Coupling Engineering of NH4 + Pre-Intercalation and Rich Oxygen Vacancies in Tunnel WO3 Toward Fast and Stable Rocking Chair Zinc-Ion Battery

Molecular Filter Net Synergy with Regulation in Ion Percolation for High-Performance Zn Metal Batteries

The uncontrollable dendrite growth and complex parasitic reactions of Zn metal anodes cause short cycle lives and low Coulombic efficiency, which seriously affect their applications. To address these issues, this research proposes an efficient ion percolating interface constituted by a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HND) for a highly stable and reversible Zn anode. The hydrogen-bonded skeleton acts as a molecular filter net, capturing water molecules by forming targeted hydrogen-bonding systems with them, sufficiently inhibiting parasitic reactions. Additionally, the interaction of the rich-N and -O electrochemically active sites with Zn2+ effectively regulates its percolation, which greatly enhances the diffusion kinetics of Zn2+, thus facilitating rapid and uniform migration of Zn2+ at the anode surface. Through the above synergistic effect, dendrite-free anodes with highly reversible Zn plating/stripping behaviors can be achieved. Hence, the modified Zn anode (HND@Zn) performs a steady cycling time of more than 1700 h at 1 mA cm-2. Moreover, the HND@Cu||Zn asymmetric cell exhibits a stable charge/discharge process of over 1600 cycles with an average Coulombic efficiency of up to 99.6% at 5 mA cm-2. This work provides some conceptions for the evolution and application of high-performance Zn metal batteries.

Oxygen Vacancy-Enriched Bi2SeO5 Nanosheets with Dual Mechanism for Ammonium-Ion Batteries

Ammonium ions feature a light molar mass and small hydrated radius, and the interesting interaction between NH4+ and host materials has attracted widespread attention in aqueous energy storage, while few studies focus on high-performance NH4+ storage anodes. Herein, we present a high-performance inset-type anode for aqueous ammonium-ion batteries (AIBs) based on Bi2SeO5 nanosheets. A reversible NH4+/H+ co-intercalation/deintercalation accompanied by hydrogen bond formation/breaking and a conversion reaction mechanism in layered Bi2SeO5 is proposed according to ex situ characterizations. Accordingly, the optimized Bi2SeO5 anode has a high reversible capacity of 341.03 mAh g-1 at 0.3 A g-1 in 1 M NH4Cl electrolyte and an impressive capacity retention of 86.7% after 7000 cycles at 3 A g-1, which is related to the existence of oxygen vacancies that enhance ion/electron transfer and promote the formation of hydrogen bonds between NH4+ and the host material. When the rocking-chair ammonium-ion battery is assembled using a MnO2 cathode, the device delivers an ultrahigh capacity of 140.73 mAh g-1 at 0.15 A g-1 and energy density of 207.13 Wh kg-1 at the power density of 2985.07 W kg-1. This work provides a promising strategy for designing high-performance anodes for next-generation AIBs.

Converting commercial Bi2O3 particles into Bi2O2Se@Bi4O8Se nanosheets for "rocking chair" zinc-ion batteries

The development of a low-cost, high-capacity, and insertion-type anode is key for promoting "rocking chair" zinc-ion batteries. Herein, commercial Bi2O3 (BiO) particles are transformed into Bi2O2Se@Bi4O8Se (BiOSe) nanosheets through a simple selenylation process. The change in morphology from commercial BiO particle to BiOSe nanosheet leads to an increased specific surface area of the material. The enhanced electronic/ionic conductivity results in its excellent electrochemical kinetics. Ex situ XRD and XPS tests prove the intercalation-type mechanism of BiO and BiOSe as well as the superior electrochemical reversibility of BiOSe compared to BiO. Furthermore, the H+/Zn2+ co-insertion mechanism of BiOSe is revealed. This makes BiOSe to have low discharge plateaus of 0.38/0.68 V, a high reversible capacity of 182 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, and a long cyclic life of 500 cycles at 1 A g-1. Besides, the BiOSe//MnO2 "rocking chair" zinc-ion battery offers a high capacity of ≈90 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1. This work provides a reference for turning commercial material into high-performance anode for "rocking chair" zinc-ion batteries.

Modifying Electronic Structure of Bismuth Telluride Through S Doping and Te Vacancy Engineering for Enhanced Zn-Ion Storage Ability in Aqueous Zn-proton Hybrid Ion Batteries

Bismuth chalcogenides are used as cathode materials in Zn-proton hybrid ion batteries, which exhibit an ultraflat discharge plateau that is favorable for practical applications. Unfortunately, their capacity is not competitive, and their charge storage mechanisms are ambiguous, both of which hinder their further development. In this study, S-doped Bi2 Te3- x (SBT) nanosheets are prepared by tellurizing a Bi2 O2 S precursor using a hydrothermal process. As revealed by density functional theory analyses, the S dopant and its induced Te vacancies can distinctly manipulate the electronic structure of SBT, resulting in decent electrical conductivity and more negative adsorption energy to Zn2+ . These advantages boost the Zn2+ storage ability of SBT materials. Consequently, compared with defect-free Bi2 Te3 , the SBT cathodes have superior specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability.
