Achieving Ultrahigh Efficiency Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskite Microcrystals via Ionic Liquids

Sb3+/Sm3+ Codoped Cs2NaScCl6 All-Inorganic Double Perovskite: Blue Emission of Self-Trapped Excitons and Red-Emission via Energy Transfer

The lead-free halide perovskites possess nontoxicity and excellent chemical stability, whereas relatively weak luminescence intensity limits their potential in practical applications. Therefore, strengthening the luminescence intensity and expanding application fields are urgent tasks for the development of lead-free halide perovskites. In this paper, antimony-doped Cs2NaScCl6 crystals synthesized by a solvothermal method emit bright, deep blue photoluminescence at 447 nm. The photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE), and absorption spectra demonstrate that Sb3+ doping effectively activate the intrinsic "dark self-trapped exciton (STE)," leading to an impressive photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) value of 78.31% for 1% Sb3+ doping. Furthermore, the luminescence intensity remains above 92% compared with the fresh sample without secondary phases detected even after 90 days under environmental conditions. To expand the emission spectra, rare-earth Sm3+ is further incorporated into Cs2NaScCl6:1% Sb3+ crystals. The results show that Sb ions not only enhance intrinsic STE luminescence but also serve as sensitizers to boost the red-light emission of Sm3+, leading to a significant 500-fold increase in red emission intensity. Finally, the PLQY reaches a stunning 86.78%. These findings provide valuable insights in the design of Sb ion-doped lead-free double perovskites, broadening the application fields in various optoelectronic devices.

RGB tri-luminescence in organic-inorganic zirconium halide perovskites

Materials with two or more fluorescence features under different excitation sources have great potential in optical applications, but luminous materials with three emission characteristics have been largely undeveloped. Here, we report a novel zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid ((C2H5)4N)2ZrCl6 perovskite with multiple emissions. The zirconium-based perovskite exhibits a red emission around 620 nm, a green emission at 527 nm, and a blue emission around 500 nm. The red and green emissions come from self-trapped excitons (STEs) and the d-d transitions of Zr(iv), respectively, which are caused by distortion of the [ZrCl6]2- octahedra. The blue emission is caused by thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), which is similar to that of Cs2ZrCl6. The absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the red and blue double emission is up to 83% and the PLQY of the green emission is 27%. With different combinations of ((C2H5)4N)2ZrCl6 samples, we achieve a variety of applications, including a two-color luminescent anti-counterfeiting device, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) with a color rendering index (CRI) of 95 and information encryption with different excitations. We also synthesize other hybrid zirconium perovskites with tri-luminescence through a similar method. Our work provides a potential set of excitation-dependent luminescent materials and is expected to expand the basic research and practical applications of multi-luminescence materials.

Excitation Wavelength-Dependent Fluorescence of a Lanthanide Organic Metal Halide Cluster for Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

The achievement of significant photoluminescence (PL) in lanthanide ions (Ln3+ ) has primarily relied on host sensitization, where energy is transferred from the excited host material to the Ln3+ ions. However, this luminous mechanism involves only one optical antenna, namely the host material, which limits the accessibility of excitation wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) PL. Consequently, the wider application of Ln3+ ions in light-emitting devices is hindered. In this study, we present an organic-inorganic compound, (DMA)4 LnCl7 (DMA+ =[CH3 NH2 CH3 ]+ , Ln3+ =Ce3+ , Tb3+ ), which serves as an independent host lattice material for efficient Ex-De emission by doping it with trivalent antimony (Sb3+ ). The pristine (DMA)4 LnCl7 compounds exhibit high luminescence, maintaining the characteristic sharp emission bands of Ln3+ and demonstrating a high PL quantum yield of 90-100 %. Upon Sb3+ doping, the compound exhibits noticeable Ex-De emission with switchable colors. Through a detailed spectral study, we observe that the prominent energy transfer process observed in traditional host-sensitized systems is absent in these materials. Instead, they exhibit two independent emission centers from Ln3+ and Sb3+ , each displaying distinct features in luminous color and radiative lifetime. These findings open up new possibilities for designing Ex-De emitters based on Ln3+ ions.

Tunable Afterglow and Self-Trapped Exciton Emissions in Zr (IV)-Based Organic-Inorganic Metal Halide Hybrids by Metal-Ion Doping

Low-dimensional hybrid metal halide (LDHMH) materials have attracted considerable attention owing to their intriguing optical properties. To the best of the knowledge, this is the first study to successfully demonstrate both self-trap exciton (STE) and afterglow emissions in Zr-based LDHMH materials. The obtained pure (Ph3 S)2 ZrCl6 crystals showed near-ultraviolet phosphorescence and a green afterglow owing to the organic cation Ph3 S+ , while the Bi-doped and Sb-doped crystals exhibited both STE and afterglow emissions. However, the Te-doped crystals showed only a broad yellow STE emission owing to the [TeCl6 ]2- octahedron. In addition, all the crystals showed good stability. Notably, Sb-doped crystals produced white light, which can be adjusted between cold white and warm white using different excitations. Finally, this strategy for both STE and afterglow emissions can be applied to other LDHMH materials for optical applications.

Recent Advances in the Synthesis and Application of Vacancy-Ordered Halide Double Perovskite Materials for Solar Cells: A Promising Alternative to Lead-Based Perovskites

Lead-based halide perovskite materials are being developed as efficient light-absorbing materials for use in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). PSCs have shown remarkable progress in power conversion efficiency, increasing from 3.80% to more than 25% within a decade, showcasing their potential as a promising renewable energy technology. Although PSCs have many benefits, including a high light absorption coefficient, the ability to tune band gap, and a long charge diffusion length, the poor stability and the toxicity of lead represent a significant disadvantage for commercialization. To address this issue, research has focused on developing stable and nontoxic halide perovskites for use in solar cells. A potential substitute is halide double perovskites (HDPs), particularly vacancy-ordered HDPs, as they offer greater promise because they can be processed using a solution-based method. This review provides a structural analysis of HDPs, the various synthesis methods for vacancy-ordered HDPs, and their impact on material properties. Recent advances in vacancy-ordered HDPs are also discussed, including their role in active and transport layers of solar cells. Furthermore, valuable insights for developing high-performance vacancy-ordered HDP solar cells are reported from the detailed information presented in recent simulation studies. Finally, the potential of vacancy-ordered HDPs as a substitute for lead-based perovskites is outlined. Overall, the ability to tune optical and electronic properties and the high stability and nontoxicity of HDPs have positioned them as a promising candidate for use in photovoltaic applications.
