Multifunctional Chiral Chemically-Powered Micropropellers for Cargo Transport and Manipulation

Practical applications of synthetic self-propelled nano and microparticles for microrobotics, targeted drug delivery, and manipulation at the nanoscale are rapidly expanding. However, fabrication limitations often hinder progress, resulting in relatively simple shapes and limited functionality. Here, taking advantage of 3D nanoscale printing, chiral micropropellers powered by the hydrogen peroxide reduction reaction are fabricated. Due to their chirality, the propellers exhibit multifunctional behavior controlled by an applied magnetic field: spinning in place (loitering), directed migration in the prescribed direction, capture, and transport of polymer cargo particles. Design parameters of the propellers are optimized by computation modeling based on mesoscale molecular dynamics. It is predicted by computer simulations, and confirmed experimentally, that clockwise rotating propellers attract each other and counterclockwise repel. These results shed light on how chirality and shape optimization enhance the functionality of synthetic autonomous micromachines.

Ultrasound robotics for precision therapy

In recent years, the application of microrobots in precision therapy has gained significant attention. The small size and maneuverability of these micromachines enable them to potentially access regions that are difficult to reach using traditional methods; thus, reducing off-target toxicities and maximizing treatment effectiveness. Specifically, acoustic actuation has emerged as a promising method to exert control. By harnessing the power of acoustic energy, these small machines potentially navigate the body, assemble at the desired sites, and deliver therapies with enhanced precision and effectiveness. Amidst the enthusiasm surrounding these miniature agents, their translation to clinical environments has proven difficult. The primary objectives of this review are threefold: firstly, to offer an overview of the fundamental acoustic principles employed in the field of microrobots; secondly, to assess their current applications in medical therapies, encompassing tissue targeting, drug delivery or even cell infiltration; and lastly, to delve into the continuous efforts aimed at integrating acoustic microrobots into in vivo applications.

A Free-Standing Chitosan Membrane Prepared by the Vibration-Assisted Solvent Casting Method

Much attention has been paid to the surface modification of artificial skin barriers for the treatment of skin tissue damage. Chitosan is one of the natural materials that could be characterized by its biocompatibility. A number of methods for the preparation of chitosan membranes have been described in scientific articles, including solvent casting methods. This study investigates an improved technology to produce chitosan membranes. Thus, chitosan membranes were prepared using a vibration-assisted solvent casting method. First, aqueous acetic acid was used to pretreat chitosan. Then, free-standing chitosan membranes were prepared by solvent casting on nanoporous anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane templates, allowing for the solvent to evaporate. Using finite element methods, a study was obtained showing the influence of chitosan solutions of different concentrations on the fluid flow into nanopores using high-frequency excitation. The height of the nanopillars and the surface area of the chitosan membrane were also evaluated. In this study, the surface area of the chitosan membrane was found to increase by 15, 10 and 6 times compared to the original flat surface area. The newly produced nanopillared chitosan membranes will be applicable in the fabrication of skin barriers due to the longer nanopillars on their surface and the larger surface area.
