An Extreme-Environment-Resistant Self-Healing Anti-Icing Coating

Zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-based hydrogels with high toughness, ionic conductivity, and healable capability in cryogenic environments

Extreme environmental conditions often lead to irreversible structural failure and functional degradation in hydrogels, limiting their service life and applicability. Achieving high toughness, self-healing, and ionic conductivity in cryogenic environments is vital to broaden their applications. Herein, we present a novel approach to simultaneously enhance the toughness, self-healing, and ionic conductivity of hydrogels, via inducing non-freezable water within the zwitterionic cellulose-based hydrogel skeleton. This approach enables resulting hydrogel to achieve an exceptional toughness of 10.8 MJ m-3, rapid self-healing capability (98.9 % in 30 min), and high ionic conductivity (2.9 S m-1), even when subjected to -40 °C, superior to the state-of-the-art hydrogels. Mechanism analyses reveal that a significant amount of non-freezable water with robust electrostatic interactions is formed within zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-modified polyurethane molecular networks, imparting superior freezing tolerance and versatility to the hydrogel. Importantly, this strategy harnesses the non-freezable water molecular state of the zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers network, eliminating the need for additional antifreeze and organic solvents. Furthermore, the dynamic Zn coordination within these supramolecular molecule chains enhances interfacial interactions, thereby promoting rapid subzero self-healing and exceptional mechanical strength. Demonstrating its potential, this hydrogel can be used in smart laminated materials, such as aircraft windshields.

Well-Tailored Norbornene-Based Fluorinated Copolymers toward Modulating Icephobicity and Mechanical Robustness

Well-tailored construction of icephobic surfaces with mechanical robustness and investigation of the structure-property relationships at the molecular level are highly desirable. Herein, a series of norbornene-based fluorinated polyolefin copolymers (FPOR-x) with varying norbornenyl dodecafluoroheptyl ester (NDFHE) molar fractions (0-100 mol %) were well-designed and fabricated via living ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) employing NDFHE and norbornenyl pentafluorophenyl ester (NPFPE) as the soft and hard segments, respectively. The mechanical and icephobic properties of the fluorinated copolymers can be regulated by adjusting the soft NDFHE contents. As a result, the well-designed norbornene-based copolymers exhibited a wide range of tunable mechanical properties, including tensile strength ranging from 0.2 to 26.4 MPa, elastic modulus ranging from 0.6 to 593.7 MPa, and breaking elongations ranging from 5718.7% to 3.7%, correlating with the proportion of soft NDFHE content. Furthermore, the synergistic interplay between soft and hard segments, particularly the hardness in the majority and softness in the minority or vice versa, could achieve a significant difference in the local modulus and enhance the propagations of cracks within the three-phase regions (soft regions/hard regions/ice), ultimately leading to a significant reduction in ice shear strength. Notably, FPOR-25% with a tensile strength of 12.0 MPa and an elastic modulus of 227.5 MPa exhibited a remarkably low ice shear strength of 57.7 kPa. This study not only highlights the relationship between the polymer molecular structure and surface icephobic properties but also breaks the limitations of icephobic surfaces with a low modulus.

Fast-Crosslinking Enabled Self-Roughed Polydimethylsiloxane Transparent Superhydrophobic Coating and Its Application in Anti-Liquid-Interference Electrothermal Device

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based transparent and superhydrophobic coatings have important applications, such as anti-icing, corrosion resistance, self-cleaning, etc. However, their applications are limited by the inevitable introduction of nanoparticles/high-temperature/segmented PDMS to facilitate a raspy surface. In this study, a self-roughed, neat PDMS superhydrophobic coating with high transparency is developed via a one-step spray-coating technique. PDMS suspensions with various droplet sizes are synthesized and used as building blocks for raspy surface formation by controlled curing on the warm substrate. The optimal coating exhibits a large water contact angle of 155.4° and transparency (T550 = 82.3%). Meanwhile, the employed spray-coating technique is applicable to modify a plethora of substrates. For proof-of-concept demonstrations, the use of the PDMS hydrophobic coating for anti-liquid-interference electrothermal devices and further transparent observation window for long-term operation in a sub-zero environment is shown successful. The proposed facile synthesis method of hydrophobic PDMS coating is expected to have great potential for a broad range of applications in the large-scale fabrication of fluorine-free, eco-friendly superhydrophobic surfaces.

