Multifunctional MoSe2 @MXene Heterostructure-Decorated Cellulose Fabric for Wearable Thermal Therapy

Wearable EMI Shielding Composite Films with Integrated Optimization of Electrical Safety, Biosafety and Thermal Safety

Biomaterial-based flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composite films are desirable in many applications of wearable electronic devices. However, much research focuses on improving the EMI shielding performance of materials, while optimizing the comprehensive safety of wearable EMI shielding materials has been neglected. Herein, wearable cellulose nanofiber@boron nitride nanosheet/silver nanowire/bacterial cellulose (CNF@BNNS/AgNW/BC) EMI shielding composite films with sandwich structure are fabricated via a simple sequential vacuum filtration method. For the first time, the electrical safety, biosafety, and thermal safety of EMI shielding materials are optimized integratedly. Since both sides of the sandwich structure contain CNF and BC electrical insulation layers, the CNF@BNNS/AgNW/BC composite films exhibit excellent electrical safety. Furthermore, benefiting from the AgNW conductive networks in the middle layer, the CNF@BNNS/AgNW/BC exhibit excellent EMI shielding effectiveness of 49.95 dB and ultra-fast response Joule heating performance. More importantly, the antibacterial property of AgNW ensures the biosafety of the composite films. Meanwhile, the AgNW and the CNF@BNNS layers synergistically enhance the thermal conductivity of the CNF@BNNS/AgNW/BC composite film, reaching a high value of 8.85 W m‒1 K‒1, which significantly enhances its thermal safety when used in miniaturized electronic device. This work offers new ideas for fabricating biomaterial-based EMI shielding composite films with high comprehensive safety.

Recent advances in multifunctional electromagnetic interference shielding materials

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material is the most effective solution to protect electronic devices and human health from the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation. The study of EMI shielding materials is intensifying in the constantly developing picture of the fourth industrial revolution. Many EMI shielding materials based on metal, carbon, emerging MXene materials, and their composites have been discovered to utilize the EMI shielding performance. However, a huge demand for compact and multi-functional devices requires the integration of new functions into EMI shielding materials. Multifunctional EMI shielding materials perform multiple functions beyond their main function of EMI shielding in a system due to their specific properties. The additional functions can either naturally exist or be specially engineered. This review summarizes the recent progress of cutting-edge multifunctional EMI shielding materials. The possibility of combining multifunction EMI shielding materials, such as strain sensing, humidity sensing, temperature sensing, thermal management, etc., and the difficulties in balancing EMI shielding performance with other functions are also discussed. Lastly, we point out challenges and propose future directions to develop research on multifunctional EMI shielding materials.

Recent Research on Preparation and Application of Smart Joule Heating Fabrics

Multifunctional wearable heaters have attracted much attention for their effective applications in personal thermal management and medical therapy. Compared to passive heating, Joule heating offers significant advantages in terms of reusability, reliable temperature control, and versatile coupling. Joule-heated fabrics make wearable electronics smarter. This review critically discusses recent advances in Joule-heated smart fabrics, focusing on various fabrication strategies based on material-structure synergy. Specifically, various applicable conductive materials with Joule heating effect are first summarized. Subsequently, different preparation methods for Joule heating fabrics are compared, and then their various applications in smart clothing, healthcare, and visual indication are discussed. Finally, the challenges faced in developing these smart Joule heating fabrics and their possible solutions are discussed.

Multifunctional Liquid Metal-Bridged Graphite Nanoplatelets/Aramid Nanofiber Film for Thermal Management

Miniaturization of modern micro-electronic devices urges the development of multi-functional thermal management materials. Traditional polymer composite-based thermal management materials are promising candidates, but they suffer from single functionality, high cost, and low fire-resistance. Herein, a multifunctional liquid metal (LM)-bridged graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs)/ aramid nanofibers (ANFs) film is fabricated via a facile vacuum-assisted self-assembly approach followed by compression. ANFs serve as interfacial binders to link LM and GNPs together via hydrogen bondings and π-π interactions, while LM bridges the adjacent layer of GNPs to endow a fast thermal transport by phonons and electrons. The resultant composite films exhibit a high bidirectional thermal conductivity (In-plane: 29.5 W m-1K-1 and through-plane: 5.3 W m-1K-1), offering a reliable and effective cooling. Moreover, the as-fabricated composite films exhibit superior flame-retardance (peak of heat release rate of 4000J g-1), outstanding Joule heating performance (200 °C at supplied voltage of 3.5 V), and excellent electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE of 62 dB). This work provides an efficient avenue to fabricate multifuntional thermal management materials for micro-electronic devices, battery thermal management, and artificial intelligence.

Hierarchical porous dual-mode thermal management fabrics achieved by regulating solar and body radiations

Personal thermal management (PTM) of fabrics is vital for human health; the ever-changing location of the human body poses a big challenge for fabrics to maintain a favorable metabolic temperature. Herein, a dual-mode thermal management fabric is designed to achieve both cooling and heating functions by regulating simultaneously solar and body radiations. The cooling or heating mode can be exchanged by flipping the fabric without an external energy supply. The passive cooling side consists of an electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fabric with a hierarchical porous structure, exhibiting high sunlight reflectance (91.42%) and an ∼14 °C temperature decrease under direct sunlight irradiation. The co-existence of nanoscale and microscale pores is proven to be essential for improved cooling performances. The other heating side, coated with an MXene layer, shows high photothermal conversion efficiency (37.5%) and outstanding heating capability outdoors. Furthermore, the contrary mid-infrared emissivity of the two sides (high emissivity of the cooling side while low emissivity of the heating side) leads to the dual-mode passive regulation of body thermal energy. Besides, this fabric demonstrates satisfactory wearability and excellent stability. Our work proposes an energy-saving and cost-effective approach for PTM fabrics potentially suitable for various scenarios (e.g., indoors/outdoors, summer/winter, low/high latitude areas).

