Hybrid MOF Template-Directed Construction of Hollow-Structured In2 O3 @ZrO2 Heterostructure for Enhancing Hydrogenation of CO2 to Methanol

The Structures and Compositions Design of the Hollow Micro-Nano-Structured Metal Oxides for Environmental Catalysis

In recent decades, with the rapid development of the inorganic synthesis and the increasing discharge of pollutants in the process of industrialization, hollow-structured metal oxides (HSMOs) have taken on a striking role in the field of environmental catalysis. This is all due to their unique structural characteristics compared to solid nanoparticles, such as high loading capacity, superior pore permeability, high specific surface area, abundant inner void space, and low density. Although the HSMOs with different morphologies have been reviewed and prospected in the aspect of synthesis strategies and potential applications, there has been no systematic review focusing on the structures and compositions design of HSMOs in the field of environmental catalysis so far. Therefore, this review will mainly focus on the component dependence and controllable structure of HSMOs in the catalytic elimination of different environmental pollutants, including the automobile and stationary source emissions, volatile organic compounds, greenhouse gases, ozone-depleting substances, and other potential pollutants. Moreover, we comprehensively reviewed the applications of the catalysts with hollow structure that are mainly composed of metal oxides such as CeO2, MnOx, CuOx, Co3O4, ZrO2, ZnO, Al3O4, In2O3, NiO, and Fe3O4 in automobile and stationary source emission control, volatile organic compounds emission control, and the conversion of greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances. The structure-activity relationship is also briefly discussed. Finally, further challenges and development trends of HSMO catalysts in environmental catalysis are also prospected.

Application of metal-organic frameworks and their derivates for thermal-catalytic C1 molecules conversion

One-carbon (C1) catalysis refers to the conversion of compounds with a single carbon atom, especially carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4), into clean fuels and valuable chemicals via catalytic strategy is crucial for sustainable and green development. Among various catalytic strategies, thermal-driven process seems to be one of the most promising pathways for C1 catalysis due to the high efficiency and practical application prospect. Notably, the rational design of thermal-driven C1 catalysts plays a vital role in boosting the targeted products synthesis of C1 catalysis, which relies heavily on the choice of ideal active site support, catalyst fabrication precursor, and catalytic reaction field. As a novel crystalline porous material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has made significant progress in the design and synthesis of various functional nanomaterials. However, the application of MOFs in C1 catalysis faces numerous challenges, such as thermal stability, mechanical strength, yield of MOFs, and so on. To overcome these limitations and harness the advantages of MOFs in thermal-driven C1 catalysis, researchers have developed various catalyst/carrier preparation strategies. In this review, we provide a concise overview of the recent advancements in the conversion of CO, CO2, and CH4 into clean fuels and valuable chemicals via thermal-catalytic strategy using MOFs-based catalysts. Furthermore, we discuss the main challenges and opportunities associated with MOFs-based catalysts for thermal-driven C1 catalysis in the future.

Core-Shell Structured Nanozyme with PDA-Mediated Enhanced Antioxidant Efficiency to Treat Early Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Early intervention during intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) plays a vital role in inhibiting its deterioration and activating the regenerative process. Aiming at the high oxidative stress (OS) in the IDD microenvironment, a core-shell structured nanozyme composed of Co-doped NiO nanoparticle (CNO) as the core encapsulated with a polydopamine (PDA) shell, named PDA@CNO, was constructed, hoping to regulate the pathological environment. The results indicated that the coexistence of abundant Ni3+/Ni2+and Co3+/Co2+redox couples in CNO provided rich catalytic sites; meanwhile, the quinone and catechol groups in the PDA shell could enable the proton-coupled electron transfer, thus endowing the PDA@CNO nanozyme with multiple antioxidative enzyme-like activities to scavenge •O2-, H2O2, and •OH efficiently. Under OS conditions in vitro, PDA@CNO could effectively reduce the intracellular ROS in nucleus pulposus (NP) into friendly H2O and O2, to protect NP cells from stagnant proliferation, abnormal metabolism (senescence, mitochondria dysfunction, and impaired redox homeostasis), and inflammation, thereby reconstructing the extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis. The in vivo local injection experiments further proved the desirable therapeutic effects of the PDA@CNO nanozyme in a rat IDD model, suggesting great potential in prohibiting IDD from deterioration.

