In Situ Growth of Iron Sulfide on Fast Charge Transfer V2 C-MXene for Superior Sodium Storage Anodes

Iron Active Center Coordination Reconstruction in Iron Carbide Modified on Porous Carbon for Superior Overall Water Splitting

In this work, a novel liquid nitrogen quenching strategy is engineered to fulfill iron active center coordination reconstruction within iron carbide (Fe3C) modified on biomass-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NC) for initiating rapid hydrogen and oxygen evolution, where the chrysanthemum tea (elm seeds, corn leaves, and shaddock peel, etc.) is treated as biomass carbon source within Fe3C and NC. Moreover, the original thermodynamic stability is changed through the corresponding force generated by liquid nitrogen quenching and the phase transformation is induced with rich carbon vacancies with the increasing instantaneous temperature drop amplitude. Noteworthy, the optimizing intermediate absorption/desorption is achieved by new phases, Fe coordination, and carbon vacancies. The Fe3C/NC-550 (550 refers to quenching temperature) demonstrates outstanding overpotential for hydrogen evolution reaction (26.3 mV at -10 mA cm-2) and oxygen evolution reaction (281.4 mV at 10 mA cm-2), favorable overall water splitting activity (1.57 V at 10 mA cm-2). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm that liquid nitrogen quenching treatment can enhance the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity efficiently by optimizing the adsorption free energy of reaction intermediates. Overall, the above results authenticate that liquid nitrogen quenching strategy open up new possibilities for obtaining highly active electrocatalysts for the new generation of green energy conversion systems.

Hierarchical Architecture Engineering of Branch-Leaf-Shaped Cobalt Phosphosulfide Quantum Dots: Enabling Multi-Dimensional Ion-Transport Channels for High-Efficiency Sodium Storage

New-fashioned electrode hosts for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are elaborately engineered to involve multifunctional active components that can synergistically conquer the critical issues of severe volume deformation and sluggish reaction kinetics of electrodes toward immensely enhanced battery performance. Herein, it is first reported that single-phase CoPS, a new metal phosphosulfide for SIBs, in the form of quantum dots, is successfully introduced into a leaf-shaped conductive carbon nanosheet, which can be further in situ anchored on a 3D interconnected branch-like N-doped carbon nanofiber (N-CNF) to construct a hierarchical branch-leaf-shaped CoPS@C@N-CNF architecture. Both double carbon decorations and ultrafine crystal of the CoPS in-this exquisite architecture hold many significant superiorities, such as favorable train-relaxation, fast interfacial ion-migration, multi-directional migration pathways, and sufficiently exposed Na+ -storage sites. In consequence, the CoPS@C@N-CNF affords remarkable long-cycle durability over 10 000 cycles at 20.0 A g-1 and superior rate capability. Meanwhile, the CoPS@C@N-CNF-based sodium-ion full cell renders the potential proof-of-feasibility for practical applications in consideration of its high durability over a long-term cyclic lifespan with remarkable reversible capacity. Moreover, the phase transformation mechanism of the CoPS@C@N-CNF and fundamental springhead of the enhanced performance are disclosed by in situ X-ray diffraction, ex situ high-resolution TEM, and theoretical calculations.

Interfacial Modulation of Ti3 C2 Tx MXene by Cellulose Nanofibrils to Construct Hybrid Fibers with High Volumetric Specific Capacitance

