Synergistic Effects in Ultrafine Molybdenum-Tungsten Bimetallic Carbide Hollow Carbon Architecture Boost Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis and Lithium-Ion Storage

Construction of Ni2P-MoC/Coal-Based Carbon Fiber Self-Supporting Catalysts for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution

Efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts play an important role in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of electrolytic water splitting. Herein, Ni2P-MoC/coal-based carbon fiber (Ni2P-MoC/C-CF) self-supporting catalysts were obtained by low-temperature phosphorization and high-temperature carbonization. The Mo source and oxidized coal were uniformly dispersed in the carbon support by electrospinning technology. A precursor of Ni was introduced by the impregnation method. The synergistic effect of MoC and Ni2P may reduce the strong hydrogen adsorption capacity of pure MoC and provide a fast hydrogen release process. In addition, the C-CFs prepared by electrospinning can not only prevent the agglomeration of MoC and Ni2P particles at a high temperature but also provide a self-supporting support for the catalyst. As a result, the catalytic performance of the HER was improved greatly, and a low overpotential of 112 mV at 10 mA cm-2 was exhibited stably by the Ni2P-MoC/C-CFs. This work not only converts coal into coal-based carbon materials but also provides a feasible pathway for the rational design of large-scale molded hydrogen electrocatalysts.

Anchoring tungsten oxide nanorods on TiO2 nanowires coupled with carbon for efficient lithium-ion storage

Reasonable construction of hierarchical electrode materials is verified as a promising way to improve the electrochemical performance due to the synergistic effect between unique components and constructions. Hence, a hierarchical nanostructure composed of tungsten oxide nanorods anchored on TiO2 nanowires coupled with a carbon layer (TiO2@WOx-C NWs) was synthesized as an electrode material by exploiting the self-assembly function of dopamine and carbonization. The inner one-dimensional TiO2 nanowires served as the stable substrate with WOx anchored on the surface of TiO2 NWs and the tightly coupled carbon nanosheets, which can not only facilitate electron transport but also provide more active sites for electrochemical reactions. As a result, benefitting from the synergistic effects between three functional components and the multi-dimensional hierarchical structures, the as-prepared TiO2@WOx-C NWs displayed excellent lithium storage performance with a specific capacity of 651.4 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 A g-1, which is superior to most Ti-based structures. The enhanced electrochemical performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the different dimensional structures, the high capacity of tungsten oxide and the surface coating of the conductive carbon material. This work provides a simple and effective approach to designing functional hierarchical structures for energy storage and conversion.

Anion Defects Engineering of Ternary Nb-Based Chalcogenide Anodes Toward High-Performance Sodium-Based Dual-Ion Batteries

Highlights

We developed an efficient and extensible strategy to produce the single-phase ternary NbSSe nanohybrids with defect-enrich microstructure. The anionic-Se doping play a key role in effectively modulating the electronic structure and surface chemistry of NbS2 phase, including the increased interlayers distance (0.65 nm), the enhanced intrinsic electrical conductivity (3.23 × 103 S m-1) and extra electroactive defect sites. The NbSSe/NC composite as anode exhibits rapid Na+ diffusion kinetics and increased capacitance behavior for Na+ storage, resulting in high reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract

Sodium-based dual-ion batteries (SDIBs) have gained tremendous attention due to their virtues of high operating voltage and low cost, yet it remains a tough challenge for the development of ideal anode material of SDIBs featuring with high kinetics and long durability. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of N-doped carbon film-modified niobium sulfur–selenium (NbSSe/NC) nanosheets architecture, which holds favorable merits for Na+ storage of enlarged interlayer space, improved electrical conductivity, as well as enhanced reaction reversibility, endowing it with high capacity, high-rate capability and high cycling stability. The combined electrochemical studies with density functional theory calculation reveal that the enriched defects in such nanosheets architecture can benefit for facilitating charge transfer and Na+ adsorption to speed the electrochemical kinetics. The NbSSe/NC composites are studied as the anode of a full SDIBs by pairing the expanded graphite as cathode, which shows an impressively cyclic durability with negligible capacity attenuation over 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g−1, as well as an outstanding energy density of 230.6 Wh kg−1 based on the total mass of anode and cathode.

Efficient Lithium/Sodium-Ion Storage by Core-Shell Carbon Nanospheres@TiO2 Decorate by Epitaxial WSe2 Nanosheets Derived from Bimetallic Polydopamine Composites

Metal-polydopamine coordination chemistry attracts great attention owing to the synergistic effect of adjustable components and advantageous structures. However, few efforts have been devoted to exploring bimetal-polydopamine composites, especially for multistructural composites with high-capacity components and high stability. In this regard, the TiO₂ @C-WSe₂ core-shell nanospheres are designed and fabricated based on Ti-W-polydopamine composites after selenization, in which the TiO₂ nanoparticles are encapsulated or embedded in the carbon nanospheres and the external WSe₂ nanosheets are grown epitaxially on the carbon surfaces, featuring multiple channels for ion diffusion and abundant active edges for electrochemical reactions. The introduction of WSe₂ not only greatly improves the capacity but also results in exponential growth of the active edge. As a result, the as-prepared TiO₂ @C-WSe₂ displayed long-term cycling performance in lithium-ion batteries. Furthermore, the anode is assembled into sodium-ion batteries, manifesting a stable capacity of 352 mA h g^-1 at 1.0 A g^-1 even after 2000 cycles, one of the best performances for polydopamine-based composites. Enhanced performance can be attributed to the synergies of high-capacity components and different dimensional materials. This work highlights that the rational design of functional structures provides a novel inspiration for electrodes with effective nanoarchitectures.