Tandem catalysts of different crystalline In2O3/sheet HZSM-5 zeolite for CO2 hydrogenation to aromatics

In tandem catalysts, not only good synergy between the two active components is required, but also the precise control of the spatial distribution between the two active components of metal oxides and zeolite is crucial for the migration and conversion of reaction intermediates in the direct conversion of CO2 to hydrocarbons. The correlation between the metal and the acidic site of zeolite has traditionally been simplified as "the closer, the better". However, it should be noted that this principle only holds true for a portion of tandem catalysts. Therefore, this paper studied the effect of different crystalline In2O3 (cubic phase, hexagonal phase, and mixed cubic/hexagonal phase) and sheet HZSM-5 zeolite tandem catalysts on the activity of CO2 hydrogenation reaction under different spatial distribution. The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of density functional theory (DFT) were used to simulate the adsorption energy of CO2 by oxygen vacancy on c-In2O3(111) and h-In2O3(104) planes, it was found that Ov1 on c-In2O3(111) and Ov4 on h-In2O3(104) had the strongest adsorption energy for CO2. In addition, it has been observed that the proximity of the two active components (e.g., during mortar mixing) results in decreased catalytic performance. This is due to the migration of metal In, which neutralizes the acid sites of zeolites and leads to inefficient conversion of methanol reaction intermediates to aromatics. As a result, CO2 conversion and aromatic selectivity are decreased.

Embedding CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots into an In2O3 Nanotube for Selective Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to Hydrocarbon Fuels

Halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are one of the most prospective candidates for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, but their photocatalytic performances are far from satisfactory due to structural instability and severe charge recombination. In this study, we demonstrated a CsPbBr3 QDs/In2O3 hierarchical nanotube (CPB/IO) for efficient CO2 conversion, in which CsPbBr3 QDs were well-dispersed on the In-MOF-derived In2O3 nanotube by a facile self-assembly process. The optimized CPB/IO catalyst displayed an enhanced photocatalytic CO2 performance with a (CO + CH4) generation rate of 16.37 μmol·g-1·h-1 upon simulated solar illumination without a photosensitizer and sacrificial agent, which is 3.59 times stronger than that of pristine CsPbBr3 QDs (4.56 μmol·g-1·h-1). Besides, the modified CsPbBr3 QD catalyst exhibited an obvious increase of CH4 selectivity and excellent stability after four cycles. The unique zero-dimensional (0D)/one-dimensional (1D) heterostructure and matching band potentials between CsPbBr3 and In2O3 supply an intimate interfacial contact, numerous active sites, and effective charge transfer for CO2 photoreduction. This work can inspire the formation of novel halide-perovskite-involving photocatalysts for solar fuel formation.

Confining Co-Based Nanocatalysts by Ultrathin Nanotubes for Efficient Transfer Hydrogenation of Biomass Derivatives

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) based on non-noble-metal catalysts has emerged as an environmentally friendly way for the utilization of biomass resources. However, the development of efficient and stable non-noble-metal catalysts is crucially challenging due to their inherent inactivity. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-transformed CoAl nanotube catalyst (CoAl NT160-H) with unique confinement effect was developed via a "MOF transformation and reduction" strategy, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the CTH reaction of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) with isopropanol (2-PrOH) as the H donor. Comprehensive characterizations and experimental investigations uncovered that the confined effect of the ultrathin amorphous Al2O3 nanotubes could modulate the electronic structure and enhance the Lewis acidity of Co nanoparticles (NPs), thus contributing to the adsorption and activation of LA and 2-PrOH. The synergy between the electropositive Co NPs and Lewis acid-base sites of the CoAl NT160-H catalyst facilitated the transfer of α-H in 2-PrOH to the C atom of carbonyl in LA during the CTH process via a Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley mechanism. Moreover, the confined Co NPs embedded on am-Al2O3 nanotubes endowed the CoAl NT160-H catalyst with superior stability and the catalytic activity was nearly unchanged for at least ten cycles, far surpassing that of the Co/am-Al2O3 catalyst prepared by the traditional impregnation method.
