Cooperative Boron and Vanadium Doping of Nickel Phosphides for Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline and Anion Exchange Membrane Water/Seawater Electrolyzers

Insights into the pH effect on hydrogen electrocatalysis

Hydrogen electrocatalytic reactions, including the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), play a crucial role in a wide range of energy conversion and storage technologies. However, the HER and HOR display anomalous non-Nernstian pH dependent kinetics, showing two to three orders of magnitude sluggish kinetics in alkaline media compared to that in acidic media. Fundamental understanding of the origins of the intrinsic pH effect has attracted substantial interest from the electrocatalysis community. More critically, a fundamental molecular level understanding of this effect is still debatable, but is essential for developing active, stable, and affordable fuel cells and water electrolysis technologies. Against this backdrop, in this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the intrinsic pH effect on hydrogen electrocatalysis, covering the experimental observations, underlying principles, and strategies for catalyst design. We discuss the strengths and shortcomings of various activity descriptors, including hydrogen binding energy (HBE) theory, bifunctional theory, potential of zero free charge (pzfc) theory, 2B theory and other theories, across different electrolytes and catalyst surfaces, and outline their interrelations where possible. Additionally, we highlight the design principles and research progress in improving the alkaline HER/HOR kinetics by catalyst design and electrolyte optimization employing the aforementioned theories. Finally, the remaining controversies about the pH effects on HER/HOR kinetics as well as the challenges and possible research directions in this field are also put forward. This review aims to provide researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic pH effect and inspire the development of more cost-effective and durable alkaline water electrolyzers (AWEs) and anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AMFCs) for a sustainable energy future.

Vanadium-Doped Heterogeneous Bimetallic Phosphides Derived from Layered Double Hydroxides for Saline Water Splitting

The development of energy- and time-saving synthetic methods to prepare bifunctional and high stability catalysts are vital for overall water splitting. Here, V-doped nickel-iron hydroxide precursor by etching NiFe foam (NFF) at room temperature with dual chloride solution ("NaCl-VCl3"), is obtained then phosphating to obtain V-Ni2P-FeP/NFF as efficient bifunctional (oxygen/hydrogen exchange reaction, OER/HER) electrocatalysts, denoted as NFF(V, Na)-P. The NFF(V, Na)-P requires only 185 and 117 mV overpotentials to reach 10 mA cm-2 for OER and HER. When used as a catalyst for water splitting in a full cell, it can be stably sustained for more than 1000 h in alkaline brine electrolysis at both current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm-2. In situ Raman analyses and density functional theory (DFT) show that the V-doping-induced surface remodeling generates hydroxyl oxides as the true catalytic active centers, which not only enhances the reaction kinetics, but also reduces the free energy change in the rate-determining step. This work provides a cost-effective substrate self-derivation method to convert commercial NFF into a powerful catalyst for electrolytic brine, offering a unique route to the development of efficient electrocatalysts for saline water splitting.

Optimized Transition Metal Phosphides for Direct Seawater Electrolysis: Current Trends

Seawater electrolysis presents a viable route for sustainable large-scale hydrogen production, yet its practical application is hindered by several technical challenges. These include the sluggish kinetics of hydrogen evolution, poor stability, cation deposition at the cathode, electrode corrosion, and competing chloride oxidation at the anode. To overcome these obstacles, the development of innovative electrocatalysts is crucial. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have emerged as promising candidates owing to their superior catalytic performance and tunable structural properties. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent progress in the structural engineering of TMPs tailored for efficient seawater electrolysis. We delve into the catalytic mechanisms underpinning hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions in different pH conditions, along with the detrimental side reactions that impede hydrogen production efficiency. Several methods to prepare TMPs are then introduced. Additionally, detailed discussions on structural modifications and interface engineering tactics are presented, showcasing strategies to enhance the activity and durability of TMP electrocatalysts. By analyzing current research findings, our review aims to inform ongoing research endeavors and foster advancements in seawater electrolysis for practical and ecologically sound hydrogen generation.

Boron-Doped Dinickel Phosphide to Enhance Polysulfide Conversion and Suppress Shuttling in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are promising for next-generation high-energy energy storage systems. However, the slow reaction kinetics render mobile polysulfides hardly controlled, yielding shuttling effects and eventually damaging Li metal anodes. To improve the cyclability of Li-S batteries, high-efficiency catalysts are desired to accelerate polysulfide conversion and suppress the shuttling effect. Herein, we studied a doping system with Ni2P and Ni2B as the end members and found a B-doped Ni2P catalyst that demonstrates high activity for Li-S batteries. As anionic dopants, B demonstrates an interesting reverse electron transfer to P and tunes the electronic structure of Ni2P dramatically. The resultant B-doped Ni2P exhibits short Ni-B bonds and strong Ni-S interaction, and the electron donation of B to P further enhances the adsorption of polysulfide on catalysts. The S-S bonds of polysulfides were activated appropriately, therefore decreasing a low energy barrier for conversion reactions.