Facile Preparation of Impalement Resistant, Mechanically Robust and Weather Resistant Photothermal Superhydrophobic Coatings for Anti-/De-icing

Photothermal superhydrophobic coatings hold great promise in addressing the limitations of conventional superhydrophobic anti-icing coatings. However, developing such coatings with excellent impalement resistance, mechanical robustness and weather resistance remains a significant challenge. Here, we report facile preparation of robust photothermal superhydrophobic coatings with all the above advantages. The coatings were prepared by spraying a dispersion consisting of fluorinated silica nanoparticles, a silicone-modified polyester adhesive and photothermal carbon black nanoparticles onto Al alloy plates followed by thermal curing. Thermal curing caused migration of perfluorodecyl polysiloxane from within the coatings to the surface, effectively maintaining a low surface energy despite the presence of the adhesive. Therefore, combined with the hierarchical micro-/nanostructure, dense yet rough nanostructure, adhesion of the adhesive and chemically inert components, the coatings exhibited remarkable superhydrophobicity, impalement resistance, mechanical robustness and weather resistance. Furthermore, the coatings demonstrated excellent photothermal effect even in the -10 °C, 80 % relative humidity and weak sunlight (0.2 sun) environment. Consequently, the coatings showed excellent passive anti-icing and active de-icing performance. Moreover, the coatings have good generalizability and scalability. We are confident that this study will accelerate the practical implementation of photothermal superhydrophobic coatings.

Multi-Scale Superhydrophobic Surface with Excellent Stability and Solar-Thermal Performance for Highly Efficient Anti-Icing and Deicing

Ice accretion can significantly impact the efficiency and safety of outdoor equipment. Solar-thermal superhydrophobic surface is an effective strategy for anti-icing and deicing. However, droplets easily turn to the Wenzel state during the icing and melting cycle processes, significantly increasing the adhesion and making the droplets difficult to remove from the surface. In this work, a triple-scale solar-thermal superhydrophobic surface is prepared on stainless steel 304 by etching, in situ oxidation, and spin-coating TiN nanoparticles for highly efficient deicing and anti-icing. The multi-scale structure enabled the droplets to recover the Cassie state completely after melting. The contact angle decreased from 162.5° to 136.7° during the icing process and gradually increased to 162.1° during the melting process. In addition, metal oxides and TiN nanoparticles enabled the superhydrophobic surface to exhibit a high solar absorptivity (α ¯ solar ${{\bar{\alpha }}_{{\mathrm{solar}}}}$ = 0.925). The synergistic effect of the superhydrophobicity and the solar-thermal performance endowed the designed multi-scale surface with excellent anti-icing and deicing performance. This work contributed to the practical development of anti-icing and deicing applications based on solar-thermal superhydrophobic surfaces.

A simple fabrication of liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane coating for resisting ice adhesion

The rapid realization of efficient anti-icing coatings on diverse substrates is of vital value for practical applications. However, current approaches for rapid preparations of anti-icing coatings are still deficient regarding their surface universality and accessibility. Here, we report a simple processing approach to rapidly form icephobic liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brushes on various substrates, including metals, ceramics, glass, and plastics. A poly(dimethylsiloxane), trimethoxysilane is applied as a reactant under the catalysis of a minimal amount of acid formed by hydrolysis of dichlorodimethylsilane. With such an advantage, this approach is approved to be applicable of coating metal surfaces with less corrosion. The distinctive flexibility of the PDMS chains provides a liquid-like property to the coating showing low contact angle hysteresis and ice adhesion strength. Notably, the ice adhesion strength remains similar across a wide temperature window, from -70 to -10 °C, with a value of 18.4 kPa. The PDMS brushes demonstrate perfect capability for resisting acid and alkali corrosions, ultra-violet degradation, and even tens of icing/deicing cycles. Moreover, the liquid-like coating can also form at supercooling conditions, such as -20 °C, and shows an outstanding anti-icing/deicing performance, which meets the in situ coating reformation requirement under extreme conditions when it is damaged. This instantly forming anti-icing material will benefit from resisting instantaneous ice accretion on surfaces under extremely cold conditions.

Enhanced Anti/De-Icing Performance on Rough Surfaces Based on The Synergistic Effect of Fluorinated Resin and Embedded Graphene

Icing negatively impacts various industrial sectors and daily life, often leading to severe safety problems and substantial economic losses. In this work, a fluorinated resin coating with embedded graphene nanoflakes is prepared using a spin-coating curing process. The results shows that the ice adhesion strength is reduced by ≈97.0% compared to the mirrored aluminum plate, and the icing time is delayed by a factor of 46.3 under simulated solar radiation power of 96 mW cm-2 (1 sun) at an ambient temperature of -15 °C. The superior anti/de-icing properties of the coating are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the fluorinated resin with a low surface energy, the rough structure of the sandblasted aluminum plate, which reduces the contact area, and the embedded graphene nanoflakes with a superior photothermal effect. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonding competition effect between the exposed-edge oxygen-containing functional groups of the embedded graphene nanoflakes and water molecules further improves the anti-icing properties. This work proposes a facile preparation method to prepare coatings with excellent anti/de-icing properties, offering significant potential for large-scale engineering applications.

