Bioinspired Hydrophobicity Coupled with Single Fe-N4 Sites Promotes Oxygen Diffusion for Efficient Zinc-Air Batteries

Single-atom Mn sites confined into hierarchically porous core-shell nanostructures for improved catalysis of oxygen reduction

Applications of zinc-air batteries are partially limited by the slow kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR); Thus, developing effective strategies to address the compatibility issue between performance and stability is crucial, yet it remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose an in situ gas etching-thermal assembly strategy with an in situ-grown graphene-like shell that will favor Mn anchoring. Gas etching allows for the simultaneous creation of mesopore-dominated carbon cores and ultrathin carbon layer shells adorned entirely with highly dispersed Mn-N4 single-atom sites. This approach effectively resolves the compatibility issue between activity and stability in a single step. The unique core-shell structure allows for the full exposure of active sites and effectively prevents the agglomerations and dissolution of Mn-N4 sites in cores. The corresponding half-wave potential for ORR is up to 0.875 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) in 0.1 M KOH. The gained catalyst (Mn-N@Gra-L)-assembled zinc-air battery has a high peak power density (242 mW cm-2) and a durability of ∼ 115 h. Furthermore, replacing the zinc anode achieved a stable cyclic discharge platform of ∼ 20 h at varying current densities. Forming more fully exposed and stable existing Mn-N4 sites is a governing factor for improving the electrocatalytic ORR activity, significantly cycling durability, and reversibility of zinc-air batteries.

Modification of carbon nanofibers for boosting oxygen electrocatalysis

Oxygen electrocatalysis is a key process for many effective energy conversion techniques, which requires the development of high-performance electrocatalysts. Carbon nanofibers featuring good electronic conductivity, large specific surface area, high axial strength and modulus, and good resistance toward harsh environments have thus been recognized as reinforcements in oxygen electrocatalysis. This review summarizes the recent progress on carbon nanofibers as electrocatalysts for oxygen electrocatalysis, with special focus on the modulation of carbon nanofibers for further elevating their electrocatalytic performance, which includes morphological and structural engineering, surface and pore size distribution, defect engineering, and coupling with other electroactive materials. Additionally, the correlation between the geometrical/electronic structure of their active centers and electrocatalytic activity is systematically discussed. Finally, conclusions and perspectives of this interesting research field are presented, which we hope will provide guidance for the future fabrication of more advanced carbon-fiber-based electrocatalysts.

In Situ Construction of Zinc-Mediated Fe, N-Codoped Hollow Carbon Nanocages with Boosted Oxygen Reduction for Zn-Air Batteries

The rational design of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with unique morphology and luxuriant porous structure is significant but challenging for accelerating the reaction kinetics of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, zinc-mediated Fe, N-codoped carbon nanocages (Zn-FeNCNs) are synthesized by pyrolyzing the polymerized iron-doped polydopamine on the surface of the ZIF-8 crystal polyhedron. The formation of the chelate between polydopamine and Fe serves as the covering layer to prevent the porous carbon nanocages from collapsing and boosts enough exposure and utilization of metal-based active species during carbonization. Furthermore, both the theoretical calculation and experimental results show that the strong interaction between polyhedron and polydopamine facilitates the evolution of high-activity zinc-modulated FeNx sites and electron transportation and then stimulates the excellent bifunctional catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). As expected, the Zn-air battery with Zn-FeNCNs as an air cathode displays a superior power density (256 mW cm-2) and a high specific capacity (813.3 mA h gZn-1), as well as long-term stability over 1000 h. Besides, when this catalyst is applied to the solid-state battery, the device exhibited outstanding mechanical stability and a high round-trip efficiency under different bending angles.