New Carbon Materials for Multifunctional Soft Electronics

Soft electronics are garnering significant attention due to their wide-ranging applications in artificial skin, health monitoring, human-machine interaction, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things. Various soft physical sensors such as mechanical sensors, temperature sensors, and humidity sensors are the fundamental building blocks for soft electronics. While the fast growth and widespread utilization of electronic devices have elevated life quality, the consequential electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radiation pose potential threats to device precision and human health. Another substantial concern pertains to overheating issues that occur during prolonged operation. Therefore, the design of multifunctional soft electronics exhibiting excellent capabilities in sensing, EMI shielding, and thermal management is of paramount importance. Because of the prominent advantages in chemical stability, electrical and thermal conductivity, and easy functionalization, new carbon materials including carbon nanotubes, graphene and its derivatives, graphdiyne, and sustainable natural-biomass-derived carbon are particularly promising candidates for multifunctional soft electronics. This review summarizes the latest advancements in multifunctional soft electronics based on new carbon materials across a range of performance aspects, mainly focusing on the structure or composite design, and fabrication method on the physical signals monitoring, EMI shielding, and thermal management. Furthermore, the device integration strategies and corresponding intriguing applications are highlighted. Finally, this review presents prospects aimed at overcoming current barriers and advancing the development of state-of-the-art multifunctional soft electronics.

Multi-Functional and Flexible Nano-Silver@MXene Heterostructure-Decorated Graphite Felt for Wearable Thermal Therapy

Wearable heaters with multifunctional performances are urgently required for the future personal health management. However, it is still challengeable to fabricate multifunctional wearable heaters simultaneously with flexibility, air-permeability, Joule heating performance, electromagnetic shielding property, and anti-bacterial ability. Herein, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)@MXene heterostructure-decorated graphite felts are fabricated by introducing MXene nanosheets onto the graphite felts via a simple dip-coating method and followed by a facile in situ growth approach to grow AgNPs on MXene layers. The obtained AgNPs@MXene heterostructure decorated graphite felts not only maintain the intrinsic flexibility, air-permeability and comfort characteristics of the matrixes, but also present excellent Joule heating performance including wide temperature range (30-128 °C), safe operating conditions (0.9-2.7 V), and rapid thermal response (reaching 128 °C within 100 s at 2.7 V). Besides, the multifunctional graphite felts exhibit excellent electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (53 dB) and outstanding anti-bacterial performances (>95% anti-bacterial rate toward Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Staphy-lococcus aureus). This work sheds light on a novel avenue to fabricate multifunctional wearable heaters for personal healthcare and personal thermal management.

Robust and Multifunctional Ti3 C2 Tx /Modified Sawdust Composite Paper for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Wearable Thermal Management

Robust, ultrathin, and environmental-friendliness papers that synergize high-efficiency electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, personal thermal management, and wearable heaters are essential for next-generation smart wearable devices. Herein, MXene nanocomposite paper with a nacre-like structure for EMI shielding and electrothermal/photothermal conversion is fabricated by vacuum filtration of Ti3 C2 Tx MXene and modified sawdust. The hydrogen bonding and highly oriented structure enhance the mechanical properties of the modified sawdust/MXene composite paper (SM paper). The SM paper with 50 wt% MXene content shows a strength of 23 MPa and a toughness of 13 MJ·M-3 . The conductivity of the SM paper is 10 195 S·m-1 , resulting in an EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 67.9 dB and a specific SE value (SSE/t) of 8486 dB·cm2 ·g-1 . In addition, the SM paper exhibits excellent thermal management performance including high light/electro-to-thermal conversion, rapid Joule heating and photothermal response, and sufficient heating stability. Notably, the SM paper exhibits low infrared emissivity and distinguished infrared stealth performance, camouflaging a high-temperature heater surface of 147-81 °C. The SM-based e-skin achieves visualization of Joule heating and realizes human motions monitoring. This work presents a new strategy for designing MXene-based wearable devices with great EMI shielding, artificial intelligence, and thermal management applications.

Structural regulation enabled stable hollow molybdenum diselenide nanosheet anode for ultrahigh energy density sodium ion pouch cell

For the continued use of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), which require matching anode materials, it is crucial to create high energy density energy storage devices. Here, hollow nanoboxes shaped carbon supported sulfur-doped MoSe2 nanosheets (S-MoSe2@NC) are fabricated by in situ growth and heterodoping strategy. This ensures that the MoSe2 nanosheets are tightly anchored to the nanoboxes carbon, and the structure can effectively buffer the volume stress caused by sodium ion (de)intercalation, as well as providing abundant ion/electron migration transportations. As anode for SIBs, the S-MoSe2@NC shows a higher rate capability and excellent cycling stability (431.1 mAh/g after 1100 cycles at 10 A/g). This excellent cycle life and high rate ability are due to the structural stability and outstanding electronic conductance with reduced band gap of the S-MoSe2@NC, as evidenced by the diffusion analysis and theoretical calculation. In order to promote the application of SIBs, the S-MoSe2@NC and NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 were assembled into a pouch cell, and the test found that besides the excellent cycle rate performance, the ultrahigh energy density of 256 Wh kg-1 and flexible characteristics can be achieved. This study has proven that building a structure with a rock-steady foundation and quick ion migration may efficiently control sodium storage and pave the way for novel applications of high-performance transition metal dichalcogenides in sodium storage.