Superhydrophobic Antifrosting 7075 Aluminum Alloy Surface with Stable Cassie-Baxter State Fabricated through Direct Laser Interference Lithography and Hydrothermal Treatment

Frost formation and accumulation can have catastrophic effects on a wide range of industrial activities. Hence, a dual-scale surface with a stable Cassie-Baxter state is developed to mitigate the frosting problem by utilizing direct laser interference lithography assisted with hydrothermal treatment. The high Laplace pressure tolerance under the evaporation stimulus and prolonged Cassie-Baxter state maintenance under the condensation stimulus demonstrate the stable Cassie-Baxter state. The dual-scale surface exhibits a lengthy frost-delaying time of up to 5277 s at -7 °C due to the stable Cassie-Baxter state. The self-removal of frost is achieved by promoting the mobility of frost melts driven by the released interfacial energy. In addition, the dense flocculent frost layer is observed on the single-scale micro surface, whereas the sparse pearl-shaped frost layer with many voids is obtained on the dual-scale surface. This work will aid in understanding the frosting process on various-scale superhydrophobic surfaces and in the design of antifrosting surfaces.

Highly Efficient Photothermal Icephobic/de-Icing MOF-Based Micro and Nanostructured Surface

Photothermal materials have gained considerable attention in the field of anti-/de-icing due to its environmental friendliness and energy saving. However, it is always significantly challenging to obtain solar thermal materials with hierarchical structure and simultaneously demonstrate both the ultra-long icing delay ability and the superior photothermal de-icing ability. Here, a photothermal icephobic MOF-based micro and nanostructure surface (MOF-MNS) is presented, which consists of micron groove structure and fluorinated MOF nanowhiskers. The optimal MOF-M250 NS can achieve solar absorption of over 98% and produce a high temperature increment of 65.5 °C under 1-sun illumination. Such superior photothermal-conversion mechanism of MOF-M250 NS is elucidated in depth. In addition, the MOF-M250 NS generates an ultra-long icing delay time of ≈3960 s at -18 °C without solar illumination, achieving the longest delay time, which isn't reported before. Due to its excellent solar-to-heat conversation ability, accumulated ice and frost on MOF-M250 NS can be rapidly melted within 720 s under 1-sun illumination and it also holds a high de-icing rate of 5.8 kg m-2 h-1 . MOF-M250 NS possesses the versatility of mechanical robustness, chemical stability, and low temperature self-cleaning, which can synergistically reinforce the usage of icephobic surfaces in harsh conditions.

Self-Healing Silicone Materials: Looking Back and Moving Forward

This review is dedicated to self-healing silicone materials, which can partially or entirely restore their original characteristics after mechanical or electrical damage is caused to them, such as formed (micro)cracks, scratches, and cuts. The concept of self-healing materials originated from biomaterials (living tissues) capable of self-healing and regeneration of their functions (plants, human skin and bones, etc.). Silicones are ones of the most promising polymer matrixes to create self-healing materials. Self-healing silicones allow an increase of the service life and durability of materials and devices based on them. In this review, we provide a critical analysis of the current existing types of self-healing silicone materials and their functional properties, which can be used in biomedicine, optoelectronics, nanotechnology, additive manufacturing, soft robotics, skin-inspired electronics, protection of surfaces, etc.

Inhibition of Defect-Induced Ice Nucleation, Propagation, and Adhesion by Bioinspired Self-Healing Anti-Icing Coatings

Anti-icing coatings on outdoor infrastructures inevitably suffer from mechanical injuries in numerous icing scenarios such as hailstorms, sandstorms, impacts of foreign objects, and icing-deicing cycles. Herein, the mechanisms of surface-defect-induced icing are clarified. At the defects, water molecules exhibit stronger adsorption and the heat transfer rate increases, accelerating the condensation of water vapor as well as ice nucleation and propagation. Moreover, the ice-defect interlocking structure increases the ice adhesion strength. Thus, a self-healing (at -20 °C) antifreeze-protein (AFP)-inspired anti-icing coating is developed. The coating is based on a design that mimics the ice-binding and non-ice-binding sites in AFPs. It enables the coating to markedly inhibit ice nucleation (nucleation temperature < -29.4 °C), prevent ice propagation (propagation rate < 0.00048 cm²/s), and reduce ice adhesion on the surface (adhesion strength < 38.9 kPa). More importantly, the coating can also autonomously self-heal at -20 °C, as a result of multiple dynamic bonds in its structure, to inhibit defect-induced icing processes. The healed coating sustains high anti-icing and deicing performance even under various extreme conditions. This work reveals the in-depth mechanism of defect-induced ice formation as well as adhesion, and proposes a self-healing anti-icing coating for outdoor infrastructures.
