Hydrochromic Perovskite System with Reversible Blue-Green Color for Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting

Hydro-Photo-Thermo-Responsive Multicolor Luminescence Switching of a Ternary MOF Hybrid for Advanced Information Anticounterfeiting

Developing smart materials capable of solid-state multicolor photoluminescence (PL) switching in response to multistimuli is highly desirable for advanced anticounterfeiting. Here, a ternary MOF hybrid showing hydro-photo-thermo-responsive multicolor PL switching in the solid state is presented. This hybrid is constructed by co-immobilizing Eu3+ and methyl viologen (MV) cations within an anionic MOF via the cation-exchange approach. The confined guest cations are well arranged in the framework channels, facilitating the synergistic realization of stimuli-responsive multiple PL color-switching through intermolecular coupling. The hybrid undergoes a rapid and reversible PL color-switching from red to blue upon water simulation, which is achieved by activating the blue emission of the framework linker while simultaneously quenching the Eu3+ emission. Furthermore, the hybrid displays photo-thermo-responsive PL switching from red to dark. UV-light irradiation or heating triggers the chromic conversion of MV to its colored radical form, which exhibits perfect spectral overlap with Eu3+, thus activating Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Eu3+ to MV radicals and quenching the Eu3+ emission. Inspired by these results, PL morse patterns are designed and fabricated using a novel triple-level encryption strategy, showcasing the exciting potential of this hybrid in advanced anticounterfeiting applications.

Efficient Multi-stimulus-Responsive Luminescent Eu(III)-Modified HOFs Materials: Detecting Thiram and Caffeic Acid and Constructing a Flexible Substrate Anti-counterfeiting Platform

The powerful capability of multi-stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) to respond to external chemical or physical stimuli in various manners makes them appealing in the luminescence anti-counterfeiting field. Herein, a novel Eu3+-functionalized HOF (Eu@GC-2) that combines the emission of HOFs with the characteristic emission of Eu3+ ions has been successfully synthesized, which can generate various fluorescence at different excitation wavelengths. Eu@GC-2 has enormous potential as a raw material for a paper-based sensor that is designed for detecting the pesticides thiram and caffeic acid in crops with favorable selectivity, anti-interference, and high efficiency. Based on the above excellent properties, Ln3+-functionalized HOFs (Ln@GC-2) were then employed to produce four luminescent anti-counterfeiting inks. With the incorporation of back-propagation neural network and Gray code conversion functions, a multi-stimulus-responsive luminescent anti-counterfeiting platform, coregulated by the excitation light and the chemical reagent, has been constructed. This approach can not only achieve multiple encryptions and fast information identification but also enhance the code-breaking complexity, making it an efficient strategy for information encryption and decryption.

Encapsulation of Pure Water-Stable Perovskite Nanocrystals (PNCs) into Biological Environment-Stable PNCs for Cell Imaging

Recently emerging perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) are very attractive fluorescence nanomaterials due to their very narrow emission peak, tunable wavelength, and extremely high quantum yield, but their chemosensing, biosensing and bioimaging applications suffer from the poor stability of ordinary PNCs in aqueous media, especially in biological matrices. Recently developed water-stable 2D CsPb2Br5-encapsulated 3D CsPbBr3 PNCs (i.e., CsPbBr3/CsPb2Br5 PNCs) show extremely stable light emission in pure water, but their fluorescence is seriously quenched in aqueous media containing biological molecules due to their chemical reactions. In this work, we used a facile method to encapsulate pure water-stable CsPbBr3/CsPb2Br5 PNCs in water with SiO2 and polyethylene glycol hexadecyl ether (Brij58) into a new kind of biological environment-stable PNCs (CsPbBr3/CsPb2Br5@SiO2-Brij58). The synthesis of the target PNCs can be accomplished in a fast, easy, and green way. The obtained CsPbBr3/CsPb2Br5@SiO2-Brij58 PNCs maintain strong fluorescence emission for a long time, all in pH 7.4 PBS, BSA, and minimum essential medium, exhibiting excellent biological environment stability. Moreover, the developed biological environment-stable PNCs show good biocompatibility and have been successfully used in cell imaging. Overall, the work provides an easy, low-cost, and efficient application of PNCs in bioimaging.