The intrinsic poor rheological properties of MXene inks result in the MXene nanosheets in dried MXene microfibers prone to self-stacking, which is not conducive to ion transport and diffusion, thus affecting the electrochemical performance of fiber-based supercapacitors. Herein, robust cellulose nanofibrils (CNF)/MXene hybrid fibers with high electrical conductivity (916.0 S cm-1 ) and narrowly distributed mesopores are developed by wet spinning. The interfacial interaction between CNF and MXene can be enhanced by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction due to their rich surface functional groups. The interfacial modulation of MXene by CNF can not only regulate the rheology of MXene spinning dispersion, but also enhance the mechanical strength. Furthermore, the interlayer distance and self-stacking effect of MXene nanosheets are also regulated. Thus, the ion transport path within the fiber material is optimized and ion transport is accelerated. In H2 SO4 electrolyte, a volumetric specific capacitance of up to 1457.0 F cm-3 (1.5 A cm-3 ) and reversible charge/discharge stability are demonstrated. Intriguingly, the assembled supercapacitors exhibit a high-volume energy density of 30.1 mWh cm-3 at 40.0 mW cm-3 . Moreover, the device shows excellent flexibility and cycling stability, maintaining 83% of its initial capacitance after 10 000 charge/discharge cycles. Practical energy supply applications (Power for LED and electronic watch) can be realized.

Engineering CSFe Bond Confinement Effect to Stabilize Metallic-Phase Sulfide for High Power Density Sodium-Ion Batteries

Metallic-phase iron sulfide (e.g., Fe7 S8 ) is a promising candidate for high power density sodium storage anode due to the inherent metal electronic conductivity and unhindered sodium-ion diffusion kinetics. Nevertheless, long-cycle stability can not be achieved simultaneously while designing a fast-charging Fe7 S8 -based anode. Herein, Fe7 S8 encapsulated in carbon-sulfur bonds doped hollow carbon fibers (NHCFs-S-Fe7 S8 ) is designed and synthesized for sodium-ion storage. The NHCFs-S-Fe7 S8 including metallic-phase Fe7 S8 embrace higher electron specific conductivity, electrochemical reversibility, and fast sodium-ion diffusion. Moreover, the carbonaceous fibers with polar CSFe bonds of NHCFs-S-Fe7 S8 exhibit a fixed confinement effect for electrochemical conversion intermediates contributing to long cycle life. In conclusion, combined with theoretical study and experimental analysis, the multinomial optimized NHCFs-S-Fe7 S8 is demonstrated to integrate a suitable structure for higher capacity, fast charging, and longer cycle life. The full cell shows a power density of 1639.6 W kg-1 and an energy density of 204.5 Wh kg-1 , respectively, over 120 long cycles of stability at 1.1 A g-1 . The underlying mechanism of metal sulfide structure engineering is revealed by in-depth analysis, which provides constructive guidance for designing the next generation of durable high-power density sodium storage anodes.

Spatially Confined Fe7S8 Nanoparticles Anchored on a Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosheet Skeleton for High-Rate and Durable Sodium Storage

Iron sulfides are widely explored as anodes of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to high theoretical capacities and low cost, but their practical application is still impeded by poor rate capability and fast capacity decay. Herein, for the first time, we construct highly dispersed Fe₇S₈ nanoparticles anchored on a porous N-doped carbon nanosheet (CN) skeleton (denoted as Fe₇S₈/NC) with high conductivity and numerous active sites via facile ion adsorption and thermal evaporation combined procedures coupled with a gas sulfurization treatment. Nanoscale design coupled with a conductive carbon skeleton can simultaneously mitigate the above obstacles to obtain enhanced structural stability and faster electrode reaction kinetics. With the aid of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the synergistic interaction between CNs and Fe₇S₈ can not only ensure enhanced Na⁺ adsorption ability but also promote the charge transfer kinetics of the Fe₇S₈/NC electrode. Accordingly, the designed Fe₇S₈/NC electrode exhibits remarkable electrochemical performance with superior high-rate capability (451.4 mAh g^-1 at 6 A g^-1) and excellent long-term cycling stability (508.5 mAh g^-1 over 1000 cycles at 4 A g^-1) due to effectively alleviated volumetric variation, accelerated charge transfer kinetics, and strengthened structural integrity. Our work provides a feasible and effective design strategy toward the low-cost and scalable production of high-performance metal sulfide anode materials for SIBs.
