Can Doped-MXene-Based Supercapacitors Be the Game-Changer for Future Energy Landscape? A Critical Perspective

MXene has attracted considerable attention for supercapacitor applications in the past decade owing to its exceptional electrochemical properties. Although major research interests are focused on composite-based MXene, doping engineering of MXene has recently emerged as a promising alternative. This work unveils the potential of doped MXene for supercapacitor applications with a critical perspective. Various doping engineering strategies and synthesis methods adopted are explicitly delineated. Detailed discussions on the optimization of lattice, functionalization, substitution, and interface modification are provided. Further, it sheds light on recent developments with the asssociated mechanism of doped MXene supercapacitors, followed by the associated challenges. Finally, a roadmap for further progress of doped MXene for the realization of advanced and high-performing energy storage systems has been described. We envision that this Perspective will open up new avenues for the further exploration of this domain.

Unraveling the Role of Metal Vacancy Sites and Doped Nitrogen in Enhancing Pseudocapacitance Performance of Defective MXene

Nitrogen-doped titanium carbides (MXene) films exhibit extraordinary volumetric capacitance when high-concentration sulfuric acid electrolyte is utilized owing to the enhancement of pseudocapacitance. However, the energy storage mechanism of nitrogen-doped MXene is unclear due to the complex electrode structure and electrolyte ions' behavior. Here, based on pristine MXene (Ti3C2O2), three different MXene structures are constructed by introducing metal vacancy sites and doped nitrogen atoms, namely, defective MXene (Ti2.9C2O2), nitrogen-doped MXene (Ti3C2O1.9N0.1), and nitrogen-doped MXene with metal vacancy sites (Ti2.9C2O1.9N0.1). Then, the density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations coupled with the effective screening medium reference interaction site method (ESM-RISM) are applied to reveal the electrochemical behavior at the electrode/electrolyte interfacial area. Through analyzing the electronic structure, electrical double-layer capacitance (EDLC), and equilibrium potential of the pseudocapacitance reaction, the specific effect of structural changes on their performance can be clarified: metal vacancy sites can reduce the potential difference of gap layer (Outer Helmholtz plane) at charged state and increase the electronic capacity of Ti, which can be used to explain the high pseudocapacitance, low charge transfer resistance and high-rate capacity properties of nitrogen-doped MXene observed in experiments.

2-Dimensional Ti3C2Tx/NaF nano-composites as electrode materials for hybrid battery-supercapacitor applications

The increasing global demand for energy storage solutions has spurred interest in advanced materials for electrochemical energy storage devices. Transition-metal carbides and nitrides, known as MXenes, are characterized by remarkable conductivity and tunable properties, They have gained significant attention for their potential in energy storage applications. The properties of two-dimensional (2-D) MXenes can be tuned by doping or composite formation. We report a novel Ti3C2Tx/NaF composite prepared via a straightforward hydrothermal process for supercapacitor electrode applications. Three composites with varying NaF concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5%) were synthesized under similar conditions. Structural characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the successful formation of the composites, whereas distinct shifts in XRD peaks and new peaks revealed the presence of NaF. Electrochemical performance was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charging-discharging, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The composites exhibited pseudo-capacitive behavior with reversible redox reactions during charge and discharge cycles. Specific capacitance of 191 F/g at scan rates of 2 mV/s was measured in 1 M KOH. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed an escalating impedance factor as NaF content increases within Ti3C2Tx. This study underscores the versatile energy storage potential of Ti3C2Tx/NaF composites, offering insights into their tailored properties and behavior.

Modification Strategies for Development of 2D Material-Based Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation Reaction

2D materials, such as graphene, MXenes (metal carbides and nitrides), graphdiyne (GDY), layered double hydroxides, and black phosphorus, are widely used as electrocatalyst supports for alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs) owing to their large surface area and unique 2D charge transport channels. Furthermore, the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for AORs via tuning the structure of 2D support materials has recently become a hot area. This article provides a critical review on modification strategies to develop 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AOR. First, the principles and influencing factors of electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols (such as methanol and ethanol) are introduced. Second, surface molecular functionalization, heteroatom doping, and composite hybridization are deeply discussed as the modification strategies to improve 2D material catalyst supports for AORs. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AORs are outlined. This review will promote further efforts in the development of electrocatalysts for AORs.