Local reaction environment in electrocatalysis

Beyond conventional electrocatalyst engineering, recent studies have unveiled the effectiveness of manipulating the local reaction environment in enhancing the performance of electrocatalytic reactions. The general principles and strategies of local environmental engineering for different electrocatalytic processes have been extensively investigated. This review provides a critical appraisal of the recent advancements in local reaction environment engineering, aiming to comprehensively assess this emerging field. It presents the interactions among surface structure, ions distribution and local electric field in relation to the local reaction environment. Useful protocols such as the interfacial reactant concentration, mass transport rate, adsorption/desorption behaviors, and binding energy are in-depth discussed toward modifying the local reaction environment. Meanwhile, electrode physical structures and reaction cell configurations are viable optimization methods in engineering local reaction environments. In combination with operando investigation techniques, we conclude that rational modifications of the local reaction environment can significantly enhance various electrocatalytic processes by optimizing the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the reaction interface. We also outline future research directions to attain a comprehensive understanding and effective modulation of the local reaction environment.

Recent progress of Ni-based nanomaterials for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction at large current density

The precise design and development of high-performing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for the production of industrial hydrogen gas through water electrolysis has been a widely studied topic. A profound understanding of the nature of electrocatalytic processes reveals that Ni-based catalysts are highly active toward OER that can stably operate at a high current density for a long period of time. Given the current gap between research and applications in industrial water electrolysis, we have completed a systematic review by constructively discussing the recent progress of Ni-based catalysts for electrocatalytic OER at a large current density, with special focus on the morphology and composition regulation of Ni-based electrocatalysts for achieving extraordinary OER performance. This review will facilitate future research toward rationally designing next-generation OER electrocatalysts that can meet industrial demands, thereby promoting new sustainable solutions for energy shortage and environment issues.

Unraveling the Electron Transfer Effect of Single-Metal Ce-N4 Sites via Mesopore-Coupling for Boosted Oxygen Reduction Activity

The development of cerium (Ce) single-atom (SA) electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with high active-site utilization and intrinsic activity has become popular recently but remains challenging. Inspired by an interesting phenomenon that pore-coupling with single-metal cerium sites can accelerate the electron transfer predicted by density functional theory calculations, here, a facile strategy is reported for directional design of a highly active and stable Ce SA catalyst (Ce SA/MC) by the coupling of single-metal Ce-N4 sites and mesopores in nanocarbon via pore-confinement-pyrolysis of Ce/phenanthroline complexes combined with controlling the formation of Ce oxides. This catalyst delivers a comparable ORR catalytic activity with a half-wave potential of 0.845 V versus RHE to the Pt/C catalyst. Also, a Ce SA/MC-based zinc-air battery (ZAB) has exhibited a higher energy density (924 Wh kgZn -1 ) and better long-term cycling durability than a Pt/C-based ZAB. This proposed strategy may open a door for designing efficient rare-earth metal catalysts with single-metal sites coupling with porous structures for next-generation energy devices.

Zn-Induced Synthesis of Porous Fe-N,S-C Electrocatalyst with Iron-Based Active Sites Containing Sulfides, Oxides and Nitrides for Efficient Oxygen Reduction and Zinc-Air Batteries

There is an urgent need to design and synthesize non-noble metal electrocatalysts (NNMEs) for the replacement of platinum-based electrocatalysts to enhance the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for Zn-air batteries and fuel cells. Herein, Fe-N,S-C materials were fabricated through two steps: first, reprecipitating hemin by adjusting the pH and, then, decorating it with melamine and cysteine in the presence of Zn2+. The resulting Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) was prepared after pyrolysis at 950 °C. Using this method, abundant iron-based active species with good dispersion were obtained. The fabrication of more micropores in Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) plays a positive role in the improvement of ORR activity. On comparison, Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) outperforms Fe-N,S-C-950 and Fe-N-C-950 (Zn) with respect to the ORR due to its larger specific surface area, porous structure, multiple iron-based active sites and N- and S-doped C. Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) achieves outstanding ORR performances, including a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.844 V and 0.715 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 M KOH and 0.1 M HClO4 solution, respectively. In addition, Fe-N,S-C-950 (Zn) shows an outstanding Zn-air battery performance with an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.450 V and a peak power density of 121.9 mW cm-2, which is higher than that of 20 wt% Pt/C. As a result, the as-prepared electrocatalyst in this work shows the development of the Zn-assisted strategy combined with the assembly of porphyrins as NNMEs for the enhancement of the ORR in both alkaline and acidic solutions.
