Synergistically Designed Dual Interfaces to Enhance the Electrochemical Performance of MoO2 /MoS2 in Na- and Li-Ion Batteries

Coordination and Hydrogen Bond Chemistry in Tungsten Oxide@Polyaniline Composite toward High-Capacity Aqueous Ammonium Storage

Aqueous ammonium ion batteries (AAIBs) have garnered significant attention due to their unique energy storage mechanism. However, their progress is hindered by the relatively low capacities of NH4 + host materials. Herein, the study proposes an electrodeposited tungsten oxide@polyaniline (WOx@PANI) composite electrode as a NH4 + host, which achieves an ultrahigh capacity of 280.3 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1, surpassing the vast majority of previously reported NH4 + host materials. The synergistic interaction of coordination chemistry and hydrogen bond chemistry between the WOx and PANI enhances the charge storage capacity. Experimental results indicate that the strong interfacial coordination bonding (N: →W6+) effectively modulates the chemical environment of W atoms, enhances the protonation level of PANI, and thus consequently the conductivity and stability of the composites. Spectroscopy analysis further reveals a unique NH4 +/H+ co-insertion mechanism, in which the interfacial hydrogen bond network (N-H···O) accelerates proton involvement in the energy storage process and activates the Grotthuss hopping conduction of H+ between the hydrated tungsten oxide layers. This work opens a new avenue to achieving high-capacity NH4 + storage through interfacial chemistry interactions, overcoming the capacity limitations of NH4 + host materials for aqueous energy storage.

Engineering sulfur defective Bi2S3@C with remarkably enhanced electrochemical kinetics of lithium-ion batteries

Introducing the appropriate vacancies to augment the active sites and improve the electrochemical kinetics while maintaining high cyclability is a major challenge for its widespread application in electrochemical energy storage. Here, core-shell structured Bi2S3@C with sulfur vacancies was prepared by hydrothermal method and one-step carbonization/sulfuration process, which significantly improves the intrinsic electrical conductivity and ion transport efficiency of Bi2S3. Additionally, the uniform protective carbon layer around surface of composite maintains structural stability and effectively alleviates volume expansion during alloying/dealloying. As a result, the BSC-500 anode exhibits a brilliant reversible capacity of 636 mAh/g at 0.2 A/g and a long-term stable capacity of 524 mAh/g for 500 cycles at a high current density of 3 A/g in lithium-ion batteries. In addition, the assembled Bi2S3@C//LiCoO2 full cell delivered a capacity of 184 mAh/g at 1 A/g and excellent cyclability (125 mAh/g after 1000 cycles). The proposed strategy of combining sulfur vacancies with a core-shell structure to improve the electrochemical kinetics of Bi2S3 in lithium-ion batteries off the prospect for practical applications of transition metal sulfide anodes.

Design of heterostructured hydrangea-like FeS2/MoS2 encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon as high-performance anode for potassium-ion capacitors

The means of structural hybridization such as heterojunction construction and carbon-coating engineering for facilitating charge transfer and electron transport are considered viable strategies to address the challenges associated with the low rate capability and poor cycling stability of sulfide-based anodes in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Motivated by these concepts, we have successfully prepared a hydrangea-like bimetallic sulfide heterostructure encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (FMS@NC) using a simple solvothermal method, followed by poly-dopamine wrapping and a one-step sulfidation/carbonization process. When served as an anode for PIBs, this FMS@NC demonstrates a high specific capacity (585 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A/g) and long cycling stability. Synergetic effects of mitigated volume expansions and enhanced conductivity that are responsbile for such high performance have been verified to originate from the heterostructured sulfides and the N-doped carbon matrix. Meanwhile, comprehensive characterization reveals existence of an intercalation-conversion hybrid K-ion storage mechanism in this material. Impressively, a K-ion capacitor with the FMS@NC anode and a commercial activated carbon cathode exhibits a superior energy density of up to 192 Wh kg-1, a high power density, and outstanding cycling stability. This study provides constructive guidance for designing high-performance and durable potassium-ion storage anodes for next-generation energy storage devices.