Interfacial interactions of doped-Ti3C2 MXene/MAPbI3 heterostructures: surfaces and the theoretical approach

The work function (WF) of perovskite materials is essential for developing optoelectronic devices enabling efficient charge transfer at their interfaces. Perovskite's WF can be tuned by MXenes, a new class of two-dimensional (2D) early transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. Their variable surface terminations or the possibility of introducing elemental dopants could advance perovskites. However, the influence of doped-MXenes on perovskite materials is still not fully understood and elaborated. This study provides mechanistic insight into verifying the tunability of MAPbI3 WF by hybridizing with fluorine-terminated Ti3C2Tx (F-MXene) and nitrogen-doped Ti3C2Tx (N-MXene). We first reveal the interfacial interaction between MAPbI3 and MXenes via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). UPS supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations allowed the description of the influence of F and N on MXene's WF. Furthermore, we developed MAPbI3/MXene heterostructures using F- and N-MXenes. The F-MXenes extended the most WF of MAPbI3 from 4.50 eV up to 3.00 eV, compared to only a small shift for N-MXene. The underlying mechanism was charge transfer from low WF F-MXene to MAPbI3, as demonstrated by PL quenching in MAPbI3/F-MXene heterostructures. Altogether, this work showcases the potential of fluorine-doped MXenes over nitrogen-doped MXenes in advancing perovskite heterostructures, thus opening a door for efficient optoelectronic devices.

Computational-Guided Design of Photoelectrode Active Materials for Light-Assisted Energy Storage

The design of a novel photoelectric integrated system is considered to be an efficient way to utilize and store inexhaustible solar energy. However, the mechanism of photoelectrode under illuminate conditions is still unclear. Density functional theory (DFT) provides standardized analysis and becomes a powerful way to explain the photoelectrochemical mechanism. Herein, the feasibility of four metal oxide configurations as photoelectrode materials by using a high throughput calculation method based on DFT are investigated. According to the photoelectrochemical properties, band structure and density of states are calculated, and the intercalate/deintercalate simulation is performed with adsorption configuration. The calculation indicates that the band gap of Fe2 CoO4 (2.404 eV) is narrower than that of Co3 O4 (2.553 eV), as well as stronger adsorption energy (-3.293 eV). The relationship between the electronic structure and the photoelectrochemical performance is analyzed and verified according to the predicted DFT results by subsequent experiments. Results show that the Fe2 CoO4 photoelectrode samples exhibit higher coulombic efficiency (97.4%) than that under dark conditions (94.9%), which is consistent with the DFT results. This work provides a general method for the design of integrated photoelectrode materials and is expected to be enlightening for the adjustment of light-assisted properties of multifunctional materials.

Room Temperature Chemiresistive Gas Sensors Based on 2D MXenes

Owing to their large surface area, two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting nanomaterials have been extensively studied for gas-sensing applications in recent years. In particular, the possibility of operating at room temperature (RT) is desirable for 2D gas sensors because it significantly reduces the power consumption of the sensing device. Furthermore, RT gas sensors are among the first choices for the development of flexible and wearable devices. In this review, we focus on the 2D MXenes used for the realization of RT gas sensors. Hence, pristine, doped, decorated, and composites of MXenes with other semiconductors for gas sensing are discussed. Two-dimensional MXene nanomaterials are discussed, with greater emphasis on the sensing mechanism. MXenes with the ability to work at RT have great potential for practical applications such as flexible and/or wearable gas sensors.

Photoelectrochemical Engineering for Light-Assisted Rechargeable Metal Batteries: Mechanism, Development, and Future

Rechargeable battery devices with high energy density are highly demanded by  our  modern society. The use of metal anodes is extremely attractive for future rechargeable battery devices. However, the notorious metal dendritic and instability of solid electrolyte interface issues pose a series of challenges for metal anodes. Recently, considering the indigestible dynamical behavior of metal anodes, photoelectrochemical engineering of light-assisted metal anodes have been rapidly developed since they efficiently utilize the integration and synergy of oriented crystal engineering and photocatalysis engineering, which provided a potential way to unlock the interface electrochemical mechanism and deposition reaction kinetics of metal anodes. This review starts with the fundamentals of photoelectrochemical engineering and follows with the state-of-art advance of photoelectrochemical engineering for light-assisted rechargeable metal batteries where photoelectrode materials, working principles, types, and practical applications are explained. The last section summarizes the major challenges and some invigorating perspectives for future research on light-assisted rechargeable metal batteries.

Advance of Prussian Blue-Derived Nanohybrids in Energy Storage: Current Status and Perspective

Great changes have occurred in the energy storage area in recent years as a result of rapid economic expansion. People have conducted substantial research on sustainable energy conversion and storage systems in order to mitigate the looming energy crisis. As a result, developing energy storage materials is critical. Materials with an open frame structure are known as Prussian blue analogs (PBAs). Anode materials for oxides, sulfides, selenides, phosphides, borides, and carbides have been extensively explored as anode materials in the field of energy conversion and storage in recent years. The advantages and disadvantages of oxides, sulfides, selenides, phosphides, borides, carbides, and other elements, as well as experimental methodologies and electrochemical properties, are discussed in this work. The findings reveal that employing oxides, sulfides, selenides, phosphides, borides, and other electrode materials to overcome the problems of low conductivity, excessive material loss, and low specific volume is ineffective. Therefore, this review intends to address the issues of diverse energy storage materials by combining multiple technologies to manufacture battery materials with low cost, large capacity, and extended service life.