Hydrochromic film for dynamic information storage using cellulose nanofibers and silica nanoparticles

A hydrochromic composite film was fabricated by incorporating silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) with cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The CNF/SiNP composite film underwent a reversible change in transparency in response to external moisture variation. The CNFs improved the dimensional stability of the CNF/SiNP composite film and induced morphological differences in SiNP agglomerates, which control the water vapor condensation in a porous film. The condensed water in the pores reduced the difference in refractive index over the CNF/SiNP film, enhancing its transparency. The selective transparency of the composite film was challenged by printing CNF/SiNP inks at different composition ratios. The differing susceptibility of the printed patterns to moisture provided selective transparency at specific patterns, which can store dynamic information such as QR or numerical codes by simple water vapor adsorption and desorption.

Designing Yolk-Shell Nanostructures for Reversible Water-Vapor-Responsive Dual-Mode Switching of Fluorescence and Structural Color

Metal halide perovskites offer ample opportunities to develop advanced optoelectronic devices. This work showcases that the integration of metal halide perovskites into metal oxide nanoshells with controllable interior cavities can enable water-vapor-responsive dual-mode switching of fluorescence and structural color. Through a ship-in-a-bottle method to introduce a controlled amount of CsPbBr3 into MnO2 nanoshells, we have designed CsPbBr3@MnO2 yolk-shell nanostructures, which can uptake a defined amount of water to exhibit rapid (less than 1 s) and reversible (≥100 cycles) responses in both fluorescence on-off and color change when exposed to dynamic water vapor. These responses originate from the water-triggered phase transformation of CsPbBr3 to CsPb2Br5 and the structural color change of the MnO2 shell. The altered electronic and bonding structure at the oxide-halide interface, rapid water accumulation in the yolk-shell cavity, and protective effect of the oxide shell facilitate the reversible transformations. The response characteristics of the yolk-shell nanostructures have been further demonstrated in fabricating patterned films capable of multiple fluorescence/structural color responses, highlighting their potential for applications in advanced anticounterfeiting and encryption.

Multimode Luminescence Tailoring and Improvement of Cs2 NaHoCl6 Cryolite Crystals via Sb3+ /Yb3+ Alloying for Versatile Photoelectric Applications

Lead-free halide double perovskites are currently gaining significant attention owing to their exceptional environmental friendliness, structural adjustability as well as self-trapped exciton emission. However, stable and efficient double perovskite with multimode luminescence and tunable spectra are still urgently needed for multifunctional photoelectric application. Herein, holmium based cryolite materials (Cs2 NaHoCl6 ) with anti-thermal quenching and multimode photoluminescence were successfully synthesized. By the further alloying of Sb3+ (s-p transitions) and Yb3+ (f-f transitions) ions, its luminescence properties can be well modulated, originating from tailoring band gap structure and enriching electron transition channels. Upon Sb3+ substitution in Cs2 NaHoCl6 , additional absorption peaking at 334 nm results in the tremendous increase of photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Meanwhile, not only the typical NIR emission around 980 nm of Ho3+ is enhanced, but also the red and NIR emissions show a diverse range of anti-thermal quenching photoluminescence behaviors. Furthermore, through designing Yb3+ doping, the up-conversion photoluminescence can be triggered by changing excitation laser power density (yellow-to-orange) and Yb3+ doping concentration (red-to-green). Through a combined experimental-theoretical approach, the related luminescence mechanism is revealed. In general, by alloying Sb3+ /Yb3+ in Cs2 NaHoCl6 , abundant energy level ladders are constructed and more luminescence modes are derived, demonstrating great potential in multifunctional photoelectric applications.

Rapid Preparation of Long-Wavelength Emissive Carbon Dots for Information Encryption Using the Microwave-Assisted Method

The synthesis of long-wavelength emission fluorescent carbon dots is not common, and it is even more difficult to quickly synthesize within 10 min. In this experiment, yellow, orange, and red B, N codoped fluorescent carbon dots were successfully synthesized using a microwave-assisted method with o-phenylenediamine as the carbon-nitrogen source, boric acid as the boron source, and potassium chloride as the catalyst in just 7 min. Based on the different contents of B, N element doping, there are differences in their surface structures, resulting in differences in the luminescence properties of the synthesized carbon dots. Long-wavelength carbon dots can avoid interference from the blue fluorescence of filter papers and have a clearer display in information encryption. Therefore, three types of carbon dots were mixed with PVP to produce fluorescent inks, and anticounterfeiting and encryption patterns were designed on the filter paper, displaying different fluorescence information under sunlight and UV light. In addition, the rich fluorescent colors were combined ingeniously to enable secondary encryption of information in the form of binary codes that increase the difficulty of decoding. These indicate that the three synthesized long-wavelength carbon dots have good application prospects in information encryption.
