Long-Cycling All-Solid-State Batteries Achieved by 2D Interface between Prelithiated Aluminum Foil Anode and Sulfide Electrolyte

Electrochemical behavior of elemental alloy anodes in solid-state batteries

Lithium alloy anodes in the form of dense foils offer significant potential advantages over lithium metal and particulate alloy anodes for solid-state batteries (SSBs). However, the reaction and degradation mechanisms of dense alloy anodes remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the electrochemical lithiation/delithiation behavior of 12 elemental alloy anodes in SSBs with Li6PS5Cl solid-state electrolyte (SSE), enabling direct behavioral comparisons. The materials show highly divergent first-cycle Coulombic efficiency, ranging from 99.3% for indium to ∼20% for antimony. Through microstructural imaging and electrochemical testing, we identify lithium trapping within the foil during delithiation as the principal reason for low Coulombic efficiency in most materials. The exceptional Coulombic efficiency of indium is found to be due to unique delithiation reaction front morphology evolution in which the high-diffusivity LiIn phase remains at the SSE interface. This study links composition to reaction behavior for alloy anodes and thus provides guidance toward better SSBs.

The interface engineering and structure design of an alloying-type metal foil anode for lithium ion batteries: a review

An alloying-type metal foil serves as an integrated anode that is distinct from the prevalent powder-casting production of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and emerging lithium metal batteries (LMBs), and also its energy density and processing technology can be profoundly developed. However, besides their apparent intriguing advantages of a high specific capacity, electrical conductivity, and the ease of formation, metal foil anodes suffer from slow lithiation kinetics, a trade-off between specific capacity and cycle life, and a low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) owing to their multi-scaled structural geometry, huge volume change, and induced interfacial issues during the alloying process. In this review, we attempt to present a comprehensive overview on the recent research progress with respect to alloying-type metal foil anodes toward high-energy-density and low-cost LIBs. The failure mechanism of metal foil anodes during lithiation/delithiation and existing challenges are also summarized. Subsequently, the structural design and interface engineering strategies that have witnessed significant achievements are highlighted, which can promote the practical development of LIBs, including artificial SEI, alloying, structural design, and grain refinement. Furthermore, scientific perspectives are proposed to further improve the overall performance and decouple the complex mechanisms in terms of interdisciplinary fields of electrochemistry, metallic materials science, mechanics, and interfacial science, demonstrating that metal foil anode-based LIBs require more research efforts.

Toward Ultrastable Metal Anode/Li6PS5Cl Interface via an Interlayer as Li Reservoir

All-solid-state sulfide-based Li metal batteries are promising candidates for energy storage systems. However, thorny issues associated with undesired reactions and contact failure at the anode interface hinder their commercialization. Herein, an indium foil was endowed with a formed interlayer whose surface film is enriched with LiF and LiIn phases via a feasible prelithiation route. The lithiated alloy of the interlayer can regulate Li+ flux and charge distribution as a Li reservoir, benefiting uniform Li deposition. Meanwhile, it can suppress the reductive decomposition of the Li6PS5Cl electrolyte and maintain sufficient solid-solid contact. In situ impedance spectra reveal that constant interface impedance and fast charge transfer are realized by the interlayer. Further, long-term Li stripping/plating over 2000 h at 2.55 mA cm-2 is demonstrated by this anode. All-solid-state cells employing a LiCoO2 cathode and the Pre In anode can work for over 700 cycles with a capacity retention of 96.15% at 0.5 C.