Novel Strain Engineering Combined with a Microscopic Pore Synergistic Modulated Strategy for Designing Lattice Tensile-Strained Porous V2C-MXene for High-Performance Overall Water Splitting

Transition metal carbon/nitride (MXene) holds immense potential as an innovative electrocatalyst for enhancing the overall water splitting properties. Nevertheless, the re-stacking nature induced by van der Waals force remains a significant challenge. In this work, the lattice tensile-strained porous V₂C-MXene (named as TS₍₂₄₎-P₍₅₀₎-V₂C) is successfully constructed via the rapid spray freezing method and the following hydrothermal treatment. Besides, the influence of lattice strain degree and microscopic pores on the catalytic ability is reviewed and explored systematically. The lattice tensile strain within V₂C-MXene could widen the interlayer spacing and accelerate the ion transfer. The microscopic pores could change the ion transmission path and shorten the migration distance. As a consequence, the obtained TS₍₂₄₎-P₍₅₀₎-V₂C shows extraordinary hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction activity with the overpotential of 154 and 269 mV, respectively, at the current density of 10 mA/cm², which is quite remarkable compared to the MXene-based electrocatalysts. Moreover, the overall water splitting device assembled using TS₍₂₄₎-P₍₅₀₎-V₂C as both anode and cathode demonstrates a low cell voltage requirement of 1.57 V to obtain 10 mA/cm². Overall, the implementation of this work could offer an exciting avenue to overcome the re-stacking issue of V₂C-MXene, affording a high-efficiency electrocatalyst with superior catalytic activity and desirable reaction kinetics.

Enhanced Gas Sensing Performance of ZnO/Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanocomposite

A representative of titanium carbide MXene, Ti₃C₂T_x is a promising candidate for high performance gas sensing and has attracted significant attention. However, MXene naturally has a multilayer structure with low porosity, which prevents its gas-sensing activity. Zinc oxide (ZnO) has long been utilized as a gas detector. Despite its good response to multiple gases, high operation temperature has limited its widespread use as a gas-sensing material. In this study, a room-temperature toxic gas sensor was prepared from ZnO/Ti₃C₂T_x MXene nanocomposite consisting of 2D few-layered MXene and 1D ZnO nanoparticles. A simple technique for synthesizing the nanocomposite was established. The physicochemical properties of the nanocomposite were fine-controlled with more active sites and higher porosity. The sensitivity and gas-selectivity of the sensing material were closely examined. The nanocomposite showed enhanced response and recovery behaviors to toxic gases, which outperformed pure Ti₃C₂T_x MXene and pure ZnO. This study offers a practical strategy by which to increase the gas-sensing performance of Ti₃C₂T_x MXene, and expands comprehensive understanding of the gas-sensing process of ZnO/Ti₃C₂T_x p-n heterostructure.

MXenes Thin Films: From Fabrication to Their Applications

Two-dimensional MXenes possessed exceptional physiochemical properties such as high electrical conductivity (20,000 Scm⁻¹), flexibility, mechanical strength (570 MPa), and hydrophilic surface functionalities that have been widely explored for energy storage, sensing, and catalysis applications. Recently, the fabrication of MXenes thin films has attracted significant attention toward electronic devices and sensor applications. This review summarizes the exciting features of MXene thin film fabrication methods such as vacuum-assisted filtration (VAF), electrodeposition techniques, spin coating, spray coating, dip-coating methods, and other physical/chemical vapor deposition methods. Furthermore, a comparison between different methods available for synthesizing a variety of MXenes films was discussed in detail. This review further summarizes fundamental aspects and advances of MXenes thin films in solar cells, batteries, electromagnetic interference shielding, sensing, etc., to date. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in terms of future research, development, and applications of MXenes-based films are discussed. A comprehensive understanding of these competitive features and challenges shall provide guidelines and inspiration for further growth in MXenes-based functional thin films and contribute to the advances in MXenes technology.

Integrated Photovoltaic Charging and Energy Storage Systems: Mechanism, Optimization, and Future

As an emerging solar energy utilization technology, solar redox batteries (SPRBs) combine the superior advantages of photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices and redox batteries and are considered as alternative candidates for large-scale solar energy capture, conversion, and storage. In this review, a systematic summary from three aspects, including: dye sensitizers, PEC properties, and photoelectronic integrated systems, based on the characteristics of rechargeable batteries and the advantages of photovoltaic technology, is presented. The matching problem of high-performance dye sensitizers, strategies to improve the performance of photoelectrode PEC, and the working mechanism and structure design of multienergy photoelectronic integrated devices are mainly introduced and analyzed. In particular, the devices and improvement strategies of high-performance electrode materials are analyzed from the perspective of different photoelectronic integrated devices (liquid-based and solid-state-based). Finally, future perspectives are provided for further improving the performance of SPRBs. This work will open up new prospects for the development of high-efficiency photoelectronic integrated batteries.
