Ultrafine NiFe-Based (Oxy)Hydroxide Nanosheet Arrays with Rich Edge Planes and Superhydrophilic-Superaerophobic Characteristics for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Highly-dispersed 2D NiFeP/CoP heterojunction trifunctional catalyst for efficient electrolysis of water and urea

The electrocatalytic production of "green hydrogen", such as through the electrolysis of water or urea has been vigorously advocated to alleviate the energy crisis. However, their electrode reactions including oxygen evolution reaction (OER), urea oxidation reaction (UOR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) all suffer from sluggish kinetics, which urgently need catalysts to accelerate the processes. Herein, we design and prepare an OER/UOR/HER trifunctional catalyst by transforming the homemade CoO nanorod into a two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin heterojunction nickel-iron-cobalt hybrid phosphides nanosheet (NiFeP/CoP) via a hydrothermal-phosphorization method. Consequently, a strong electronic interaction was found among the Ni2P/FeP4/CoP heterogeneous interfaces, which regulates the electronic structure. Besides the high mass transfer property of 2D nanosheet, Ni2P/FeP4/CoP displays improved OER/UOR/HER performance. At 10 mA cm-2, the OER overpotential reaches 274 mV in 1.0 M KOH, and the potential of UOR is only 1.389 V in 1.0 M KOH and 0.33 M urea. More strikingly, the two-electrode systems for electrolysis water and urea-assisted electrolysis water assembled by NiFeP/CoP could maintain long-term stability for 35 h and 12 h, respectively. This work may help to pave the way for upcoming research horizons of multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Template-Assisted in situ synthesis of superaerophobic bimetallic MOF composites with tunable morphology for boosted oxygen evolution reaction

CoFe bimetallic organic frameworks (CoFe-MOFs) with tunable morphology and electronic structure are synthesized in situ utilizing cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH)2) as a semi-sacrificial template and different anionic iron salts as modifying factors in a non-calcined synthesis method. This work defines the impact of three different anionic metallic iron salts (FeCl3, Fe(NO3)3, and Fe2(SO4)3) on the morphology of MOF materials and their resulting oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity. Employing ferric chloride (FeCl3) as the metallic iron source, heterostructured electrocatalysts (BN-CoFe-MOF) with nanoparticles decorated nanoneedle tips are obtained, exhibiting a low overpotential (230 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and a Tafel slope of 105.6 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH. It also demonstrates long time stability for at least 50 h at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The investigation uncovers that the splendid OER activity and stability of the BN-CoFe-MOF heterojunction can be attributed to its large specific surface area, desirable mesoporous structure, superaerophobic characteristic, and high exposure of active centers. This work not only provides an efficient and cost-effective MOF based OER electrocatalyst but also serves as a valuable reference for future research on morphology control and strategies to enhance the OER activity of MOF catalysts.

Voltage activation induced MoO42- dissolution to enhance performance of iron doped nickel molybdate for oxygen evolution reaction

Transition metal-based precatalysts are typically voltage-activated before electrochemical testing in the condition of alkaline oxygen evolution reaction. Nevertheless, the impact of voltage on the catalyst and the anion dissolution is frequently disregarded. In this study, Fe-doped NiMoO4 (Fe-NiMoO4) was synthesized as a precursor through a straightforward hydrothermal method, and MoFe-modified Ni (oxygen) hydroxide (MoFe-NiOxHy) was obtained via cyclic voltammetry (CV) activation. The effects of voltage on Fe-NiMoO4 and the dissolved inactive MoO42- ions in the process were examined in relation to OER performance. It has demonstrated that the crystallinity of the catalyst is reduced by voltage, thereby enhancing its electrocatalytic activity. The electron distribution state can be adjusted during the application of voltage, leading to the generation of additional active sites and an acceleration in the reaction rate. Additionally, MoO42- exhibits potential dependence during its dissolution. In the OER process, the dissolution of MoO42- enhances the reconstruction degree of Fe-NiMoO4 into the active substance and expedites the formation of active Ni(Fe)OOH. Hence, the optimized MoFe-NiOxHy exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic performance, with a current density of 100 mA cm-2 achieved at an overpotential of only 256 mV. This discovery contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of alkaline OER performance under the influence of applied voltage and the presence of inactive oxygen ions, offering a promising avenue for the development of efficient electrocatalysts.

Oxygen vacancies enhanced electrocatalytic water splitting of P-FeMoO4 initiated via phosphorus doping

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) are abundant and cost-effective materials. However, poor conductivity and low intrinsic activity limit their application in electrolyzed water catalysts. Herein, we prepared P-FeMoO4 in situ on nickel foam (P-FMO@NF) by phosphorylation-modified FeMoO4 to optimize its electrocatalytic properties. Interestingly, phosphorus doping is accompanied by the generation of oxygen vacancies and surface phosphates. Oxygen vacancies accelerated Mo dissolution during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), leading to the rapid reconfiguration of P-FMO@NF to FeOOH and regulating the electronic structure of P-FMO@NF. The formation of phosphates is caused by the substitution of some molybdates with phosphates, which further increases the amount of oxygen vacancies. Hence, the OER overpotential of P-FMO@NF at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 is only 206 mV, and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential is 154 mV. It was assembled into a water splitting cell with a voltage of just 1.59 V at 10 mA cm-2 and shows excellent stability over 50 h. These excellent electrocatalytic properties are mainly attributed to the oxygen vacancies, which improve the interfacial charge transfer properties of the catalysts. This study provides new insights into phosphorus doping and offers a new perspective on the design of electrocatalysts.