Trifunctional L-Cysteine Assisted Construction of MoO2/MoS2/C Nanoarchitecture Toward High-Rate Sodium Storage

The volume collapse and slow kinetics reaction of anode materials are two key issues for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, an "embryo" strategy is proposed for synthesis of nanorod-embedded MoO2/MoS2/C network nanoarchitecture as anode for SIBs with high-rate performance. Interestingly, L-cysteine which plays triple roles including sulfur source, reductant, and carbon source can be utilized to produce the sulfur vacancy-enriched heterostructure. Specifically, L-cysteine can combine with metastable monoclinic MoO3 nanorods at room temperature to encapsulate the "nutrient" of MoOx analogues (MoO2.5(OH)0.5 and MoO3·0.5H2O) and hydrogen-deficient L-cysteine in the "embryo" precursor affording for subsequent in situ multistep heating treatment. The resultant MoO2/MoS2/C presents a high-rate capability of 875 and 420 mAh g-1 at 0.5 and 10 A g-1, respectively, which are much better than the MoS2-based anode materials reported by far. Finite element simulation and analysis results verify that the volume expansion can be reduced to 42.8% from 88.8% when building nanorod-embedded porous network structure. Theoretical calculations reveal that the sulfur vacancies and heterointerface engineering can promote the adsorption and migration of Na+ leading to highly enhanced thermodynamic and kinetic reaction. The work provides an efficient approach to develop advanced electrode materials for energy storage.

Heterogeneous MoS2 Nanosheets on Porous TiO2 Nanofibers toward Fast and Reversible Sodium-Ion Storage

2D layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has garnered considerable attention as an attractive electrode material in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), but sluggish mass transfer kinetic and capacity fading make it suffer from inferior cycle capability. Herein, hierarchical MoS2 nanosheets decorated porous TiO2 nanofibers (MoS2 NSs@TiO2 NFs) with rich oxygen vacancies are engineered by microemulsion electrospinning method and subsequent hydrothermal/heat treatment. The MoS2 NSs@TiO2 NFs improves ion/electron transport kinetic and long-term cycling performance through distinctive porous structure and heterogeneous component. Consequently, the electrode exhibits excellent long-term Na storage capacity (298.4 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 over 1100 cycles and 235.6 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1 over 7200 cycles). Employing Na3V2(PO4)3 as cathode, the full cell maintains a desirable capacity of 269.6 mAh g-1 over 700 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. The stepwise intercalation-conversion and insertion/extraction endows outstanding Na+ storage performance, which yields valuable insight into the advancement of fast-charging and long-cycle life SIBs anode materials.

3D Fast Sodium Transport Network of MoS2 Endowed by Coupling of Sulfur Vacancies and Sn Doping for Outstanding Sodium Storage

A sulfur vacancy-rich, Sn-doped as well as carbon-coated MoS2 composite (Vs-SMS@C) is rationally synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method combined with ball-milling reduction, which enhances the sodium storage performance. Benefiting from the 3D fast Na+ transport network composed of the defective carbon coating, Mo─S─C bonds, enlarged interlayer spacing, S-vacancies, and lattice distortion in the composite, the Na+ storage kinetics is significantly accelerated. As expected, Vs-SMS@C releases an ultrahigh reversible capacity of 1089 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, higher than the theoretical capacity. It delivers a satisfactory capacity of 463 mAh g-1 at a high current density of 10 A g-1, which is the state-of-the-art rate capability compared to other MoS2 based sodium ion battery anodes to the knowledge. Moreover, a super long-term cycle stability is achieved by Vs-SMS@C, which keeps 91.6% of the initial capacity after 3000 cycles under the current density of 5 A g-1 in the voltage of 0.3-3.0 V. The sodium storage mechanism of Vs-SMS@C is investigated by employing electrochemical methods and ex situ techniques. The synergistic effect between S-vacancies and doped-Sn is evidenced by DFT calculations. This work opens new ideas for seeking excellent metal sulfide anodes.

