite issue. State-of-the-art strategies including sodiophilic seeding/hosting interphase design manifest great success on dendrite suppression, while neglecting unavoidable interphase-depleted Na+ before plating, which poses excessive Na use, sacrificed output voltage and ultimately reduced energy density. We here demonstrate that elaborate-designed fluorinated porous framework could simultaneously realize superior sodiophilicity yet negligible interphase-consumed Na+ for dendrite-free and durable Na batteries. As elucidated by physicochemical and theoretical characterizations, well-defined fluorinated edges on porous channels are responsible for both high affinities ensuring uniform deposition and low reactivity rendering superior Na+ utilization for plating. Accordingly, synergistic performance enhancement is achieved with stable 400 cycles and superior plateau to sloping capacity ratio in anode-free batteries. Proof-of-concept pouch cells deliver an energy density of 325 Watt-hours per kilogram and robust 300 cycles under anode-less condition, opening an avenue with great extendibility for the practical deployment of metal batteries.

Highly Stable Potassium Metal Anodes with Controllable Thickness and Area Capacity

K metal battery is a kind of high-energy-density storage device with economic advantages. However, due to the dendrite growth and difficult processing characteristics, it is difficult to prepare stable K metal anode with thin thickness and fixed area capacity, which severely limits its development. In this work, a multi-functional 3D skeleton (rGCA) is synthesized by simple vacuum filtration and thermal reduction, and K metal anodes with controllable thickness and area capacity (K content) can be fabricated by changing the raw material mass and graphene layer spacing of rGCA. Moreover, the graphene sheet layer of rGCA can relax stress and relieve volume expansion; carbon nanotubes can serve as the fast transport channel of electrons, reducing internal impedance and local current density; Ag nanoparticles can induce the uniform nucleation and deposition of K+ . The K metal composite anodes (rGCA-K) based on the conductive skeleton can effectively suppress dendrites and exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in symmetric and full cells. The controllable fabrication process of stable K metal anode is expected to help K metal batteries move toward the stage of commercial production.

Rationally Integrating 2D Confinement and High Sodiophilicity toward SnO2 /Ti3 C2 Tx Composites for High-Performance Sodium-Metal Anodes

The metallic sodium (Na) is characterized by high theoretical specific capacity, low electrode potential and abundant resources, and its advantages manifests itself as a promising candidate anode of sodium metal batteries (SMBs). However, the vaporization during the plating/stripping or uncontrolled growth of sodium dendrites in sodium metal anodes (SMAs) has posed major challenges to its practical applications. To address this issue, here, the SnO₂ /Ti₃ C₂ T_x composite is rationally fabricated, in which sodiophilic SnO₂ nanoparticles are in situ dispersed on the 2D Ti₃ C₂ T_x , providing the acceptor sites of Na⁺  that can control vaporization and dendrites. The SnO₂ /Ti₃ C₂ T_x composite anode exhibits smooth and homogeneous morphology after Na-metal deposition cycles, stable Coulombic efficiency (CE) of half cells, long stable cycles of symmetric cells due to highly sodiophilic sites, and confinement effect. In addition, the full cells assembled with Na_0.6 MnO₂ also show excellent rate performance and cycling performance. These discoveries demonstrate the effectiveness of the acceptor sites and the confinement effect provided by the SnO₂ /Ti₃ C₂ T_x composite, and thus provide an additional degree of freedom for designing SMBs.

Uniform Zinc Deposition Regulated by a Nitrogen-Doped MXene Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interlayer

The dendrite growth and side reactions of zinc metal anode in mildly acidic electrolytes seriously hinder the practical application of aqueous zinc-ion battery. To address these issues, an artificial protective layer of nitrogen-doped MXene (NMX) is used to protect the zinc anode. The NMX protective layer has high conductivity and uniformly distributed zincophilic sites, which can not only homogenize the local electric field on the electrode interface but also accelerate the kinetics for Zn deposition. As a result, the NMX protective layer induces uniform zinc deposition and reduces the overpotential of the electrode. Encouragingly, this NMX-protected Zn anode can cycle stably for 1900 h at 1 mA cm^-2 and 1 mAh cm^-2 . In asymmetric cells, it achieves high cycle reversibility with an average Coulomb efficiency of 99.79% for 4800 cycles at 5 mA cm^-2 .

High capacity adsorption of antimony in biomass-based composite and its consequential utilization as battery anode

Antimony is more than an emerging pollutant in water but a scare resource. In this study, we report an adsorbent with the record capacity so far from the balanced view of Sb(III) and Sb(V). The composite adsorbent was fabricated by encapsulating hollow Fe₃O₄ nanosphere with the EDTA grafted chitosan, and it has superhigh adsorption capacity of for 657.1 mg/g for Sb(III) and 467.3 mg/g for Sb(V), respectively. The mechanism study reveals that the adsorption of Sb initializes from the Fe₃O₄, propagates along the chitosan with hydrogen bond, and terminates at the inner sphere complex with the EDTA moiety in the adsorbent. In view of the ultra-high adsorption capacity of the adsorbent, the recovered adsorbent that contains abundant (>36.4%) highly dispersed antimony nanoparticles (600-FCSE-Sb) is applied to Li-ion battery anode after reduction. This article provides a new idea for connecting water treatment and electric energy storage.

Conductive Iodine-Doped Red Phosphorus Enabled Dendrite-Free Lithium Deposition on MXene Matrix

The highest theoretical capacity and lowest redox potential of lithium metal make lithium-based batteries the "holy grail" of the next-generation batteries. However, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and infinite volume change of lithium seriously hinder the real-world implementation of lithium-based batteries. Herein, a flexible MXene@iodine-doped red phosphorus (MXene@RP) paper with iodine-doped red phosphorous particles evenly distributed on the surface and interlayer of MXene matrix is designed by a simple vapor condensation reduction approach. The MXene@RP paper can be used as an efficient matrix to enable dendrite-free lithium deposition. On the one hand, the iodine doping alleviates the low conductivity shortcoming of red phosphorus, making it facilitate homogeneous lithium nucleation, thus promoting uniform lithium deposition and suppressing dendrite growth. On the other hand, the unique layered structure of conductive MXene paper provides ion transport channels and free spaces for lithium loading, alleviating the volume change induced structural damage. As a result, the MXene@RP paper with preloaded lithium exhibits long-term cycling stability. Particularly, a full cell based on Li-MXene@RP anode can maintain 81.4% of the initial capacity after 600 cycles at 4 C. The MXene@RP-based anode increases the potential applications of MXene and provides a guide for the design of dendrite-free lithium hosts.