In Situ Construction of Built-In Opposite Electric Field Balanced Surface Adsorption for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Achieving a balance between H-atom adsorption and binding with H2 desorption is crucial for catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, the feasibility of designing and implementing built-in opposite electric fields (OEF) is demonstrated to enable optimal H atom adsorption and H2 desorption using the Ni3(BO3)2/Ni5P4 heterostructure as an example. Through density functional theory calculations of planar averaged potentials, it shows that opposite combinations of inward and outward electric fields can be achieved at the interface of Ni3(BO3)2/Ni5P4, leading to the optimization of the H adsorption free energy (ΔGH*) near electric neutrality (0.05 eV). Based on this OEF concept, the study experimentally validated the Ni3(BO3)2/Ni5P4 system electrochemically forming Ni3(BO3)2 through cyclic voltammetry scanning of B-doped Ni5P4. The surface of Ni3(BO3)2 undergoes reconstruction, as characterized by Grazing Incidence Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (GIWAXS) and in situ Raman spectroscopy. The resulting catalyst exhibits excellent HER activity in alkaline media, with a low overpotential of 33 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and stability maintained for over 360 h. Therefore, the design strategy of build-in opposite electric field enables the development of high-performance HER catalysts and presents a promising approach for electrocatalyst advancement.

Anion doping and interfacial effects in B-Ni5P4/Ni2P for promoting urea-assisted hydrogen production in alkaline media

A bifunctional catalyst used for urea oxidation-assisted hydrogen production can efficiently catalyze the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) simultaneously, thus simplifying electrolytic cell installation and reducing the cost. Constructing the heterointerface of two components or species and doping heteroatom are effective strategies to improve the performance of electrocatalysts, which could regulate the local electronic structure of the catalysts at their interface region, adjust their orbital overlap, and achieve enhanced catalytic performance. In this study, a simple hydrothermal method was studied for the preparation of B-doped Ni5P4/Ni2P heterostructures on nickel foam (B-Ni5P4/Ni2P@NF). Under 1 M KOH at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, an overpotential of 76 mV was obtained for the HER. When 0.3 M urea was added to 1 M KOH, the performance of the prepared catalyst was greatly improved. When the current density reached 10 mA cm-2, the potential was only 1.35 V. In addition, urea-assisted overall water splitting voltage was only 1.41 V. Thus, the B-Ni5P4/Ni2P catalyst possess excellent electrocatalytic activity. The main reason for the excellent properties of the electrocatalyst is the construction of heterostructure, which regulates the electronic structure of the catalyst at its interface and generates a new efficient active site. In addition, the doping of B atoms further promotes the charge transfer rate, thus strengthening the interaction between two phases and improving the catalytic performance. This study provides a simple, environmentally friendly, and rapid design method to prepare an active bi-functional electrocatalyst that has a positive effect on urea-assisted overall water splitting.

The Recent Progresses of Electrodes and Electrolysers for Seawater Electrolysis

The utilization of renewable energy for hydrogen production presents a promising pathway towards achieving carbon neutrality in energy consumption. Water electrolysis, utilizing pure water, has proven to be a robust technology for clean hydrogen production. Recently, seawater electrolysis has emerged as an attractive alternative due to the limitations of deep-sea regions imposed by the transmission capacity of long-distance undersea cables. However, seawater electrolysis faces several challenges, including the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the competing chlorine evolution reaction (CER) processes, electrode degradation caused by chloride ions, and the formation of precipitates on the cathode. The electrode and catalyst materials are corroded by the Cl- under long-term operations. Numerous efforts have been made to address these issues arising from impurities in the seawater. This review focuses on recent progress in developing high-performance electrodes and electrolyser designs for efficient seawater electrolysis. Its aim is to provide a systematic and insightful introduction and discussion on seawater electrolysers and electrodes with the hope of promoting the utilization of offshore renewable energy sources through seawater electrolysis.

Design and multilevel regulation of transition metal phosphides for efficient and industrial water electrolysis

Renewable energy electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen is an effective measure to break the energy dilemma. However, achieving activity and stability at a high current density is still a key problem in water electrolyzers. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs), with high activity and relative inexpensiveness, have become excellent candidates for the production of highly pure green hydrogen for industrial applications. In this mini-review, multilevel regulation strategies including nanoscale control, surface composition and interface structure design of high-performance TMPs for hydrogen evolution are systematically summarized. On this basis, in order to achieve large-scale hydrogen production in industry, the hydrogen evolution performance and stability of TMPs at a high current density are also discussed. Peculiarly, the practical application and requirements in proton exchange membrane (PEM) or anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers can guide the advanced design of regulatory strategies of TMPs for green hydrogen production from renewable energy. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the future development trend of TMPs for efficient and industrial water electrolysis are given.

Triple roles of Ni(OH)2 promoting the electrocatalytic activity and stability of Ni3S4@Ni(OH)2 in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers

Developing high performance and durable electrocatalysts is crucial for the practical application of large-scale water splitting under high current density. Here, we constructed a Mott-Schottky heterojunction bifunctional electrocatalyst coating of Ni3S4 with Ni(OH)2 thin film supported on Ni foam substrate (Ni3S4@Ni(OH)2) for anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs). Remarkably, the η500 is as low as 274.6 mV toward the hydrogen evolution reaction and 423.8 mV toward the oxygen evolution reaction. AEMWEs deliver a stable performance that achieves current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 1.84 and 1.95 V, respectively. In particular, the Ni3S4@Ni(OH)2 exhibits durable stability for 100 h at 500 mA cm-2 without significant degradation and uses 0.75 kW·h of electricity less than commercial Ni foam electrode to produce each standard cubic meter of hydrogen gas at 500 mA cm-2. The excellent performance is ascribed to the triple roles of Ni(OH)2, which prevent the inner Ni3S4 from decomposing during the reaction process, promoting the dissociation of water and formation of adsorbed hydrogen intermediate and accelerating electron transfer ability due to the Mott-Schottky heterojunction between Ni(OH)2 and Ni3S4. This work sheds light on the development of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts based on non-precious transition metals for AEMWEs.