Toward robust solid-state lithium metal batteries by stabilizing a polyethylene oxide-based solid electrolyte interface with a biomass polymer filler

Achieving all-solid-state lithium-based batteries with high energy densities requires lightweight and ultrathin solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) with high Li+ conductivity, but this still poses significant challenges. Herein, we designed a robust and mechanically flexible SSE (denoted BC-PEO/LiTFSI) by using an environmentally friendly and low-cost approach that involves bacterial cellulose (BC) as a three-dimensional (3D) rigid backbone. In this design, BC-PEO/LiTFSI is tightly integrated and polymerized through intermolecular hydrogen bonding, and the rich oxygen-containing functional groups from the BC filler also provide the active site for Li+ hopping transport. Therefore, the all-solid-state Li-Li symmetric cell with BC-PEO/LiTFSI (containing 3% BC) showed excellent electrochemical cycling properties over 1000 h at a current density of 0.5 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the Li-LiFePO4 full cell showed steady cycling performance under 3 mg cm-2 areal loading at a current of 0.1 C, and the resultant Li-S full cell maintained over 610 mAh g-1 for upward of 300 cycles at 0.2 C and 60 °C.

"Win-Win" Modification of LiCoO2 Enables Stable and Long-Life Cycling of Sulfide-Based All Solid-State Batteries

Interfacial side reactions and space charge layers between the oxide cathode material and the sulfide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), along with the structural degradation of the active material, significantly compromise the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state batteries (ASSLBs). Surface coating and bulk doping of the cathodes are considered the most effective approaches to mitigate the interface issues between the cathode and SSEs and enhance the structural integrity of composite cathodes. Here, a one-step low-cost means is ingeniously designed to modify LiCoO2 (LCO) with heterogeneous Li2 TiO3 /Li(TiMg)1/2 O2 surface coating and bulk gradient Mg doping. When applied in Li10 GeP2 S12 -based ASSLBs, the Li2 TiO3 and Li(TiMg)1/2 O2 coating layers effectively suppress interfacial side reactions and weaken space charge layer effect. Furthermore, gradient Mg doping stabilizes the bulk structure to mitigate the formation of spinel-like phases during local overcharging caused by solid-solid contact. The modified LCO cathodes exhibit excellent cycle performance with a capacity retention of 80 % after 870 cycles. This dual-functional strategy provides the possibility for large-scale commercial implementation of cathodes modification in sulfide based ASSLBs in the future.

Aluminum foil negative electrodes with multiphase microstructure for all-solid-state Li-ion batteries

Metal negative electrodes that alloy with lithium have high theoretical charge storage capacity and are ideal candidates for developing high-energy rechargeable batteries. However, such electrode materials show limited reversibility in Li-ion batteries with standard non-aqueous liquid electrolyte solutions. To circumvent this issue, here we report the use of non-pre-lithiated aluminum-foil-based negative electrodes with engineered microstructures in an all-solid-state Li-ion cell configuration. When a 30-μm-thick Al_94.5In_5.5 negative electrode is combined with a Li₆PS₅Cl solid-state electrolyte and a LiNi_0.6Mn_0.2Co_0.2O₂-based positive electrode, lab-scale cells deliver hundreds of stable cycles with practically relevant areal capacities at high current densities (6.5 mA cm^-2). We also demonstrate that the multiphase Al-In microstructure enables improved rate behavior and enhanced reversibility due to the distributed LiIn network within the aluminum matrix. These results demonstrate the possibility of improved all-solid-state batteries via metallurgical design of negative electrodes while simplifying manufacturing processes.

Solid-State Electrolytes in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: Latest Progresses and Prospects

Solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (SSLSBs) have attracted tremendous research interest due to their large theoretical energy density and high safety, which are highly important indicators for the development of next-generation energy storage devices. Particularly, safety and "shuttle effect" issues originating from volatile and flammable liquid organic electrolytes can be fully mitigated by switching to a solid-state configuration. However, their road to thecommercial application is still plagued with numerous challenges, most notably the intrinsic electrochemical instability of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) materials and their interfacial compatibility with electrodes and electrolytes. In this review, a critical discussion on the key issues and problems of different types of SSEs as well as the corresponding optimization strategies are first highlighted. Then, the state-of-the-art preparation methods and properties of different kinds of SSE materials, and their manufacture, characterization and performance in SSLSBs are summarized in detail. Finally, a scientific outlook for the future development of SSEs and the avenue to commercial application of SSLSBs is also proposed.