Facile preparation of MoO3@Mo2CTxnanocomposite with high lithium storage performance byin situoxidation

In this work, a new MoO3@Mo2CTxnanocomposite was prepared from two-dimensional (2D) Mo2CTxMXene byin situoxidization in air, which exhibited wonderful lithium-storage performance as anodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The precursor Mo2CTxwas synthesized from Mo2Ga2C by selective etching of NH4F at 180 °C for 24 h. Thereafter, the Mo2CTxwas oxidized in air at 450 °C for 30 min to obtain MoO3@Mo2CTxnanocomposite. In the composite,in situgenerated MoO3nanocrystals pillar the layer structure of Mo2CTxMXene, which increases the interlayer space of Mo2CTxfor Li storage and enhances the structure stability of the composite. Mo2CTx2D sheets provide a conductive substrate for MoO3nanocrystals to enhance the Li+accessibility. As anodes of LIBs, the final discharge specific capacity of the MoO3@Mo2CTxcomposite was 511.1 mAh g-1at a current density of 500 mA g-1after 100 cycles, which is about 36.7 times that of pure Mo2CTxMXene (13.9 mAh g-1) and 3.2 times that of pure MoO3(159.9 mAh g-1). In the composites, both Mo2CTxand MoO3provide high lithium storage capacity and can enhance the performance of each other. Moreover, this composite can be made by a facile method ofin situoxidation. Therefore, the MoO3@Mo2CTxMXene nanocomposite is a promising anode of LIB with high performance.

MoO2/t-C3N4 Heterogeneous Materials with Bidirectional Catalysis for the Rapid Conversion of S Species in Li-S Batteries

Li-S batteries have drawn a lot of attention for their high theoretical specific capacity and significant economic benefits. However, the shuttle effect of polysulfides prevents them from being used widely. To tackle this difficulty, a heterogeneous structure based on tubular carbon nitride with evenly dispersed molybdenum dioxide nanoparticles (MoO2/t-C3N4) as the S host is constructed in this work. As a polar material with a large specific surface area, MoO2/t-C3N4 has a strong anchoring effect on polysulfide. Additionally, the heterogeneous material has excellent bidirectional catalytic ability for the redox process of S species based on the action of the built-in electric field formed by electron directional transfer. Not only does it improve the reaction kinetics of the redox process of the polysulfides but it also prevents polysulfides from accumulating on the surface of the modified material and deactivating it, further improving the utilization of the active material. Thus, MoO2/t-C3N4/S shows the high initial-discharge specific capacity of 812.7 mAh g-1 at the current density of 5C, and the Coulombic efficiency is maintained at more than 95% after 400 charge/discharge cycles. Moreover, MoO2/t-C3N4/S achieved a capacity retention of 89% after 100 cycles at the current density of 0.1C under the high S loading. Therefore, the research results of this work provide a trustworthy reference for the future commercial application of Li-S batteries.

The Oxygen Evolution Reaction at MoS2 Edge Sites: The Role of a Solvent Environment in DFT-Based Molecular Simulations

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to study the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the edges of stripes of monolayer molybdenum disulfide. Experimentally, this material has been shown to evolve oxygen, albeit with low efficiency. Previous DFT studies have traced this low catalytic performance to the unfavourable adsorption energies of some reaction intermediates on the MoS₂ edge sites. In this work, we study the effects of the aqueous liquid surrounding the active sites. A computational approach is used, where the solvent is modeled as a continuous medium providing a dielectric embedding of the catalyst and the reaction intermediates. A description at this level of theory can have a profound impact on the studied reactions: the calculated overpotential for the OER is lowered from 1.15 eV to 0.77 eV. It is shown that such variations in the reaction energetics are linked to the polar nature of the adsorbed intermediates, which leads to changes in the calculated electronic charge density when surrounded by water. These results underline the necessity to computationally account for solvation effects, especially in aqueous environments and when highly polar intermediates are present.
