Scalable Synthesis of Holey Deficient 2D Co/NiO Single-Crystal Nanomeshes via Topological Transformation for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

General and Scalable Synthesis of Mesoporous 2D MZrO2 (M = Co, Mn, Ni, Cu, Fe) Nanocatalysts by Amorphous-to-Crystalline Transformation

In modern heterogeneous catalysis, it remains highly challenging to create stable, low-cost, mesoporous 2D photo-/electro-catalysts that carry atomically dispersed active sites. In this work, a general shape-preserving amorphous-to-crystalline transformation (ACT) strategy is developed to dope various transition metal (TM) heteroatoms in ZrO2, which enabled the scalable synthesis of TMs/oxide with a mesoporous 2D structure and rich defects. During the ACT process, the amorphous MZrO2 nanoparticles (M = Fe, Ni, Cu, Co, Mn) are deposited within a confined space created by the NaCl template, and they transform to crystalline 2D ACT-MZrO2 nanosheets in a shape-preserving manner. The interconnected crystalline ACT-MZrO2 nanoparticles thus inherit the same structure as the original MZrO2 precursor. Owing to its rich active sites on the surface and abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs), ACT-CoZrO2 gives superior performance in catalyzing the CO2-to-syngas conversion as demonstrated by experiments and theoretical calculations. The ACT chemistry opens a general route for the scalable synthesis of advanced catalysts with precise microstructure by reconciliating the control of crystalline morphologies and the dispersion of heteroatoms.

Reinforcing 2D Single-Crystal Bi2O2CO3 with Additional Interlayer Carbonates by CO2-Assisted Solid-to-Solid Phase Transition

A facile gaseous CO2 mediated solid-to-solid transformation principle is adopted to insert additional CO3 2- anions into the thin single-crystal nanosheets of Bi2O2CO3, which is built of periodic arrays of intrinsic CO3 2- anions and (Bi2O2)2+ layers. The additional CO3 2- anions create abundant defects. The Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets with rich interlayer CO3 2- exhibit superior electronic properties and charge transfer kinetics than the pristine single-crystal 2D Bi2O2CO3 and display enhanced catalytic activity in photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction and the photocatalytic oxidative degradation of organic pollutants. This work thus illustrates interlayer engineering as a flexible means to build layered 2D materials with excellent properties.

Light-driven thermocatalytic CO2 reduction by CH4 on alumina-cluster-modified Ni nanoparticles with excellent durability and high light-to-fuel efficiency promoted by the photoactivation effect

Using inexhaustible solar energy to drive efficient light-driven thermocatalytic CO2 reduction by CH4 (DRM) is an attractive approach that can synchronously reduce the greenhouse effect and convert solar energy into fuels. However, it is often limited by the intense light intensity required to produce high fuel production rates, and the catalyst deactivation due to severe carbon deposition generated from side reactions. Herein, a nanostructure of alumina-cluster-modified Ni nanoparticles supported on Al2O3 nanorods (ACM-Ni/Al2O3) was synthesized, displaying good catalytic performance under focused UV-vis-IR illumination. By light-driven thermocatalytic DRM on ACM-Ni/Al2O3 at a reduced light intensity of 76.9 kW m-2, the high fuel production rates of H2 (rH2, 65.7 mmol g-1 min-1) and CO (rCO, 78.8 mmol g-1 min-1), as well as an efficient light-to-fuel efficiency (η, 26.3 %) are achieved without additional heating. The rH2 and rCO of light-driven thermocatalysis are 2.9 and 1.9 times higher, respectively, compared to conventional thermocatalysis at the same temperature. We have discovered that high light-driven thermocatalytic activity originates from the photoactivation effect, significantly reducing the apparent activation energy and facilitating C* oxidation as a decisive step in DRM. ACM-Ni/Al2O3 possesses excellent durability and exhibits an extremely low coking rate of 4.40 × 10-3 gc gcatalyst-1 h-1, which is 26.8 times lower than that of the reference sample without Al2O3 cluster modification (R-Ni/Al2O3). This is owing to a decrease in activation energies (Ea) of C* oxidation and an increase in Ea of C* polymerization by the surface modification of Ni nanoparticles with Al2O3 clusters, effectively inhibiting carbon deposition.

Spatial Heterogeneity and Strong Coupling of FeII /FeIII in an Individual Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticle for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

The synthesis and characterization of an FeII /FeIII metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocrystal with spatial heterogeneity that arises from the non-uniform distribution of different valence states is disclosed. The FeII /FeIII -Ni Prussian blue analog (PBA) delivers superior photocatalytic performance in the selective CO2 reduction reaction thanks to the strong FeII /FeIII coupling, with CO yield up to 12.27 mmol g-1 h-1 and 90.6% selectivity under visible-light irradiation. Density functional theory calculation and experimental studies prove that the spatial heterogeneity of FeII /FeIII in the individual MOF nanocrystal not only directs and expedites the charge transfer within a catalyst particle but also creates the heterogeneity of catalytically-active Ni sites for efficient CO2 photoreduction. The current findings add to a growing literature of materials with compositional heterogeneity and provide a reference for future research.

Guest-Induced Multilevel Charge Transport Strategy for Developing Metal-Organic Frameworks to Boost Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Encapsulating photogenerated charge-hopping nodes and space transport bridges within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising method of boosting the photocatalytic performance. Herein, this work embeds electron transfer media (9,10-bis(4-pyridyl)anthracene (BPAN)) in MOF cavities to build multi-level electron transfer paths. The MOF cavities are accurately regulated to investigate the significance of the multi-level electron transfer paths in the process of CO2 photoreduction by evaluating the difference in the number of guest media. The prepared MOFs, {[Co(BPAN)(1,4-dicarboxybenzene)(H2 O)2 ]·BPAN·2H2 O} and {[Co(BPAN)2 (4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid)2 (H2 O)2 ]·2BPAN·2H2 O} (denoted as BPAN-Co-1 and BPAN-Co-2), exhibit efficient visible-light-driven CO2 conversion properties. The CO photoreduction efficacy of BPAN-Co-2 (5598 µmol g-1  h-1 ) is superior to that of most reported MOF-based catalysts. In addition, the enhanced CO2 photoreduction ability is supported by density functional theory (DFT). This work illustrates the feasibility of realizing charge separation characteristics in MOF catalysts at the molecular level, and provides new insight for designing high-performance MOFs for artificial photosynthesis.