Crystalline/Amorphous Mo-Ni(OH)2/FexNiy(OH)3x+2y hierarchical nanotubes as efficient electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

The development of efficient bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting is highly desirable and essential for the advancement of hydrogen technology. In this work, Mo-Ni(OH)2/FexNiy(OH)3x+2y with hierarchical nanotube structure is constructed on flexible carbon cloth (CC) through simple electrochemical deposition and hydrothermal method. The hollow tube-structure is in favor of both exposing active sites and enhancing mass transfer capability. Moreover, the doping of Mo can enhance the electronic conductivity of heterostructures. The interfacial interaction between amorphous and crystal can enhance effectively the charge transfer kinetics across the interface. Therefore, Mo-Ni(OH)2/FexNiy(OH)3x+2y can achieve a low overpotential of 57 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 229 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA·cm-2. In addition, Mo-Ni(OH)2/FexNiy(OH)3x+2y needs a potential of only 1.54 V at 10 mA·cm-2 for overall water splitting, and retains for a long period of time (60 h) reliable. The work will provide a valuable approach to the construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Cr doping and heterostructure-accelerated NiFe LDH reaction kinetics assist the MoS2 oxygen evolution reaction

Although molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has garnered significant interest as a potential catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), its poor intrinsic activity and few marginal active spots restrict its electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we successfully constructed a catalyst via a simple hydrothermal method by forming a heterostructure of MoS2 with Cr-doped nickel-iron hydroxide (NiFe LDH) to synthesize a MoS2/NiFeCr LDH catalyst to significantly improve the OER catalytic performance. MoS2 plays a crucial function as an electron transport channel in the MoS2/NiFeCr LDH heterostructure, which increases the electron transport rate. Furthermore, a larger active surface area for NiFeCr LDH is provided by the ultrathin layered structure of MoS2, increasing the number of active sites and encouraging the OER. On the other hand, the introduction of Cr element increased the density of the catalytic center and provided additional Cr-OH active sites, which accelerated the oxygen decomposition reaction. These two factors act synergistically to improve the intrinsic structure of MoS2, increase the number of reactive sites, and dramatically enhance the OER catalytic performance. Excellent OER activity is demonstrated by the MoS2/NiFeCr LDH catalyst, which only needs an overpotential of 224 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 61 mV dec-1. The catalyst also demonstrated outstanding stability, with its activity practically holding steady after 48 h of testing. This work offers novel ideas for enhancing and designing MoS2-based OER catalysts, and it provides a crucial reference for research in the field of clean energy.

RuO2 Catalysts for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution in Acidic Media: Mechanism, Activity Promotion Strategy and Research Progress

Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis (PEMWE) under acidic conditions outperforms alkaline water electrolysis in terms of less resistance loss, higher current density, and higher produced hydrogen purity, which make it more economical in long-term applications. However, the efficiency of PEMWE is severely limited by the slow kinetics of anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), poor catalyst stability, and high cost. Therefore, researchers in the past decade have made great efforts to explore cheap, efficient, and stable electrode materials. Among them, the RuO2 electrocatalyst has been proved to be a major promising alternative to Ir-based catalysts and the most promising OER catalyst owing to its excellent electrocatalytic activity and high pH adaptability. In this review, we elaborate two reaction mechanisms of OER (lattice oxygen mechanism and adsorbate evolution mechanism), comprehensively summarize and discuss the recently reported RuO2-based OER electrocatalysts under acidic conditions, and propose many advanced modification strategies to further improve the activity and stability of RuO2-based electrocatalytic OER. Finally, we provide suggestions for overcoming the challenges faced by RuO2 electrocatalysts in practical applications and make prospects for future research. This review provides perspectives and guidance for the rational design of highly active and stable acidic OER electrocatalysts based on PEMWE.

Dynamic Changes of an Anodized FeNi Alloy during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction under Alkaline Conditions

An efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst is necessary for the water-splitting process toward energy conversion. The OER through water oxidation reactions could provide electrons for H2O, CO2, and N2 reduction and produce valuable compounds. Herein, the FeNi (1:1 Ni/Fe) alloy as foam, after anodizing at 50 V in a two-electrode system in KOH solution (1.0 M), was characterized by Raman spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-angle annular dark-field imaging (HAADF)-scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and used as an efficient and durable OER electrocatalyst in KOH solution (1.0 M). The overpotential for the onset of the OER based on extrapolation of the Tafel plot was 225 mV. The overpotentials for the current densities of 10 and 30 mA/cm2 are observed at 270 and 290 mV, respectively. In addition, a low Tafel slope is observed, 38.0 mV per decade, for the OER. To investigate the mechanism of the OER, in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was used to detect FeNi hydroxide and characteristic peaks of H2O. Impurities in KOH can adsorb onto the electrode surface during the OER. Peaks corresponding to Ni(III) (hydr)oxide and FeO42- can be detected during the OER, but high-valent FeNi (hydr)oxides are unstable and reduce under the open circle potential. Metal hydroxide transformations during the OER and anion adsorption should be carefully considered. In addition, Fe3O4 may convert to γ-Fe2O3 during the OER. This study aims to offer logical perspectives on the dynamic changes that occur during the OER under alkaline conditions in an anodized FeNi alloy. These changes encompass variations in morphology, surface oxidation, the generation of high-valent species, and phase conversion during the OER.
